This is my second time here. The environment is festive and fun. I heard many of the staff singing Happy Birthday across the restaurant. I had their street tacos on corn tortillas. The server Jaime recommended the pork but I got one beef, one pork and one chicken just to try them all. Jaime was right! The pork was by far the best! I'll get three pork from now on. Frontera is maybe one step above your typical hole in the wall Mexican place. It's a pretty big restaurant space and has lots of cute decor. My friend Adam and I came here for dinner a few weekends ago. They start you off with free chips and salsa. They have a couple of drink specials too. I got the steak quesadilla suprema. Frontera is so hit or miss. Their service is always great and place is clean but the food is always a guessing game. I went here like two weeks ago and had a great cheese quesadilla. However this trip was not good. I got the combination L dinner with a flauta, enchilada and steak quesadilla. I added a side of rice and added sour cream($1.25). I only got this combo for the flauta specifically. I took one bite and bit into a wooden skewer. After that I couldn't make myself eat it. I told the waitress and she said "sorry that's how we cook it". Like okay? Didn't ask if they could remake it or comp the one item. The steak quesadilla is not at all like the cheese. I went to eat at Frontera's with my dad yesterday, and it was amazing! The food was really good. I got a dinner plate with two tacos and rice and beans on it. I had forgotten to say no lettuce for my tacos, so they really piled it on there. I don't really like lettuce, so I had to pick it all out. It's my fault, so it's no problem. I'm not sure why the star count is so low here... but it kept me away for a while. It's not 'fancy' but it is quaint and a nice neighborhood Mexican place. It was also fast and hot. The portions were generous. The chips/salsa were both fresh. We didn't order margaritas as we still had things to do that evening. But we did order the grilled chicken quesadilla dinner (with onions and peppers) which was huge and flavorful - I'll order it for myself next time... and the tampiquena which was like steak fajitas without the veggies. I wanted a frozen drink on yesterday. I stopped by Beef O'Brady's and they were super busy! I did not feel like having to wait so I decided to stop by this restaurant to see what kind of frozen drinks they had available. Upon entering the restaurant, we were sat by the hostess. The hostess was not rude, but she was not friendly either. Upon being seated, our waiter stopped by our table. He talked very fast and he tried to rush us with ordering. My husband actually told him to "just give me a minute" in response to him trying to get us to order so quickly. As soon as we did order, he snatched up the menus and almost ran away. Honestly, I didn't get the impression of him being rude. He just moved really fast and clearly, that's his expectation of others. We received our drinks and food really quickly. The presentation of the food left much to be desired. The spinach in my spinach dip was not finely chopped up. It really wasn't chopped much at all. They basically put the whole leaf in the queso. It didn't taste horrible though. It was edible. I could say more, but there's really no point. Overall, the experience was mediocre. I'm not sure I'd come back again. read more

The restaurant is decorated nicely. Lots of vibrant colors. It also gives off the feel that you're off in Mexico sitting outside in a court yard. Very cute! My 5 year old son and I went here last night. We really enjoyed our visit! We were seated immediately, and our salsa and fresh chips came out as soon as we sat. Our drink order and our order was taken at the same time since I had an idea of what we wanted already. We ordered the cheese dip which was hot and gooey. Our food was out within five minutes which freaked me out LOL but it was also simple stuff-- beef burrito and rice and beans. And I ordered him chicken fingers. The burrito came out first- and his meal second. My only complaint is I wish they would brought his food out first. No mother wants to eat while her hungry child is just gnawing on chips LOL. The interior is very welcoming and cozy feeling. I like the dimmer lights and the decor. It makes for a perfect Mexican restaurant. The bathrooms are always clean. Covid safety precautions were great-- they all had on masks. They all kept their distance, and they sat everyone with the six feet distance rule. It takes A LOT for me to leave a review. As a local to this spot, and a place my family would like to go, I will never return. I have never in my life dealt with worse service. Our waitress was extremely rude. We ordered queso, and she forgot. When we told her, she did not apologize even though we had waited over 30 minutes. She never smiled and was very blunt and rude the entire 3 times she came to our table. The only time she would come by is if we had to flag her down. When we did, of course we received an eye roll. (Earn those tips girl!) They claim to close at 9pm. At 8pm which is very early, they started flipping chairs all around us. I felt rushed and devalued as a guest being there. Later, our waitress slams the check on our table! (This is the exceptional service that we all love to tip for.) She says "if you want to split check, do it up front." *turns around and walks off*. HAHA thank you so much!! You will never see me again, and I will continue to spread the word about never coming here to all of my friends and family. The chefs are great, but service like this, kills a restaurant. I'll never forget this terrible experience. A re-evaluation of staff members needs to take place. Although I am giving this place 3 stars, I am very surprised as to why the overall rating is already at a whopping 2.3 stars. The ambience was homey and the staff fairly nice, and my whole entire family enjoyed their meals. Starting off with the aforementioned variables, this place is bursting with color. They have traditional Mexican music playing at all times and it's not too loud. There is tons of space on the inside as well. This brings me to my first issue: I have a decently sized family and we often get placed in a booth in the corner of restaurants; we are fine with that and actually prefer it. However, we got placed dead center in the middle of this restaurant at two tables our waiter slammed together before beckoning us over to follow him-- a little strange, especially since the restaurant was by no means full. He left before we arrived at our table with lots of empty seats. Our waitress who took our orders was very nice though, but a little impatient. She kept our tortilla chips coming without us asking and we appreciated that, but she was constantly on the run and seemed too busy. I ordered the Chicken and Steak Fajita Dinner and it arrived pretty quickly, along with the rest of my family's orders. The portion sizes were great and we all ended up taking to-go boxes. The rice, beans, and salad were really good, but surprisingly, the vegetable steak and chicken mix lacked bursting flavor-- not enough salt or pepper. There were also way more onions and peppers compared to the very small portion size of chicken and steak I received. The culture of this place and very nice and looks promising on the outside. I am one of the biggest fans of Mexican food as well. But, there are certain factors that need to be tweaked-- especially if they are looking to get their stars up. read more

Frontera Grill was one of the very first restaurants that opened when The Grove first opened and this was a few years ago. I have always driven by it, but this was my first time eating there. They are located near the entrance to the The Grove across from the Chick-fil-A. It has a nice entrance, but the interior was what impressed me. It was designed as though you were eating in an outdoor courtyard. Very clever and cute. We sat at a booth that had makeshift shingles above us. You'd have to visit to fully appreciate what I'm trying to describe. Aside from the clever interior design, the rest of my visit was rather meh (my new foodie expression). We were seated quickly (as in most Mexican restaurants) and our drink orders taken quickly. For our party of 5 they should've given us at least 2 cups of salsa instead of one. So I had to flag down our waiter at least twice to get more salsa... which was again, meh. We all made the following requests. Taco al carbon steak for Tammy. Burrito relleno steak for Matthew. Burrito relleno chicken for Sarah. Fajita chicken quesadilla for Rachel and the Shrimp chimichanga for myself. Our food was surprisingly slow for a typical Mexican restaurant. Maybe I have been spoiled by the speediness of Mexican restaurants or was it because it was busy Friday night? Matthew reported that he enjoyed his steak burrito relleno, but Sarah thought her chicken was a bit over cooked and tough. Rachel was bummed about her fajita chicken quesadilla. She thought they could've used more cheese and made an actual quesadilla instead of it just being a soft tortilla chicken taco. Tammy however really loved the flavor of her shredded steak. I tasted it and agreed. The marinade and seasoning it was excellent. However my shrimp chimichanga left much to be desired. I don't know if you can tell from my attached photo, but when it arrived it had a physical "hole" punched into it. It appeared (and I certainly hope that's not the case) that someone poked a finger into it. I almost immediately noticed that it was dark dark brown almost black. At first I thought it was burnt and then I wondered it was covered with mole, that popular mexican sauce. After tasting, I believe it's a little of both. I realize that a chimichanga is "fried" but this was overcooked. The skin was entirely too crispy and the contents were dried out. So I did not enjoy my chimichanga. The only reason I did not give a 2 star was because the rest of my family enjoyed most of their meals. To be rair, I took their ratings and averaged it. Our waiter was kind and attentive. He checked on us often and refilled our drinks. The last thing I want to mention is that I noticed that Frontera uses that small chewable ice popularized by Sonic. Nice touch. I'm not sure I'll be returning. They are out of our way and there are at least 4 Mexican restaurants that I would rate a little higher nearer to me. The service was very rushed and frantic from the moment was sat at our table. The server came by three times within three minutes to ask is if we were ready to order and spoke so quickly I could barely understand what he was saying. I ordered chicken tacos. What I got was three taco shells filled with a few pieces of grilled chicken. The server brought a side plate of soggy shredded iceberg lettuce and what looked like liquid beans from a baby food jar. The chicken tasted OK, just plain, and the side plate additions were not edible at all. One thing I was looking forward to was the spinach dip we had ordered as an appetizer. Love some spinach dip. We got the dip after our entrees, which wouldn't be that big of a deal but what they call spinach dip was a dish of their canned queso with a wad of whole spinach leaves and oil submerged within. See the pic attached. Would you eat that? There's more. A lot more. I could keep writing for a while but I'm going to just end here with some advice. Avoid this place if you would like an edible enjoyable meal. I'm not really sure how this place is still open. Did I mention the dirty disgusting floor and booths? I've been coming to Frontera Grill on and off for the last 2 years since moving to Birmingam and I have yet to be dissapointed. Overall their service is decent and their food is really good. Some of my favorite dishes include the carnitas, chimichanga, and fajitas ranchera (add onions and jalapeños). Their Margs are pretty good also, you can definitely feel the kick! Several friends and I chose to eat at Frontera Grill for lunch today because we wanted some place close by, that provides quick service, and has decent food for a good price. We were surprised that at 11:00 AM on a Wednesday, we were the only patrons there. However, more people did come while we were there. The food came out quickly. I had the shrimp fajitas from the lunch menu and a side of queso. My friends got different lunch entrees and we all liked what we ordered. I didn't eat any salsa today, but I've had it before and it's tasty. I'm a fan of this Frontera Grill for the quick service, decent food, and great prices. We'll be back for sure. Maybe for their $2.50 margaritas during happy hour (2-6 pm). read more

The food was delicious, but the wait time was SO long today and we got put in some dark corner of the restaurant crammed next to another booth! We typically eat at Habaneros and wait time is nonexistent there, but supposedly they had a lot of large groups at Frontera today. We thought our waiter had forgotten about us when we were ready to order and then a common courtesy of giving us an approximate time of when our food would be ready (after the long wait) would have been nice. My wife and I have dined at Frontera Grill-The Grove ever since it opened several years ago. We eat there monthly or every six weeks. Service has usually been quick even when the restaurant is crowded with customers. We have always enjoyed the Mexican cuisine and have appreciated the courtesy and work ethic of their staff. There seems to be, however, a change in all that I mentioned above especially over the past six months or so. Today we were seated at an unstable table (not the only one in the restaurant). In the past we had to place our feet on the table legs to keep it from rockin' and rollin'. So today we relocated ourselves the the first stable table that we could find. The upholstery is worn on several of the seats along the windows and against the walls; many of the chairs need to be stabilized. No doubt Frontera Grill at The Grove is a popular place to eat, and we wish to continue our patronage. But it is time for the owner of that establishment to spend money on upgrading the seating areas and the robustness of the food's temperature. Food should be hot, not warm. We live near Frontera Grill and have eaten there since it has opened. Over the years we stop going there for various reasons & then give it another try only to be disappointed (poor service, low quality of food, a/c not working, you name it). The latest disappointments are poor service & food poisoning. My daughter ate there yesterday with a group of her friends and the service was horrible. Then to top it off, she got sick & vomited all night. I called the restaurant and asked to speak to a manager. I was passed around to several employees & finally spoke to someone who said she was the manager, & she did not care. She showed no compassion for my daughter, did not ask if she was ok or how she was feeling. She did not ask any questions about the meal (what items my daughter ate, what time she ate, did her friends get sick, etc.). All she said was take her to the doctor, she is sick, but did not get food poisoning here. We will not be going back here again. They provide horrible service, don't take care of their customers, don't maintain there establishment & now have poisoned my daughter. If I could give them a lower rating, I would. read more

I agree that the food is quite tasty and the ambiance is bright and beautiful but sadly the poor attitudes and rudeness of a couple of waiters I encountered will keep me from visiting this restaurant again. Just last evening as I was entering the restaurant the three hosts at the front stared me down as if to ask why was I coming there. One of them was nice enough to ask how many was being seated. Still no greeting or smile from the other two. As I was seated at a booth by a waiter, he took the menu and brushed the bits of food that was on the table onto the seat and walked way. I asked him to please clean the booth and he proceeded to slap down the menu at a table nearby. When I told him that I preferred the booth, he slang the wet towel around with so much aggravation and frustration that I never even took a seat and left. This is not the first time I've experienced these attitudes at this place but it will certainly be the last. The fact that the hosts who stared me down as I walked in watched the entire fiasco and never once tried to stop me from leaving or make things right says a mouthful. This is a go-to restaurant for our family. It's located conveniently in the Target strip mall. The food is good, not exceptional. My favorites are the fajitas or the pork carnitas. The service is consistently fast and the prices are reasonable with most dishes being below $10. They also have a lunch menu that's available 7 days a week. The one, slightly strange, complaint I have is that they don't provide knives unless you ask. If your dish requires a knife it's frustrating to wait to see the waiter again to ask for one. read more
