They are perfect for casual coffee drinkers, or for people who like sweeter options. Although they do serve food, it doesn't necessarily stand out. They have sandwiches, salads, and other options that you would expect at a typical cafe. I had their charcuterie board as a shared appetizer and the salmon sandwich as an entree. Wow. Just wow. I'd been to the Frothy Monkey in Nashville, but it took me a while to make my way to Birmingham's outpost. It was so good! Super spacious with abundant light, the cafe was gorgeous. You can either have a sit down experience with table service or order at the counter if you're looking for coffee and food to go. I ordered the Farm Breakfast and house coffee. The coffee was delicious- not burnt or over roasted like a lot of places. The Farm Breakfast came with two eggs, bacon or sausage, choice of toast, and grits. OMG it was delicious! I got the eggs scrambled, Benton's bacon (which was honestly more like slices of ham than bacon), whole grain toast with the most delicious strawberry preserves, and super luscious and creamy grits. Originally a Nashville spot, Frothy Monkey has two Birmingham locations, and we checked out the downtown location for brunch. This occupies the old Urban Standard location, which is a beautiful open airy space with lots of seating options. Their menu has fun specialty coffees, matcha, teas, and cocktails to start. They have all day breakfast and lunch options. I had the heuvos Rolandos which was a bright savory breakfast bowl with fresh vegetables. My friends had the Cali toast and said it was tasty as well, but nothing too unique. Service was fast, and our server did mix up our checks but happily fixed it for us. We dropped into the Nashville location a little over a year ago. We were so busy trying to make it to our flight that I don't remember much about the experience. We ate breakfast at the downtown Birmingham location this morning & I instantly fell in love. I think one of the staff member's jobs was only to compliment the women as they waited for a table to come open. It buttered me up before I even sat down for a bite. The buzz of the restaurant patrons made the 20 minute wait fly by. I noticed that along with standard tables, they had a number of large family tables to accommodate groups. I kept it simple with the Garden omelet, side of Gouda grits and the Golden Monkey latte. Everything was perfect! I even grabbed a bottle of the Hoff's Wake Up Call hot sauce to go. It's made with Frothy Monkey cold brew coffee. The espresso used for the latte was out of stock but I'm planning to order it online. read more

So this was a restaurant I had been really looking forward to trying but unfortunately it didn't live up to the expectations. Upon arrival we were told it would be a short wait and I have no issue with waiting for a table. However standing in the front of a restaurant for 30 minutes looking at empty tables just to have the host point to the nearest empty table that you had been staring at for 30 minutes and tell you to sit there is not the best way to start a dining experience. We were so close to the empty table that she didn't even walk us to the table. She just pointed at and dropped the menus off. Once at our table, our server takes our drink order and then drops them off but we don't see her again until the meal is over. We are told shorty after that our server is on a break and that another sever will take our order. The server that takes our order is nice and pleasant and the first one that took the drink order and then takes her break is fine but after our order is taken staff is never seen again until it's time to pay. I wanted to order another soda but was never offered the opportunity to order one. One of my friends was undecided at what to order to drink when original orders were taken but again a server never came back to check on us so that she could order something to drink either before we finished our food. The restaurant it self is cute. The food could have been presented better but it all tasted good. Overall the service was very mediocre and disappointing for it not to be busy. No one was at the hostess station to seat me, even though there's a sign that indicates a hostess will seat you for a table. After standing there awhile and feeling awkward, I decided to walk up to the coffee counter to order. I thought perhaps there's no table service for a 2:00 pm visit. I told the person at the counter that I planned to eat here and asked if it was ok to order from her. She indicated yes, but she was impatient with me as I read over the extensive menu for food and coffee. I ordered the Golden Monkey Latte and French Toast, which I probably would not have ordered had I not been so flustered and feeling rushed. No one was in line behind me. I probably would have ordered a savory dish. 2 slices of French Toast and a latte was $22. And I left a tip. My order took some time to come out. It was in a Togo coffee cup and a Togo container. It was slightly difficult to cut the French toast in a container with high sides. The French toast, with a side of sliced peaches that reminded me of canned peaches in the school cafeteria lunches, was plain and nothing special. Certainly not worth $14. Coffee was interesting but didn't wow me. My water wasn't refilled, I wasn't checked on. I was pretty much ignored by the wait staff, the manager, etc. I observed that, besides me, three other single patrons ordered from the counter, then sat at the tables, and were not checked on. Maybe they thought we were working from home and didn't want to be disturbed. Perhaps it was an off day because apparently the kitchen was slow for everyone today. This is a cool little coffee restaurant downtown with a great menu of sandwiches, brunch and lunch dishes and even dinner. The vibe is young and fun and cool - my 21- and 23 year old love it so much. We needed a cool brunch and we found it. We arrived at 11:00 on 12/23 and waited about ten minutes and were seated - drink and food order took about another ten minutes, so all was good. The food is amazing!! The grits are creamy and the bacon is smoky salty. The over medium eggs were pretty over easy, so order accordingly. Andouille hash was different - greens, purple Yukons, and andouille are in a nice roomy bowl (see my photo).
