We were a little nervous coming here as the reviews were just so-so. We ended up buying the $50 groupon deal for two which included two miso soups, two appetizers, and four maki rolls. We went this route mainly because of all of the reviews that states this place was expensive with small portions. We honestly felt pretty good after just the soup and appetizers. We got the sampler, which came with some gyoza, egg rolls, Japanese chicken lettuce wraps, and edamame, as well as the baked scallops and roe. Everything was delicious, and the scallops were a must have. For rolls we got the caterpillar roll, and then some simple yellowfin, tuna, and eel, since we're were already feeling quite full. The specialty rolls (caterpillar) are quite big, while the simple (yellowtail, tuna) are smaller, but this is reflected in their price too. Good sushi isn't cheap people. And this was good sushi. Ambiance was nice, place was packed, and our server was very polite and attentive. We honestly weren't expecting much based on some of the reviews, but were pleasantly surprised. I came here with coworkers for lunch, and we really enjoyed our experience! The place is modern and well-lit. I got the Seared Special from the lunch menu. It comes with 2 pieces of seared salmon nigiri, 2 pieces of seared tuna nigiri, and 6 pieces of spicy tuna maki. All were delicious! The spicy tuna maki wasn't sufficiently spicy, but it was really crunchy and fresh. The seared nigiri were very flavorful, full of unami, and seared to perfection. Fuji is a Boston-area staple and it's hard to ignore their growth as a restaurant chain in recent years. The Kendall location is a new one for me, but I've been a occasional consumer at the Quincy Center locale. Comparing the two I know, the Kendall location feels a bit divided. Most of the small couples tables are anchored by booth bench seating, stretched across a narrow side of the eatery. The hostess table is directly in the center of the restaurant, maximizing visibility and cutting the bar area out from the more intimate couples seating. You can only make do with so much room, and I get it when you're in tech-heaven Kendall Sq. Food itself at Fuji is always what I expect and almost a bit by-the-book. 4 solid stars for the warm and hearty tempura udon. My friend and I both uncermoniously ordered the soba and udon version on a cold night; it turned out to be just what we both needed, with its generous imitation crab toppings, thick cut noodles on my udon, and savory enough soup. A plus that the tempura pieces, by default, come out on a side plate and you get to choose how to best eat them - one if by dunking in broth, two if by swallowing whole. I was a bit disappointed by the wonton salmon chips. It's a favorite of many of my friends and I'm not sure if we either got a bad one or just didn't quite find it up to our liking. The wonton pieces are a fun take on chips and salsa, but the "salsa" or salmon is not quite so delightful. The salmon ends up being oversaturated and turned watery by all the tomatoes. I actually would have preferred the salmon to be even a little more strongly seasoned, with something other than tomatoes as the body of the dip. I love sushi and I have been to many sushi restaurants, including upscale ones. This Fuji at Kendal is nicely located, a mid-class sushi restaurant. They have many of my favorite sushi and sushi roles. Servers are nice. Unfortunately, their table smells bad!!! Especially those tables, that are located nearby the window and get more sun lights, release very bad smells. I think either they used a dirty towel to wipe the table before we came OR It is just that their tables got already observed so much water, dirt or something. Service was subpar took our waitress a good 20 minutes to delivery my boyfriend's beer and over an hour to get our food. Once we got our food it was nothing to write home about. Fried rice was dry and boring. Sushi was fresh but definitely over priced (17 dollars for a 6 piece special roll.. Insanity) I was happy they had free valet parking (which was the weirdest valet parking ever. You didn't get a ticket for your car and they gave you your keys back after it was parked) but I won't be coming back here again. Went here for dinner tonight. It was beautiful so I sat outside, but the ambiance of the inside of the restaurant was really nice as upscale but casual. The hostess was very friendly and welcoming. There was an older gentleman who greeted us that was very pleasant as well, this was a great start to dinner. Unfortunately our waitress didn't live up to the bar they set. She was nothing to write home about. Not the most helpful but wasn't mean just not as pleasant or attentive as the hostess and older gentleman. One example is she brought the dinner then brought my salad and then brought silverware and a napkin, needless to say my dinner got cold as I ate my salad. Oh yeah when I went to pay my $27 bill I gave her $40 and she had the audacity to ask if I wanted change! I don't mean to rip her, but I don't go to restaurants just for the food I go for the overall experience and she put a little bit of a damper on tonight. The meal was delicious! It's mostly a sushi restaurant but I was in dire need of an udon fix and that is what I ordered. I had it with seafood which was so fresh and delicious! The lunch menu is short and filled with both carnivore and herbivore options. Most of the prices range between $11 and $20. I chose the Gourmet Lunch-4 pieces of nigiri, 3 pieces of spicy tuna and 3 pieces of California roll. The lunch also included a side miso soup and salad. Salad was over dressed, but the fish was good. Dinner allowed for more options, but prices definitely reached higher ($12 to $28). As an appetizer, I ordered the takosu. Even though pieces were few and they were a bit chewy, nevertheless the vinaigrette was on point. For entree, I order the tempura udon. Broth was mild with mushroom flavor and noodles were plenty. The tempura was mostly vegetables and two shrimps, and not heavily battered so that was a plus. Meal came out to be just under $40 with too and tax. Great ambiance and they also have outdoor seating. One friend and I got eel, one friend got teriyaki chicken, and one friend got the salmon. The deluxe bento box comes with miso soup, salad, tempura, 3 pieces of sushi, and 3 pieces of sashimi. First, the miso soup came out for all of us. It was tasty and well seasoned. Then, we sat waiting on our bento boxes. Unfortunately, we all got our bento boxes at different times, with the last person getting their box about 20 minutes after the first. It would have been nice if it all came out at once, so we wouldn't have to wait and let the food get cold. The food itself was decent; the eel and fish used was fresh and good quality. The salmon sashimi and sushi were very good, and the tempura was as expected. For the rice dish, the eel on rice was tasty but the ratio of rice to meat was a bit off as there was too much rice for the amount of eel. If I were to come again, I would probably choose salmon as the meat, as I tried some of my friend's and it was better quality in my opinion. The entire meal was surprisingly filling, and I really appreciate the quantity as someone who eats a lot. Overall, the food was fresh and well made. The price point was relatively high though ($25 after tax and tip for lunch), so I would say the quality just met my expectations. I work in close proximity to Fuji at Kendall so I visit quite frequently. I've never had a bad meal nor experience there. Front desk and the wait staff treat guests like family. It's a very welcoming and warm environment only to be matched by the quality in their cuisine. Management is always on top of things and checking in to make sure parties are satisfied. Working in the area for years I've sampled quite a chunk of the menu. Huge fan of the lunch bento's, Volcano Maki and Beef Tataki. All of the sushi's and meals down to the apps are reliably phenomenal and the portions are generous. I've been going to Fuji for many years. I used to go to the one in Quincy Center at least once a week. I recently moved to East Cambridge and was happy to have my go to sushi bar close by. I've eaten at the restaurant for lunch and ordered delivery through Eat24. It's food is fresh and really very good. The decor is actually a lot more appealing to me than the Quincy location. The sushi is made at the bar, which is cool. My only gripe is the cost. I understand the rent is more in Kendall Square, but they charge about $10 more for the spicy tako salad. I won't order it on principle alone! It was my favorite. Anyway, delivery has always been on time, and in perfect order. Even the delivery guy is pleasant. I took one star off for the ridiculous mark-up of my favorite salad. read more

The takosu was a measly 3 paper-thin slices and the noodles for tenzaru was potioned out to 2-3 dips in the sauce. DANGER for people with GLUTEN SENSITIVITY, WHEAT ALLERGY or CELIAC DISEASE: I ordered a gluten-free item off the menu, they brought me wheat noodles. I told the host and server that I cannot eat gluten. The server showed me that starred menu items can be made gluten-free. I chose a starred item, and stated that I wanted it made gluten-free. I asked annoying questions about gluten in sauces and spices. Server assured me everything would be gluten-free. The manager came to my table to boast that his staff had special training in making gluten-free food. He showed me that "GLUTEN-FREE" was printed on my order ticket, in big red letters. The food took forever, 45 mins after 2pm on a Friday. Finally, the manager brought out my chicken. It was sitting on egg noodles, which are made of wheat. I protested. The manager looked at me like I was stupid, and said that since the meal contained noodles, it could not be made gluten-free. That is nonsense! They could have served any kind of gluten-free noodles: rice noodles, soba, shirataki, harusame, or just plain white rice. To be clear, the menu said: ["Chicken Teriyaki (*) - Grilled boneless white breast meat served with noodles and teriyaki sauce"]. The menu did NOT say "egg noodles". It DID say that the dish could be made gluten-free -- and I discussed this plan with both the server AND the manager! So how was this my fault? The manager did not even apologize! He wanted to remake the food and charge me for it. He cannot admit a mistake. That is not an attitude you want from anyone handling your food. Stay away. read more

I went here with my boyfriend. It is in a great Kendall square location, close to lots of biotech firms, and has a upscale ambiance. The restaurant was about 3/4 full at dinnertime and we had no trouble getting a seat right away. We tried "boat 1," a sushi boat that is a good size for two people. The staff was very attentive and even provided us extra spicy mayo to dip the sushi in. The platter came with 4 sashimi, 4 nigiri, and 16 maki. The sushi platter was beautiful, visually but tastewise it was nothing special. We thought it was a bit overpriced. The drinks were also a little expensive at $12 each. We tried the Kendall Squared which was pretty refreshing and the Two Way Street which was a little too sweet for my taste. The best part of the visit is the service and the upscale nature of the restaurant. However, if you don't care, or want a more casual atmosphere, I would recommend going to better sushi options downtown and in Cambridge. read more

Ahh Fuji. I was there at the beginning, at their little place in Quincy and their bento boxes treated me right in college. But they've really expanded and put on the ritz in this location, so I gave it a try for a sushi date. Service: 5 stars. Our waitress was really nice. Atmosphere: 5 stars. Really hip, not overly cramped. Food: I'm kind of a sushi newbie, so I can't provide a very comprehensive comparative review, but I will say none of them made me want to gag. We got sushi boat 1, which provided a nice selection of sushi rolls, sashimi and nigiri. The nigiri terrified me but I tried it and it wasn't too fishy at all. Totally not even that horrifying. The spicy tuna was my fave though. Also for safe options I went with a big appetizer of veggie tempura (although it goes by some other mysterious name on their menu) and it was delicious. Sweet potato, broccoli, eggplant, green beans and asparagus were all fried to perfection and delicious. It came with a big wide mouthed bowl of delicious sauce to dip them in (the wide mouth is very important for bulky vegetables that won't fit in those tiny little cups of sauce they usually give you). Prices: They're up there. The sushi boat was around $40, but plenty to share between the two of us. With that, a smoothie, and the tempura, our bill came to around $75, and we didn't have extra drinks or anything. But my understanding of sushi is that you generally need to spend more to get the good stuff. Note: Their bathrooms have mirrors with TV's in them, which I didn't even know were a thing. I just finished a review earlier tonight for Ittoku on Comm Ave which does a lot of things right for Japanese cuisine. I'm sad to say, Fuji is like a comedy of errors and a complete showcase of how it's done wrong. First off, our waitress came to take our order after what felt like ages. I ordered what I thought to be tea but turned out to be some awful amalgamation of just water, sugar and food coloring. Worse yet, it was lukewarm. The mind conjures of up the pea soup scene from The Exorcist. My fiancee and I each ordered sushi rolls along with noodle entrees. The sushi only went down after a Herculean struggle with my gag reflex. The sushi was warm and the slab of salmon I managed to ingest carried a strong aftertaste. I expected udon noodles but was somehow treated to Lo Mein instead. The beef strips were way overcooked and just barely coated in what tasted like oyster sauce. Look, I'm not a big enough of a purist or snob to have issues with falsely-advertised authenticity - I've eaten at plenty of high-quality, Chinese-owned sushi restaurants. But I do take issue with a restaurant pawning off Lo Mein as Udon noodles. Sloppy service, bad food and a hyper-inflated price tag. There's a laundry list of problems with this place, you'd be wise to give more-deserving establishments your business. read more
