Best sushi I've ever had period! I've had a lot of sushi and I never would of thought that the best would be in the suburb of Needham! I've come here for both lunch and dinner. During lunch they have a great lunch special where you can get 2 rolls, soup and salad for 8 or 9 bucks (depending on which rolls you order). My favorite rolls and the Idaho roll and the Needham Maki. Service is always quick and friendly and the place is busy, but not so busy where there is a long wait for a table. If you come with a large party sometimes they will seat you in a private room which always makes you feel special. Great food, great drinks, great service, what more can you ask for? read more

Arrived at the restaurant at 9:45 and they graciously and quickly seated us, they rushed us on for the order, but that's totally understandable since we arrived so late. What I didn't like was their method of nickel and diming. We wanted fried rice instead of white, they wanted $2 extra. Then we didn't each shrimp even though it comes with the hibachi, and we asked for a substitute or to not charge for fried rice, but they denied the request. Most other hibachi places to substitute. I was here for hibachi last week. Among the 8 of us, we probably sampled most of their habachi entries. The presentation was excellent but no so for the food. While the sushi was fine, everything else was so bad I couldn't eat there again. We ordered oodon noodle soup, asked for vegetarian, got soup with chicken, scallops, shrimp, fish, tofu, and an entire egg...literally they dropped an entire egg into the soup so the yolk was still mushy and the white was enormous. I have only been to Fuji for sushi and sake. And both were fantastic! Fuji has quickly become my favorite Asian restaurant in Needham. I love the ambiance, the service, and the food. The sashimi is fresh and the sushi chefs are not afraid to be creative. The restaurant is very clean, and the decor put diners in the right mood. I highly recommend this restaurant for parties of all sizes. The hibachi option is probably great for mid-size parties with children (who will sit for a show), but it's also a nice little date spot for a casual night out. Fuji is not the cheapest option out there, but I always feel like I got my money's worth. read more

3.5 stars actually. Five of us girlfriends had a night out during the week, so we had no issues with waiting for our seats. The bar area is nice but very small and although my drink (sake) was fine, the women who had mixed drinks said it could have been a bit stronger (the 'mix' was overtaking the drink) so they switched to wine. The food at the cooking table was very good, I think three shrimps for an apptz seems a bit skimpy but still tasty. The chef was very friendly and talented. The waiter was right on top of the drinks, refilling waters, etc. They also have two cute rooms for parties that do not want to sit at the cooking table so nice to have some privacy. I did not order the sushi so I cannot comment on it at all; looking forward to trying it next time though. Only complaints: couldnt find the designated parking area so we all ended up parked down the street (not a big deal) and the acoustics are limited so the screaming children at the other tables reverb'd throughout the place (not solely an issue with the restaurant, some parents think they are in a plastic bubble). We had no problem with a wait and our service was average, so no complaints. However, we sat at the hibachi and it was underwhelming. The food was very bland and the hibachi experience was overall lacking...no entertainment or interaction with our chef at all. It wasn't very busy but he just seemed bored. Also, fried rice portions were very small considering they charge extra for fried rice over white rice. The scorpion bowls were good and the prices were comparable to most hibachi places I've been, but the overall experience was also better at those places. We had a groupon which took some of the sting out of it but I won't be heading back here anytime soon. read more

After doing some research I picked this place for a 10 person Hibachi outing. I found that the decor was really nice and the place was large and extensive. However, due to the younger nature of our group (20-23), we felt mistreated as clients and that our business was not appreciated. The chef was the nicest person there. However, it felt like a chore that we had brought our business there and they did not treat us with respect. Where the hell do I start? Last week my boyfriend took me to this place that he was curious to try with Groupon. Now we have done a few other hibachi places and this one was no match. When we arrived, there was NO one in there except for the staff. (Maybe because it was 30 minutes until closing) Anyways, our server took us to our seats and from the moment we were seated I swear we were being watched. I told my BF but he just laughed it off. The young lady came over and took our orders. I ordered chicken and my BF had the steak and we shared a scorpion bowl. Now, we love our liquor so I would say out of the whole dinner that was the ONLY good part. We finally get the chef to come cook our food and his ass was trying to making corny a** jokes while doing tricks. ( just focus on those damn knifes please!!!) My BF doesn't like shrimp or seafood, whatsoever which was included with our meal. The guy was so busy trying to entertain us that he almost gave my BF a damn heart attack when the shrimp touched his steak!!! lmao...( I shouldn't laugh at that right? Sorry babe =) ) Finally, we get our food and the first bite was ...SALTY AS HELL!!! ( talk about high blood pressure) We should've ordered some water instead of the scorpion bowl. OMG! I don't know what was in that sauce they put on our food but it destroyed the food 100%. The ONLY thing that was good....well hell nothing was good. We couldn't finish our food. The server the came and asked us how was it, my BF screamed " IT WAS HORRIBLE" ! He didn't have to yell at her, sh*t its not her fought. This place sits right in quaint downtown Needham and looks pretty large on the outisde but is pretty small on the inside. The staff is very friendly and I did notice the Yelp stickers in the windows on the way in. The place is set up like any Japanese Steak House and even the staff dresses the same. The bar area is not much to it, very compacted little area. The menu is pretty large with lots of great selections and the sushi here is decent. The show they put on is similar to the one in Dedham, same humor, same skits etc. These chefs all must be trained at the same place. Very fast service and always friendly. The place gets very crowded on weekends and because its Needham it is jam packed with families and kids. Food is excellent and there is plenty of it and you get a lot for the prices. The only thing I didnt like here was the annoying kids running around each table and even some of the annoying parents. OY! read more

The ONLY reason I couldn't give it 5 stars is every single time I go the hostess is so rude. She is horrible. Bad attitude, she looks at you like you just rang her doorbell trying to sell encylopedias. The most recent incident, I arrived at 10:20pm on a Saturday night. She didn't even make eye contact. What an awful experience! We were told it would be a ten minute wait ... it was a half hour. We then sat for an additional 15 minutes waiting for someone to come to our hibachi table. We finally flagged someone down. It was a night of waiting for drinks that sat at the bar, water, food,check. The food was ok but extremely oily! Steak was over cooked... shrimp appetizer was the last item served. The restaurant as a whole is in disarray. Shovels and ice melt in the entry way. Random boxes in the waiting area. Boxes of liquor in plain view on the restaurant side of the bar. The floor is dirty, the carpet disgusting. We will never go back! read more

Every time I go here the waiters talk abt me and make it so obvious .They point, stare and always glare but the food is ok

When we arrived they asked us whether or not we wanted to sit in the hibachi area. I said yes thinking we were going to order hibachi. We ended up deciding we didn't want it and they said we couldn't stay there and we had to move. They didn't help us carry any of our drinks we had already gotten. It was dead in there, there was no reason to move. Sushi was just ok. My date got teriyaki steak which was overly sweet and not very good. They never checked on us to refill our water. Just had a horrific dinner at fuji in needham. It doesn't even deserve one star. First the place is so run down. The walls are dirty and have holes in them. The glasses for our drinks were literally filthy. We were so rushed through the whole process of ordering, being served and getting out. The food was terrible. Soggy veggies. Hibachi was fine but everything felt dirty. Had to send back my meal because it was swimming in soy sauce. We had to ask for chop sticks and were just given two pairs despite being 5 people. Place felt cheap and dirty. At the end we told the waitress it was my sons bday so she quickly grabbed a n ice cream for him and very unhappily sang happy bday and ran off. Will never go back. Plus it was way overpriced! I have no idea how there were any positive reviews. The health dept. should take a look at this place read more

Fuji--WHO KNEW that you could find outstanding sushi, and that whole funny/great/bizarro japanese steak house, onion-pyramid-on-fire-chefs-grilling-thing that the whole famliy can enjoy in the burbs! The entertainment aspect is great but truly, the sushi (esp house specialties) are the jewels here. We live in Needham and have dined at Fuji over ten times in the last two years. We believe that Fuji started out as a great concept, but has worsened dramatically since its original opening. We wouldn't rely on any dated comments made by others about the service, food quality, or atmosphere at Fuji. First, the service has degraded severely, and is now what we consider to be unbearable. Don't expect to given a realistic time to wait for a hibachi cooking table to open. We suspect that Fuji is now understaffed with chefs, and thus you will mostly wait interminably in order to be seated at a cooking table. Reservations don't seem to make a difference in mitigating this wait time. Even if you choose to sit at a non-cooking table that might be available, our experience has been that your food will arrive at different times and can take as long as forty-five minutes from your initial order--it also seems that there are a limited number of cooks in the back kitchen. This has been a recurring theme each time we have visited Fuji over the past six months. Our complaints to the wait staff and the manager have fallen on deaf ears, and no apologies or efforts have ever been made to ameliorate the situation. Be forewarned that everyone in your party must have a lot of patience, including any children. Second, its seems that the wait staff and the performing chefs are not as interested in creating an enjoyable dining experience. Although the "cracking the egg behind the back" and the "clanging of knives" can be eye-catching, nothing puts more of damper on the meal than having the wait staff accuse you of lying about the age of your children in Chinese to the manager (children receive a slight discount). Evidently, some of the Chinese wait staff is still under the assumption in this day and age that all Americans cannot understand Chinese. Don't they realize that Needham and Newton High Schools have exceptional Chinese language instruction? We suspect that the wait staff and chefs are motivated to have you eat as quickly as possible to turn over the cook table for the next party. Don't be surprised when the cooking table is being scraped and cleaned before you are halfway through eating--and be assured the bill will presented before you finish your meal. Somehow between the long wait to be seated and and the speed with which you are rushed through your meal, we question whether this makes for a relaxing evening out with the family or friends. Even McDonalds understands the concept of how to serve quickly without forcing its customers to quickly vacate its tables. Fuji's food quality used to be pretty good relative to its price, but we can no longer stand behind this statement. A plate of fried chicken, beef, and fried rice will run you $23+tax+service. That's a lot to pay even if you are lucky enough to see an egg cracked behind the chef's back. Lastly, for those sushi fans, the sushi is not as fresh as it used to be. Perhaps Needham doesn't consume enough sushi volume during the week for the restaurant to be able to cost justify paying for premium grade sushi. If great fresh sushi is what you seek, try Oishii in Newton. Finally, Fuji's dining atmosphere is a little stiffling. The waiting area is small, the flat panel TV with sports being broadcast over the sushi bar diminishes the atmosphere, the fountain/koi pond never seems to work, and the bar is not inviting for drinks. We have to unequivocally state that the overall decor now seems somewhat dated and worn. As we gave Fuji one last try this evening, we weren't surprised to overhear a distraught father of two young girls complaining out loud to the manager. Evidently, despite repeated inquiries, his youngest daughter had not received her meal 40 minutes after placing her order at a noncooking table. The manager showed no empathy to the situation and made no apologies, but insisted that it wasn't his fault that there weren't enough chefs! Given this acrimonious atmosphere, this was one time that we were glad to be rushed through our meal. read more

Very very cool. The onion tower is awe inspiring. Servers are good at their tricks and friendly, however I would appreciate them mixing up their tricks because I've been here multiple times and it's always the same. Food is good, but the experience is what makes it a worthwhile journey. Fish in front are fun. Best of all, they bring fried ice cream for birthdays! The food is pretty great and that goes for sushi and hibachi. Being that it's about a mile from our house and by far the closest Japanese restaurant, I enjoy the convenience factor. However, points have to be deducted for ridiculous waits - this is in spite of making reservations. When staff are confronted with this, they have just said that "it's busy" - not acceptable. The food and atmosphere here was actually quite good. My experience was ruined when the waitress clearing our table spilled a small dish of soy sauce on my pants. Tried this place for lunch around 1:15 pm on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Was shocked to see that we were the only party in the teppanyaki area. Service was quick and attentive. The food was seasoned well and cooked to perfection. Our chef was not the most personable or entertaining, but it suited us just fine as we have been to teppanyaki/hibachi places many times before and were not there to be entertained -- we were there just for the food this time. The prices were very reasonable. Lunch was $30 for the two of us which is very inexpensive for a teppanyaki place. We were pleased and will return. read more

I leave with bad taste in my mouth every time, and not because of the food. The staff is so unpleasant, they could serve the best sushi on earth and still leave each customer with a bad experience. It is situated just down the street from our house, so we have actually been there several times and without fail, we leave in a bad mood. After having 5 members of the staff standing near us and clearly mocking their customers in Japanese I've decided never again! Our first time there, we came to celebrate our 4 year old's birthday, when we asked for his birthday cake they told us they were too busy that day. I highly recommend Yama in Wellesley instead -- better food, a nice homely ambiance, beautiful origami decorations and the owners are always around clearly making an effort to make their customers feel welcome. read more

While I have had good meals in past tonight was so awful felt a warning was needed. Had reservations ,was seated a full hour after. Then a half hour passed before anyone came over to take a drink order. In that time not one of the main tables (there are 4)had a chef. When I finally received my meal, never received the drink I ordered, the food had a chemical taste. Absolutely inedible. Small portions for the price. You need to share table with other people, so Hibachi chef getting mixed up with orders and you end up sharing food with another family.
