Tucked between Blockbuster and a dry cleaner, behind a gas station, I had no idea what to expect. I ordered to go, and was amazed at the variety of ways you can eat there. Half the restaurant is teppanyaki (hibachi) with white boys cooking, which is really weird. They also have a small "Yo! Sushi" set up with a couple of chairs around the revolving track, and then a few more booths to sit and order and get waiter service. It was crowded, so I think people like it, but it is expensive. I ordered the salt and pepper deep fried calamari which was ok but way too much garlic; I have garlic coming out of every pore, which doesn't bode well for any hot, or even lukewarm, marital action tonight. The hamachi was delicious, the tobiko was fine but not well made; all the eggs fell off on the ride home. The spider roll was sparse on spider crab and had a weird mayo taste. And oddly, as soon as I finished eating, my stomach started to hurt, which may be the overdose of garlic or may be completely unrelated. I totally had a "40 Year Old Virgin" flashback when a tepanyakki guy said, "Hey, this is Jim! Everybody, it's JIM, and it's JIM'S birthday, let's all sing JIM the birthday song!" The entire restaurant began singing happy birthday (in English) and I stood with mouth agape and eyes bugging. The Asian sushi chef called me over and told me he was out of spider roll, offered shrimp tempura instead, and I said no thanks and went to get it removed from the bill, which I had already paid. He then magically found one, so I took it home and then somewhat enjoyed it. The rest of the menu is lacking. Sure, they have all sorts of sushi and "inventive" maki, but the rest of the menu sucks. You can order chicken katsu as an appetizer but not a meal; I didn't see an option for pork katsu, donburi, croquettes, saba, or anything else that I would usually eat at a Japanese restaurant. Their Udon is noodles, broth, and 3 pieces of shrimp tempura. That's not Udon, by any stretch of the imagination. Throwing noodles in a bowl of hot liquid doesn't make something a Japanese staple menu item. The wait staff, particularly the super-skinny-red-headed-condescending young lady, are undertrained and overwhelmed. They may think that they can afford to be supercilious because they are the only Japanese restaurant on this side of Sunnyside, but honestly, get over it. Your restaurant is NOT that good! Coming from California and eating AMAZING sushi, well prepared, and reasonably priced, in a real sushi restaurant and not some weird hybrid milquetoast beni-hana-yo! place, may have left me irreparably spoiled. I seriously doubt I will eat there again. It's worth the drive to Portland to go to a real sushi restaurant, or even to 82nd to find mediocre sushi. 7/1/07 I'm downgrading to one star. We were attempting to rent "Shooter" (damn you Blockbuster for not having the movies we want) next door and I had my husband peek in the window of the closed restaurant to see the set-up. On the Yo!Sushi knock-off track, with the stools up on the eating area, there was leftover sushi just sitting there! I kid you not...I could see California rolls, hamachi, and other sushi bits on covered plates left to get nice and steamy overnight and all day today. I hope they throw them away when they open, but that's just nasty. Even McDonald's rinses out the shake machine at the end of the day. It is so yucky to leave uneaten food sitting out to fester. Whatever. That guy is being a douchebag. I served him and his way cool wife at Fuji's for a year and a half. They were the ONLY people to order nigori sake- yet we carried it still. He didn't complain about getting the best possible value for his money, and he knows that most of the servers try damn hard to provide bend-over-backwards service. The sushi chefs might not have time to entertain guests, but they try to get your food out as fast as they can. Working there, and eating there, I really don't know what he's talking about. I've only been to a couple of places in the area that had better fish, but you know what? Better fish is more expensive, and places like that tend to be less creative with their offerings. "It's like Benihana's" I was told as I wandered here for a birthday. Yes, the good setup is similar (look an Onion volcano) but that is where the similarities end. The restaurant is half sushi train bar and bar and they have 4 or 5 grills. The place was packed for a Wednesday night in October, which I saw as a good sign. The staff were all friendly and they seated 13 of us (keep in mind we made reservations.) The food options are great, they have a ton of Sushi and it's actually fairly cheap. Some of the people went with just sushi, I opted for just a few different pieces. It was good sushi and a good idea to get some since it took a while for the chef to get to us. The chef was a funny guy and did the normal tricks one does when cooking on a flat iron grill for a crowd. He had our orders pretty dialed in and didn't mess anything up! Which is impressive since there were 13 of us and he was the ONLY chef on duty. The best part about this place, other than the food tasting amazing, is the quantity. When I go to Benihanas and they give me tiny portions and I drop 60+ on myself (drinks, of course) I expect to be full. This is just a "Fat Americans need huge portions" it is I'm actually hungry. At Fuji's they LOAD you up with food. Albeit mainly rice or noodles/veggies but I love all of that stuff! Every single person who ordered a meal had leftovers. I was really please with Fuji's. It is not that "upscale" feeling you get at Benihana's which, by the way, Benihana's is not a "fancy" restaurant. It's a chain when parents take kids to watch chefs to food trick... I really don't hate Mr. Benihana, why am I killing them right now? I digress, Fuji's has TV's so we could catch the Blazer game, good drinks, great food and good service. The one beef when we went, they were under staffed so we were there for close to two hours. I expected to be there eong, I just felt bad for our waitress, she was all over the place! It's conveyor-belt-sushi, so I expected it to be a mediocre sushi experience that would nevertheless satisfy my sushi craving. Mediocre it was, satisfy my craving it did not because, even though the food tasted decent, the prices were even higher than some of the greatest sushi I've had in this city! It left me feeling like I was just scammed by a crook! Few things are worse than overpaying for something, especially in a city like Portland where there is so much strong competition between restaurants that overpaying ought to never happen. The prices ought to reflect the quality of the food. Not so for Fuji's. Not even close! I live nearby and was craving sushi one night but did not want to travel far from home so I gave Fuji's a shot. If Fuji's had similar prices to Sushi Hana (which I think has the best conveyor-belt-sushi in Portland because it is actually PRICED like conveyor-belt-sushi, i.e. basically every plate you grab off the belt is $1.75) then I would have given it a much better review, because hey- you get what you pay for right? That's how it is supposed to work in this country! Conveyor-belt-sushi is one of those things that you have to take with a grain of salt. You go into it knowing it isn't going to be the best sushi of your life and you judge it accordingly and fairly. It's supposed to be cheap sushi that isn't going to break the bank but will satisfy your sushi craving. Fuji's does NOT do this. Fuji's will break your bank and serve you mediocre sushi at the same time. After paying my $30 bill I felt very disappointed with myself for not just biting the bullet and driving to a place I knew would have given me outstanding sushi for that $30, or at least going to a conveyor-belt joint that would have given me the mediocre sushi, but for half the price. If you think Fuji's is the best sushi in town you really need to get out more. There is a whole world of outstanding sushi in the Portland Metropolitan area and your bill will be about the same as it is at Fuji's! read more

Good conveyor belt sushi options, but the prices are a little high. There a lot of roll options, and you can order nigri and other rolls off paper menu. Other half of the restaurant is teppanyaki. You can order sushi and teppanyaki no matter where you sit. We got in around 5:30 pm, half an hour after they opened and there was already a crowd. The sushi guys were moving quickly and orders were coming out fast. I only had the cooked rolls and really liked the shrimp tempura with the sauce. I'd come back again because the location is convenient. The price is a bit high for their plates. Starts at $1.50 and goes to $5.00, but most of the good rolls are $4-$5 for 3 pieces. read more

I tried this place almost a month ago. It's mediocre - at best. The sushi doesn't seem all that fresh...AND shouldn't fish be kept cold???. It is conveyor belt sushi so it is what it is. Rather expensive, too. It seems for $3 a plate, you'd get a top-notch piece of fish AND/OR more then 2 pieces. My kids had the tempura udon. It was just so-so. The service wasn't very good either. The waiter got 1/2 our order wrong. The atmosphere wasn't all that good. I have YET TO FIND a decent sushi place in ALL OF PORTLAND that doesn't cost an arm and leg AND offers a great roll or otherwise...IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK of PDX??? 1) We had never been here before and no one told us how to order or explained the menu situation. 2) There was only one sushi cook at the sushi bar and he was overworked. It took him about 15 minutes before he took our order. Another table set down behind us and he had to yell for a server to get them drinks. 3) Servers never collected our plates throughout the meal despite us stacking them for them at the end of the table and them coming by to check on us. 4) The sushi bar guy was far more helpful with customers than any of the waitstaff. I love this place. I've been going here for years. From a single girl with friends to now a wife with kids. I'm hooked on the Fuji sauce and the Sunnyside roll. My favorite! I'm happy that we can buy the sauce in bottles to take home. The best is the rotating Sushi bar. My kids found that fun. The place can be a lil expensive but most sushi places are. My favorite place to go! Since I was about 10-11 my family has been going every year for my birthday. The sushi options are great and theres a little bit of everything depending on what you like. The food is TO DIE FOR. We always get the sunny side special - $50. You get noodles/rice, steak, chicken, shrimp, veggies(onions, mushrooms,zucchini) and white rice and a salad before the meal. Its for 2 people and yet you always leave with enough leftovers for about a week. They cook everything right in front of you which in its own is an awesome experience. The cooks are funny and really get you involved throughout the meal. The only let down would be the slow wait for each cook to begin, since theres 4 tables and only 2 cooks. All in all, this is a place you have to go at least once in your life. read more

I love my sushi, and was quite curious about this place, so gave it a try. Was surprised to see that not only do they have the sushi belt here, but also the open grills that people can sit around while you watch the chef prepare the food right in front of you. Hmm...seems promising, ya? Anyway, so we sat down at a booth to try some of their sushi. The selection was minimal but looked pretty good. The fish was decent, a little better quality than Sushi Land, but be mindful that the plates here are also a little bit more expensive. The wait staff was very friendly and prompt with their service. All in all, it was an okay experience. I gave it two stars because I felt like I could have spent my money better elsewhere for sushi. For what they were charging, I think they should have offered more selection on the belt. read more

Amazing. Did the hibachi grill. Nathan the cook was engaging, funny, and an excellent cook. He really put on a show and it was great. Everything tasted amazing. We have been to plenty of Beni Hanna and, well, probably won't ever go back there now that we have had Fujis. Oh and the portions are huge. We are all taking home more than what a regular portion would be anywhere else. My little kids absolutely loved the show and food. read more

They remodeled! Nice, modern-ish looking Japanese place that is great if you're in the area and looking for good sushi. If you're into raw fish then even better because Fuji has some pretty fresh, fatty slices. Honestly, the price is decent in comparison to other authentic sushi joints. This is not a restaurant that are just putting some rice and "fish" together and called it "sushi". Also, if your favorite "sushi" is California rolls then don't bother coming here. This is suppose to be authentic! I am actually glad there is a place like this in Clackamas for me to go to when I am visiting my parents. Shall be back to try their grill instead of going to Benihana! Great for groups because they have tables, also great for singles because they have a conveyor belt. read more

The sushi chefs should not be allowed to wield sushi knives!!! They demonstrate little knowledge of the art let alone the items on the menu. Case in point: I requested tempura nigiri was was presented with a warm tempura maki. The tempura was cold and the rice was warm. This was the first sushi place I've ever been to, and before this place I'd only ever had fred meyer sushi and hated it. My friends and I came here after a long river day, and I was super mad because I thought I didn't like sushi--I'm not a big fish person. The sushi comes in these little colored plates, and the prices are based off of the color of the plate, ranging from $2.50-$7.00. I always get their kinshi (tuna roll) because it's one of the only types of fish I can stand. But I have tried other types and I do like them. The executive chef is super nice and talks to you. He asked us if we needed anything to let him know, and he would modify things if we didn't like specific foods. I've been here over five times in the past two months ever since the first time. I have never publically reviewed a restaurant, until now. I decided to go to Fujis Clackamas Sushi Restaurant because of the many great google reviews. With all candor, if the following accounting of the real experiences of actual customers was just documenting an off-night for the staff, I get it, but seriously do what you love in life, if you're not it shows. This is my review: Imagine a tiny nearly visable One Star, and that's this review. I actually wish there were a minus zero star option, but the one star minimum is best used here for the nice server agreeing with us about the unbeliveable and shocking state of the food served to us, and because she choose not to charge us - as we were electing to leave even before all the food was finished being served. First my miso soup arrives, in a cold wet (served in a just-washed and still dripping) cheap black plastic bowl. The miso soup was off tasting, with a touch of chemical wood smoke flavor, and then I discovered there was Imitation Crab Meat instead of tofu, which was not even disclosed on the menu, or I would have walked out right then. Next came my sushi order, nothing complex, just a few pieces of tuna and some salmon nigiri. The fish had slimy appearance, the mouth feel was also very slimy and tasted quite unfresh... this was very gross, and I stopped eating immediately. While I was trying to make sense of the sushi I was served, my friends order was done and just sitting on the chef's counter - unserved for a few minutes, and only several feet away, while I suffered through this ordeal. Now the part of my review where I want to address the restaurant owner directly: Dear Fujis owner, when in the world of reason and/or good taste is it okay to serve your customers "canned tuna fish" (these were your chef's words) on top of sushi rice?? WTF unappetising extraordinaire! Then the sushi chef actually came over to our booth, stood in front of me and he lifted up a dirty serving bowl with an avocado pit, various unidentifiable food chucks and residues, and one nasty peice of tuna sashimi below all that compost, and asked if I would like to have the piece of fish in the bottom of that bowl, "it's fresh", said he... I looked him as if he was insane, politely asking him to not bring that to my table. Then the veg/shrimp tempura arrived, they looked like pototo latkes that were stepped on, served cold, wet and still swimming in nasty thick grease, clearly cooked in low temp oil; in no way was this dish a tempura. My friends tempura "crispy fried shrimp" was soggy, cold and looked as if it was cooked hours if not days prior. Meanwhile the sushi chef and his fellow sushi chef were making some light conversation in Spanish near us... Unknown to the two hispanic chefs, my friend, also hispanic, heard all of it. They were bad mouthing me for asking about the fake meat in my miso soup and asking if they used canned tuna fish on sushi. Please take yourself to a sushi place that treats fish, food and customers with respect. See and taste the difference. Happy eating (elsewhere)! read more

I'm not sure what to say about this place. The decor of this place is really nice, it's hip and very inviting. The sushi menu is very large and almost has everything that a sushi lover wants. The grill menu...well that's a different story. The hibachi I think is OK, the GF and I ordered some special that has chicken, shrimp and Filet Mignon over rice and noodles. The problem I have with it is the fact that they serve Filet Mignon chopped up in cubes. I mean this is a beautiful steak that should be enjoyed as a whole, not cut up into cubes, it's a disgrace to meat eaters. Yes I understand that it's a hibachi thing, but wouldn't it be best to use a NY cut and slice it into strips? It would lower the price a tiny bit but at least it's better looking than cubed meat, expensive cube meat. The salad that came with this dish has a ginger dressing or something like that. It really looked like...how do I say this? Odd? Like milky, textured paper pulp. It tasted alright, but didn't really like how it looked. The dish was alright, not great, a little salty. But that massacre they did with the filet Mignon is torture. Presentation needed to be worked on, looked like it was thrown on there because the kitchen was closing. Lots of rice and noodles came with the protein that you get. The sushi, the GF liked as did the GF friend. The tuna poke salad was nice, though the chunks were thin sliced. A place I would go back again, but only if other options are exhausted. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with this place! I really never saw myself as a big fan of sushi AT ALL until my friend told me to take a chance and just try this out! I did and though the sushi was on that little conveyor belt, I thought it was super cool how if you chose to eat that instead of something straight off the menu, you just ate right then and there! Also, I love how the portions are a bit smaller (I don't eat a whole lot) and its perfect bc you can eat a lot of different types of sushi! You can pick exactly how much you want to spend too. The plates have different prices that correspond with their color so that was pretty helpful to me when thinking about how much I wanted to spend. Overall it was a fun experience for me and I will definitely be going back and now trying new sushi places! read more

This review is for their conveyor belt sushi. So the bad... the conveyor belt sushi was terrible and over priced. When you are in the Portland area ( I know this is in Happy Valley but....) and everyone else is doing generic sushi for about $2 bucks a plate and you are going to charge $3-$5, your plated sushi better be damn amazing. It wasn't. I felt everything we pulled from the belt was extremely blah... The good... The Fuji spicy mayo sauce is amazing. They do something crazy with it but that orange spicy sauce is definitely amazing. It's definitely not your ordinary spicy mayo. Has some sort of kick that gives it a 5th dimension. Ordering from the menu, sushi items were actually good. My wife said that the Albacore was really good, and if we ever came back, that was all she would order. First-off, let me lay out a disclaimer that I'm going to be picky!!! Averaging more than $30 a plate in a strip mall setting deserves that. The staff was very friendly!!! The sushi was very good. We all enjoyed our rolls. The soups were simply terrible. The salads were very unique... i wouldn't say bad, but it would take a rare individual to like it. I liked it, no one else at the table did. The oniony flavor is still in my mouth from 3 days ago..... which is weird. (I'm one of those weirdos who brush, floss, and mouthwash after every snack so its not a hygiene thing) The fried veggies were great! Too much butter and salt, but they were done perfectly. We all had either the fried rice or the yakisoba. The chef's "show" was okay... again, it felt out of place. Watching the cubes of butter being thrown into the already fried food bothered me. Once it came to me, I enjoyed the first few bites. Then the salt and grease started to get to me. I smiled and enjoyed the company we were with and then threw out my food once we left. Its hard to toss out two plates of spendy fried rice, but I couldn't take it anymore. I would never go back. The recipes NEED to be rethought before I'd consider it. read more

The manager here is awful and beyond rude. He yelled at me in front of the owner. He's the worst example of someone who's supposed to be in customer service. I ordered a salmon roll, he tried to up charge me when I picked up my order when the food I ordered was already gluten free and no need for the substitution. We came here for the first time 3/4 years ago and had to come back when we were visiting family. My bf loves sushi and it didn't disappoint. Everything tasted the same as it did previously. I was sad to learn that they changed their chicken karage recipe recently because I loved it so much the first time. I do not personally eat sushi and love good karaga, so I was very disappointed when it came out and looked like popcorn chicken. I loved the fact that it was crispy and juicy before but now it was on the dry side and the sauce they had for dipping was too spicy for me (I can't handle spicy personally). We will return next time we visit but I'll have to change what I will get. read more

It's okay for a sushi belt restaurant and expensive for a sushi belt restaurant. They focused on presentation over quality. Orders mixed up, slow service, customers charged for items not ordered (seen this happen more than once!) ---- REVIEW YOUR RECEIPT. Bathrooms and floors unclean. Place should be shut down! If you're looking for REAL sushi, go to Sinju sushi or anywhere else. For authentic hibachi dinners go to Benihana! Feel sorry for owners who put up with unprofessional. Saw manager upset and yelled AT customer because customer expressed he wasn't getting any service. LISTEN and BELIEVE REVIEWS --- TERRIBLE SERVICE!
