I haven't been here in a while but I love this place. This okazuya is the bomb. Yes, the prices have definitely gone up. My four item plate was almost $8 with a side order of spicy ahi for $6. The shiso musubi is my all time favorite. The first time I had it, I was in love. The flavor and aroma of it is just awesome. Their vegetable tempura is huge. I hate when I get vegetable tempera and it's soggy. The ones from this place are crispy, even though it's heavy on the batter. I bit into it and there's a slight crunch. Yay! The eggplant chicken is also good. They make it with some kind of teri sauce and the eggplant just soaks it up. The spicy ahi is a good deal. It was tasty with the right amount of spice to it. The fish was fresh and they gave a decent amount for the price. The only thing that I wasn't too fond of is the fried chicken. The skin was crispy but the meat was dry. It was definitely over fried, but at least it wasn't pink in the middle. That would have been worse. read more

It was the perfect last lunch before I headed to HNL and (un)fortunately I wanted to get as much bits of home as I could in my tummy before I left da aina... resulting in me getting way too much food. Fukuya was the perfect way to say goodbye. My lunch cost me $12 (but then again, I ordered too much though). MUST HAVES: Mochiko chicken!!! (so crisp on the outside and so tender) FURIKAKE/SHISO MUSUBI Inari Gobo- it's a little spicy! Nishime (gotta love the crispy turnip) Veggie Tempura Crab cake The Teri Ahi was okay, I probably wouldn't get it again. I also probably shouldn't have gotten a hot dog, but shoyu hot dogs just call my name. My mom also likes the cucumber namasu, but since I hate cucumbers I can't say that I've even tried it. If you come around 12 you're gonna run into the lunch crowd... we were lucky we just missed it at 1130. The line was building up behind us though, phew! Get there early because all the good options run out fast! ****Best Shoyu Pork I've had since IGES. If your looking to go back to sleep or had a long night this is the place of comfort to get to your ZzZzZs on. (Well I eat with my eyes) so of course the bed is the next best place after Okazuya. Five stars. Ahh, I got my quick fix of okazu foods for a quick breakfast. Yum! The fried chicken, crab cake, cone sushi, and orange passion drink. All winnahs! The fried chicken has a great flavor. Even when cold, it's still all good! The crab cake is flavorful and delicious. Unsure if they use real crab, but tasty nonetheless. The cone sushi is one of the best old fashioned tasting ones. Hard to come by now days. Of course, the orange passion drink is always sweet and refreshing. As always. They do have a large variety of okazuya foods. A rarity in Honolulu now days. The parking lot is quite small, but somehow always able to find somewhere to park, be it street or in their lot. Don't think can park next door, got one security guard. It's not for everyone, but if you want a nostalgic flavor and not expecting anything fancy, but good old fashioned food, this is the place for you. Highly recommend! read more

One of the best things about having Honolulu as home base is coming here to eat. Parking is a pain, and the line can get long, but boy is it worth it. Make sure you come early if you want to maximize your options of food to pick. Once things run out they dont always restock. The idea here is ala carte choose-your-own japanese plate lunch. Some of the food is japanese with an island flavor. They charge per item and everything is sooooo good. Okazuya is my favorite and there are less and less of these in Hawaii nowadays. I've been away from Hawaii for a few years now. A lot of my old favorites have either disappeared or declined in quality, but I'm happy to report that that's not the case about Fukuya. The same great taste I remember as a child still exists today. I love Fukuya! They have a bunch of different food items to choose from to make your own bento! My favorites include the shiso musubi, tofu burger, crab cake, namasu and teri meatballs. But let's be real, everything is delicious! Ever since Ebisu closed, I have been on the hunt for a really tasty restaurant to satisfy my okazuya cravings. I jumped on yelp, searching for okazuyas in Honolulu, and after trying multiple okazuyas on island, Fukuya has been the best. Some highlights: - PARKING: they have a few stalls in front and street parking. Considering that a typical transaction will be no longer than 15-20 minutes, stalls can open up quickly. - BEEF TERIYAKI: the best beef teriyaki I've had in awhile. Super tender (not your typical tough, could be jerky, beef teriyaki) and flavorful; it's not too sweet or salty. - SHISO MUSUBI: don't let the super purple coloration fool you, it's not too salty or pungent yet still captures the unique flavor of shiso. Definitely not the typical shiso you buy at the store. - VEGETABLE TEMPURA: not too much of that doughy batter. It still has some crunch without it being too oily. One of the best mixed vegetable tempura I've had. I've also had their mochiko chicken (tasty and chewy), garlic chicken (bite-sized pieces that are flavorful and not oily), furikake musubi, corned beef hash, chow funn (chewy, not overly moist/wet and none of the noodles are dry/crunchy), and their mochi. All of their food I've tried is pretty good, but the ones listed above ate my favorites and the reason why I come back. Just keep in mind some things: - they can be a bit pricey, but I'm willing to pay for good okazuya food. - their selection changes so you may not find the item you're looking for. Yikes! $17.00 for quick lunch and they already sold out of shirae. I use to equate Okazuya to quick affordable lunches and catered funeral food. When did it get so expensive? In my hanabuddah days, I lived off this stuff along with the Manapua trucks & Saimin shops. Thanks to other yelpers, next time I will order a bento to save $. When asked: - Why are Okazuyas open so early and closes when the food runs out? (Fukuya hours 6am-2pm.) - Why are Okazuyas closed on Tuesday's? (Fukuya closed is on Monday's & Tuesday's. Saint Louis deli is open on Tuesday.) - Why isn't there a place to sit and eat? (Fukuya has one table & chairs, patrons uses it to organize their take out. I have never seen anyone dine in.) - Why do we have to preorder our Mochi for girls day and Maki Sushi for New Year's Eve from Fukuya? My response, "Because that's just the way it's always been." After my last visit, I read several articles on Okazuyas. I learned, Okazu means food with rice, Ya means shop. Okazuya is unique to our islands. It's local Japanese comfort food. It originated as Japanese housewives selling lunches boxes to bachelor's on their way to work at the plantations. The best ones are Okinawan with influence from other plantation workers, hence the canned meats (corn beef hash) and chow fun. However Fukuya is more "Japanese" than "Okinawan" - What Evers (Rolling my eyes.) Fukuya, founded in 1939, is the last surviving Okazuya/Japanese Delicatessen in the McCully-Moiliili neighborhood. A very good okazuya but I would recommend that you get one of their meals because when you order al la carte, everything looks good and you'll end up getting/spending too much. Did I need to try their ahi made 4 different ways and spend $15? No. Do I regret it? No. The parking lot is a little tough to navigate because this place is pretty popular. read more

I've been going to Fukuya ever since I was little and it continues to be my favorite Okazuya place! Although there is limited parking and the line can be long at times, the staff are quick to make your order and you are in and out of there in no time. Some of my favorites are the nori chicken, kombu maki, vegetable tempura, and the tofu burger. Prices are fairly reasonable at $10-$15 per plate but it really just depends on what you order. Since the pandemic hit Hawaii my wife and I frequent okazuyas because it is delicious and we can easily find someplace cool to eat our lunch. Plus you don't have to worry about how clean your table is when you dine in. We haven't been to Fukuya in years probably because they were on the more expensive than most other okazuyas. We went there on a Friday about 12:30 and there was a short line going in. What we were surprised at was that at this time of the day there was still a large selection of what looks like freshly made food. My wife ordered on of the set bentos that included cone sushi, plain rice musubi, fried chicken, hot dog, chow fun noodles, and corned beef hash that didn't;t have much corned beef in it. I was sharing this with my wife and I also ordered the nori chicken, ahi burger and a side of mac salad. The food was delicious, especially the nori chicken that was slightly warm, juicy, and still crispy, really delicious. The ahi burger was also very good and I will order these 2 items again the next time I stop by. My wife enjoyed her bento also saying that everything was pretty tasty. We will return. read more

We usuallhy stop by this okazuya deli when we have crave for good japanese okazuya. I love their Ahi Burger, Teri Ahi and Nori Chicken. The food is really tasty with a good variety to choose from. Everything is fresh, as they run out of one item, another tray is made and brought. They also had a good tofu burger that a I tried last month. They are open during the lockdown for takeout and allow 3 customers in at a time. I love coming here to grab a quick lunch to go and to take on the plane whenever I need to fly. Classic okazuya food with great flavor. I especially love their ahi patty, shoyu ahi, eggplant and gobo. They have a huge mix of musubis, maki sushi, noodles, vegetables and various things to choose from. If you come late though, they do run out of foods so it's best to come before 10 am. read more

Never been to this place before, but I must say that the service was quick, the people were nice, and it was yummy. We decided to make a pit stop before the beach to check this place out and damn, it was a good choice. We got nori chicken (which was probably the best thing ever made in life....lol) shrimp tempura, rice balls, hash, and some other good stuff. The nori chicken reminded me of a mochiko chicken with furikake. It was sooooo good. The shrimp tempura was crispy, the potato hash thing was yummy too. It was perfect to grab on the go and hele to the beach. I can't believe that this was my first time at this place. I'm gonna become a weekend regular from now on. These Japanese deli's are something I miss from my childhood, granted my mom used to take me and I didn't know what was going on. I found Fukuya from yelp and it's close by UH where I go to school so I vowed to come here one day after school if I ever ended early. ope, didn't happen! I happen to be around the area on a Sunday and even though I already ate I had to stop by. I was already full and I picked out a whole bunch of things...I guess that's a good sign or my eyes are really more hungry than my tummy haha! I got the potato hash, croquette, nori fried chicken, mochiko chicken, andagi, spam musubi, shiso onigiri and spicy ahi. The potato hash was too sweet for my liking. I loved the croquette! I love croquettes in general haha. The nori fried chicken and mochiko chicken tasted similar, I liked the nori fried chicken a bit more! The andagi was for my boyfriend...that was the only thing he chose lol! It was good :) The spam musubi, shiso onigiri and spicy ahi were the stars for me. The spam musubi didn't seem like it was fried? The spam was just marinated in the sweet soy sauce. I liked it! I LOVED the shiso onigiri but that's because of nostalgia too. They use a higher quality shiso than I have at home and it makes a world of a difference. Their spicy ahi was pretty standard but I munched on that like crazy. My top picks are the shiso onigiri, the spicy ahi just because I like spicy ahi in general, croquette and the nori fried chicken. Be careful! It's super easy to rack up $$$ at this place haha. The pricing for most things were $2~$3 dollars. There's no price signage on the food items so I got to know my total after :p no guesstimations. The pricing I do remember is the spicy ahi cup was $6, shiso onigiri was 1.40, croquette was 1.40??, nori fried chicken was $3 and spam musubi was 2.25? Just trying to help out haha. This is my favorite okazuya in town. It's the taste of my childhood, a styrofoam container brimming with musubis, fish, fried chicken, nishime, the obligatory hot dog, and of course their specialty the Fukuya egg. If you don't know about the egg that's ok. It may seem like an innocuous rolled omelette but as I've heard from another customer, "I don't know what it is, I tried making it at home and it doesn't taste the same." Just a few suggestions though, please make your choices as you move down the line don't make the workers hustle from one end to the other and also don't try and take a phone order while you're ordering. It's just rude. The line to their okazuya bounty is long enough, or else I will quickly bounce over you with my order while you dither between mochiko and nori chicken. Don't know what an okazuya is? It is a magical mini buffet of Japanese deliciousness where you are charged for each individual item. If you have self-control, this is a very affordable eating option. If you are like me though, my bill always ends up more than $10 because I want it ALL! My go to choices are the nori chicken, ahi burger, potato hash, and shiso musubi. The nori chicken is basically a giant juicy piece of karaage chicken wrapped in nori. The ahi burger is always moist and comes topped with a yummy sauce. The potato hash is made of fluffy potato with bits of corned beef hash. And lastly, the shiso musubi provides a much needed carb and slight tang to round out the meal. You really can't go wrong with anything you pick though! It is primarily a take-out restaurant, but there is one plastic table if you really can't wait to dig in! Ordered from the catering menu for 12 people for Father's Day gathering. Minimum supposed to be 15 so there was a .70/person up charge, which was okay with me, since it's less than the cost of one more person. Menu C has : assorted sushi, tossed greens, shoyu pork, fried chicken or mochiko, assorted tempura, fried noodles, potato mac salad for $24.70/person (in my case $25.40/person. Had to make an appointment to pick up at 4 pm, which was perfect for me. Arrived at 4 and went towards front door on the left side of the building. A homeless-looking man setting up a blanket toward the right of the door politely told me the pickup door was to the right of him and there was a bell to ring. The Fukuya staff had everything ready and brought the food on a cart to my van. They seemed genuinely happy for the business. In the meantime, several other vehicles had pulled into the small parking lot and the homeless man had gone out to the sidewalk, leaving his blanket on the ground. As I left, I wanted to give him some food, but not fro my order so I gave him a couple dollars instead, for which he was grateful.
