I have been buying Sebastian's FRESH fish for nearly 19 years. This, is the BEST fish I have ever purchased. The Sea Scallops are the sweetest, the Halibut is simply fabulous, the Haddock is delicious and the variety of sea salads and offerings is wonderful. It may be more expensive than the grocery store (This isn't frozen then thawed for retail - it's fresh) but the quality is far superior and if you know and love fish, you understand freshness is the key. Sebastian is a supremely knowledgeable fishmonger and an absolute delight - always greeting you with a smile. I barely write reviews and have never written a negative review like this one so far, but this needed to be done! First of all, we've been a customer for a long time and buy seafood from Sebastian very often. Recently, I bought 5 large lobsters and 4 lbs of steamers from G&R fish market for my partner's birthday. Out of 60-70 steamers, only 5 of them opened after 45 minutes. They should all have opened within 8-10 minutes (as anyone would know), so we knew something was wrong. I called Sebastian the next day, starting my conversation, thanking him for the delicious lobsters and then explained what happened. I was simply expecting proper CUSTOMER SERVICE and RESPECT. He responded, blaming me, saying that we didn't know how to cook them! He told me, "Come to the store and I will cook in front of you and teach you. You did something wrong. There is nothing wrong with my steamers. It's your fault." I was speechless and so frustrated! How dare he could talk to a customer like this?!? We buy and cook steamers all the time and my partner's mother was with us who has over 50+ years of experience cooking them! He wouldn't even listen to me and he kept blaming me and repeating the same sentence over and over again that it was my fault and that his steamers were great! This is UNBELIEVABLE! 3 years ago, the steamers we bought from Shaws did not open and the next day, they apologized and refunded us immediately. In 3 years, we've at least bought steamers for over 20 times. We do know how to cook + I didn't need to be treated the way he treated me. He is VERY DISRESPECTFUL! There is something severely wrong here! In between this conversation or whatever it was, I asked if we could get store credit (not even asking for a refund) and then he said, "there is nothing wrong with my steamers, it's your fault, but customer is always right and I can reimburse you." Of course, I did not step into his store again and will never do! If I were after getting a refund, I would have said that there was something wrong with his lobsters, not steamers. This has nothing to do with a customer always being right, this is all about his personality and how he treats customers. No business owner with the right mind would behave the way he did. Having ZERO understanding of customer service and respect, I am shocked he is still in business. As I mentioned above, we've been a customer for a long time. So, he lost a good customer and I am sure he will lose more. Sturbridge needs a proper seafood market with a DECENT owner! read more

Love the fresh Sushi Grade Ahi, Scallops and Soft Shell Crab. A bit pricy but the friendly and personal service along with quality seafood makes up for it. I can request specific seafood like sea urchin roe and they will try and get it for me...we'll my Mom is requesting for it on her visit to MA. Would love to see more selection. He always has staple fish items; salmon, tuna, cod, swordfish, etc. If you want something special just ask and he will pick it up the next time he's in Boston, usually within a day or so. Small fish market, best quality in the area by FAR. Only place in the Sturbridge area where you can get wild caught shellfish with any consistency and the prices are the same or even lower than the low end markets in the area. Selection is somewhat limited but he'll get you almost anything if you request it. Probably the friendlest proprietor in Sturbridge, treats everyone like royalty. From the very first time I stepped foot in the market the owners treated me as though they have known me for years. They are very friendly and helpful. If you need suggestions on what kind of fish to get or even recipes they are more than happy to help you. I have never had a bad experience here & I highly doubt that I ever will. I have been buying my fish a G&R for several years now, and have never had anything but the freshest fish. His shop is very clean, everything kept on ice, and most importantly everything is fresh. He doesn't appear to over buy, and his turnover is very good. He will run out of some types, but I find that to be a good thing. Keeps everything fresh.
