Best thing we had was the shaken beef - the meat was v juicy and tender + the green sauce they paired it with was so tangy and bright it completely elevated the dish. I do wish the portion size was bigger for a $30 entree on the chef's menu though. Prawn and mango salad was also delicious and refreshing although not suuuper unique in its flavor. Unfortunately, the chicken hot pot wasn't what i expected - was hoping for more of a spicier broth with flavorful chicken. Overall, it was decent and the broth did taste good, just wasn't as bold as i'd like it to be. Since I did not have a reservation, I had to wait almost an hour for a table. Once ordered, I had to wait 30 minutes for a can of beer. Waited another 30 minutes for my clams. Then another 45 minutes for my shaken beef. With that said, the food isn't bad. read more

The restaurant is located in south Philly so mostly street parking (but even on a Saturday evening, there are still some available near by). We ordered couple appetizers and three main dishes: 1) Water Fern Dumplings: Very unique and tasty. Love the dipping sauce. 2) Fried calamari : seasoned perfectly and crispy. 3) Shaken Beef: Fresh and grilled well. 4) Lemongrass Tofu: Kind of sweet and sour, not much lemongrass flavor, but our daughter loves it. 5) Seafood Fried Rice: Good but nothing special. Came in late on a Thursday night and were the last diners of the night, but you'd never know it from the food or service. Everything came out fast and hit the spot. The calamari was perfectly cooked, the seafood fried rice was full of flavor, and the soy garlic wings were addictive. Even at the end of the night, the kitchen showed up. A lovely cozy Vietnamese restaurant that offers authentic yet creative take on Vietnamese cuisine. We came here on a Friday night, maybe 8 or sth but got seated right away. I was skeptical as there were many non Viet dining around, but the food was beyond expectations. We order Bánh Bèo and Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm. We got pretty full with these two dishes. I thought I would save for Flan but they ran out. The service was good though felt like we got a bit ignored compared to a nearby table (maybe they thought Viets dont wanna be bothered lol). Instead, you will enter into a brand new culinary adventure full of delicious dishes. I love Banh Beo, unfortunately it is a difficult dish to find in this area, and this place really delivers on this dish. It's absolutely delicious and my favorite dish here. The beef carpaccio & shaken beef are also pretty great. The cocktails are fantastic. The only dish I probably won't order again is the platter. I struggle with giving it a 4...my review is a 3.5. Gabriella's Vietnam offers authentic Vietnamese food. The individuals working here were very kind and explained the dishes nicely. I really appreciate when restaurants answer questions about their cuisine patiently rather than feeling annoyed so thank you, I learned a lot. The restaurant could definitely be more elevated without the random and tacky decorations all over the restaurant. Secondly, the QR code in the restaurant for the menu has more items listed than what is on the restaurant's website. We also noticed there were space heaters all throughout the floor, I am not sure if this is a normal. We felt very cold the entire dinner. We were closer to the window but had to keep our jackets on which didn't feel like enough. Otherwise the space has a beautiful bar area and plentiful seating surrounding it. WATER FERN DUMPLINGS - (ordered without the pork crackling) this was such a beautiful presentation and there is an explosion of so many textures and flavors in your mouth at once 5/5 WINTER FLOUNDER - what a fun dish to share with! the flounder was flaky inside and crispy on the outside, I loved the herb mix that came with it, moreover, the fish sauce vinaigrette WAS SO GOOD, we asked for two more bowls of it, it's definitely needed as the flounder could use a bit more salt 5/5 SIZZLING CATFISH - the catfish was so flavorful as it was cooked with a turmeric dry rub. Our water was never empty. The food was fairly decent. The prawn & mango salad was a little different than what I've anticipated but still delicious. Lots of different textures and flavors but, somehow, managed to compliment each other. The lightly battered fried calamari was splendid. The sauce it came with made this simple dish feel whole and complete. The water fern dumplings, on the other hand, were my least favorite. I was beyond skeptical about Vietnamese food in Philly, as I just got back from Vietnam last month. Ohhhhh you haven't been to Vietnam? Oh ok, I'll handle this one then. My skepticism morphed into excitement when we were entering Gabriella's and I saw an authentic Vietnamese scooter in the window. The streets of Vietnam are LITTERED with scooters. I've never seen anything like it. How I didn't see one accident in my 2 weeks there will never make sense to me. You wouldn't get it though because you haven't been.... After walking through a small rustic space with beat up walls and a gritty open kitchen, we were seated at a high-top table. I only made it about 27 seconds before I told the waitress I had just recently gotten back from Vietnam, expecting her to be like "Wow this half Croatian half Mexican American guy was just in Vietnam?! He's so cultured and well traveled!" When I informed her I had gone to Northern and Southern Vietnam, she scolded me on how I missed the best part of the country which is right smack in the middle. "The food better, the beach better, everything better! Why you no go to Central Vietnam?!?" I was getting COOKED. She really was so vibrant and engaging, and a good waitress like this can really make your experience at a restaurant. She also confirmed the authenticity of Gabriella's as she was from, you guessed it, Central Vietnam. She helped us decide on food, and we opted to pull the trigger on the Water Fern Dumplings, Chicken Wings, Shaken Beef, and Brussel Sprouts. I had never come across dumplings like these, as they are essentially unwrapped. All the fixings are in the individual bowls with the dough at the bottom, but you put your preferred amount of fish sauce on each one and eat it with a spoon. I loved them, DELICIOUS. No matter what you do, no matter where you come from, you need to get these chicken wings with the fish sauce. I, like you probably reading this, was skeptical about fish sauce on chicken wings but these were some of the best chicken wings I've had this year. Sometimes two things you would never think of putting together can be a perfect fusion. Yin and Yang. The Shaken beef was ELITE, tender and juicy just as any good beef should be served... and don't even get me STARTED on these flash fried brussel sprouts. Vietnamese coffee is a must-try! We ordered takeout today and had a very quick experience. The owner is friendly, and the environment is clean. This is my second time visiting, and I definitely want to come back for more coffee! The only downside is the difficulty in finding parking, but it's definitely worth it. We went to Gabriella's on a Sunday night in February of 2023. We dined with some good friends that had read about Gabriella's in the New York Times as being named to their top restaurant list in 2022. Let me tell you, the word is out and it is not easy to get a reservation at Gabriella's. We settled on a 4:45 PM time slot and we also scored parking about three doors down on Passyunk. This was after one unsuccessful and embarrassing attempt parallel parking in a tighter spot. I really enjoy Vietnamese food. It is probably my favorite of Asian cuisines with Thai running a very close second. I especially enjoy South East Asian street food, so Gabriella's was a must try. My wife and I have tried several Vietnamese restaurants in Philly and in South Jersey. Our friends were having Vietnamese cuisine for the first time. The menu is compact which is good and there were dishes I was familiar with and some also new to me. We ordered family style and shared all the dishes which gave us a fairly good sampling of the menu. This is what we ordered. SAVORY CREPES - BÁNH XÈO MIỀN TRUNG MINI COCONUT CAKES - BÁNH KHỌT SHAKEN BEEF - BÒ LÚC LẮC SIZZLING CATFISH - CHẢ CÁ THĂNG LONG SEAFOOD FRIED RICE - CƠM CHIÊN HẢI SẢN (GF) We all thought all of the dishes above were very, very good with some great flavors. We made the trip out for dinner and was seated outdoors, which was perfect for a cool evening. We ordered water fern dumplings, savory crepes, shaken beef, and seafood fried rice. The presentation of all four dishes were beautiful. Since we're from Southern California and have eaten a lot of Vietnamese food, the flavors were lacking for us. This was my second time dining here and unfortunately, I left feeling quite disappointed. I had a great meal the first time however, it seems that the restaurant has made some changes to their BYOB policy which really changed the experience. They're now focusing on offering their own selection of wine and spirits. The selection was very limited, and the glasses of wine were to be frank, garbage. The place feels like it's lost some of its original charm. If you are going to serve alcohol please have a full bar or consider charging a corkage fee. I've been wanting to try Gabriella's Vietnam for forever, and was finally able to go for a cute date night. We were seated in the most romantic table in the front part of the restaurant, the little two seater that you can see from the window outside (if you go on a date, absolutely try to request this table it was the best vibe). We ordered a ton of different dishes, and no exaggeration every single one was a winner. We ordered their tamarind and I think it was pickled apricot drinks, which were so delicious and hard not to just sip down immediately. For appetizers we got the water fern dumplings (an ABSOLUTE must get) and their savory crepes. For mains, we got the seafood fried rice to eat with our soft shell crab. That soft shell crab was the best bite I've had in a while, it was so perfectly crispy and fried and insanely juicy. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be between the dumplings and the crab. To finish everything off we tried their flan and it was also so good, the caramel had a slightly smoky taste and the flan itself was so creamy and thick, not one of those flans that veered more towards gelatin. The quality of everything even to the simple dessert was so obvious. Everything was so good and just in general it's one of the best meals I've had in a while, worth every single penny. Gabriella's Vietnam deserves every accolade it's gotten in every Philly mag and food spot and I cannot wait to come back another time and it's one of my fave spots for sure now. We got martini and Saigon smash for drinks, the Saigon smash was good but too sweet for me. We shared the crepes, water fern dumplings, wings, soft shell crab, and prawn mango salad. Our favorites were the dumplings and wings. Wings were so crispy and flavorful! The prawns were a bit dry, pancakes were good but could've had more flavor, and the soft shell crab were too greasy for our liking but other people raved about it so it's a personal opinion of course. Great place to try out some Vietnamese flavors in Philly! Went here alone to try some dishes that I missed from my mom's cooking. Got the bánh xèo crepes and the Bánh Bột Lọc a while back. Personally, the bánh xèo lacked depth, though the main flavors were there; I prefer them with more batter/moister and additional toppings, such as mung beans, etc. I was pleasantly surprised with the Bánh Bột Lọc -- super flavorful and a great texture. Wish I was able to try some of the main dishes, but would have loved to share the street dishes with friends. The service was great and I got lots of recommendations; the vibes of the restaurant are very homey and unparalleled, perfect for an intimate or fun night. Finally made it to Gabriella's Vietnam BYOB for dinner! Thankfully the group I went with wanted to try a bunch of dishes, so we ordered family style and shared. Service was great from start to finish: note, there is a credit card fee, so cash is ideal. We started with two "Street Food" offerings: - Water Fern Dumplings (BÁNH BÈO CHÉN), which were open-faced, steamed rice cakes, topped with minced shrimp, pork crackling, mung beans, fried shallot, and scallion. They were less flavorful than I was expecting, though better with more mint garnish. - Savory Crepes (BÁNH XÈO MIỀN TRUNG), which were sizzling savory crepes, pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, Vietnamese herbs, lettuce for wrapping. I've never seen or had banh khot anywhere before, so Gabriella's has an automatic 5 stars for them - especially because they are absolute perfection. Crispy on the bottom and so soft as to be custardy on the inside, they are the perfect appetizer. I even ended up getting a cast iron takoyaki pan so I can make them myself. Anyway, onto the rest of the food and the ambiance: reservations were fairly easy to make by phone, and they were flexible about accommodating us last minute when we wanted to move our reservation up. It was not very busy at 5pm on a Saturday. The restaurant is spacious and dimly lit for ambiance but not great for food photos. We ended up shining a light on our food for the photos I uploaded. + Banh beo chen (water fern dumplings) - $14 - 8/10 - I have a very hard time finding these in Vietnamese restaurants, and I was really excited for them. I think these come in various styles, and this happens to be the style that I prefer. I wouldn't say that these are particularly amazing, but I just really like this dish. + Vermicelli platter - $32 - 7/10 - This was definitely a good platter for 4 people because there's a little bit of everything. The shrimp sauce is very authentic; it was so pungent that I really could not stomach it at all. I tried it twice and almost gagged the second time, but my mom actually liked it a lot. She said there's a very similar sauce in HK cuisine, which was news to me. I liked the tofu and rice/pork patties best; it seemed like our table had different preferences. I'm usually a pretty adventurous eater so I was very disappointed in myself for not being able to eat this, but I think it speaks to the authenticity of the restaurant. I was also surprised that there were no wrappers included. + Sizzling catfish - $24 - 8/10 - This is actually very good, and the shrimp sauce here is totally different from the shrimp sauce for the vermicelli platter - a lot more palatable, spicier, and a little sweet. I really liked the spices with the fish and the sauce, but I was primarily disappointed that this was NOT the sizzling fried catfish with DIY summer roll wrappers like I had envisioned. Since it said vermicelli noodles and herbs, we assumed wrong. Now we know we're supposed to get the fried fish. + Banh khot - $20 - 10/10 - Now that I see how much it costs, I realize I may not just want to order 5 platters of this for myself, but all the more reason to make it at home. It was soooo good and I almost cried with happiness eating this. I am primarily giving Gabriella's 5 stars for this. Overall, this place is great; one of my Vietnamese friends said he was not impressed, but mostly because he can get similar food back home in Colorado for much cheaper. I'm sure that's true, since I've had comparable banh xeo and fried fish for much cheaper in LA, but I honestly have not come across much good Vietnamese food on the East Coast, especially in NYC where I live. There are some great Vietnamese restaurants in NYC now, but none with banh chen, banh khot, or fried fish in summer rolls. read more

Not worth the hype. Heard a lot about Gabriella's Vietnam, but I was disappointed by the actual food here. Service was great here and the restaurant was also really cute inside! Ambiance is 10/10 but food is 4.5/10. The seafood fried rice was nothing special. It was honestly comparable to grocery store frozen fried rice. The chicken was hard to eat because there were so many bones and the chicken itself was slightly dry. The best thing we tried was probably the shaken beef, but it still didn't "wow" me.
