If you're looking for truly authentic, high quality Cajun food (I.e. gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etouffee, stuffed crabs, shrimp, etc.) in a nice casual environment, away from the tourist traps... this is the best there is in New Orleans... or anywhere else for that matter. If you're intimidated by the cost of the $135 fixed price menu or by the communal dining tables.... You can do what we did... show up (early or late, not on Friday or Saturday) without a reservation, hopefully get a seat at the bar or some other open 2-top, and order from the bar menu... which includes items on main menu. After eating at dozens of high-end restaurants (St. Germaine, Herbsaint, Etoile, August, N7, Emeril's, etc.) over the past 4 months... it was the best and most authentic meal we had. The service and cocktails were excellent as well. Do yourself a favor... go to this place and soak up the food and atmosphere. This place was just a really fun experience. Great with friends, but we also saw a few couples making it a date night spot. It's not fancy, but it's got a cool vibe. The absolute standout was Velma Marie's oyster soup. I've honestly never had anything like it -- it was just so damn good. Rich, comforting, and completely unforgettable. I'd go back for that alone. Everything else was really solid too. The sweet potatoes cornbread with Steen's butter, citrus-poached shrimp, and Higgins crab claws were all delicious! We easily could've ordered seconds of those. On the pricey side but well worth it! You do need reservations, and it's prepay. Tip is included, but ofc you can tip more on top -- our waiter was superb! It's in a nice older home in a mostly residential neighborhood, not obviously a restaurant. So don't worry, you're probably not lost. :) We booked late, and were at a small table by ourselves instead of the long communal table. This ended up being serendipitous bc we were both SO tired -- we'd been tramping around all day in the cold and on-and-off rain, and if we'd been talking to everyone over several courses, we would have been whatever comes beyond exhausted, bc we were exhausted after. They cooked things they've obviously cooked many times before, with ingredients from smaller farms and vendors that are VERY high quality. My favorite things were the shrimp, the cabbage roll with cinnamon rice that came with the duck confit, and an off-menu bonus oyster, which was super sustainably harvested and the cleanest-tasting oyster I recall having eaten! A brightpoint? Just superb. Everything was wonderful -- I am a fan of duck and cooked oysters, but for me the shrimp, raw oyster, and cabbage roll turned out to be the standouts. On the other hand, my friend's favorites were the crab legs and the sweet potato biscuits with coarse sanding sugar on top, served with truly excellent butter -- her last bite of biscuit was more butter than biscuit, and frankly none of that butter should go to waste! And I think she liked the buttermilk ice cream even more than I did. Come hungry. :) The first few courses were light, enough so that I wondered if we ought to go for jazz and dessert after, despite us already being SO tired. Half a po boy is dessert, right? After the oyster soup, which had a clear broth made without water, only oyster liquor and tomatoes, I thought I could probably manage with just a more conventional dessert. After the duck I felt no bonus dessert was needed. By the time I finished the buttermilk ice cream in surprisingly deep glasses, I had difficulty standing up! All the food was excellent here. We ordered two cocktails, one of which was solid, the other okay -- please don't hit me, but I kinda feel New Orleans cocktails tended to be only so-so, but ofc we were not here very long. The only thing that was NOT good was the coffee, which arrived in a super-pretty white enameled cast iron Le Creuset press with a gorgeous handmade ceramic mug. I did not order it; I saw the weirdest look on my friend's face when she took a sip, so ofc I had to try. ((BEGIN anti-NOLA-coffee mini essay: I honestly don't get it, bc food in New Orleans is a revelation. The cafe au lait is highly enjoyable. We've been to several good places and the coffee is just truly, actually bad. I am not a coffee snob -- if the coffee were okay I'd either say so or not bring it up, not make a point of bashing it into the ground. But the free coffee you get in hotels from the cheapest Keurigs is far superior. McDonalds and most gas stations have better coffee. The waiter was such a nice guy that if not for that and the fact that all the coffee we had in New Orleans was just terrible, I'd think there was something going on beyond what appears to be a city-wide curse. Even here, probably the best place we ate while we were in New Orleans, it's explicably bad. No, it's not a problem with chicory coffee -- I like chicory coffee, plus this wasn't chicory coffee. Frankly, I'm deeply puzzled by the terrible New Orleans coffee (not by the cafe au lait, which we didn't order here if it's even on their menu), but the way to handle it is simply to order something else, bc there's a lot of wonderful things available. Don't order the coffee and hopefully you won't miss it, or order it and you may literally be left with a bad taste in your mouth! Enough of us drink coffee we deserve to be warned. :) END anti-NOLA-coffee mini essay.)) Definitely come to the Mosquito Supper Club if you can get reservations and swing their fair but high ticket price, and don't have dietary restrictions that get in the way of their set menu. Ask the waiter which cocktails/non-alcoholic drinks they recommend. Arrive hungry, and maybe plan for a nice after-dinner walk -- if you have an average-ish appetite, you'll be full! (I'm not a heavy eater generally, except on vacation when I tend to be much more active and self-indulgent, and EAT! Despite only having shared a boba since brunch, and having walked all day in the cold and light rain, I left just on the cusp of being uncomfortably full, which is ofc completely on me.) One of the best meals I've had in New Orleans with some food standouts and a super fun communal dinning experience if you are into that sort of thing. Highlight were the roux-less gumbo, succotash with perfectly fried okra, little sweet potato rolls and stuffed crabs. It finish with a lovely apple galette. The little crab claws served in a pool of clarified butter was supper decadent but a bit in no man's landing terms of temp. I could eat the watermelons salad with peanuts but it got good reviews around the table. The gumbo is served with both rice and potato salad as I understand that is a controversial topic. And hey we are here for a good time. The menu change though and is just part of the vibe. The restaurant is in a little old house just north of the garden district. The staff are hip friendly folks. I was at a 8 person table that felt more like eating at a dinner party than a restaurant. Part of that feeling is created by the pay-ahead biz model, which means that you don't even pull out your wallet unless you order drinks. There are private tables available if you prefer and a bar with bites if you don't have a reservation. My understanding once upon a time the dinner started with more storytelling about where things were sourced and the stories behind the food. Our waiter gave us a bit of that and invited questions but I craved more and our table was so distracted by each other that no one else asked any questions. The I was stuffed by the end but felt like the pacing was a bit fast as there were so many people to talk with. I think 30 more minutes or formally moving us to the bar for dessert or something would have given us a soft end to the night. I can only review the walk in part of the restaurant as I haven't yet fully dined here. But the bar alone is reason enough to go here. Knowlegable bartenders and attentive hosts are everywhere even though their main focus are the diners. Everything is high quality and prepared deliciously. The restaurant looks just like a house both on the inside and outside, with minimal changes to a house layout. I plan on returning here to dine in the future, but if you cannot I would still recommend showing up here just to experience a good bit of class. read more

Although the dining room is primarily communal, we were seated at a two-top in the main living room, which still felt connected to the energy of the space. Our server was warm and engaging, clearly proud of both the food and the philosophy behind it. She explained the four-course prix fixe menu and the restaurant's focus on locally and sustainably sourced ingredients from family farms throughout the region. As each course arrived, she shared the origins of the ingredients and helped me select thoughtful zero-proof cocktail pairings. When I asked about one of the small coastal towns where the restaurant sources its oysters, she pulled up a map on her phone and showed me exactly where they came from--an attention to detail that felt both genuine and personal. The meal began with a welcome bite of a sweet potato biscuit served with cane syrup butter, followed by an oyster on the half shell. The oysters were small, sweet, and exceptional--some of the best I've ever had. The first course featured a poached shrimp salad with citrus, trout roe, and crab claws with garlic butter. Gumbo was the worst gumbo I've eaten in the state of Louisiana. Staff was average or below average. Booking experience was horrible. The juice isn't worth the squeeze. They are obviously catering to a tourist audience but it's sad to sell the culture this way. The food is good but it's not fine dining and they are charging fine dining prices. They drop a pot and ladle and expect you to serve yourself. They are serving cabbage rolls, which is crazy for over $100 per person before drinks, tax, and tip. The "story" is not worth losing an experience with true professionals who give you the service that New Orleans is known for globally. Go to Commander's or Antoine's. There is outdoor seating and bar seating for a la carte customers. The space is small with very little seating for a la carte guests, so keep that in mind. The food is amazing. I had the crab bisque here, and it was so rich and light at the same time. I could taste the quality of the crab in the bisque. It tasted fresh, local. Their cocktails are very unique, strong. Fantastic meal I would definitely go back.. made a last minute rez for 1 at the community table when my flight got moved from 7 pm to noon and I found out i needed dinner plans. Had to check with wife because she wasnt on this trip and wanted to go to Mosquito Supper Club for a good long while. The food was excellent. Started off with some biscuits and a sweet butter. Biscuits were great a little more bready than a traditional flaky biscuit. Then crab claws and pickled shrimp. The crab claws were amazing super meaty and fresh tasting. I ended up ordering crab claws everywhere i went that week trying in vain to recreate the experience. Pickled shrimp were also very good, only slightly picked tasting so very fresh and crispy. The guy next to me loved the shrimp and didnt love the crab so we swapped out remainder. Community table was super fun crowd. Everyone was tourists from different parts of country and talkative and eager to share the food with one another. There was a small group at end of table there on business dinner but they also chatted with everyone as well. Next course was a brightside small oyster for each person. I dont think this was on menu and a single oyster is t filling but it was part of a long dinner and followed by oyster soup that was amazingly flavorful. The broth was made from the oyster juice (i am not sure of word for that) and along with oysters it had sausage and a lil veg perhaps -- i am not exactly sure what was in it but fantastic it was. Main courts was duck leg and thigh confit, with a salad and a stuffed cabbage. The stuffed cabbage was surprisingly good. It was stuffed with sausage and covered in tomato sauce. The duck was amazing as well, but i love duck and rarely have restaurant duck i dont like. Dessert was a goat cheese sorbet and a flaky strudel. I am not a goat cheese fan but it was delish. For the price of the "experience" they could put a couple dozen on the communal table 4. Basket of bread - 1 small piece for each of us? Bread is cheap and filling - go all out! Might fill us up a bit! Also no butter to go with 5. Salad - basically a bowl of arugula - not special 6. Main was a small stuffed crab - no more than a bite or two They said we would leave full - we did not. I could have eaten double what was served. Had chicken strips on Frenchman a couple hours later! The two of us paid $600 for the night. I'd say value was more like $200-300. For that kind of cash, I say go all out at Acamaya instead! It is a cool concept - they just don't go all out. We had a coursed chef's tasting with wine pairings from 2014 to celebrate their 10th anniversary! Mosquito Supper Club is a truly unique restaurant. Visitors often leave saying they felt like they went to dinner at a friend's house. Sitting inside a restored Victorian cottage in Uptown, New Orleans -- Mosquito Supper club hosts chef's tasting menus at 2 large communal tables, each set for 10 (and there are just a couple of 2-tops for a regular menu). Chef Melissa Martin, who started this place 10 years ago, was raised on home-cooked Cajun food -- and 90% of her restaurant's dishes were passed down to her from her mother. She gets nearly 100% of her ingredients from local fishermen and farmers, educates visitors on the history and flavors of Cajun cooking, and passionately advocates for the preservation of Louisiana wetlands and coastal communities. Her recent cookbook is titled, "Cajun Recipes from a Disappearing Bayou" -- and that's what she serves at her restaurant. Standout dish of the night: a crawfish bisque with stuffed heads: I've never had anything like it, but I want more! WOW this experience was amazing! Coming from Houma, LA, we were so excited to see how our favorite classic Cajun dishes would shine through in the menu. Chef Melissa's creations did not disappoint! Everything tastes like our grandparents and great grandparents classic dishes, but even better (don't tell them I said that!) You can truly feel the love and intentionality in every bite from appetizers to dessert. We were brought back to our favorite childhood summers in Cocodrie and Grand Isle with the local seafood, especially the oyster soup. Highly recommend the wine pairing! 3 main points to review: 1st the food. Really fantastic food, the type of elevated experience that comes back to being an authentic "just like my mother used to make" experience. The oyster soup was incredible, the duck was fantastic, all in all phenomenal food. 2nd the atmosphere. Truly nails the idea of "grandmothers dining room table" vibe from the literal house the restaurant is in, to the tables, chairs, and general interactions with the staff which was very well done. 3rd the communal dining experience. I'll admit I am not the most extraverted person, and I'll also admit I prefer the have the option to sit back in a communal dining experience and contribute minimally while enjoying my food. But in this scenario there was 3 other people besides my wife and I. At a certain point my food started to get cold because of a direct conversation that was directed my way. I can't say meeting and learning the stories of these individuals lives wasn't a unique and valuable experience, because it was. But the group being so intimate meant I had to be very socially present the entire time. If there had been 2-4 additional people at the table, I would have had a much better time. This effectively felt like a blind dinner date which for me was fairly draining and distracting from what was largely incredible food. read more

Unpretentious and dedicated to authentic food that brings the community together. I came here from out of town on a Friday for my reserved booking and then found myself drawn back each subsequent night for à la carte service until I had to return to reality after the close of Jazz Fest. What brought me back was equally the warmth of the food as well as the service. Everything was delightful-from the balanced artisan cocktails to the Steen's butter/biscuit starter to the crab claws and the crawfish stew. I loved that Steen's butter so much I couldn't bear to leave it on the plate! So, to save myself from continuing to furtively lick it off my knife in slices, I asked for it to be boxed up and the bartender, Jerry, made my night by packing me some more biscuit to go along with it for the morning. And boy, was it great in the morning too...I savored each crumb while reminiscing about last-night's meal which continued to live on in my mind. I love their dedication to Louisiana seafood culture and uncompromising nature of keeping everything as it is - take it or leave it. Seafood lovers will not be disappointed. The accompanying veg makes it all pop! Try all the oysters. The mignonette is magic. The other really interesting nature of this restaurant is how it facilitates people to meet other diners with a communal element to all of its settings. It's in an unassuming historic house with picnic benches in the front yard for à la carte diners. I sat at the foyer bar the first night and had a great time making fast friends with the couple beside me. Further in the house are long tables that really foster a family feel. I struggled a bit to write this review, because I wanted so badly for this meal -- our last dinner in NOLA at the end of a week-long visit -- to be fantastic. But I think my expectations were too high, so a few minor things left me feeling "meh" about the experience. As others have noted, I felt a disconnect between the sort of "take it or leave it" attitude on the booking website vs the welcoming tone of the host when we arrived. I had to psych myself up just to make the reservation (could I, as the website said, "handle" their philosophy and rules?) -- so I wasn't sure what to expect. But I resolved to follow the directions on the website, "check [my] energy" and try to enjoy the experience, and walking up to the house and settling in, the ambience was warm. The food was good, and some dishes -- the biscuits, the duck confit -- were terrific. But others (including, unfortunately, the oyster soup) were unremarkable or didn't seem cohesive within a course. I'm glad we chose the non-communal dining option, although we were seated next to it. And sadly, one of those patrons spent a *long* time, at several moments during dinner, bragging to the sommelier about their own travels and wine purchases, which kinda killed the mood for me. I realize that's not MSC's fault...but it was disappointing, and the food and service weren't enough to wow me. read more

Tables were family style and reservation had a seating which left an intimate family style experience with an old classic New Orleans home. The gumbo had quite a bit of heat on it, but it was fun that it was served with both rice and potato salad and we were encouraged to try it both ways. IFKYK. We did the wine paring, which I think we would skip next time. Pours were generous, but I'm not sure it added much to the meal. We had a phenomenal meal at Mosquito Supper Club. I was a little nervous about the price, but it was FULLY worth it. Not only was everything perfectly made, the ingredients were of the highest quality and the portions were generous. For the first course, we had the biscuits (best I've ever had), crab claws, and shrimp. Then came the gumbo (extremely clean tasting from the cooked down okra, umami but not heavy). Then the crab cakes...stuff inside a crab shell. Gorgeous presentation, and more crab than I've ever had in a crab cake. The salad was nice but we barely had room. This was the gastronomic highlight of our time in New Orleans. Hands down. Better than Peche. Better than Cochin, Commanders Palace and every other restaurant we tried. The ingredients are fresh. The technique is excellent. The presentation is artistic and exciting. The flavors are complex, subtle and hard to describe because they are using uncommon spices and ingredients. The food was alright, but unspectacular. Certainly not worth the price they charge. I was underwhelmed to say the least. The wine tasting was comical. 4 sips of wine for $55. Two were undrinkable. I had to order beers and cocktails because the wine pairing wasn't nearly enough to satisfy, in addition to not being good. The communal dining aspect isn't ideal. I get they are going for the "community" feel, but if I'm paying $200+ per person, I don't want to have to serve myself soup from a pot. The two waitresses were as nice as can be, but the manager was not. So to eat here with the wine pairing, you prepay $165 plus 20% tip and 10% tax. Well my wife came down with COVID day of, so we tried calling - except they don't have a working phone. So I showed up to the restaurant to try to reason with the manager, and her quote was along the lines of "you wouldn't get a refund or rescheduled for a concert if you had Covid, so we won't do it for you either." Their unwillingness to attempt to accommodate a Covid infected pre paid patron was offensive. They would rather take your money and potentially infect other patrons via communal dining than even attempt to reschedule you. The food and wine isn't anywhere near worth the price, and when you factor in the prepay absurdity and the pompous pretentiousness of the management, I could never recommend wasting your money here. read more

This is one of the finest dining experiences in New Orleans. However, if you don't want a curated very tight series of dishes, in a family environment, don't come. This is a very specific place. I was really excited for an interesting meal here, I came around the holidays with my husband, parents, and brother. We're all adventurous diners and travelers so it seemed like a neat experience. I had a friend come with her husband and they highly recommended it. The whole vibe of the place was they kept saying they were here to make everyone feel right at home, and their focus was hospitality. So, my husband is allergic to oysters (we knew going in that he would sit that part of the meal out). I asked if he could have just a little more of the other items, such as the bread, and they said NO. I couldn't believe it, after all the constant hype about how they want to welcome you and make you feel at home, they wouldn't even give him another slice of bread (and especially for the price and the fact things are pretty much family style). The big table seating is generally fun, but we were sat next to the most sour of guests and it was so uncomfortable. They hardly ate a thing (again, deepening the insult that my husband couldn't just have a bit more of the other items being prepared), and didn't even say hello back or say anything if we asked to have an item passed. That's not the restaurants fault per se, but just know that by design you can't control your seat mates, and some times folks will lose out. But the final straw was that the owner/chef gave about a 30 minute speech about her approach to food and hospitality and it went on and on and on. It was very unwanted, seemingly by everyone. She kept asking if we all had questions and no one did...we just came to dine not for a recitation. It was so self centered and killed what little remained of a good vibe of our experience. Wow, what a great experience! I sat outside for the 8:30 prix fixe menu on a Saturday. Right from the start, the staff was extremely friendly. Their back courtyard is nice and cozy and the weather held out, which was perfect. You pay in advance for the prix fixe menu and you have an option to choose a wine pairing with it as well. There are also a bunch of cocktails and wines to choose from when you get there if you didn't choose the wine pairing. With every course, the staff was so knowledgeable about what they were bringing to you, it was nice. The food was amazing. I was honestly blown away right from the beginning. There were 3 things that came in the first round- oysters, shrimp and a sweet potato biscuit. The oysters were probably the best I ever had. The shrimp was so surprising with it's pickled flavor, and the biscuit with the cane butter - omg...so good!! Next was the beet salad. I honestly don't know what was my favorite so far at this point. Everything was absolutely perfect. The sald had a bit of yogurt cheese underneath, with pecans, radishes and vinaigrette. Such a perfect spring salad. The oyster soup paid hommage to the chef's life growing up. It was a simple noodle and oyster soup, but elevated for the tasting menu. The main course was red snapper with squash and snap peas. The snapper was cooked perfectly and fell apart with my fork. The kale and white bean puree at the bottom of the sides blended so well with everything - I tried to get a forkful of everything with each bite! To finish off, the dessert was a sheet cake in which they poke holes and put fresh strawberry syrup. It paired perfectly with the homemade "soda-esque" ice cream. My stomach was so happy when I left. A co-worker booked this dinner for us so I came into it unaware of anything about it. So glad I did. It was a pleasant surprise of a charming old house that looked like they just started serving out of it with no conversion to restaurant (note old bathtub in restroom), mix matched dishes, and laid-back family vibe that went right along with Chef's grandmother's recipes and locally sourced food which created a truly unforgettable dining experience. Some of the items I had were the best I have ever had. The one that stands out is the crab claws. So good. All the oyster dishes and stew were amazing as well. It was a prix-fix menu so I didn't order any of it. i can't remember what all we ate but it seemed like a ton of courses. Maybe it was multiple items in each course. Oh, the sweet potato biscuits, LORD. It's obvious all of the unassuming staff take great pride in what they deliver here and to be sure your experience is top notch. Their cookbook is great. Cute place, a bit bare inside (at least in the room where we were seated). The table for two was a bit too small and the chairs not overly comfortable. There was another table for two across the room as well as a table seating either 8 or 10 people. The service was good but it did begin with some short explanations of what was to come, which left us wondering what to expect as other similar dining experiences have begun with a bit more information. The initial drinks took a few minutes to get which sort of left us wondering when they (the drinks) would be served. The food was good. The portions incredibly small. The wine pairings varied, in my opinion, from very good to poor. All in all, a lackluster experience at a very high price, and an experience that I would not want to repeat. I think stopping at the bar and having drinks and perhaps a few a la carte food items is the way to go. It's a neat place with a great concept and the website suggests they take care of their employees, including an offering of health insurance, all of which, of course, comes at a cost passed on to the consumer. In our case, the cost was $556.00 for two, with the wine pairings, plus a few extra bucks for additional drinks. As a former New Orleanian, the experience may be a bit wasted on me. Those from out of town may enjoy the show. We hope to go back for drinks and food, but will try the bar next time...if we can get seats. read more
