I picked up their almond croissant from the PSU farmers market and was terribly disappointed. It's far from traditional and closer to stale plain flavorless bread with sliced almonds on top. It's not buttery, moist, and flaky with delicate layers. There's no almond cream filling inside or on top. read more

A fixture at many of the Portland Farmer's markets, they sell many varieties of their bread, which are made with earthy grains which I prefer over white flours. Same with their pastries; many have a mixture of flours and are made with less sugar and butter than most bakery items putting them on the light side of sweet. For example, their blackberry scone is very reminiscent of a true British scone that is dry and just lightly sweetened and used as the base for clotted cream and jam, not usually eaten on its own. The best item in my opinion is the spinach, feta, jalapeño roll. It's like a spicy spanakopita but with bread rather than phyllo dough. I always take it home and heat it up in the toaster oven. Yum! So much better when warm and the flavors intensify. They also have a fennel cookie that I like. It's shaped like a ball, it's very dense and dry, and has the licorice flavor from the fennel. The best thing about Gabriel's is that they're local -- family owned and operated since 1987 -- and their products are made with a variety of whole grains and a mix of organic and sustainable products. I found THE best coconut macaroons with chocolate. That was like having your first . . . . (fill in the blanks), this was @ the Parkrose Farmer's Market. I don't like macaroons that much, but who doesn't love chocolate! I've tasted other macaroons, elsewhere, but theirs just can't compare. We also tried making our own version, by adding chocolate, but theirs is still BETTER! At least now, we can make them ourselves! I have just not been satisfied with the breads I've bought here in Portland at New Seasons or Fred Meyer. I want a healthy bread that toasts well (not too hard or too soft after toasting) and good sandwich bread. I just bought their 8-grain at Fred Meyers in the healthfood section and I've found THE perfect bread! It's really tasty, not too thin or too small so you feel hungry after eating the sandwich!. Ah, so they are famous for their bagels? Gabriel's Bakery is a frequent vendor at the OHSU farmer's market every Tuesday, the day when I eagerly look forward to lunch time so I can get my blueberry almond scone from them. You can't miss those scones. They sit inside a classic wooden framed glass case next to some humongous cinnamon rolls, croissants, muffins, coffee cakes, cookies, etc., seducing you with their elegantly pampered faces. For $2-3.5, you get a pastry the size of an adult hand (if not larger)! Unlike generic baked goods that loom your senses with pounds of butter and sugar, Gabriel's pastries turn out much more humble, consisting of nuts or berries mixed in whole wheat flour, baked till edge is crispy, and maybe drizzled with powdered sugar or a thin layer of almond glaze. I keep wanting to take one bite after another. The lady told me they don't sell any pastry at the store. Don't buy their bagels. Blech! Nothing but round pieces of bread. Making bread in circular shapes does not make it a bagel. Good bagels are chewy. These aren't. I don't even think they were cooked thoroughly, since every bagel in our bag is white rather than golden brown. It's tough to find a decent bagel in Portland. OK, let me address their bagels. First I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoy Gabriel's Bakery Bagels. They toast well, they are tasty, and they make fantastic hamburger buns. Sure, from a purist's point of view (and I *am* a bagel purist) they are not bagels. But they're so tasty I'm willing to forgive them the name! My friend brought some of the three seed bangles over for me to try out. Considering I have a son who LOVES Bagels, he is the true taste tester. He rated these a 10! So did I as although I don't eat them often once I tired them I decided to pay more as they were WAY better than Costco/Einstein. These were a day old and even left in the fridge once I warmed on toasted them they were perfect, soft and the consistency awesome! I'm anxious to try the others. read more

Every time I stop by the PSU Saturday Farmer's Market, I get something from Gabriel's. Usually it's a piece of their large, inexpensive, phenomenal carrot cake that has some many nuts, raisins, etc. in it that I'm not really sure what holds it all together. I picked up a bag if their blueberry bagels from Fred Meyer this week. I don't like bagels you can buy at the store, but hate spending money on them at local places. Just like other reviewers said, these are not your standard bagels. They have more of a thicker roll consistency. But they are goooooood. Toasted with some cream cheese.... Yum! These are not bagels. These are fluffy burger buns with an indentation in the middle. Maybe, being an east coast Jew, my bagel standards are too high. Maybe if I had been given one of their bagels and was told it was a roll I would have found it acceptable. But calling these buns bagels is false advertising. Come on west coast! I have to agree with everyone else......I'm Jewish and I know bagels and these shouldn't be called bagels because they are not!!! However, they are very tasty rolls great for sandwiches and breakfast. There is lots of love in these but they need to change the name because anyone who knows real bagels know these are not.
