Recently participated in an authentic Mexican cooking class. Was lots of fun. The spread of food the twelve of us prepared was delicious. So why the 2 star rating????? We were promised 16 pages of recipes to accompany the experience. The recipes were never sent. I have requested twice for what was promised by the chef himself. Good but not great. Margarita specials were WAYYY too sweet so much so we didn't finish and ordered something else. And the waiter said he tells the bartender all the time they are too sweet but apparently that doesn't matter. The setting is nice with open air seating options although not a lot of ambience. This quaint restaurant offers exceptional view of El Malecon. As you reach the restaurant, you go up a flight of stairs and be seated on their beautiful outside patio. Keep in mind there are people's balconies literally a few feet from our table :) SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! We were a group of 13 who wanted to escape our all inclusive horrible food options. We came across Gaby's and decided to enjoy our evening there. We were offered margaritas "on the house" but I think we did end up paying for them consider our bill was $500 US dollars. Nice way to end the day We had walked about 12 KM's (7.5 miles), were a little tired, hungry and thirsty. Gaby's is located a few blocks from the Malecon, on a very steep street. We had a GREAT!! meal - "World Famous GABY'S Fajita's", "Grande Burrito" with amazing street views from the terrace, wonderful service, ice cold beer (very important), AMAZING location...and do not forget the dessert (like a creme brûlée's without the brûlée's , not too sweet, delicious)...the waiter jokingly told us that if we didn't like the dessert he would pay, it was a safe bet because everyone loves the dessert :) read more

Had seen some YouTube shoutouts and good reviews on Gaby's so decided to book a res during our recent trip to Puerta Vallarta. We had a lovely outdoor table overlooking the street and water at the end. Twinkle lights and trees made for a romantic dinner despite the loud chatty lady next to us. Great service as promised in reviews. Mango smoothie (I don't drink alcohol) was pretty good and my special fish dinner amazing! They do great seafood in PV. My husband's fried fish tacos were ok but could not compare to grilled fish ones he'd had elsewhere (they didn't have grilled ones at Gaby's and should). The ambience is great and food good/unique. Really loved this restaurant. We got the mole and the chile relleno and both were excellent. The table next to us ordered the Cesar salad and the waiter spent almost 10 minutes making the dressing from scratch right at their table. A great find two blocks above the malecon, with a nice view and breeze on the second story balcony. My bloody mary was spicy and my husband's cadillac margarita was a good deal. People aren't kidding, the guacamole here is perfect, served with fresh, homemade tortilla chips. We asked for their mas picante hot sauce, and it was flavorful and homemade. Gaby became our new favorite hidden gem in PV, one block from the crowned church, so easy to find. read more

Fantastic food, great service in this little tucked away spot on the hill. We sat out on the terrace with a view of the ocean. Ordered coffee (with cinnamon) and they brought cinnamon toast with it while we read the menu. The place was great and close it to my hotel. The food was not bad but not perfect. Clean place nice , but one thing which is very important . No one in there pays attention to it. 1 lack of management and guidance. 2 staff needs a lots of training and learn how to treat customers 3 That's the only way you will win customers. I went there because I checked them on the internet and they have four stars on Google rating. The food was not bad but the staff lack a lots of training . I always go on vacation and I always visit a lots of restaurants , this is the only one I visited where your empty dishes stays on the table without anyone pick them up.I even stacked them on the top of each other so someone can see that and remove them but no one did. And an advice from a good customer to the manager.You shoud tell your employees to pay attention to the coffee thermos. It is white and it should be spotless and clean . Because it was filthy and disgusting looking at it when the guy is refilling my coffee . If the service was great I would have gave them five stars but I'm glad I gave them 2 * because even when I was leaving there was two employees at the bottom of the stairs did not even say thank you or come back nothing whatsoever as we don't exist.. Not recommended. I hope you don't misunderstand me , I have left the stuff 15% tips because I'm a generous person . We came here to splurge a bit on ourselves. We were staying about a block up the hill so it was a perfect spot. The wait staff are extra flirty but very kind and friendly. We each had a larger margarita for 110 pesos ($6). We shared the Cinco de Mayo platter which was massive. We also had the plantain empanadas and then the banana flambé for dessert. The total for the bill came out to about 1200 pesos (about $60). The food was good but we had some better eats in Sayulita. The atmosphere was the most important part of this place - if seated outside you have a beautiful ocean view and they also project music videos onto the building right across the way. They really try to upsell you at this place. I want sure if it was just our table or everyone, but they really try to get you to leave with a bottle of raicilla ($25). It's basically Mexican moonshine. If you like it, I say go for it. Overall, it's a romantic spot for all you lovebirds ;). read more

I've been eating in Vallarta for 25 years and have never topped Gaby's. The seafood chimichanga is more than delicious, perfect, and scrumptious combined. The fried outer tortilla is flaky and oily, crispy, and provides a perfect shell to the gooey fillings. The latter amount to a creamy pile of tender shrimp, a touch of spice, seasoned rice, and fatty beans. The dish is unbelievably satisfying. The soups I've had here are similarly luscious and really well-done. Super flavorful broth and al dente ingredients like ripe avocado and stewed shrimp. The setting - especially the upper level - is sweet and romantic with open balconies and soft mariachi. Service is standard and kind. read more

So, here's the lowdown. The food is okay. It's not bad, but it's certainly not inexpensive. The lobster enchiladas were good, but need salt. From reading other reviews, the enchiladas are supposedly a special, but they seem to have them all the time; they're just not on the menu. Oh, and the are $499 pesos, nearly $30 dollars American. The passion fruit margaritas were good, but at $130 pesos these are more expensive than most fruit-based margaritas in the U. S. My wife was chapped because they brought bottled water (this I understood) and charged for it. But the real kicker is the tortilla soup "appetizer" we were served. Qe thought this was part of the meal, but was I surprised (and my wife pissed) when the soup showed up as a charge on the bill even if it was about $2 U.S. And at the table next to us, the gentleman ordered ceviche, which he had eaten earlier in the week. Upon his return today, he ordered the same only tk discover it was a different dish. He was told he was served ceviche Puerto Vallarta style and that the other day he must have ordered the ceviche Acapulco style. He did not like or eat it; he was told there was nothing the server could do. Another "satisfied" Gaby's customer. If you come to Gaby's to eat, let me say this place is caveat emptor. We have eaten very good meals at Gaby's many times, but this is a review for the cooking class with Chef Julio Cesar Castillón. It is an excellent adventure and you should take the class. Deborah K wrote a great and accurate review on 27APR2019. It began promptly at 0900 after a few welcoming words from Julio we took a brisk 20+ walk to Mercado Emiliano Zapata. Julio picked out veggies, chicken, fish, masa and queso all the while explaining the how and why of each ingredient. (This is not a class for the mobility impaired.) A quick taxi ride back to Gaby's to save some time. Lots of fun prep work with our fellow students who were all foodies and competent cooks. Some alcohol (separate purchase) might have been involved. The knives were sharp. All in all, we made: * 6+ salsas * Ceviche * Guacamole * Tortilla soup * Chiles Rellenos. These were fabulous. Very simple: poblanos and cheese; deep fried. * Chicken with mole. An incredible mole with over a dozen spices. You get tons of food. More than you can eat. You have a great time with your fellow students. $900/person for the class. $200/person for drinks. read more

A small place with multiple floors. The food was on point and the service was amazing. My girlfriend and I ordered the seafood platter for a reasonable price. The guacamole was really good and served with what appears to be traditional chips. And best of all with the food and service. The Resturant will forever stand out with the end of meal hand wash dish given to us upon the request of our check. Tourist don't be scared of this establishment, they do speak English. Great date night spot or special occasion spot in PVR. We had a very nice and warm evening and got to sit outside to people watch and enjoy the summer night sky (in February!). The servers are on top of it and make for a more luxury feel. I had the veggie fajitas with lots of good vegetables and guacamole. Their top shelf margarita is also quite yummy too. We were even treated to a firework show along the Bay during dinner. The prices are definitely on the bigger side of PVR, so make it a treat. read more

I'd say a 2 1/2 star review is in order. The chicken mole I ordered was 'ok' but not in the same realm as Red Cabbage Cafe whose mole was a 5. You can definitely tell the difference. We had great food at this authentic Mexican restaurant. Gaby's is known for their moles and in this they didn't disappoint. But before I get to the food let's start with the tamarind Cadillac margarita. So big, and so tasty I almost wasn't able to finish my meal (don't worry, I finished it :). And the location with the terrace overlooking the street with a view to the ocean wasn't too shabby either. Now the food: to start I had the tortilla soup which was the best tortilla soup I've ever had (and I love tortilla soup). I followed this up with a chimichanga platter and my friend had the combination platter which had several small entrees highlighting various moles. They were both *excellent*. We left full and happy. I was very excited to check this place out. It was highly recommended by Airbnb reviews of the place I rented and the Yelp reviews also were positive. We went twice on the trip and the first time was definitely more "friendly" than the last. We sat indoors during mid-afternoon and ordered drinks and appetizers. We weren't hungry for more but it felt like the owner/waitstaff expected more. We were then given a very hard sales pitch for local Tequila/Mezcal. It was fine but it went too far. After saying no (I don't like straight booze) the friendliness went further down hill. We returned two days later for breakfast. He was very abrupt and unfriendly with us (odd since we were returning again and left a decent tip previously). The upside of the second visit is no sales pitch which was nice. The comments on "it's a locals place" couldn't be further than the truth. I'm a foodie and restaurant guy and you want to find authentic places. You'll get better food, better quality, and there won't be an uncomfortable sales pitch. If you want an Americanized touch.... the food isn't bad here. You can't go wrong here. Wide menu selection and great service. Stopped in for lunch and had the fresh catch of the day- a whole snapper grilled to perfection. It was served with mixed vegetables, but the were more for plate color. The fish was the main event.
