This place would be easy to miss if you don't venture away from the malecon. We stumbled on this place on our way to see the church. We had been walking for hours and were hungry. The menu outside looked good, so we took a chance on Gaby's. We were seated upstairs with a nice view of the ocean. Our waiter, Librado was very friendly and very knowledgable about the menu. He took his time to explain things to us. The chips and salsa were delicious. We ordered some tequila and lemonade. Both were good. I ordered the lobster. When the meal arrived, I was pleased to see my food. It looked delicious and it was to die for! The tail on that lobster was the truth! I'm still salivating thinking of it. Overall the food was great, and the location was great. Considering we got lobster, shrimps, tequila shots, and lemonades, it wasn't an expensive meal. Great restaurant! Truly a hidden gem of a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. The price is very reasonable for amazing gourmet dishes. My wife and I shared the Caesars Salad wherein they made the sauce from scratch in front of the table. I would say this is the best Caesar salad that I have ever had. During our 1 week vacation, we ate at Gaby's twice. On our second visit it was my sons 15th bday and we asked him where he would like to eat and without hesitation he chose this place for his birthday dinner. Disappointing, honestly. Others are right, the waiters are rather pushy and strongly encourage you to upgrade everything, from the size of your drink to the size of your order. It's exhausting enough to navigate hawkers on the malecon, I'd rather not have deal with similar tactics over dinner. The Veracruz sauce served with the molcajete was really quite good. However, the red snapper - the special off-menu fresh catch of the day - was truly mediocre, had clearly been previously frozen, and had that tell-tale fishy smell indicating that it was at least a few days old. Not off, but not fresh caught that day either. That was a real bummer, because I would have ordered something else had I not been lured by the temptation of fresh-off-the-boat fish. A-List. Just down the street from the church is a beautiful space called Gaby's. There are several levels of seating and the best seating is outside raised above the street with glimpses of the ocean and the fireworks from the Pirate Ship lurking in the dark off the coastline. You'll be met with a friendly greeting, a cool breeze, and comfortable seating. As for drinks, they really can make you pretty much anything you desire from smoothies, to traditional drinks to the more exotic flair. The food was very good to excellent. The chile rellenos - traditional and shrimp style were both well plated, with a thoughtful balance of rice, refried beans or vegetables. The rellenos was delicious, no question about it. The flan for dessert was competent but lacked that little extra to put it in another category. The servers are experienced, some speak English and made the evening fuss free. This establishment takes CREDIT CARDS. This restaurant is in the mid-price range and you can expect 2 drinks, 1 appetizer, 2 main dishes and perhaps 1 dessert to share to price out at around 600 to 800 p. Recommended. As always, for real. My family ran across this gem four years ago on vacation and have come back once a year since! The candy shop down the street or the tequila store on the malecon(beside the lighthouse) will give you coupons for free Guacamole. We've come to know the owner and he recognizes us each year. He interacts with the kids by doing a few small tricks at the table. I say it's for the kids, but we all enjoy it. Every year we see something we want to try the next year. For instance this year several of us had "Caesars Special" that consisted of fresh prawns and veggies, cooked table side--delicious! We finished off dinner with fruit and bananas foster, also made table side. Before leaving we saw another table ordered "Caesars coffee", which made my notes for next year. There seems to be a theme of a dish is "Caesars" it usually involves fire. If you happen to be there at dusk they project Linda Rondstadt music videos on the wall of the neighboring building. We had a solid meal here. As starters, we got Gaby's salad which was very refreshing. The spinach with beet root salad was so so. My husband got enchiladas which was as good as any he had in the states. I got molcajete, which was also delicious. The best part of dinner was talking with our server Luis, which was so friendly and attentive. We had other people tending to our table, Emanuel and another person. I would say the food here is a bit more of Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican but for those people who want that kind of food, this will be a fine dining choice. read more

This was my first time at this restaurant. The restaurant is cute and the table we sat at had a great view. The food was at best mediocre. I had the chicken burrito and the chicken had no flavor. My friend had coconut shrimp that also was mediocre. The worst part was the service was horrible. I highly recommend the Caesar salad, prepared table side with a protein of your choice. The preparation itself is a show. Classic preparation with egg yolk, olive oil, and all of the seasonings on romaine leaves with croutons. My wife enjoyed a chile relleno and we split some guacamole/chips. I took a cooking class here with my girlfriend. The teaching/head chef's name is Julio, he's a very friendly dude that took us around the local markets through the streets of old town to buy ingredients for the dishes we made in class. I couldn't be more happy with the experience that he gave us, we made several dishes from Chilies Rellenos, Chicken Molle Enchiladas, and dessert tamales. All the while having a nice conversation about current events and history of Mexican, Aztecan, Spanish culture. We were also served Raicilla, like tequila, but seasonal and it was strong. We took a cooking class during our trip to PV, and asked the organizer to recommend places to eat. His immediate response was Gaby's - and he put his fingers to his lips and kissed them. That's quiet a compliment, and we found that he was exactly right. We first went for breakfast at 8:30am, and they hadn't even officially opened yet but they let us sit down anyway, and brought coffee, water and a rustic cinnamon bread that was delicious while we waited for the kitchen to open. I had the fresh seasonal fruit with yogurt and granola - it was great, very fresh and tastes like they make their own granola because it was so crisp and toasty. I also got the perez tamal which was excellent and I ate every last bite - the tamal was soft and tender with an excellent cheese on top. My boyfriend got the flank steak los perez style with two scrambled eggs on top - the steak was cooked perfectly, it was tender and well seasoned and paired excellently with the cactus and the soft corn tortillas that they provide. It was the best breakfast he has ever had. We decided we had to come back for my boyfriend's birthday dinner, which was really birthday lunch so that we could make our flight on time. We got the plantain empanada appetizer - so delicious! - slightly sweet and crisped to perfection. I got the chile en nogada and it was incredible - the pepper was cooked perfectly and it was stuffed with very well seasoned beef with a nutty sauce over the top of everything. Of course, I ate every bite. My boyfriend got the Cinco de Mayo - it had a generous compliment of chicken mole, enchilada, tamal, chile relleno, and rice / beans. Everything was excellent - he really liked the tamal - they are top notch. The portion size was good and he was nice and full afterward - and at a great value - the food is cheaper than we expected! The service was unbeatable - for both meals we had Miguel and Librado, and as we left from lunch we got to meet Gaby as well. Happy, easy to talk to, making jokes and they will converse in English or Spanish perfectly well. They attended to our every need, and more. In fact, my boyfriend forgot his credit card at the table after breakfast, and Librado came and found us walking on the Malecon to give it back! That action speaks louder than any compliments we could give here. We have never been treated so well in a restaurant as we were at Gaby's. Can we give them 6 stars? read more

Food good, service very disappointing. Our server tried to upsell us on everything! Ordering the regular mojito wasn't good enough. You had to order the special mojito over double the price. Same with a margarita. He worked real hard to get us to order the special lobster and shrimp entree but wouldn't answer questions about the regular entrees on the menu. Took 20 minutes to get a drink, 20 more minutes for an app and another 30 minutes for entrees. It's so disappointing that service like this can ruin a good night out. read more

I came across Gaby's Restaurant during my stay in Puerto Vallarta. The restaurant itself was very inviting and aesthetically pleasing. Our server Hugo was very attentive and friendly. He recommended my group with dinner specials without being pushy and sold us on it. One of the specials required a chef to come out and prepare the meal right at our table which was exciting to see. I ordered the lobster enchiladas and by far was one of the best things I've had on this trip. The staff was on top of being attentive without being overbearing. Our concierge recommended we try Gabys for lunch. It's a short walk up the hill just a couple blocks from the church. Well worth the work! We started with the authentic, fresh-made guacamole - perfect with the cervezas and margaritas!! My wife had the chicken burrito and I had the shrimp tacos. Both were a delight - perfect temperature and flavor. It was hot outside, so we chose a table with air conditioning. Although close quarters, we struck up conversations with the other people in the room. The only hitch was that the credit-card machine was down. Hmm. Could it be that the owner doesn't like paying the cc service fee? Likely - but we had the cash, so it wasn't a big deal. So, bring some pesos, get a some margaritas and order the guacamole. The view on the balcony and patio areas are beautiful. The food is okay, nothing special. Too pricey for what you get. If you order a lunch or dinner "special" make sure to ask what it costs. I ordered a shrimp wrapped in bacon with a plantain puree appetizer, $28 USD (4 shrimp). Way too expensive! Not worth the money. Lots more places in PV with much better food and less $. read more

You need to attend one of Chef Julio's cooking classes. The class was very nice the recipes are easy to prepare. The class starts out on a walking tour in old downtown to several different markets to get fresh items to prepare that day. After cooking the meal it was a treat to sit and taste the food from the class. read more
