I live down the street from Gaetano's and it's been on my list for a while. I love authentic Italian food and this place definitely hit the mark. I'd recommend making reservation and be warned that there are not many tables that fit more than 4! We started with calamari and burrata. The calamari was really tasty, a different take on the classic with a thai sweet chili sauce. The burrata was amazing. It came with some toasted bread, arugula, and prosciutto parma. We all got a variety of cocktails &main entrees and were impressed by everything! Some of my favorites out of what we got were the sausage and peppers (with cavatelli pasta) and the clams aglio and olio. Our favorite cocktails were the Lucky Larcen and the Drive By. Gaetano's has an old school Italian vibe and it reminds me of a restaurant that my Italian grandparents would take me to, which I loved! It was great to be able to take my parents here when they were visiting from out of town. read more

I went here for the veal parm on my birthday. The mood is pretty solid and the atmosphere is quaint. The prices are mid pricey. It was disappointing!!! It was overcooked and you really couldn't taste what you were eating. And the spaghetti that came with it came out cold! Smh. Our waiter seemed to be ready to go home. A different waitress was real cool and told us to get the tiramisu (which was pretty good). The other cake dessert was good too. My friends got the sausage gnocchi which was really good and I wish I ordered that. read more

Had a reservation and after 20 minutes they still had not seated us. There was an empty table which had been empty for 20 minutes and I was told it was taken. Awful service!!!! read more

Been here twice now and wow what amazing experiences. The ambiance is on point and the food is even better. I would highly recommend making reservations! The chicken Marsala is the best I've ever had. My boyfriend and I loved the carbonara and crab cakes as well! Def try the mezcal pineapple egg white cocktail, it's fantastic. read more

Gaetano's turned out to be a decent carryout meal. I wish it would have been better since it is so close by. I ordered the stuffed manicotti. It was very cheesy and the vodka sauce wasn't bad. It just didn't really standout to me. My parents really enjoyed their meal that they ate on their outdoor patio. They also enjoyed getting the history of the restaurant and the building! So make sure to ask. read more

I don't right reviews often but I was there the other night and the food was amazing! What really stood out to me was the service. Andrew was my server and he was very accommodating. Has reservations and didn't have to wait at all. Our favorite booth was available! Waitress was efficient and had a sense of humor. In this day of poor service she was a delight. Making sure we were happy with everything! They were all decorated for Halloween which was fun! We've been going there for 20 plus years because the food is so authentic and delicious! My friend and I decided to come here on a busy Saturday night. When we called in, the staff warned us that the wait time would be almost an hour. We must have gotten lucky, because we were seated immediately when we got there! Our waitress was super nice and welcoming. We ordered a bunch of stuff! Cheese platter- my friend never had one before, so we decided to order one. I thought it was just an average cheese platter, but my friend really enjoyed it. Chicken Parmesan- such a huge portion, definitely enough to last you a second meal when you take home the leftovers. I thought it tasted pretty good. Mushroom ravioli: thank you yelpers for recommending this! Probably one of the best raviolis I've ever tasted! Very delicious and flavorful. Wish we could have tried their special which was squid ink pasta but it was sold out. I think the only item I didn't enjoy was the drinks, but aside from that this is a solid place to visit if you're craving Italian food. read more

Very disappointed with my recent dinner at Gaetano's. I ordered the same thing - salmon- that I've had several other times there. This time it was horrible!!! It looked like they took a chain saw to the salmon (it seems they were checking the doneness of the fish) - Presentation was bad. Also, the salmon was served room temp, the broccolini was literally cold and the risotto was barely a tablespoon portion. I had the same dish 6 weeks ago and it was great then. This past time it was lame. I even asked the server about the salmon and she offered no solution; she just looked at me blankly. This dish is $29 plus they charge a kitchen fee on top of that. I brought several people with me to the restaurant and I won't go back anytime soon. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Also, we had to sit on the patio. Maybe we were early but I'll preface there. They didn't have bread for us or offered us any and I heard them tell one table it wasn't ready until 5pm but I just heard and saw another table get their bread, it was strange. Also in our section everyone else was offered fresh pepper and cheese except for us, yes our entrees could have used both. We probably didn't look like their typical customers but believe me I noticed that right away. Then, when it came to our tab oddly enough we only got the receipt/check while other tables got a receipt sleeve along with their checks. Might seem silly as a reader but it definitely felt like unfair treatment. I found it odd and it sucks bc we really looked forward to trying this place out since we are always in the neighborhood! The happy hour items were tasty but the entree was just okay. We don't plan on returning because of the service we received. read more

Visiting for the weekend, we decided on Italian but didn't have a reservation so we arrived early and we are so glad we did. Walked in at 4:30 and were seated immediately and within 30 minutes the place was packed. If I could, I would have ordered one of all the salads, but went with the watermelon. It was out of this world. The bread with oil and balsamic vinegar was also very good. My partner's spaghetti and meatballs.was a huge plate of food. He enjoyed it but said he would order something different if we came back. He didn't care for the spice in the sauce. The gnocchi had a great flavor but was very mushy. I have never experienced that before. The staff was attentive and personable. We enjoyed our meal and felt like we had found the neighborhood spot that generations of residents have come to their whole lives. read more

I am frequently asked, "as a chef, where do you go when you want a good meal out?" Now I'll say Gaetano's is at the top of my list in Denver! I found what I consider to be the epitome of service and hospitality excellence, and the authentic, old-world style Italian food absolutely top notch! Great wine list and cocktails, followed by enough multiple course food selections to give you pause in choosing, but when you do, your plate will be cleaned. The service wasn't bad, we got our food pretty quickly but the food itself was pretty bland, we ordered calamari for our appetizer, it was cooked well but there was no seasoning and it came in a sweet & sour sauce which i found odd for an italian restaurant. We also ordered the bruchetta, and no one at our table liked it. we ended up leaving more than half of it on the plate. We got 3 main courses and none of us were impressed. Everything was under seasoned. We also ordered 2 deserts, the canoli and tiramisu. The tiramisu was good, but the conoli was ok. But now that i read about the restaurant, it turns out in 2005 the original owners sold it, so no wonder it's no longer authentic italian cuisine. I dont believe me or anyone in my party would be back. read more

Had a 6:30 pm reservation on a Thursday night and had to wait 15 minutes standing by the bar being jostled by customers and staff in an environment so noisy it made conversation almost impossible. The good food and wine didn't make up for the rough start. Service was "Meh". read more

I went to Gaetano's for a pre marathon meal with my girlfriends. I have celiac disease and I called ahead to put it on the reservation and double checked with the server to ensure that the gluten free pasta was boiled separately. The server ensured it was. I was eating my bolognese and almost done, when I noticed a regular noodle in my pasta. I stopped eating and called the server over who confirmed that was not a gluten free noodle. The manager was anything but helpful. She said she would comp my meal and then continually stated "I don't know what else I could do for you." She then offered to buy the party dessert, however they don't have any gluten free options. When I got the check I noticed my appetizer was still on the bill and had to ask that be comped as well since I was not able to enjoy any of the dessert they offered. All Allergies should be taken seriously as it can be very harmful and in some cases result in hospitalization or death. Won't be returning and anyone with any type of allergy should avoid coming here as this establishment is not safe. read more

I've always loved Gaetano's. It's a true throwback to the mafia history of Denver. The Smaldone family made this their home and not only broke bread with one another, but also made plans for their family enterprises. Gaetano's reminds you of a small New York Italian eatery. It's super friendly and very cozy. However, the booths are something special as is the bar. Food and vino...that's why we go to Italian joints. The wine list is top notch and the prices vary. I'm sure your server will help you find something perfect. For dinner I suggest either the lasagna (I'm a sucker for lasagna, and Gaetano's does it right) or the GNOCCHI SALSICIA & FUNGHI. Holy mackerel! It's a wonderful combination of handmade gnocchi along with sausage and mushrooms in a white wine tomato cream sauce. Mangia! For dessert don't forget the Tiramisu. read more

If you're looking for some good Italian food you've got to check this place out! They serve a lot of classics done well. They have a bar, some booths and plenty of tables. I got there at 6:30 and it was busy, but I didn't have to wait. They have a decent side parking lot with plenty of street parking too. Buratta: Super delicious with the balsamic drizzle. The bread was perfect and you can make your own prosciutto, buratta, arugula toast. Veal Parm: Crispy and delicious! Super cheesy and saucy too. There was enough for a leftover meal too. This is an off the beaten path highlands gem. Found this place on Yelp when looking for a dinner spot last minute. We found a dinner reservation at 8:45 but decided to take our chances at a bar seat sooner. The food was incredible. This is coming from a person that thinks all denver has to offer is mediocre rotisserie chicken and burgers lol. The mussels were *chefs kiss*. The drinks were *chefs kiss* and the entrees were even better. I was stuffed like a thanksgiving turkey but after seeing all the tiramisu being served around us, we couldn't pass. No joke, the best tiramisu I've ever had. Don't pass this place up. Highly recommend. read more

Great salted caramel gelato, entertaining and comfortable atmosphere. They really lean into the "mob" theme with their decor. The food though.... not that impressive. Because of gelato being really good and the experience being otherwise pleasant, it was tempting to give the place a 4, but the food was really just "ok." Not bad, just a little underwhelming and pricy. It seemed like people were enjoying the cocktails. My friends enjoyed the chicken alfredo, were disappointed with the spaghetti and meatballs, and the marsala was fine but could've been better. Didn't love the cannolis. All in all, I don't think it's a "must-try" place but if the theme and history intrigues you, it may still be worth a trip - just make sure to keep your expectations within reason. read more

I honestly don't even know how to start this review. The second we walked in the door the hostesses were disrespectful to us after we checked in for our reservation. One hostess walked us to a table right by the door (I am getting over a cold so I asked to be seated farther away from the door since it is only 20° outside), she then proceeded to walk my guest and I back to the hostess booth and told me she might not even be able to accommodate my party due to my request. (Mind you that there were at least TEN open/empty tables within PLAIN visible sight.) She then sat us at a different table that was still right next to the door. After sitting at the table for 15 minutes, a waiter named Nick (who was wonderful) stoped by and asked if we had been greeted yet and if he could get drinks started for us- which we hadn't, so he did. He was great, but the entire dinner was disrupted by the hostesses at the booth turning away people coming in without reservations (still with multiple empty tables in clear-view) and chugging some drink out of soda cups that they would make grimacing faces after drinking (alcohol would by my assumption). On multiple occasions, the waiter had to go out of his way to stop by the hostess booth to remind the two girls to keep their volume down, as both of them had been complaining about their jobs and how long they have been there that day. Needless to say, that isn't what we wanted to hear about (or them complaining about how the restaurant was such a disaster all day) on our date night. Long story short- the food was decent, but it was NOT worth the experience. It was an overall poor environment from the rude/loud hostesses, down to the confusion of whose tables were whose. Not sure if we will be coming back to try this place again, as I would like to enjoy my dinner in an appropriate dining atmosphere. read more

We came here with Hubby's niece and her boyfriend. I made a reservation with Kristina, a lovely hostess. She gave me the outside seating area since I booked for a specific time. The restaurant is near our hotel and located at an intersection. It's quite a hidden gem, but you won't miss it, looking good from the outside. It's a remarkably well-maintained restaurant. John, our waiter, speaks Italian. Watch out! Don't say anything in Italian unless you know what it means! So, we ordered calamari and margarita pizza to start. So ok, don't order pizza outside New York, nothing to do with the restaurant. I think it's the water. Yeah, the water did it. New York water is good for bagels and pizzas. According to me! So the pizza wasn't bad but I live in NY and the best pizza is in NY. All of us liked the calamari! Crispy with a flavorful sauce on the side. Then I ordered Pescatore pasta. My dish was extremely delicious! I could eat this all-day! Hubby ordered veal parmesan but my dish was so much better he said. I agreed because I tried the parmesan sauce and it was ok. My dish was not so much in red sauce but a combination garlic and oil type of sauce but so delicious! The niece had ravioli and her boyfriend had bolognese. Of all the dishes we ordered, mine was the fancier one and I bet mine was the best dish! Haha! I could talk about this all day! We enjoyed this place. Although we had outside seating, it's really not an open space, so it's better. It's separated from inside dining but around us there's a fence that separated us and path walk and they planted some plants around the fence, so it looks like we're in a village in Italy. Awesome! History

Established in 1947.

Gaetano's Restaurant - at the corner of 38th & Tejon streets in northwest Denver - has a history that stretches back into the"wild west" and prohibition days. Originally dubbed the Tejon Street Café a few blocks away, it was started by Ralph and Mamie Smaldone in 1934. A few years later, the Smaldone's renamed it after their oldest son, Clyde, Gaetano in Italian and moved to the present day location. The "North Side" of Denver had long been home to a concentration of Italian immigrants, including the Smaldones. The family played a hefty role in shaping Denver's Italian history, though most of it involved gambling, bookmaking and other criminal activities. Those activities frequently landed brothers Clyde, Eugene and Clarence in the local press, which tagged them with colorful nicknames. The Wynkoop Group of Restaurants purchased Gaetano's from the Smaldone family in 2005. The latest remodel is a tribute to all of North Denver and those who built the business and community. Cheers!

The first thing that captures your attention is the room. A stunning wall of spirits rises behind the bar and seamlessly blends into the open kitchen, creating one continuous stage. Watching the team work is mesmerizing. Tiny containers of herbs, sauces, oils, citrus, garnishes, and countless other components come together with quiet precision. It reminds me of watching a great sushi counter. Alone, they're just ingredients. Together, they become something far greater than the sum of their parts. The hospitality begins the moment you walk in. Dominique, the general manager, welcomed me back, remembered me from previous visits, and made me feel genuinely happy that I had returned. That's increasingly rare. I always sit at the bar because that's where a restaurant makes me feel comfortable. When I first sat down, the bartender was busy and focused. Over the course of the evening, cocktails became conversations. We talked about flavors, restaurants, and what makes a memorable dining experience. By the end of the night he slid over a bartender's choice, a Corn Sour, not because I ordered it, but because he thought I'd enjoy it. He was right. Chef Curiel and his team have created restaurants with different personalities but the same DNA: creativity, precision, warmth, and genuine hospitality. I pulled up Cask and Craft's website and was super happy to see the list of precautions they are taking to keep their customers safe. Some of these precautions include only 2 people in the shop at a time, use provided hand sanitizer when you enter, and even curbside pick up/delivery. Since I was sitting in front of the store, I figured I'd just go in, get what I needed, and quickly head home. I was greeted and asked to use the hand sanitizer upon entering - yes, thank you. I then explained from a distance that I was looking for a dark beer, preferably a stout. I was escorted to the back of the store and shown the fridge with all the dark beer. WOW! big selection. I had the choice of 6 packs, 4 packs, or mix and match. This was perfect for me because I needed 5 beers. I ended up selecting Jackie O's Java the Stout. When I brought up my 5 pack, the owner told me it was a great beer (one of his favorite dark beers) and that it was a solid choice. He was not wrong. This beer is awesome, and paired so well with my peanut butter cookie pairing. So good. I will definitely be back to Cask and Craft. Their shop is filled with all different types of wine, liquor, and beer. It's organized so nicely, and the shop itself has this comforting vibe when you walk in. I'm so appreciative of everything they are doing to keep customers safe and for the recommendations they give.

So it's not like we did something to piss her off. When she arrived at the POS station - behind the bar about six feet from where we were sitting - she proceeded to complain about the "a-holes" (edited for language) using the Passbook and what a bunch of a-holes those customers were (not knowing we were in earshot). And when the bartender - who knew who we were and that we could hear everything - said in a hushed tone "No, they were nice" she proceeded to tell him that she didn't care and that they're just a-holes. I've never been treated so shoddy in my life in a restaurant for no other reason than using a promotional discount that they voluntarily participated in. It's bad enough to attack your customers for using a discount. But doing it behind the bar where customers can hear you is beyond unacceptable. And doing it when the customers you're talking about are within earshot is the most offensive thing I've ever expereinced at a restaurant. You may go to Steuben's and have a nice meal, but just be aware that behind the bar, they're talking about what an a-hole you are.

The drinks are the best I've had at DIA, and the brussel sprouts were great! I appreciated that they let me sit for so long and then when my friends eventually landed they easily transitioned me to the lounge area so we could all grab a drink. So glad this place has bounced back!! My concourse C respite!
