I like this place. I wouldn't go here as a night out, but at the right times, it's a chill hang. The atmosphere varies wildly depending on the day. On some nights it's louder and is in line with what you'd expect a university bar to be like, and sometimes it's very relaxed, and you can even find some people using it as a study spot (not something I would consider or really recommend, but you do you as long as it's not busy and no one needs the table). Sometimes it's somewhere in between or a weird mix of both. It's not always predictable, but I've found that to hit the quieter days that I prefer, early evening during exam season at school is best, and summer in general are chiller than the main academic year. The food is good, often surprisingly good. The menu items are well thought-out and tasty, and nicely presented. It's not a veg-centric establishment but there's lots of choice for vegans! Off the current menu, I've had the Power Punch Salad, the Vegan Pulled Jackfruit, the Vegan Burger, Vegan Chick'n Caesar Wrap, and the Tempeh Teriyaki. I wasn't particularly impressed by the Caesar wrap - it wasn't awful, I just didn't feel like it was worth $19.5, but everything else was a delight. I'm glad their vegan burger is a (seemingly) housemade, minimally processed black bean patty instead of beyond meat or similar! I usually won't order a salad as my meal, but the Power Punch is substantial! The side salad that comes with the sandwich orders is actually pretty nice too. They make good cocktails and have a long list of local draft beers on tap which I haven't really had a chance to dip into, but I got the "Green Bird" for fun on St. Patrick's Day, which is just a version of their house "T-Bird" lager that's been coloured green (maybe naturally, judging by the grassy notes I got from it, but I don't know for sure). It was actually a good lager though! Sometimes the staff is nice enough, sometimes I get the vibe that they're too cool to be serving me or something, but because the only interactions you have with them are when you order and pay at the bar and when they bring your food out, an unenthusiastic bartender doesn't ruin the whole experience. Because of this service style, you can expect to be in and out of here faster than you would at a full table service restaurant, but it's not fast food, so dishes still take as much time to prep as they would at a "regular" sit-down place. It's also pricier than typical counter service food, but very reasonably priced compared to off-campus restaurants that serve food of this quality, and there's no obligation to tip 20%. To me, the service model, fair prices, and high quality are a combination of the best elements of counter service and full service. read more

Located on the top floor of the nest, the Gallery is a restaurant/bar in one of the most convenient locations on campus. The entire restaurant is nicely decorated, with comfortable furniture and a nice causal atmosphere. Great for chatting, but maybe a bit loud for studying or doing anything productive. My friend and I came here during happy hour, where they have 5 dollar dip platters and select drinks on discount. My mojito was pretty good, and the various dips were surprisingly delicious. The service is pretty nonexistent, you basically seat yourself, you pay for your drinks at the counter and then go and pick them up yourselves once it's ready. Overall this is probably the best place to relax after classes, and the patio is a great place to grab some drinks and forget about the stress of upcoming midterms and exams. read more

One of my favourite restaurants/ places to eat on UBC campus. The gallery 2.0 serves a variety of snacks, meals at an affordable price. Usually busy around meal times but doesn't get too full. We ordered the shepherds pie and fried chicken burger and I have to say the gallery Po'boy was amazing. Probably one of the best fried chicken I've ever had. The food portion is generous for the price compared to point grill. Service was good although food came a bit slow (15-20 mins). Gets a bit dark at night - really only candles and dim light in the restaurant. Will definitely come back to try other items on the menu! read more

Updated Review: Came back again while visiting UBC campus for work. Thankfully, this was during the lunch hour so I didn't have the same trouble as last time (not being able to order food). If you have the time the lounge atmosphere is great and beats waiting in line for any of the food on campus. It's also much nicer to bring people here to the Nest compared to the old SUB (Student Union Building). Menu has a good selection of drinks and food. I got the BC Burger and fries which were actually pretty good. Lunch selection is around $12 bucks. Overall, Gallery 2.0 is potentially a good place to go, when they are open and available. Good atmosphere with a self-serve system can make it a good option on campus. If they can improve their ordering system and improve speed time, this place could be one of the best on campus. read more

As a student its super convenient. I'd recommend the gallery as a catch location when you haven't seen your friend in forever, group hangout or even a date. The decor is cute, you feel classy but also don't feel the need to impress. It definitely isn't the most affordable place on campus, but the location is very centralized. The fries were sweet and salty and the view was gorgeous. What can I say other than I'd go back during happy hour, but probably not anytime soon otherwise. Being a UBC Alumni with the old Student Union Building, this new UBE Nest is the ultimate upgrade. And with an eatery at the top 4th floor with an outdoor patio is a cherry on top! The interior of Gallery 2.0 is saturated with natural light and a beautiful range of seating from booths, common tables, couch seating and an outdoor patio. The menu had a range of pub like food and lots of drink options. My boyfriend and I just wanted a snack, so we decided on the All-day Breakfast Sandwich ($3.95) with a side of fries ($2). We chose our spot with our number in hand and we grabbed a pot of ice water for our table too. The major downside, as stated in other reviews as well, was the wait. It was a Monday early evening but it took 25 minutes to get our 2 breakfast sandwiches and fries! What is even more disappointing was that the food wasn't even hot. Regardless, everything tasted good. The breakfast sandwich had a crispy english muffin and real cheddar cheese and a decent slice of ham. The fries were typical but good too. Overall, very very nice atmosphere but the wait time was a killer for the mood, especially if you're hungry. read more

The food was AMAZING! I had the chicken po' boy with their classic fries and it was JUST SO GOOD. The servers were pleasant but it took quite some time to get the meal. It's all done to order they say, however it seems they need more help in the kitchen and they need more servers. Thought it was just that day, but nope it's pretty much all the time. One of my colleagues had to go to the window by the kitchen to get her food (it was sitting there for a while but there was only ONE SERVER working that day so he was taking forever). Usually I'm a stickler for service but the food was so good I just couldn't take away any more stars. read more

First of all, I'm gonna have to get out of the way, the fact that this is not the same as the original Gallery. Different interior and menu, and with that comes a complete change of environment and atmosphere. The original Gallery was comfortable for me personally in that it was a dingy, and cheap spot on campus in a sea of expensive terrible food. I would say the general loss of that is a negative. As for the positives; the food is really good, and actually isn't that pricy - although with no cheap food options on campus anymore... Right, positives! I'm not the kind of person who gets hung up on having no table service, as it means the tip can normally come down. However they bring the food to the table and serve alcohol, so there should be somewhat of an obligation to leave an okay tip. Service is mostly good - which is a pretty great thing among a sea of terrible service everywhere else on Campus (excluding a few of the other newer places/Loafe, Mercante, etc.) of course take that with a grain of salt, they have some inexperienced staff who give me the vibe of being a step up from fast food workers. There's a male server/bartender from Australia I believe, who's there every day and is quite good. The seating is nice, but the bar area is very weird, and feels like an airport lounge. The elevated seating area is REALLY nice. Unfortunately I think the restaurant that preceded them missed the mark; either that or they put non-foodie UBC board members in charge of choosing the design of the venue. It screams of something they would make a late 50s/early 60s white male who flies first class would want. As for everyone else... The atmosphere is the weirdest part. The food is solid, service is good, acceptable price for quality, comfy seats, weird vibe... The only real negative servicewise is that sometimes the food comes out slow. This is not fast food, so make sure you leave some time to get to class. I give it a 3/5, and hope to see it do well; maybe bring back the killer breakfast menu at the original Gallery. read more

A really nice hang out spot for people at UBC! Their food is pretty solid, I've tried their chicken po'boy sandwich which has a thick piece of chicken that's always hot and juicy coming from the kitchen and served with a generous serving of fries. Their fish and chips are also pretty good and reasonably priced as well. The drinks are also pretty good considering the same drink at cactus club would be at least double ($6 vs $12). The best thing is that it's just an awesome atmosphere with things going on like performances in the background. Overall a great place to get drinks and decently priced food! read more

In the summer the rooftop patio is a great spot for a beer, but it's probably best to skip the food. The last time I was in I ordered their chip and dip platter to share with 2 friends and the oil in the chips was clearly rancid - they were inedible. We told the waitress who checked with the kitchen who said they would not replace the chips because the expiration date on the bag had not passed... then she offered us more dip to compensate. What on earth were we going to do with the dip when we had nothing to dip in it? A little haggling and she brought us 5 pieces of celery instead. I wonder how many more people were sold rancid chips before they finally opened a new bag.... read more

The patio is probably my favorite place to grab a beer.....when it is possible. The publicised closing time for the establishment is 10PM. However they routinely close the kitchen around 7PM, 3 whole hours before it is supposed to close. Furthermore the last time I went to the gallery (yesterday) they did last call for drinks at 8PM. What is the point of publicising your opening hours till 10PM when this is just a lie? read more

I'd give this zero if I could. Horrible food, service is okay but the food is just terrible. Like so bad. Avoid the salmon, avoid it all if you can. Like honestly, how could they do this to me? Have I not suffered enough? I came here to drown my sorrows and all I got out of it was more sorrows and a terrible salmon burger with a side of pain in my stomach.
