Northerners pay attention... The pizza here is as good as it gets in Richmond. One bite and I was transported back to Brooklyn and the endless string of afternoon visits to my neighborhood pizza place. The pie was hot, cheesy, oily, and the crust, oh that crust! The pizza at Galley-To-Go is a trip back in time. Speaking of time, you will spend some here if you are planning to enjoy a pizza. Average waits for a pizza are at a half hour, but on a weekend evening, you can easily wait double that time. I don't mind waiting for good food, but I think the staff needs to be educated in being able to remind or even warn potential guests (especially first-timers) that their early night may become compromised, or if you have small children, you may do better in their regular "Galley" restaurant just a door away. The back-story behind how this transformed Asian restaurant became an RVA pizza mecca is intriguing and quite involved, but the short version is a New Jersey native who worked for the owners of the Galley named Guistino Riccio brought his family recipes to the Galley's managers, and they were immediately sold. When they transformed the former Mandarin Palace restaurant (the name still sits above the restaurant's doorway, as do other relics that remind you of the space's previous tenants), they put pizza ovens in the kitchen and a neon sign offering "Guistino's Pizza" over the kitchen entrance. Local legend says the owners are still arguing over the name of the "Galley to Go" space (part coffee shop, part grocery store, part cafe), but who cares if the pizza is this good. Well, you might if you want to get in and get out in a hurry (so order ahead, many do), OR if you want to adjust your pizza toppings. No substitutions for the varieties of pizza are permitted (a little concerning if your allergy requires a vegan pizza, which they offer but no protein is on it). So if you are willing to live with the potentially long waits, the small pizza oven capacities (we were told a 20-pie limit at any given time, so if there is a big to-go order, well, just enjoy your beverage SLOWLY while you wait), and the rigidity of the pizza menu (there are other menu items besides pizza but they are not the main draw here...) the Galley to Go may be your RVA pizza destination for a long time to come. I had the second half my pie the next day reheated, and it was just as good as my first bite, a sign that whatever they do in that kitchen, although a labor of love and long waits, is worth its weight in gold. read more

I first tried to go to Galley Kitchen which does not serve the pizza. You have to walk over to the market just next door. It's like a market with seating and pizza. They also serve coffee and beer. Once I got to the right shop I ordered 2 GIUSTINO'S PIZZA's to go. They are about 12 inches. I was only feeding two adults so we probably could have just shared one. I came on a Thursday night and they said I would be 20min. But it was more like 10. I got the sausage and Fennel which is their House Mozzarella, Parmesan, Fresh Cracked Black Pepper all for $10.95. Boyfriend got the Sweet Hot which is Tomato Sauce, Pepperoni, House Mozzarella, Parmesan, Honey, Roasted Calabrian Peppers, Chili Oil and costs $11.95. So a pretty good value! We also tried some prepared meals to go like their chicken salad that was $5 for 11oz and their clam chowder. Both good. They also sell nightingale ice cream! read more

Here are a few things that make this spot great. 1. The dine-in menu is good and the specials are good too. Our favorite was the Southside Omelet because the ham looked to be real slices of VA ham and not packaged meat. 2. The coffee is good; they said it is a special blend of Blanchard's Coffee for this location. I always like supporting local coffee over Starbucks. 3. The pizza. My family orders the pizza from here and it is always good. 4. The market. You may find items here that you can't find in the grocery store. Some are speciality and some promote healthy eating. Lastly, don't let the exterior discourage you. Relics from the previous establishment may be confusing but it a Kitsch aesthetic that brings in a little history and quirkiness to what would otherwise be a straight forward diner. Opted for the "faster" option of the two galley dining establishments, and in hindsight, I should have selected the galley, and not the go to / to go establishment. My order was simple, as were those of the rest of my group, and it took 30 minutes to receive my food. I'm not sure if the employee was being serious when she said that it was just her working that day, but if you have one employee taking orders and preparing too, you might as well shut down for the day. read more

We've only ever been here on a Friday night after enjoying a free wine tasting next door (Once Upon a Vine), and can attest that, while you're guaranteed to wait at least thirty minutes before your pizza is ready, it's worth the wait. What looks like a Chinese restaurant at first glance from the outside, Galley Go-To is actually a pizza restaurant that doubles as a small specialty grocer. Our main interest is their pizza, though, because we've yet to have a pie that hasn't astounded our taste buds.* *Did you know for the majority of his life, Alex used to call taste buds "taste bugs"? Upon our most recent visit, Sarah opted for a Grandma Style Pepperoni Square Slice. We first tried a complimentary cheese slice of this thick crust on our first visit as a means of making up for the long wait. A frustrating, but delicious outcome! The edges are crunchy while the inner crust is chewy, and their thick sliced pepperoni is slightly spicy and DIVINE. We highly recommend it on any of their pizzas. I, on the other hand, tried one of their specials again: Some Like It Cheesy & Hot. The crust was thin and airy, crispy, and packing a flavor that would rival most sourdoughs. The combination of Parmesan, mozzarella, and brie combined with the spicy Calabrian (a southwest region in Italy) salami and fig jam to create a mildy spicy sweet savory master piece. It was hard not to overeat, it was that good! Let's also talk about the portions, here, too. Their whole pies are a one-size-fits-all personal pan that would equate to a medium at most other restaurants. I usually love this establishment. We love the food, we love to support our neighborhood restaurants, but today we were treated like scum. I had a hand shoved in my face and said "you can leave, bye". I have never been treated so rudely in life. We ordered Galley to Go on a whim as we wanted to support a local restaurant. They are located in the Stratford Hills shopping center and the to-go spot is located right next to the restaurant (with its own separate entrance). My friends and I ordered a couple of pizzas and the pasta carbonara. The pizzas were delicious with a nice crispy crust which I love. The pasta carbonara was yummy but it was a little on the oily side which you would expect on a pizzas. All-in-all, it was super yummy and we'll be back again! read more

This is one of only two places that my wife will eat pizza from. I've brought chef's here, that were used to spending five times as much on food and they were blown away by the quality and freshness of the dishes. Perfect pizza, large and great sandwiches, unique salads. Amazing drink selections, both with and without alcohol. Full espresso bar, nice equipment, and trained staff. Great place to bring kids, or bring food home for the kids. Loads of parking, friendly staff, easy. Since this is not really a sit-down restaurant, I didn't have high hopes for tableservice... But it was OK. Open cafe style, you can basically sit outside, and still be out of the weather. Try the margherita pizza. read more

Obsessed with the egg salad here with pork clouds for keto goodness. The egg salad is chunky, creamy and has just the right amount of mayo with dill. I'll often swing by to grab something for myself and my husband if I'm not up to cooking. I appreciate the grab go selections more than eating in the actual restaurant. Hubs enjoyed the beautiful pieces of salmon and some of the super tasty soups. read more

Wow, talk about a hidden gem! I have been living in the Forest Hill area and I finally went here! I got their pizza and I've got to say, this is the best pizza in the area. I think the shop itself has a trove of items that are fun to look through too! I used to order from chain pizza groups because I didn't think there was very much in the area, but I have been converted! read more

Currently the best pizza in Richmond. Giustino killed it with his dough recipe. Always good, a little difficult to get to from city though.

The Fig pizza is AMAZING. Absolutely my favorite pizza in south side. Called ahead and picked it up to go, along with ice cream sandwiches they sell in their freezers. A must try for those of you in Richmond south of the James. read more

So good and a cool, laid back atmosphere. Normal to have to wait 30 minutes for the pizza as they stay very busy and have to go orders. We don't mind as the atmosphere is good and wine is cheap. This place was fantastic. The four of us each got a different pizza, knowing that there would be leftovers (yay). We tasted a the Roasted Grape and Gorgonzola; the Margherita; the Sweet Hot; and the Fig, Brie, and Calabrian salami. All four pizzas were outstanding. We were each raving over ours and arguing about whose was best. Mind you, we just returned from a trip to Tuscany, so we've inadvertently become slight pizza snobs because Italian pizza is to die for. The Galley's pizza is the real deal. I've now been to Galley to go/Giustino's twice and will continue to recommend and seek out their pizza. I had to leave them a review after last night when my husband and I arrived right after 9 hoping to be seated and eat. I had mistakenly read their hours online as closing at 11 (THIS IS FOR THE GALLEY LOCATION--not galley to go) and we were so disappointed when the waitress told us they had closed at 9. I should mention that I am 9 months pregnant. As we stood there debating our next move, a second waitress came up and said, "you know I could probably get them to do a to go order, do you guys know what you want?" Sold. We walked out about 30 minutes later with the Sweet Hot and one of their specials, the Popeye. If you ask me, the Sweet Hot is where it's at (that numbing burn and the underlying honey flavor--yum!) but the Popeye was also good and I have previously had the sausage and fennel which was also very good. We are so appreciative of their staff who went the extra mile for us in our time of "need". :) read more

I visited Galley Go To with a few of my old roommates to catch up on life's goings on. It was Saturday night and the place was packed (not surprising). I did enjoy that it has a little bit of a "corner store" vibe in that they also sell snacks and pre-made goods in the restaurant. From the looks of the menu, their specialty is pizza, so we figured we'd give it a go. We ordered a caesar salad to start, and were a little confused by its presentation. Despite our slight difficulty to figure out how to eat it without making a mess (it was served as two large lettuce wedges- similar to a regular wedge but with a little more difficulty in cutting it up- could also have something to do with the size of the plate it was served on. Too small?) the salad was tasty. The pizza was OK- I ordered the Margherita. The portion sizes are definitely big enough to share between two to three people. I would like to try Galley Kitchen (right next door) to see what it's all about. Overall, it was an alright visit. I would share a pizza with someone next time to save some money. read more

Went to the restaurant and ordered to go on 10/17/2021. The young guy that took my order was very nice and pleasant. I ordered 2 pizzas 1 Margerita and 1 Fennel Sausage. when I got my pizza they were incorrect. I got a Mariana pizza instead of a margerita pizza and the fennel sausage pizza had more fennel than sausage and it was really burnt. When I tried to call the store about my order it was no answer and both numbers kept going to voicemail. When I finally did speak with someone on Monday I was told a manager will call me NEVER GOT A CALL THAT DAY. I had to call again on Tuesday and was told again that a manger would all and the lady was very rude with me. Finally got a call today from the manager CHRIS and he was 4 times as rude as his staff. He told me I could never come to the restaurant again because I "harassed" his staff how I don't know. He told me he had to check with the staff about my order then he agreed to give me cash back. I have never been treated so bad in my life. I will never visit again. read more
