I had a really frustrating experience at this GameStop location and I wouldn't recommend wasting your time here. I drove an hour specifically to buy Yu-Gi-Oh cards that I saw available in-store. When I got there, the cards were clearly sitting on the shelf. I asked an employee to grab them for me, and he said "sure thing," took a look, and then disappeared into the back. After waiting about 10 minutes, he came back and told me he couldn't sell them to me because someone had already ordered them online. That makes no sense. If they were already sold, why were they still sitting on the shelf where customers can see them? And if that's the case, why couldn't I place the same order myself? When I asked these questions, the employee completely avoided answering and just brushed me off. It came across as very unprofessional and dismissive. To make things worse, when I asked to speak with a supervisor, the employee flat out said no. He claimed his supervisor wasn't there that day, and when I asked for a name, he said "Ron," but didn't seem honest or willing to provide any real help or accountability. Driving that far just to be turned away like that is unacceptable. Poor communication, poor inventory management, and even worse customer service. Save yourself the time, gas, and frustration--go somewhere else. read more

I recently purchased a PS5 Pro here and was subjected to some very misleading sales tactics. The staff added a 'Pro' membership to my transaction without asking for my consent. When I questioned it, they claimed it was 'free' because the discount on the purchase covered the cost. ​When I specifically asked if the membership would auto-renew, the sales rep told me 'no' because they didn't have my card on file. This was false. After checking my account at home, auto-renew was indeed toggled ON. ​If you shop here, double-check your receipt and your account settings immediately. I bought a Miraculous Paris under siege on 12/24/2015 for my daughter for Christmas. We never got the chance to play it because we are busy during the holidays. And we also left the game at her grandpas house because that's where we celebrated Xmas. 2 weeks go by and we finally get a chance to play it. I put the game in, and the disc is unreadable. My daughter is disappointed and sad. So I ended up just buying it off the PlayStation store for half the price at $15. A few days pass and I finally get a chance to return my physical copy. And they said I can't return it. Even though they sold me a defective video game. And I was like what?!?!? "I thought it was a month for me to return it" turns out it's only a week now, and they extended it to January 12th or something for the holidays. So I missed the return date by about 2 days. And she says "I can check to see how much I can give u for store credit" and I'm like "U can't return the defective game u guys sold me but u can take it as a trade in for $7?!?" I bought the game for $30. So I told them to keep the game because i don't shop at GameStop anymore, and this definitely will keep me from ever walking into their stores again or supporting them ever in the future. I almost never post 1 star reviews but I felt compelled to share one of the worst service experiences I ever had as a consumer and certainly the worst service at Hillsdale Mall. On 1/24 around 4-5p, we went to GS in Hillsdale mall to buy a transformers toy for my 4 year old. I noticed this promotion tag buy one toy and second toy is 50% off on the shelf above the transformers toys. It would turn out later that I initially missed the fine print noting this applied to pro members but when I asked the associate behind the counter, he told me this promotion applied to all toys in the store without a membership which is why I bought 2 instead of one transformer toy (Optimus Prime Studio Version + Legacy evolution Galvatron Armada) for both my kids. When I went to check out, a second associate (name: Ron) not only told me that there was no promotion for the second toy but that buying a pro membership would cost me more money not less due to the two toys not having promotion applied. I politely refused the membership and reminded him I would only be interested if there was a promotion but he insisted on telling me about benefits of pro membership I would not use without listening or giving me a chance to talk. When I finally insisted that I did not want the membership if it would not result in a promotion and asked why I was told the promotion applied to the toys we chose, his tone overtly aggressive and told me "hey buddy you're talking to the wrong guy here, I really don't care". Then when my credit card did not work with the scanner he asked me if I had another card, I said no and asked to use the scanner in the next register and he refused to even try it saying "all our scanners will not work with your card". I then used cash and he actually gave me the wrong change and REFUSED to give me a receipt citing "we are all out of receipt paper". When I asked what if I have to return the toy he said "all sales are final once you open the box". Finally one of Ron's associates took me to the next register and printed out several receipts (on receipt paper) for me and I left w my kids bewildered. To my fellow shoppers highly recommend avoiding this location and buying online or going to another store until Gamestop fixes the service and communication or retrain their associates at this location starting with Ron. read more

The customer service is awful, and this happen earlier today. I was 2nd in line with my auntie, and we were behind with two Hispanics wearing some cowboy hats. One of the workers was free, and we went to him for question and to scan our items. He said he wasn't available, but he decided to help out a goth girl cutting us. He continued to leave us hanging, looked through his phone and ignore us. We were still in line behind the other two Hispanics. The reason they were holding up in line due to the fact that the two employees were pressuring them to purchase and to sign for their subscription stating, "They never shop in any gamestops". It didn't help the fact the Hispanics men had a language barrier with them. The workers convinced them for an unnecessary subscription and another game which they didn't have the disk for (specifically it was one of the recent COD) One of the workers who pressured the men, he was taking our items. He was trying to do the same trick to us as he did with the men. I didn't budge to his ideas and the warrants since I'm getting xbox 360 games (xbox stopped making 360 disks in 2023 winter). He was saying gamestop the only source for these old games, but that's a lie due to my experience in other stores. I even was vocal with the man stating, "lack of customer service" and his ideas. I've been on a hunt all night for an xbox 360 controller, i go to this one and they say they have one in stock. i'm dead ass jumping for joy and the white devil doesn't even glance at his computer to see if it's in stock (after the very nice lady worker checked and said it was) and then asked a random coworker if they had it in stock, he says no, he looks at me and shrugs, i continue and repeat that a previous coworker (same night, five minutes earlier) said they did, and he says that they lost it. i'll let you decide read more

I came in to pick up a game for my son and I asked the employee Amanda for assistance, the short blonde girl with glasses. the moment she looked at me she rolled her eyes and went on her phone telling me that she is busy. Completely ignoring me, very rude. So i went to the shelf and found the game myself and brought it to the counter, she looked up for like a second and said "We don't have it". She Didn't even tried to check, she just brushed me aside. I asked her if she could please look it up in the system or at least check the drawer for it. She then told me "I know a-lot more than you do buddy. Buy something or get out" I left the store completely frustrated. She needs to be fired immediately, her customer service is completely awful. Atrocious customer service from genuinely lazy employees who don't want to "work". I come in occasionally to look for past gen. console games (PS3, Xbox30, Wii). I'll either get an employee who says no we don't sell those games (absolute F'ing LIE!!) or one who will tell me they are on the phone with a customer and can't help me. Another lie because not once was the phone picked up or a BT headset turned on to take a call. A bunch of Ms. Fields cookies were being slammed down that employees gullet though... One time, and one time only did I get an employee willing to open up the back drawers so that I could take a peak at the Wii & 360 games. Thats how they've earned the 2 star rating. Some of them want to work or actually make a sale. GameStop consistently excels at one thing though, me walking out without a single dollar spent because their employees make it THAT hard to complete a transaction. Do not grade your cards here. I sent in 4 cards. 2 N's zoroark ex, a wailord, an a chien pao ex. The guy seemed trusting as we had a fun conversation but I realized after he was taking a little while, that he was up to something.. I didn't think twice because he was nice. He just kept talking about being a hustler and how much he loves gold. Strange cat. When I got my cards back and looked on the GameStop app, my card was switched with a $2 card. Some card I've never even seen before. They said it's my fault for not taking a picture of it but I've never graded and that was my first time. I figured I could trust the guy because I've never had issues with people in the Pokemon community...I was told by the owner that he would help me figure it out and not to worry. That when the cards come in we will see the pictures taken. And when he showed me the pictures. That random cheap card was in the photo. The guy swapped my card. Apparently That guy was actually fired for doing "shady" stuff at the store. The owner went on to say how shady he was and what he was doing. I have a feeling this isn't the first time they have swapped cards out. I've been told that they sell PSA cards to another store in the mall for cheap. It all added up. I was upset that they couldn't or wouldn't do anything after I even took notes of the names of the guy who took my cards to send for grading, the owner who said he would help and the entire conversation we had over the phone. All he would say is "it's your fault for not taking pictures", so clearly I called him an ahole. well I figured people in the Pokemon community were just good people but I see how crooked some of these people are. Backdooring and selling cards that are most likely cards that people turned in and gas light the customer saying it's their fault. Not all the staff is bad but they sure didn't want to help me. I was very angry to say the least and told the owner he needed to fix it like he said. He told me "you have no picture sorry it's your fault you can take the cards and leave or I'll take the cards back". Trying to stand up for myself apparently doesn't make scammers happy as he almost cried in angry and refused to help at that point. It also took 2 months for them just to send my card out in the first place. I heard they actually get some psa cards and back door them as well, from a reliable source. Makes sense as to why some graded cards end up missing. Long story short. These are the people who ruin the hobby, basically take advantage of people and do nothing about it read more

This Gamestop has the best layout of any that I've been to. I usually find that in other Gamestops displays are kind of haphazardly plopped around the store which makes for a confusing experience. This one was large and separated by offerings. The first part was segmented by major console and exhibited a lot of games. They smartly had a colorful shelving with lots of stuffed toys that you could see from outside of thestore which were sure to draw people inside out of sheer visual excitement. I beelined for the store when I saw that giant plush Kirby and I'm still thinking about it. The checkout is in the middle of the store which means the employees can kind of see everyone in the store. This is relevant because I was kind of shocked when an employee behind the counter asked if I needed help! I never get service at a Gamestop. The back walls are more of your "accessories" to gaming, so there's a wall with controllers and other devices and all the swag. The swag was really well displayed with t-shirt samples on the walls so you didn't have to rifle through them all. read more

Avoid this place. We should have taken notice of the previous reviews noting atrocious customer service and employees bent towards making things difficult. Marvin was extremely unhelpful and kept on coming up with different official policies why a new unused video game couldn't be returned or exchanged. First it was because it was past their "official 7 day return policy", which is unusually short, when we asked to see the policy it was right there printed on a plastic mat on the checkout counter and it clearly says 30 days. Oh that's "only for Pro members" he says. Read policy again, nope, doesn't say only for Pro members. Oh "that's our old policy, it shouldn't be there" on the counter, where we sell games to people...So where's the new policy, and after reading the other mat they have on a different counter, it by the way also doesn't say 7 days but it says 15 days. We had the credit card used for purchase but not the receipt and when we asked if he could look up the transaction, he said if it was a busy day he wouldn't even be having this conversation. Looking around the nearly empty store I said but it's not a busy day, and then he says its tedious to do so he won't do it and then he mentions they couldn't accept the return as new anyways as it's not in the original packaging BUT that's the exact condition it was sold it to us without a seal or wrapper. If you read other reviews it seems like this happens, they sell unwrapped, unsealed games as new and then hassle people when attempting to return. Both Marvin and co-worker Kurt almost seemed to take pleasure in our inability to make what we thought would be a straight forward exchange of one new unplayed game for another. At the end of the conversation the only option we were given was to trade the new unplayed game back to their store for 1/3 of the cost we purchased it for which we didn't do. The wasted money didn't bug me nearly as much as the attitude and constantly changing story about their policies. Stay clear of this place. read more

I bought two nintendo games two days ago, when I paid for the games which are NEW, the register didn't put the circle sealed stickers for me because the new employee couldn't find them. I thought it is fine without the stickers, while I didn't know you need the stickers on if I would like to return as new with full refund. Also, the price label on one of the game says $40 when I bought them but they actually charged me $59.99 (I should have checked when I paid). Then, when I went back to try to return it, they were not able to do any price adjustment or do a full refund for me because there was no "seal sticker" which I never got it when I bought it. At the same time, I found out there were a lot of scratches on the cartridge when it's supposed to be a NEW game. The scratches are deep, if you are trying to sell a game that it has been used, please don't label it as NEW. read more

I've never been to this EB Games when they've had a Wii in stock, but they always have lots of used DS games for sale (but never Tetris). They don't have a huge selection like Best Buy, but if you know what you need, they can order it for you. Used games are usually $5 cheaper than new ones, but you don't get the correct box, so I stick with new ones. If you like EA games like The Sims, Madden, etc., you should definitely check them out at EB. The story is, guys who work at EA in Redwood Shores come here to sell their games, often brand new, and then EB Games sells them as used. The guys who work here are really helpful and knowledgeable about the game systems and games they sell. Ask them for recommendations and they're usually more than happy to help. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonus points for: Once upon a time (8 months ago), there was a midnight release for The Burning Crusade, the World of Warcraft expansion. Guess who went? MEEEEEEE! :) There must have been at least 100 people in line. Guys with their girlfriends (who probably don't play WoW), biker dudes, a group of goths, and of course a fair share of geeks and nerds. You remember those guys who used to play Magic or D&D in A Hall? (Aragon High School reference!) They were there with friends... and I was there by myself. Thank God for cell phones. I stayed on the phone with my bf who gave me the play by play of the new expansion and then my friend Tim, who I convinced to stay on the phone, so I wouldn't feel like a loner. This was the Hillsdale EB Games' first midnight release and I think it went pretty smoothly. While my bf had to wait outside of a cold NY Game Stop, I got to wait inside the mall. I really recommend getting the Elite Pro rewards card. 1. The card itself is dope (it's very sleek) 2. The rewards are exceptional if you keep yourself up to date about deals Gamestop is having, and if it's your go-to spot for games. Anyway, primarily I'm writing this review because of Cory's outstanding customer service. I don't look like gamer. Period. He probably thought I was in the wrong store when I walked in. Either way, he was really friendly and KNOWLEDGEABLE. I bought a bunch of games for my students, but was told that the games were too expensive to give out. Wasn't able to return them either... so basically I felt as though I just wasted a bunch of money. Cory helped explain to me the best way I could get as much of my money back as possible, & suggested that I get a Rewards card. It benefits both me and Gamestop because I was able to sell my semi-used games for store credit. I think you just maximize personal profit if you do store credit, because if you want cash Gamestop will pay less for it. All in all, Cory was really helpful and professional even though there was a line of angry parents/shoppers because it seems like I came in the day that everyone else decided to sell their games too. Came in to trade in my PS4. The employee, Tracy, without even turning it on told me I'd have to take it home and update it in order to see the storage capacity in order to proceed with trade in. This ended up being a needless errand since when I took it home I was immediately able to see the storage and didn't have to perform any update. After bringing it back a second time to Tracy and telling her that I didn't need to do any update she just rolled her eyes and said 'good'. In addition she added that I'd also need to bring the HDMI cable (which she didn't mention after sending me home the first time) or buy one in order to process the trade in. Five Star Service! This is my local game stop although its lacked good customer service for a good while. So I would either shop online or go to target. Although recently Rachel changed my mind. She was highly attentive, productive, knowledgeable and positive. On Black Friday, the most insane shopping day of the year, she made me feel like a valued customer and not just a person in line. They sold me a brand new game and when I got home I realized the case was broken. It was still in the sealed plastic and there was no plastic shards inside that. Thus, it must have been broken before placed in the sealed bag. They decided to sell it anyway. I didn't realize until I was already home (1 hour away). I tried calling customer service and the wait time said it would be 30+ minutes. Not pleased that I purchased a brand new game, at brand new price, and received a damaged model. The store was staffed with only ONE person, so had to stay in line for my inquiry, but I didn't make it to the register. That's because my one year old was slapping a pop up display with a plastic window on it, while I waited in an unmoving line, my wife was told to make him stop. So, I grabbed the oldest and jetted out of the store with my family. This store lost a sale and a customer for not being properly staffed and for not being kid friendly. Advice: be kind to parents with little kids. It's tough being a parent and it's really tough to go shopping in stores where people give you the stink eye. Kids will be kids! read more

I have to say, in 2008 around the holidays, GameStop stores made me so angry and disatisfied with their lack luster service and downright obnoxious employees at multiple locations around the Peninsula that I swore I would never ever buy anything from them... Flash forward to 2010 and I guess I'm more forgiving in some respects. This 2010 I went ahead and purchased a PS3 with all the features. As it just so happened, I purchased the game system at the Tanforan Mall location. It was only out of sheer convenience of the location. Initially I was actually looking to purchase the unit through F.Y.E. but they were unfortunately out of stock. By comparison, F.Y.E. has exceptional customer service. But I wanted the unit that day. Sooo I went ahead and got it from the Tanforan GameStop. The trouble with the GameStop in Tanforan was that the Associates were all more interested in chatting up their buddies coming into the store or pre-occupied with going out on a break. And it wasn't like I was asking to take up oodles of their time. It was literally "I know the game system I want but at least tell me what it comes with and maybe what would be the better complimentary add ons"...Particularly since the box the unit comes in wasn't so easy to find the details of what was included and not included. Overall, it wasn't as bad as the 2008 holiday. But the service was still lousy. By comparison, the GameStop in the Bayhill Strip in San Bruno put Tanforan to shame with exceptional service. So much so that they made me wish that I had waited and purchased the unit from them. They were very knowledgeable and immediately offered assistance in every aspect of gaming entertainment. I love the GameStop at the Bayhill location. The Belmont GameStop was another location that offered really good service and had a good selection of new and used games. They were cheerful, amuzing and attentive to the customers in the store. The Hillsdale mall was also a good experience for the two to three times I've recently shopped there. My only disappointment with my last venture there was that they had game box of a new arrival game as having just come out, only for me to go up and find that it wasn't really in stock. Or better said...although the game was "just released" they were already sold out. However, the Associate was nice enough to make other suggestions and was able to provide light humor to it all. I still ended up purchasing two games that day. It's been a good while since visiting the San Carlos location but their service wasn't bad when I did visit that store. But the stores I've consistently visited and gotten both useful and exceptional service from are Bayhill San Bruno, Hillsdale Mall San Mateo and Belmont. Stores I would not support and have gotten poor responses if not relatively ignored at are Tanforan, Serramonte and Daly City. Not all GameStops are created equal. read more

Alright, I don't normally go to Gamestop stores because most of them are poorly organized, have terrible customer service, and flat out don't have what I want. I could also go on a tirade about used games, but this isn't the place. Anyway, I'm a little tight on cash and really wanted to play Ni No Kuni, so I bit the bullet and pulled some games from my collection to go trade them in to get Ni No Kuni. The only reason I picked this Gamestop location is that it's close by so I don't waste a bunch of gas driving all over the Peninsula. This particular location is very well organized and clean. It was super easy to trade in my three games to get the game I wanted and the guy behind the counter (his name is Thomas) was SUPER helpful and very friendly. He explained everything clearly and got me every discount he could in order to get the game I wanted for as cheaply as possible. He didn't try to push a used copy on me or any other deal. I really wish more Gamestop locations were like this one! The company does itself a disservice with all the less than stellar locations out there with staff who aren't friendly and knowledgeable. This is the GameStop thats closest to my apartment. It's also on my way home from work since I work in the South Bay. I usually stop in twice a month depending on what games are coming out. The service is usually quick. If it isn't, the employees are usually very apologetic when it comes to there being a line of customers. The staff knows me personally since I've been shopping there for the past two years. It's nice because they actually remember my name and know what kinds of games I'm usually into. Knowing that the staff actually cares about their customers is a good feeling and I really appreciate that kind of attention to detail. There are a few reasons why I didn't give this store a 5 star rating. 1) It's not exactly the nicest smelling store nor is it the cleanest. Comparing it to the Belmont store which isn't that much further away from this location, the cleanliness difference is practically night and day. The Belmont store is immaculate every time I've been there and the Hillsdale location looks like a bunch of kids have ransacked the place. Considering the store is in a shopping mall, theres more foot traffic. Though for me personally as a former retail slave, store cleanliness usually is directly correlated to how invested the staff is in their workplace. I think this is something that could definitely be addressed with their store manager. 2) Constant heckling. I understand it's their job to ask us if I want to pre-order another game or get a Power Up card membership. (I've been a member for as long as I can remember.) I'm well aware that UPT (units per transaction) is measurable data for their staff to determine performance but if you have loyal repeat customers, theres no need to try to force them to buy things they don't want or need based upon their previous purchasing experience. It's a hard thing to really nitpick and measure but it's something that does make a difference in my shopping experience. I can't reiterate enough that I really do like this store and I recommend that people in the San Mateo/Foster City area to shop there! read more

This is the closest Gamestop for us so we come here to support our gaming habit. There is nothing here you wouldn't expect from any other Gamestop, but they are always super helpful and nice here. You can tell they really know what they are talking about. Today we went to buy a racing game and had a hard time choosing between two of them. The guy behind the counter explained one was a demo while the other was the full game. He also showed us there was a coupon for DLC in the game if we bought it new for $2 more than the used one. We left there happy and feeling like we got a deal. We'll be back when we need our next fix! read more
