This is the GameStop thats closest to my apartment. It's also on my way home from work since I work in the South Bay. I usually stop in twice a month depending on what games are coming out. The service is usually quick. If it isn't, the employees are usually very apologetic when it comes to there being a line of customers. The staff knows me personally since I've been shopping there for the past two years. It's nice because they actually remember my name and know what kinds of games I'm usually into. Knowing that the staff actually cares about their customers is a good feeling and I really appreciate that kind of attention to detail. There are a few reasons why I didn't give this store a 5 star rating. 1) It's not exactly the nicest smelling store nor is it the cleanest. Comparing it to the Belmont store which isn't that much further away from this location, the cleanliness difference is practically night and day. The Belmont store is immaculate every time I've been there and the Hillsdale location looks like a bunch of kids have ransacked the place. Considering the store is in a shopping mall, theres more foot traffic. Though for me personally as a former retail slave, store cleanliness usually is directly correlated to how invested the staff is in their workplace. I think this is something that could definitely be addressed with their store manager. 2) Constant heckling. I understand it's their job to ask us if I want to pre-order another game or get a Power Up card membership. (I've been a member for as long as I can remember.) I'm well aware that UPT (units per transaction) is measurable data for their staff to determine performance but if you have loyal repeat customers, theres no need to try to force them to buy things they don't want or need based upon their previous purchasing experience. It's a hard thing to really nitpick and measure but it's something that does make a difference in my shopping experience. I can't reiterate enough that I really do like this store and I recommend that people in the San Mateo/Foster City area to shop there! read more

Stopped by this GameStop while out with the wife and kids to ask about a trade-in value and maybe pick up a used game. The store was staffed with only ONE person, so had to stay in line for my inquiry, but I didn't make it to the register. That's because my one year old was slapping a pop up display with a plastic window on it, while I waited in an unmoving line, my wife was told to make him stop. So, I grabbed the oldest and jetted out of the store with my family. This store lost a sale and a customer for not being properly staffed and for not being kid friendly. Advice: be kind to parents with little kids. It's tough being a parent and it's really tough to go shopping in stores where people give you the stink eye. Kids will be kids! read more

This is the closest Gamestop for us so we come here to support our gaming habit. There is nothing here you wouldn't expect from any other Gamestop, but they are always super helpful and nice here. You can tell they really know what they are talking about. Today we went to buy a racing game and had a hard time choosing between two of them. The guy behind the counter explained one was a demo while the other was the full game. He also showed us there was a coupon for DLC in the game if we bought it new for $2 more than the used one. We left there happy and feeling like we got a deal. We'll be back when we need our next fix! read more

I have had consistently good experiences at the Hillsdale mall location. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and I have never had any difficulty in making returns or exchanges. Travis, who works there, was particularly helpful in recommending new titles. If only all retail workers could share in his good nature. This was my very first time visiting this Game Stop location. Overall, I thought it was a good visit in general. I found what I was looking for, which is always the same Nickelodeon cash cards they sell on their rack. I stood in line with a mother of 5 although, 3 boys could have been her son's friends, but with the new game coming out, they party was trying to figure out who was going to pick up the game next week, which was rather annoying because they were going back and forth. Couldn't make up his/her mind. I was already exhausted from my day trip over to the East Palo Alto/San Mateo from East Bay. Another sales guy came out from the back, which my receipt read as James. He was very helpful and we had a small conversation that went something like this. James: "Oh, you play Moneky Quest also?" Me: "Nope. But, I play Neopets." James: *He takes a glance on the back side of the Nickelodeon to realize Neopets was also good for the cash card* hehe And says, "I think Neopets has their own cash card also." Me: "Yeah, .. Neopets did have their own Neocash cards, but they recently stopped making them and brought out these Nickelodeon cards." End of conversation, but the customer service was great as I expect from any other Game Stops I've been to. On the Neopets site, some Ncers are embarrassed to admit that he/she still plays on Neopets let alone they buy these Nickelodeon cash cards for the NC Mall, but what they forget is that Adam and Donna had created Neopets for College students at the time, but now .. the website, which is owned by Viacom has focused their site towards family friendly so ALL ages plays on Neopets. I'm a game developer, so I'm purchasing games a lot. I'm weary of Gamestops pre order force feeding that their employees are instructed to do, but they used to fill a need of release day delivery. I had called up this store to see if they had a PC title in stock, which they said they had. Since I live 5 minutes away, I told them I would be right over. Which I was.... and of course, they did NOT have the title in Stock. and there was no apology. Just flippant attitudes. I asked to speak to the Manager, Jeremy, who proceeded to Blame me for NOT getting the name of the person I spoke to over the phone. As if the 2 male employees at the store weren't the ones responsible. All I was looking for was an apology and some courtesy. This Jeremy was very rude, and not only that, tried to cross into the personal space bubble, trying to intimidate me physically. and he's the Manager. Wow. Never again. Between every other word out of the employees mouths being Pre-order, and rude distasteful customer service..... Try Best Buy for a much better experience. Best Buy now gets the games on exact release dates, so thankfully there's no reason to shop at Gamestop anymore. read more

Don't buy any high value items like consoles or headphones from Gamestop. They always sell you "warranty" on items and when you actually go back to claim the warranty if something breaks, they will ask you for the receipt. You would think they will reprint your receipt for you at a later time if you ever needed to, right?. Nope, they claim that they can't reprint receipts. And that's how they screw you out of warranty. Do you file and catalog your receipts for years in this day and age? If you buy the same item at a major store like best buy, they can pull up and reprint your receipt years later if you needed to. So this is more of a mixed review since honestly aspects of this store did frustrate me about a preorder I had place, though the actions of some of their associates saved the review from going lower. All I have to say is that though it was a frustrating process, the staff was able to locate the item I placed a pre order from after they ended up having to sell off the one they received for me and later found out they didn't know when another one would arrive. In the past this location has had several negative spikes in my book but this assistance made up for a portion of it. read more

I recently purchased a used PS3 120gb and upon returning home it was missing the cable to charge the controller. It was 20mins one way to go back to the store to have them give me the correct cable, 20mins BACK HOME. Guess what? THE CABLE DOESN'T WORK. So I pack up EVERYTHING and bring it back to the store. Chris gives me a new cable that works finally and now 20mins BACK HOME. So 20mins X 4 + Gas = PISSED CUSTOMER Although it was made right, I feel it should have been checked first. Chris was very friendly and helpful in resolving the issue. I'm still a little upset about having to go back and forth 4 TIMES to resolve a cable issue. read more

I went into this store to give out a flyer of a person who was murder in the Hillsdale parking lot a week earlier and they looked at me like I was trying to give them the plague or something. Every store I went to inside the mall was very helpful and supportive of the cause to catch the person who did this. They we're the only ones that made me feel uncomfortable to be in their store. They did have a good sale on xbox 360's but after being treated like that, I'd rather pay full price somewhere else that to give my money to these guys. Granted, no store is obligated to take anything from anyone for any reason, but at least have the decency to tell me that instead of redirecting to people who just turn their backs and ignore me on purpose. My buddy happened to stop by exactly at seven which was when Gamestop close. The door was unlocked with a customer still inside. As we approached a Gentlman by the name of Roy a very rude attitude spilled out of his mouth. My buddy was asking if he could by a game and the gentleman said get out of my store while a register was still open and another employee was letting a customer buy a game. GameStop is great for used games, but when you buy used games, some games are scratched, the wii games in particular look like discarded discs, they are unplayable and constant freezing. I felt the games I bought were watered down ports of Xbox and ps3 games. Also if you are going to trade your game at GameStop, make sure you know the value of the game is not less than half of the used game price, they were going to give people only a few dollars on mario wii games. GameStop needs to stop being greedy with giving people way less than 30%, or people won't buy from them anymore, Amazon gives more, but only online. Let this be a warning for GameStop to be more fair with your customers, and give them the fair amount for games so they will buy more from GameStop. read more

Good place to buy video games for the least amount of money but do not trade games in here. They do not pay well at all.

GameStop stores can be a mixed experience. However, I felt this latest incident was worth noting. My sister went in on Wednesday and preordered Mario Kart, but was told the register could not allow prepaying of the wheel controllers. The female clerk was nice enough to put the controller aside in a box labeled with my name with the prepaid game. Come Friday my sister returns to purchase the controller and pick up the prepaid game. The cashier pulls out the labeled box and tries to scan the controller, but the manager says someone else has prepaid for it so it can't be purchased. So, someone else could prepay for an item set aside for us, but we were not allowed to? How is that fair? This is sadly not the first time I've faced issues with their limited stock so we tried calling around, but the three other nearby stores were in the same position (except perhaps the one in Santa Clara that wouldn't pick up), but I'd be less upset if the manager had been a little more polite. It is no wonder people turn to other retailers, including Amazon, for better service. read more

This is the best gamestop ever!!! The staff is very friendly and helpful. I came in to buy a game and renew my membership. They had it used which was good because you get 10% off. I asked if my membership was expired and it was so I asked how I can renew by using my points and they gave me step by step instructions on how but it didn't work on my iphone so they let me login another way. I renewed using my points, got 10% off, and got great customer service. Thanks to Alex! read more
