We had a lovely dinner here recently, very kind staff, delicious classic dishes, nice atmosphere. It feels very cozy and intimate, which makes it stand out from its surroundings in the village. The dinner specials are the way to go! For around $20 you can get appetizers, an entree or two depending on whether it's meat or veg, and a dessert. The samosas and onion bhaji are crispy, flavorful, and delicious, and the accompanying sauces were a nice addition of spice. My favorite curry was the lamb malai, so creamy with the coconut and almond, the meat was super tender, so tasty to soak up with naan. The eggplant begune bhartha and saag paneer were great as well, but the lamb stole the show. It was delicious to have a half carafe of red wine with the meal as well. Everything felt very high quality and thoughtful, reasonably priced, busy but not difficult to get a table on a Saturday night. One of my favorite Indian spots in the city so far, a true hidden gem! read more

This is my go to Indian food spot in all of NYc. Hidden gem. Definitely the best authentic Indian food hands down. Tastes like the Indian food you get in England . Just hits different than all the rest. Last night we got bhindi masala, chicken jalfrezi and chicken dopiaza which was a request , wasn't on the menu but they made it specially. In terms of sit-down Indian restaurants in Manhattan that is not in Murray Hill, I think Gandhi Cafe might be the best one out there. Came here on a Saturday night close towards closing. The service was fairly quick given that things were winding down. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. The ambiance is very no frills. We got the lamb tikka, chicken vindaloo, garlic naan and some samosas. They were all very good. The chicken vindaloo was a tad bit spicy. The naan was very fresh. I made a reservation and they confirmed with me via phone call the night before, but they still seemed unprepared for us and didn't have the table setup ready. Took a while for the food to come out as well so the whole ordeal took close to 2 hours. Ordering was chaotic and our waiter was confusing / not very helpful. Butter chicken ($13) - got the regular size, not lunch special portion which is much smaller. The regular size was a normal portion size, albeit on the smaller side. Came with rice. This was tasty and creamy, and had a nice amount of chicken in it. Cheese Naan ($5) - this was great, and the cheese inside was flavorful. It came warm too so it was still melty. Overall, pretty good casual spot but wouldn't come back here for a company team lunch or anything time-sensitive. read more

I've ordered from this restaurant many times via Uber eats and the food has always arrived hot and the order complete. Tonight, the Uber driver was delayed picking up my order and the restaurant. Just let it sit on the counter (their words, not mine) until it was picked up. Sadly, by the time it reached me, it was cold and barely edible but that's what happens with a delivery service. However, they had forgotten the rice. Not okay. I called the restaurant and they apologized for the rice and only agreed to deliver the rice when I asked repeatedly. For the first time, I ordered their rice pudding. In the photo online, it looked like any other rice pudding that I have ordered at Indian restaurants; white/off-white color. What I received was orange. The consistency was that of something puréed. I should not have tasted it, but I did. I have no idea what it was but it was not a rose water rice pudding because there was nothing that resembled rosewater or rice. It tasted like a sweetened watered down curry. And no, I did not order a side of masala sauce. I've ordered and enjoyed their food in the past, but between the missing rice and unidentifiable food item, I will not order from them again. read more

The decorations were awesome and made the restaurant feel very homey! The food was absolutely delicious -- I would definitely recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala (a classic). We were feeling curious and ordered the Lobster Curry and I was honestly really surprised by how good it was. Our dishes came with complimentary Basmati Rice and the restaurant employees were super kind and gave us complimentary dessert too. I have been ordering from Gandhi for over 30 years. Their food quality has been sketchy for a few years, but seems to be on the mend again. I had written a negative review yesterday, but realized after the fact that the special instructions I had included actually had been included so I am adjusting to a more positive tone. Came here on a Thursday night with my best friend after work. We used a Pulsd voucher which honestly made all of this so so worth it. Our Pulsd voucher was $29 for 2 entrees and a bottle of wine (your choice of red or white). We got a bunch of things on the side as well, totaling our entire dinner to cost less than $50 even after tip--which is a steal. Considering our history with Pulsd vouchers, it's always a hit or miss. But this was definitely a hit. This restaurant is a hole in the wall, kind of tacky and tiny, but at the food is sooooo delicious and so cheap it makes up for everything. All of the appetizers/soups/salads were less than $6 and you got a good portion size. All of the entrees ranged from $12-18, but majority cost $13. The rice and bread sides were less than $5 and all of the desserts were $3. We didn't see the drink menu because we knew we were just going to get a bottle of wine with our voucher. The restaurant is definitely a must visit even without the voucher, but the voucher gets your the free wine essentially! We ordered our food and it came out within 10 minutes which is crazy!! We got papadam on the house, one order of vegetable samosas (comes with 2), chicken korma, chicken vindaloo, with a shared rice plate, two orders of garlic naan, and firni (Kheer) for the both of us on the house, and of course our bottle of Chianti. I tried this based on the reviews and I am confused. The chicken tikka masala was way too sweet and there was no spice whatsoever. The meat to sauce ratio was laughable as there were maybe 5 pieces of meat swimming in the sauce. The simosas were fried a bit too hard but tasty with a nice kick. Came here for an early dinner last evening at 6:45pm after catching an amazing burlesque show at stonewall inn. The service was incredible, super friendly attentive without being overbearing and efficient. Now for the food: The complimentary "chips and dips" were an amazing way to start the meal. We ordered the pre set dinner with goat mildly spicy and the classic chicken tikka masa. Absolutely delicious! My first time having Indian ever and what an incredibly high bar was set. The naan was crispy and soft and oh so delicious. The pudding for dessert made me feel like a little Indian kid- so happy and light. Minus one star because there was some cross contamination with nuts as my dining partner started reacting despite being assured there are no nuts. Would I come back? Stumbled into this hole in the wall indian place in the heart of the village and it did not dissapoint. I ordered the goat vindalloo, spicy & delish! My friend ordered lamb curry & she loved it too. The fritters and all the appetizers we tried are all tasty. It came with the onion, yogurt & red sauce condiment. Its like a party for your taste buds. The place is also with character, like those indian restaurant i usually see in the movies, with indian music in the back ground. Our waiter keeps on checking on us without being intruding. We didnt feel like we are being rushed while we were there. We got a lot of extra we didnt expect. First he gave as papadam on the house for appetizer, then rice pudding & tea at the end of the meal...and also we didnt come out smelling of indian food once we came out. As soon as the shrimp malai came to the table it had a very distinctive smell to it and had to send it back. The Chicken Kashmiri had chunks of pineapple and was sweet gravy. Usually chicken Kashmiri is always on the spicier side . Everything in this place was sweet. The best thing in this establishment was the TAJ Mahal beer and water. Man bummer of a meal. I feel like Yelp really led me astray here. All the food was super sugary and lacked spice or herbaceous flavor. The curry was mealy. This might be the worst Indian food I've ever had unfortunately. The naan was 3.50 for one tasteless sugary piece. Certainly edible, but I wouldn't never reach for it again. This place is your classic grandpa's authentic Desi food joint. I say grandpa instead of grandma because our server totally had the vibe of a caring elder who just wanted to feed you. I loved it! The papar was crisp and a great appetizer. The samosa chat satisfied my craving and I wanted more. The naan was well cooked and the main dishes were tasty. I appreciate that the paneer masala had a good amount of paneer as some places only put a few to save on cost. Places to improve: the green chutney was not as viscous as it should be and it was hard to eat with the papar because it kept dripping off.
