    Mango lassi
    Ada F.

I don't even know where to begin with this review.. I'm torn between the delicious quality of the food and the horrendous service that happened at the restaurant. So first thing first: Food: We ordered a curry dish and a chicken tiki masala. Rice was extra. I wonder why Indian places always charge extra for rice?? Anyways, we ordered garlic naan and tandoori chicken wings for appetizers and a mango lassi. The food was all very flavorful and yummy! The curry was surprisingly not spicy at all. I asked for medium. The tiki masala had an interesting flavor to it. It wasn't the typical butter chicken flavor I am familiar with. But it was okay. I definitely recommend the lamb curry #4, the lamb was so soft and delectable! Garlic naan was crispy and garlic packed flavors. Service: LACKING SO MUCH IN SERVICE. We waited at least 10 minutes for our waiter to come get our orders. After he got our order, I was waiting for my mango lassi. He gave us our appetizers and I still didn't get my drink, so I asked him. He said he "forgot" to put in my mango lassi on the order and would bring it out. After that, he never came to check up on us and even told me to wait one time when I flagged him down to refill our water glasses. Finally, the breaking point was how it took him 30 minutes to give us our check. The first time, it took him 15 minutes to bring us our check, another 5 minutes to pick it up, and then another guy brought us our check back without swiping the card. That has NEVER happened before. So after 30 minutes, they gave us the bill with the swiped credit card. RIDICULOUS. If you're hoping to eat authentic Indian food BUT also wait for horrible service, this is your place. I wouldn't come back again because of how this restaurant severely lacks in service.

Avocado chutney with garlic naan. Amazing.

There are a lot of decent places to get Indian food in the Twin Cities. Whenever I eat at Gandhi Mahal, I wonder why I bother with those places. I've never had anything at Gandhi Mahal that wasn't delicious. My favorite dish is the coconut curry with shrimp, which may be the tastiest thing I've ever had at an Indian restaurant. The avocado chutney is also mind blowing. I want to be cute and call it an Indian guacamole, but that's not accurate -- it has this unique creaminess and spice profile I can't decipher. Just trust me and get this! The vegetarian curries are good too, and they're not overly creamy and greasy like at most places. The veggies are the star. I also love their mango and pistachio lassis. I usually don't order a lassi because I don't want to fill up, but these are way better than typical ones and are worth it. The atmosphere is nice -- on a recent Saturday night, they had live music. The service isn't the friendliest, but the food is so good they could plop it down in front of me for all I care. Seriously, the only Indian place in town that's comparable in quality is Gorkha Palace. Minneapolis at its best!

    Tandoori chicken and Tikka Masala.

I have been here a few times for the buffet. Nice atmosphere. Several vegetarian and chicken options. I'm a big fan of the Tandoori Chicken and Tikka Masala. I think the food is well balanced and has great taste. They also have tasty sauces which you can use to enhance the flavor. I am not an expert on Indian food, but I do know that there are a lot of different styles of cooking it, even within the same regions. I do feel like this is authentic food and that they use quality ingredients. My only suggestion is not to eat way too much (which is hard) because you'll just wanna go home and lay out for rest of the day. I will have to order their dinner menu one of these days. (Side note: If you show up to a buffet 10 minutes to closing time, and are mad because there is not much food left, it is your fault. You either should have planned your schedule better or gone to a different place to eat. It is really as simple as that. In my opinion, this goes for every place offering a buffet.)

I've got buffet-belly right now. I'm still recovering from another satisfying lunch at Gandhi Mahal. I used to eat here a minimum of once a month... and my life was beautiful then. I can give it five spicy stars. Service: I have always found the staff at Gandhi Mahal to be extra friendly and helpful. I believe the majority of the employees are from the same extended family. Spice: The servers are also being honest when they advise against ordering super-extra-melt-your-tongue-off-hot. Unless your taste buds are freakishly dull, just don't do it. Of course, I did it anyway when I came for dinner the first time... because I insisted, "My dad's Indian--I can take it.. blah blah blah." I LOVE spicy food, but the highest heat levels hurt both my tongue and my pride. Food: I can't remember the names of everything, but during lunch today they were serving vegetable curry, tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, yellow dal (so yummy!), pulao, a mushroom and paneer dish, lamb and potatoes (this was amazing) and a few other things that I didn't get around to trying like salad (pshh), desserts, etc. It's also a nice touch that they offer fresh naan to everyone before putting it out on the buffet. They use cloves liberally, and I think a lot of the dishes could be improved with just a little less cloves since it's such an intense spice, but I'm just being nit-picky about that. Some people might like it that way. I appreciate a good piece of naan, and I would say this is one of the only things that isn't drop-dead wonderful at Gandhi Mahal. It's way better when you order it at dinner (get the garlic naan), but it pales in comparison to what I ate in India. That's to be expected, I suppose. They are also lacking in South Indian food, but I can't fault them for that. North Indian food is good too and it's standard for the Indian restaurants in the U.S. Atmosphere: A couple of months ago, they opened a kebab bar in their expanded space. I peeked at it today and I'd like to come back and see what it's all about sometime. They also added a couple of sidewalk tables this year. The decor has always been nice here too. It's more tastefully done up than most Indian restaurants (except for the plastic tablecloths). Price: The prices are on the high end for some dishes. The buffet is a deal ($10 or so) though. The dinner menu choices are large enough that you will always have leftovers. Taking that into consideration, I think the prices are fair, but I wish it was a bit cheaper so I could come more often!

    Rogan Josh with tofu...3.5/5 stars.
    Eva D.

3.5 stars that rounds up to 4 stars. Cute ambience and decoration. Be careful about sitting near the free the front door as dinner will be a cold and drafty experience. We tried the rogan josh with tofu, the vendi with shrimp and chicken razala. We also tried the mango lassi and plain naan. The naan was a stand out...fresh,fluffy and buttery. 5/5 for the naan. The mango lassi is runnier than others, and tastes almost like it's made with a powder. 2/5 for the mango lassi. The 3 entrees were fragrant and spicy as we requested. Weird thing is the razala and josh were almost too fragrant, like too many spices competing with a slightly odd flavor but still good. 3.5/5 stars for both. The shrimp vendi was pretty delicious - 4/5 as you get rather small shrimp with it for an $18 entree. All in all, pretty good and some flavors you may not find in a typical Indian restaurant...but not sure if compelling enough if you don't live close by.

Their tikka masala is awesome. I love their bowls. The younger generation have taken over the business. Can't wait to see what they do.

As a vegetarian, I was in heaven at the number of items that I could choose from. Thankfully, my companions were all willing to split dishes, so I could try more than one. We started out with the lentil green onion pancakes. They were don't earth than I had expected. I thought they would be more of a super crispy flat dish, but they have the substance of a real pancake, with savory flavors. Really wonderful. We ordered three entrées, including the jackfruit and the eggplant. The jackfruit was my absolute favorite, but that was not universal. I think it was very well well prepared, but not everyone likes jackfruit and not everyone loves those spices. But it made me so happy. The eggplant dish was pretty good, but the potato two eggplant ratio could be improved. A few too many potatoes and not enough eggplant. Otherwise excellent. The service was fine. The owner did come over and say hello to us afterwards and he was delightful. Another excellent immigrant owned business to support in Minneapolis.
