Went to Gaonnuri for Restaurant Week with 6 people, we got a nice table by the window, unfortunately we had a huge column in the middle of the table, despite this it was still a nice table! We got to enjoy the beautiful evening sunset views of NYC. We all ordered from the RW menu which had some excellent options! We got all of the apps, even a few we got 2x more. The stand out dish was the japchae noodles! I really enjoyed this. The fried chicken was ok, had heavy crispy breading and the root veggie salad was only a few small pieces of beets. The Tuna tartare was also ok too (I did not try this but I got the low-down on this dish), others commented on the spiciness level of this dish. For our mains, we ordered 4 BBQs, which were all cooked at our table by a server, who was good. However, my only complaint was that I had to ask for extra spinach, kimchi banchans several times. So he was not quick in getting us extras. Maybe he was told there would be a ration? I don't know. Either way, it took a few times of asking to get these extra banchans. However, he did spend extra time with us to make sure our meats were cooked well (especially for me as I was only eating well-cooked!) We got the Wagyu steak, Prime rib, Galbi, and the pork. Note the Wagyu steak and Prime rib were both extra upcharges! And honestly, I did not really love the prime rib. The Wagyu was OK (but not worth the $25 upcharge). The BEST bbq cut was definitely the Galbi! We all raved about how delicious, tender and had the best marinate! And I was not a fan of the pork either. On top of these BBQ dishes, we also got 2x of the Black Cod Gui (a must! So delicious!) For dessert, it included black sesame ice cream or strawberry. We got both flavors. Loved them both! Overall, I was very happy with the Japchae, galbi BBQ, black cod Gui (must get!). All the others were good too, but nothing I would run back for. I went to Gaonnuri for a work event and they already had a family-style dinner set planned out for us. It included BBQ meats that were already grilled for us. Started off with several delicious appetizers. The tofu salad featured fresh veggies and soft, chewy bite-sized tofu in a pear vinaigrette. The bossam was very solid with a savory, shrimp-forward sauce. The fried chicken was also tender, crispy, and spicy. I would have preferred the beef japchae to be less saucey. For the main meats, we only got to try the NY strip and chicken breast. The former was a little overcooked, and the latter was a little dry although well-marinated/seasoned. This may also just be in the setting of a corporate dinner and the set meal is supposed to cater to a wide variety of people instead of customizing with a grill myself. The veggies (zucchini, mushroom, asparagus) were all grilled very nicely and well-seasoned! The bibimbap was good too; loved how we can adjust how much sauce to mix in ourselves. I would have preferred a higher ingredient to rice ratio. For dessert, we got a sesame ice cream with mini madeleines. The views are amazing - perfect for visitors, tourists, and transplants alike! It was a little hard to find the entrance but there is a door next to Tiger Sugar. I went from the Nomad Tower entrance and the security guard was nice enough to walk me through lobby that connects to the elevators. Staff at Gaonnuri were also very polite and attentive. The room easily fit 10 people and was quiet enough compared to the rest of the dining area. I'd be interested in coming back to check out their other meats and sides! read more

They asked us how we usually like our meat and we told them medium rare. Although the meat came out more well than medium rare, it was not a big deal. The food was great. Just a note - if you are coming with multiple people, everyone has to get the same combo set. We were interested in getting a premium set and a gaon set but they said everyone has to get the same set, so we ended up getting 2 premium sets, which came with the American Wagyu flatiron, 21 day dry aged prime ribeye, and marinated galbi. read more

Came here to celebrate an anniversary! We made a reservation for when they opened (5pm) as we hoped to have a quieter setting. We also wished we could come another time so that we could actually see the sunset! I requested a window seat and we definitely got a great seat that we could see the city views. The service felt very attentive but also not too stuffy. We got the Gaon set with the braised black cod as an a la carte. We considered getting the omakase or the tasting menu but I have a shellfish allergy so I didn't think we could get the most out of the tasting menu. It was a good thing we didn't get the omakase because just the meat on the Gaon set was enough to make us feel super full and the meat was decent quality! Our waiter cooked the meat really well and my husband (who's Korean) even commented that the braised cod had an elevanted home cooked taste. He felt out of all the expensive places we ate in NYC that this was the most worth it for him. The cocktails were excellent (despite being $20+, classic NYC). We got the $95 set meal with extra galbi +$10 and a cake fee $30 total for a friend's birthday. The view here is amazing from the 39th floor. Lots of meat here. I think the Galbi is so tender and fatty and the portion is great. The appetizers were actually quite filling. Had to get the seafood pancakes to go since they were so thick. I wasn't so crazy about the potato and fried chicken that was like general gao style. The beef tartare is good. Very fresh. However, my friend told me hers came with dry ice, so maybe it's fancier on the a la carte menu. For dessert it's some ice cream, mini madelines, and raspberry. Somehow, the sauce made it taste like fruit loops. Service is great. They cook the meat for you and frequently refill the water. They didn't give any history on the meat, but we didn't mind. If you're traveling from out of town, this review is for you. My friends and I had a reservation for 8:30pm to do the $195 omakase. The hor d'oeuvres consisted of a salad, 2 pieces of tteokbokki, and a pumpkin soup. A certain green from the salad made the salad taste like clay, the tteokbokki was very good, and the pumpkin soup had a sweet taste with a potatoey consistency. The wait for the meats took longer than expected, and they set out several different sauces to go along with the meats. I personally liked the truffle salt and the ssamjang the most. The flavor of the meats were very good and the person who was cooking our meats for us was excellent. He did a very well in asking about pacing and giving us his recommendations. We had a little break in between where they gave us a tuna amuse-bouche, that was delicious. The ambiance is very romantic with a lovely outlook of the city and there were plenty of businessmen and couples on dates. But our server was inattentive and unavailable. She wouldn't check on us often. Towards the end of the meal, which was around 10, we waited for 30 minutes just waiting for the check. I turned around and no one was left except for our table and another table that was seated after us. We had to call another server to pay, and then we had to wait even longer just waiting for someone to even pass by our table so we could leave. My friend asked at one point if we were supposed to pay in the front because no one was tending to us. By the time we had to leave we were frustrated, because for something that is more than $700 just for 3 people, the service needs to be better. And if it's due to the time of our reservation, then don't put out reservations so late to where you're closing and cannot attend to your customers. If it's because we were not obviously "rich looking", then don't open your restaurant to the general public. Food was good, but if service is gonna suck because of inattentiveness then the most I would have wanted to pay was $70. The experience was subpar to the amount you have to pay. If you eat Korean BBQ regularly, then this was not at all worth it. If you know what you're looking for, the price is not worth it. The food did make us full, but is it really worth $200+ dollars and feeling like a lesser person because there are more important things to attend to? Putting aside the heavy price tag, the food here was pretty terrible. The only good thing we ordered was the seafood pajun. The most offensive part of the meal was that our server wasn't cooking any of the meats properly, which is unfortunate given meat was the star of the show. Everything was cooked rare even though we asked for medium rare so we just kept cooking the meats on our own. The quality of the meats also wasn't quite up to par with other similar spots including places that are much cheaper. The salad came with this really weird tart vinegar dressing that neither of us enjoyed. The place boasts their views but with the way the tables are organized, we were blinded by the sun the entire time and I left with a sore eye. My husband and I have a nostalgic history with Gaonnuri, because it's where he met my parents and extended family for the first time before we got engaged. We hadn't been back in several years but recently brought out-of-town guests for dinner, because we thought they would appreciate the stunning views while enjoying KBBQ. The restaurant is as beautiful as ever and the views are truly breathtaking. The service is also really on point from the minute you enter the building. We ordered the Gaon set for the table and the seafood pancake appetizer. The pancake was delicious. Sometimes seafood pancakes tend to be on the chewier side, but this version is perfect. The Gaon set comes with prime ribeye, marinated galbi, and marinated pork neck as well as assorted banchan, soybean (dwenjang) stew, and egg soufflé. The galbi and pork neck were both so flavorful and tender, and the stew and egg were also very delicious. My only criticism would have to be with the ribeye, which was rather chewy and gristly. Didn't really seem very "prime" compared with other higher-end KBBQ spots, but everything else was great. They have a solid wine list and good cocktails, but the prices are definitely on the high end (small bottles of soju run $50+). You're ultimately paying a premium price for the views and service though, and I definitely thought it was worth it, as did our friends. I would definitely come back, especially with people visiting the area who would appreciate the view. read more

Wow, I had no idea this place existed! Tucked right in the heart of K-town, the entrance is discreetly located next to Tiger Sugar and leads you up to a rooftop spot (it's in an office building!). The KBBQ here is top quality--and the best part? They cook everything for you. We (two people) ordered the premium set along with the seafood bibimbap, and we had tons of leftovers, so the portions are definitely generous for my standard. I especially loved the seafood bibimbap--it's mixed with sea urchin, and every bite had that subtle, creamy hint of uni. Service was super attentive, and the ambiance was lovely. I can only imagine how stunning it must be during sunset. Hands down, this is one of the better KBBQ spots in the area, not just for the food but also for the view. I don't know if you can find a fancier Korean place in Korea town. Gaonnuri is on a super high floor of the Nomad tower providing great views of NYC as you dine. This isn't the place to go for a quick loud boisterous Korean BBQ experience, but more of an elegant fancy celebratory place. I enjoyed the seafood pancakes and the Korean mandu. The bibimbap was ok. Had dinner here in their lounge room. A server was taking orders and requests for the whole room the entire time (kudos to him). We got to try a selection of their menu and everything was served family style. -Seafood pancake: loaded with pieces of shrimp and calamari. They cut it into pieces for us which made it easier to grab a piece to eat. Very savory and paired well with the vinegary dipping sauce. -Vegetable dumplings: this was just okay for me as I'm not a fan of just vegetable fillings in my dumplings. The dipping sauce definitely made it taste better. -Mushroom japchae: one of my favorites of the night. The sesame oil flavor made the dish taste really good and I love mushrooms so I was happy to see all the mushrooms used in this dish. -Sweet and spicy fried chicken: very fancy presentation. It was a tiny bit spicy and not that sweet at all. It was like fried chicken nuggets being that the chicken were in bite sized pieces. -Bbq prime rib: loved the smoky flavor of the beef. I think they cooked it medium to medium well so a few pieces were a bit chewy. This was served with onions and a few pieces of garlic. They also served shredded white radish kimchi, cucumber kimchi, kimchi and samjang alongside. -Bbq shrimp: the shrimp would've been much better if cooked with some butter or spices. By itself, it just tasted bland. -Bibimbap: a small to medium sized serving of rice with some vegetables and beef crumbles. I was too full to eat this but it felt like a palette chaser (because it wasn't too flavorful without the addition of hot sauce which was on the side) -Black sesame ice cream with warm profiteroles: one of my favorite desserts! I loved the contrasting temperatures between the warm and cold dessert. The black sesame flavor of the ice cream had a very strong black sesame flavor which I enjoyed. It was served with a raspberry and on top of a bed of pastry crumbles. -Mango sorbet with chocolate ice cream on a bed of raspberries: would've just preferred the mango sorbet on it's own or maybe with a slice of cake. Honestly this place is located on the 39th floor so the views are bound to be spectacular given that it's glass windows all around. In terms of the food, it might be better to take a short walk over to Ktown or venture to Bayside in Queens for the same if not better tasting food at more affordable prices. read more

I used to have a hard & fast rule to not eat at your favorite restaurants on holidays (you're almost always severely disappointed), but the team at Gaonnuri went above and beyond at New Year's Eve, and gave us a truly special evening! As usual, the room offers stunning, up close views of the Empire State Building (just past the host stand behind the wine rack, to the right), and with our table by the window, we could see all the way up Broadway into Times Square (without any of the crowds, rain or lightning that came with NYE this year). The hostess & wait staff were attentive, and took care of everything from drinks, a 12 course omakase menu, spread out over 2.5 hours, and some fantastic accessories for the midnight celebration. With A LOT of side dishes, we had to take them home for another meal! This is a very good price based on the portion and pretty good BBQ meat. Went back for new year Eve, course menu was just OK, prefer their regular BBQ Menu. Service was always good! Trying to book 2 days before New Year's Eve, we couldn't see anything online anymore, emailed them, they told us to just book any time slots and managed to get us table for the count down! If you are coming here for the Ball drop, you will not be able to see the ball drop building, but we were happy enough to be able to seat up high watching Times Square view, and did not have to jam with traffic later 12am. We went with the seasonal 5 course tasting menu ($145 pp) with some additional amuse-bouche provided by the kitchen. The smoky mushrooms (4/5) were flavorful but cold. The A5 wagyu ssam (5/5) was a delicious bite. The BBQ duo set (3/5) was average - not bad but nothing remarkable. We sat for what felt like an hour before the seafood hot stone bibimbap and beef radish soup set (3/5) came out - a bit salty but the flavor was alright. My favorite part was the winter citrus vacherin dessert (5/5) - a perfect blend of citrus and ginger! Overall, the long wait in service and lack of flavor left us underwhelmed. Usually they cook the meat for you and bring it out one at a time but because they brought it all out at once, it got cold at our table. I'm still getting used to Korean BBQ where they cook the food vs the customers...but a nice thing to not have to worry about while still enjoying seeing the food cooked in front of you.
