I have been shopping at this grocery store for many years. Today, however, I had a very disappointing experience. The cashier was in a bad mood and acted unprofessionally. For the first item, she did not know the price and removed the label from the product. For the second item, she broke the box while handling it. This is the first time I have experienced such poor service here, and it was completely unacceptable. I have a new love for Garden Fresh Market. At first some things seem a bit overpriced. But I realize the best thing is the enormous variety of products , flavors that you can't find in the majority of American product based grocery stores , and because many of the products aren't American - they're healthier with less sugar and preservatives. There are certain items they always have and it's fresh and not wilting - like bean sprouts or green onions. All they're missing is more Halal meats like Goat. And some African based grains and boxed products - i don't think I saw any. But they have everything else under the sun and it's fresh. read more

If I could give this store less than zero stars, I would. My experience was extremely unprofessional and upsetting. While using self-checkout, I accidentally selected the wrong item one that cost more than what I intended to purchase. Despite this, an employee named Gary accused me of stealing rather than calmly addressing the issue. By the way the item was a jalapeño. The interaction felt discriminatory and left me embarrassed and uncomfortable. This is not how customers should be treated, and management needs to address both the behavior and the lack of proper customer service training. read more

This has become the most expensive grocery store in the neighborhood, and it really feels like pure greed from the owner at this point. On top of that, a while ago I had an unpleasant conflict with staff when I was wrongly accused of breaking a bottle of some expensive wine, even though I wasn't even near that section. They couldn't prove it obviously, the owner and his management offered no apology. A lot of people, especially Eastern Europeans, still go there out of habit and because it's one of the few places where someone speaks their language. But all of my family and friends have stopped shopping here and switched to Woodmans and Aldi as prices are much cheaper there and overall service is better. Its a great big place! don't get lost, but if you do, just talk to someone, everybody is so nice and friendly here, and there is a great variety in store. If you are looking for something specific, you're likely to find it here, many culturally relevant brands and products. I've lived in the area for 25 years and this market in Buffalo Grove used to be the only one I shopped at. I was double charged for an item today and by the time I caught the double charge on my receipt I was in my car across the parking lot in 20 degree weather. I did not go back to get my $2.00 but, now reading other reviewers experiences at this store, it is apparent that this is a pretty common occurrence. This experience today, along with a very rude and short response by a product stocker when I asked a simple price question will probably keep me from shopping here too often, as there are many other good grocery stores in this area. read more

Garden Fresh Market is our local grocery store. We go here mostly for produce and staples like milk. They are always have a wide selection of produce. Their produce is always fresh and their prices are much lower than other grocery stores in the area. They also have a great bakery selection. My husband and I have gotten several cakes and pastries from their bakery and have not been disappointed. Garden Fresh Market also has a selection of Russian and Eastern European foods to cater to the local population. You literally have to pay me to go into this store - I went here with my family to get some caviar and they wanted a few other things. I counted like four people without masks before leaving the store hoping to get in the car and peel out like a bat out of hell. Instead I stood around pharmacy which is oddly closed to OTC product purchases on a Sunday evening (sucks because I need some probiotic tablets soon) and their staff and many people weren't wearing masks. The staff are rude., the clientele is rude. I'm not sure how the department of public health hasn't shut this trashpit of a badly controlled store down. Huge store with lots of selection and good prices. But, as others have pointed out -- the freshness of the items here can be a hit and miss at times. For fruits, vegetables, and meats -- they're usually between fresh to very fresh and an incredible buy. However, for prepackaged items, breads, dried goods, etc. I've run across items that have gone stale in days or ones that have expiration dates within days (inventory could be managed better since some items in the same area can have an expiration date weeks apart). With that said, the selection here is astounding. You can find pretty much any variety of any ethnic food you're looking for. Everything from European to Asian to Hispanic to Indian is covered. When items are on sale, they're pretty much the best prices you can find anywhere, allowing you to make high quality meals at unbelievable prices. Check the price which you are charged, especially if an item is on sale. The store computer often has the wrong price (and always higher). Today I was buying celery which was on sale for $0.99 per pound, as the tag clearly indicated. The cashier, who barely spoke English, charged me $1.99 per pound. When I pointed to her (or computer) mistake, she became rude, arrogant, and loud, and refused to adjust the price. I had to find somebody working in the store (who also spoke very little English), who made a picture of the tag, and went with me to the cashier. She still refused to change the price. They yelled at each other in Spanish for a while, finally another (again, Spanish speaking) man came and changed the price in the computer. The cashier remained rude to me all this time. read more

There are mostly Eastern European branded products with other European, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern & Asian foods as well. There is a good assortment of Local, American & Mexican staples. A very diverse fresh produce market with so many varieties to choose from. Our favorite part is the Deli and Bakery. Exceptionally nice people and personal service. Interesting place to visit. This store has so many issues. Lots of products are not in the system and require price checks (I usually just leave them at the register), they never fix them so I just avoid getting those items again. Be very careful with expiration dates and make sure to visually inspect items as they may be expired and/or spoiled. Meat prices are on par with Whole Foods where I always know I am getting good quality stuff. There are some positives: great selection of mineral water and ethnic food (really good selection). Hard liquor is sold in a little section after you pay for your groceries (kind of stupid). Customer service at registers is not very good. Make sure they don't overcharge you...anyway, find your trusted, selected items and stick with them. read more

They change expiration dates on items and use expired products for making deli! After every visit to this store I occasionally buy a few expired or bad food! But this market is really best for finding international grocery items that can be hard to find at other stores. Pelmeni, Plombir, Dadu, special European cakes, and other items are some of these that you would make a special trip to here or Fresh Farms on Dundee for. I really like Garden Fresh. I was getting up to Wheeling and Buffalo Grove frequently for a while and stopped there all of the time. The selection and variety of foods is amazing. Every ethnic group seems to be represented. Their vegetables are always fresh. Their bakery is outstanding.I can't comment on their meats or fish since I have never gotten any from there, but it all looks good. In fact, when you first walk in there is a European fish counter with several varieties of Caviar. (Some are really expensive - and there is a signed saying they don't accept returns...) I can't say enough about their bakery. Their fresh baked Challah, in my opinion, is better than those of other Chicago bakeries. They bake it fresh every day. If you are lucky enough, you might get there while they don't only have plain Challah. They also serve raisin, Sesame and Poppy seed versions. read more

This is my experience I had, you the reader must decide. I went to garden fresh in Buffalo grove. I went in for a few things. We are under a mask mandate. The people I saw working were half masked like teenagers who where there pants around there ankles. The customers just as BAD the store was busy yet most about 80 percent of customers had no mask. I even had to walk away from produce area when a lady was touching everything, but what grossed me out was she sneezed a couple of time without covering her non masked face. That was it for me. Russian cashier in pharmacy has face mask on today but NOT selling masks to non-Russians... and she wet sprayed the counter and credit card terminal with lysol saying "It's for your protection." .. She is going to cause a major malfunction on the credit card terminal because the terminal is not a waterproof device.. No other cashiers in the store behaved this way today. I used to like shopping here, but slowly that is being eroded. Over time, I've noticed prices are much higher than Walmart. I don't mind paying a little over to support the local guys, but for example today steak is $16/pound while Walmart is $11.47/pound. 'Cheap' brand tomatoes are $1.09 - Walmart own brand is $0.72. And they've downsized their rotisserie chicken - they're tiny! Same price though. Although they claim to be full service, they cater mostly to eastern europeans. So their choices of regular stuff can be small. And no drugstore items to speak of either. So I find myself now reluctantly shopping at Walmart mostly, with a few pieces picked up here. Third rate produce in a third world-like store. What an insult to customers. They're selling rotten and moldy produce. This is more like Garden Rotten instead of Garden Fresh. This place was never high quality, but in recent years it has declined to the point where you are actually paying money for decaying fruits and vegetables. Periodically, I would investigate the "rotten cart," as I like to call it, where a customer can purchase deeply discounted produce that is located all the way in the back of the produce department. It's usually hit or miss as a lot of the discounted produce is truly rotten. Now the entire store is like one big rotten cart. You also get the added bonus of bringing fruit flies home with you. Perhaps the diverse clientele who continue to shop here must not know the difference between moldy food and food that is edible. Most of the ones shopping here are Eastern European, which is not a bad or good thing. I only mention this because some, not all, do not seem to know how to carry themselves in public. On more than one occasion I saw two older Eastern European men coughing like if they had tuberculosis. They didn't even bother in covering their mouths. Instead they neglectfully covered the area in their germs exposing both the customer and the produce to whatever they had. It was disgusting. Also, they should learn how to smile. I've never seen such miserable looking people before in my life. Overall, it's just not a pleasant shopping experience at this store. The strip mall itself is dirty and run down. There is a creepy feel to it where you want to get in and get out as fast as possible. It overwhelmingly feels like you're in little Russia/little Poland. The area has taken a severe nose dive over the years, which is reflected by the types of stores and clientele. Recently, I even saw a homeless guy squatting by the front door with a cardboard sign indicating that he was homeless. Very sad. Whole Foods here I come! Update: Be careful in the parking lot. First of all, I'd just like to say that the fruits and vegetables are always fresh and reasonable priced; and the guys working the produce floor are always very helpful (5 stars and an A+ for them) . HOWEVER, pretty much all of the cashiers need attitude adjustments, thus I have chosen to give only 2 stars. Okay, maybe not all of them, but the young girls working the checkouts need to wipe their smug expressions off their faces while they work. I mean c'mon. If they aren't on their phones while checking your items, or talking to other workers WHILE THEY'RE SCANNING YOUR FOOD they're unapologetically glaring at you as if you are the antichrist. They act as if they have been sold into a labour camp and are being forced to work here. Seriously, I've seen happier workers digging graves at the cemetery. This is my place to go to. Today was bad. The lady that was up front by the cashiers was rude. I guess she's probably in charge up front. You expect that she would know how to bag.
