Service was not the fastest but wasn't bad for the CONSTANT flow of customers coming in the door. They kept my coffee cup full so that's a win in my book. Food came out in a reasonable time frame based on how busy they were. We ordered two omelettes and they were delicious!! If you're looking for a break from the same old same old, Jake's Restaurant is a great option. Just be ready to be here longer than your chain places.

She ordered an omelette and toast but she didn't realize potatoes don't come with it. So after the food came out she ordered a side of potatoes. They took forever to come out. So normally a diner would have hash browns and home fries already on the griddle but this place seems to put them on the griddle made to order which is probably why this place is always packed. On the other hand the food was great. I had my waffle with butter and their house made strawberry jam. I also ordered a half order of their biscuits and gravy. That was better than expected. The biscuit was soft and flaky and the gravy had the most meat in it that I've ever had. Bacon wasn't as crispy as last time but still great. Bacon can't go wrong. Especially deep fried bacon. My son had the chicken tenders and fries. I assumed the fries were meh because he didn't finish them. The chicken tenders were pretty good. Besides a few French fries we all finished all of our food. Service was ok. Had some moments when we were trying to get her attention for a bit but like I said it was a full house in there. Those cute one of a kind bird houses are for sale so make sure to purchase the one you have your eye on. A couple bought two of them while we were there. Only one tv here and best to sit at the counter if that's what you like to do while you eat. Lots of locals eating here and chit chatting. Great food at a relaxed pace.

So I asked her kindly if we could be placed at another table that didn't have sun. She had huffed and gave an annoyed looked. But, did change our table. I had told our waitress about it and we got an apology from the manager. Next we ordered the bacon Swiss burger and the pastrami Swiss burger. Omg so delicious and juicy. The pastrami was so flavorful. The burger was seasoned and you can still taste the freshness from the beef. It was a good lunch and that made up for the rude attitude in the beginning with the hostess.

Entrees included a traditional Reuben, a combo pastrami and corned beef on rye, a beef brisket in potato cakes and an asian salad. All were very good. We shared some fries, brisket came w apple sauce and au jus. Salad had grilled chicken and a savory dressing. My combo was good, but the rye bread was too thin and fell apart in my hand. Server was attentive, friendly, refilled water and brought plenty of napkins and wet wipes. Finished w a raspberry swirl cheese cake, also good, but appearance looked a little dry from the freezer. Definitely come back again.

This place is rated oddly high for such a crap-hole…read more Open the door and you'll be met with a dark, dilapidated room filled with stale and new cigarette smoke. There's broken or unplugged machines littering the room, and, as another reviewer pointed out, very unfriendly locals. We ate there when Butch was out of town, so I'm unable to judge the food based on his cooking but her cooking was absolutely horrendous. She had no clue how to even salt and pepper things properly - let alone even applying spices to make home fries... This was the absolute worse breakfast that I've had in the state. Would not recommend at all.

If you can overlook the outdated decor (total DIVE, circa 1950's), smoking on premises (only…read morerestaurant in CT that it is legal because it is considered a private club), the food is actually very good and prices are reasonable. This is a place where a non-member walks in and everyone drops their utensils, the music on the jukebox comes to a screeching halt and everyone in the place looks to see who you are...LOL. That was how we felt entering as non-members (apparently this small hole-in-the-wall has 1900 dues paying members?! I think the whole city of Norwich must be a member here!) There is a doorbell which you buzz to be let in, although there is signage outside, so you can easily find the place when driving by. I think my sister and I were a little put off and might have turned around and walked out, but that would have been too obvious and rude. (We also had sign-in to the guest book upon walking in and be approved by a paying member). Turns out, the owner Butch himself, was on site along with his sister, aka the cook. He apparently has been running the place for 40+ years and opens it every night starting at 11 pm through the early afternoon hours of 1 pm (he is a self admitted insomniac). This place clearly does not follow the standard rules! Jukebox was pumping with Elvis hits and other various songs from the 50's and 60's (Mr. Sandman, etc.). Food was surprisingly good...had a pancake (for $1.95!) and corned beef hash. My sister had a egg/bacon/cheese on a hard roll with a side of home fries. They also have a pool table which probably gets a lot of use in the late night hours of operation.
