Pretty good food & drinks. Met the young owner who was bar-tending that night. He went to school in San Diego, thus the Gaslamp name I'm gathering, nice. This is a super cool speakeasy hidden in the Kailua Pub. Call ahead for reservations and they will give you a password to enter just like prohibition. It's a bit warm in here but the live music and the dark mysterious ambiance makes this place ! The live music is up above where you hear the music, you know they are there, but hidden. It's loud but it works. Very small speakeasy with about 6 tables and bar seating is available but you must call for reservation due to limited seating. read more

This is the second time I've been to Gaslamp and they never fail to disappoint me. The first time was last year and they overcooked everything. Their Seafood Tower had mushy shrimp - I mean, how long do you have to cook a large shrimp to make it mushy and impossible to peel? We also ordered the Tomahawk steak "blue", which is practically raw. It came medium. Bruddah in the kitchen is a lousy cook. He over cooks everything. This time was my wife's 37th birthday and we thought we'd give Gaslamp another chance because of the live jazz, great drinks and dozens of oysters, all of which were spot on. None of those things require cooking, though, do they? I ordered the Steak Diane and my wife ordered some kind of fish. I like my steaks to be "blue", which is very, very rare. Like Ahi, just sear the outside and plate it. It came medium rare, which totally changes the texture of the meat. They did another one, which was perfect, but why make me go through the process of sending the first one back? My wife's fish was overcooked, too. She just didn't want to say anything because I had already complained about the steak and she was too embarrassed. I would have sent it back, but I didn't know why she wasn't eating it. I thought she was pissed at me. When I pay a $400 tab for drinks, appetizers and food, I at least want the food to be cooked the way it should be. The management needs to look into their kitchen staff and make some changes - like hire someone who knows how to cook food the right way, the first time. read more

After reading a few reviews that were less than stellar, we took the chance and so glad we did. The food, ambiance and service were absolutely amazing. Yes, it's on the pricey side but so what, you get what you pay for! Finally a place to get a cool, fun drink on the windward side. While I love grabbing beers at Kailua Town Pub or Grace and Growlers as much as the next guy, this place has the kind of strong cocktails you just need every once and a while. And considering an Uber to town costs like $40 each way, I didn't mind the $15-17 price tag on the menu. We went two days in a row last week after learning on Wednesday night that thurs-sun they have live jazz. Thursday jazz consisted of a sax player doing a solo set. The stage is set way above the bar area so it isn't super loud and we could still have a conversation without yelling. The vibe is super cool. A reservation is necessary (we did it online both times) since they will text you a "password" to give to the door person. The bar is actually at the back of the Kailua Town Pub main bar area under a "telephone booth" sign. It fits maybe 30 people, hence the need for a reservation and password. The drinks we had both days we're great. Tiki inspired, but not overly juicy. There are some limited food items as well, but we opted for pizza at the Pub after drinks! Made a reservation and tried to cancel because one of our members got a COVID positive test and they still charged us $200. We called to try to let them know and they basically said that excuse wasn't good enough and that they could not do anything about it. We have pretty strict rules on the island so it's very disheartening that they are not accounting for COVID protocols. read more

We have been here once and the food and service was amazing and we knew we would be going back since we live here now. We made reservations during the holidays and we were planning on taking our adult children and we walk ended up testing positive for Covid so I had to cancel the day before and we still got charged $105 for no show. I did my part by canceling so we would not spread our sickness. I contacted GasLamp and I also contacted the people that says they would be the ones And I didn't hear or receive a refund. I even emailed and attached the paper from the Medical office that said I was positive along with a take home test. What an experience! The food and ambiance is over the top. Tomahawk was definitely the best thing we tried. My only complaint would be that it has now ruined my favorite steak place for me. What can I say but out of this world! This place was fantastic from the time we met Lina at the telephone booth to the sit down at the table with Merit. The full staff of Rae, Clark And Nico were amazing. Merit had such a great sense of humor and was extremely knowledgeable on everything on the menu. When recommended drinks, Merit definitely lived up to his named and earned a Merit for his knowledge. The drinks and the food was pristine, never had anything better. Tucked away in the back of the Kailua Town Pub and Grill, you'll find a little hidden gem of a bar called Gaslamp. It's sort of a speak easy but in a traditional sense not really because anyone may have access. You don't have to be invited or know someone that can bring you in. But at the same time, the bar entrance isn't openly visible and you need to go through a fake telephone booth to get there. Reservations are highly recommended since it can fill up pretty quickly. If you're lucky and you walk-in, they may have some open seating at the actual bar. This is a great place to hold a private party for just around 20 people. The drinks here are exceptional and you should make sure you try a variety of them. They also serve food here from the Pub and Grill so you should ask your server for a recommended cocktail pairing. An intimate setting with only 10 tables or so. The ambiance takes you back in time in a dark space with book shelves, velvet accents, candle lit tables, and staff that pay attention to details. I loved their unique drinks from a table side smoked old fashioned, to a r Drink served with flames in the lime, to an exotic after dinner martini. Tonight we discovered a new favorite restaurant in Kailua. It is called Gaslamp. It is a speakeasy. You have to first walk into a dive bar called Kailua Town Pub and Grill. Then you walk to the back till you get to the telephone booth. Once there a hostess will come out and ask you for the "secret code" that was texted to us 2 hours before our reservation. The code tonight was "I'm here to place a bet on the One Trick Pony". After walking through the "telephone booth" we were seated in a very small but quaint restaurant (maybe 6 tables). It was very dark inside the restaurant but that made my drink (The Mother Mayhem) stand out all that more since it arrived on fire in a skeleton glass. Pretty cool. We started out with the Burrata Divina Salad. Very refreshing. For dinner I had the King Arthur which is a two course dinner featuring Beef Wellington and Snow Crab Claws soaked in a garlic butter sauce....to die for. My hubby had the Steak Diane which he loved as well. We also got the twice baked potato and the asparagus (yes we realized we overdid it) but the entire meal was fabulous, the service impeccable, and they even had a saxophone player playing in the loft right above us. In the menu there was a section about "who we are". I love what they wrote "The best food on the planet shared with an asshole is a shitty meal, and a shitty meal with a great companion is still a good time. They charged a cancellation fee of $70 which I understand if it was our fault but called the front in which she said I should be able to receive a refund. Called them again to follow up and the guy said "Covid is not a reason they would approve and that there's over 2000 requests because of Covid" how is Covid not a valid reason to cancel and be able to get a refund? Our friend got Covid and if we have it you expect us to come to your restaurant and give it to you? During these circumstances I believe it's not right for this restaurant to keep the $70 if we didn't even eat there. Hidden away in Kailua town, Hawaii's first real speakeasy really delivers on a unique experience. Their focus on craft cocktails and great beers is the best thing about the place. We had a few really well crafted drinks. They do take a while to be made, which they warn you about, but the place is small enough that service time is still reasonable. The food offerings are very limited and expensive, so you may want to have dinner plans before or after. We opted to eat elsewhere afterward. Reservations are a must, and you won't get in without it. The limited seating can make reservations tough too. They use Resy to handle that, which was very easy to use. They send you a unique password for your particular reservation a few hours ahead, so don't forget to check your phone before getting there. The place is suuuuuper dark though and we had to bust out the flashlights on our phones to even read the menu. I hope that's something they can address. I understand there's a certain atmosphere they're trying to create, but too dark to read the menu isn't good. read more

The staff were very kind and professional. The food truly was delicious, we started off with the charcuterie board and the presentation was excellent, tasted great as well! I ordered the Ribeye and Lobster, my buddy ordered the King Arthur. The 1st course to the King Arthur was delicious and perfectly portioned. My steak came out at a perfect medium rare, it tasted phenomenal and was exactly what I wanted. A perfect, classy, secluded oasis hidden amongst a raucous sports bar. Simply perfect! We seek out speakeasies wherever we travel - Budapest, New Zealand, San Diego, Los Angeles... everywhere. And now right here at home in sleepy Kailua. Gaslamp did not disappoint - it was enjoyable in every single way and we can't wait to return over and over again. Don't forget your secret password! That'll get you inside, and when you step through the portal, you are immediately transported to a different era and a world away from the bud lights and screaming local sports fans. I won't give too much away about the inside, but needless to say, the decor was impressive... I felt part Indiana Jones, part James Bond, and completely happy. This place was amazing! It is a speak easy in Kailua. Very limit tables so you need to make a reservation. When you make your reservation they give you instructions and a secret password to check in with. You enter into a gas lamp lit room and enjoy the entire experience. My husband and I were blown away. We both got dealers choice drinks where the bartender asks you what you like and creates a drink for you. We started with the prosciutto bruschetta which was outstanding then I got the lobster risottos and my husband got the king arther which was a 2 course dinner with snow crabs and beef Wellington. This is not a cheap meal by any means we payed close to $300 with everything and tip but it is an experience and the food was extraordinary. We did let them know that it was our anniversary and with the price we payed I thought they may bring out a special anniversary treat but they didn't but that is ok. We celebrated our anniversary by trying a new place (to us) after our normal go to was booked out. Gaslamp is located within a pub with no visible sign outside. If I didn't see a picture of the pub online we would have been circling for days. When you're make a res they actually take a credit card to hold your spot and let you know you could be charged $20 per person if you don't cancel within 24 hours of the res. They also text you multiple times to confirm you're coming, exhort you to dress up while you're there (men must wear collared shirts, women are asked to "dress to impress,") as well as give you a password to use while the hostess checks you in. Imagine our surprise when we got in (we went in the wrong way as again there are no signs so we traversed through the pub).. got to the swing doors named "telephone" which confused us as the name of the restaurant wasn't anywhere to be seen, to be met by a hostess who told us to close the door and step outside until she was ready for us. She took our temperature, asked to see both of our ID's then asked me for the password. Quite frankly it was quite a bit of hoops just to get in. Once in, imagine my surprise when the place was incredibly tiny and sat maybe 15 people and was darker than the night sky. Confused as to why someone had to dress up when you can't see anyone anyway lol. Our entrees were great and they do this thing when the server lights (or torches) your garlic on the plate but since it's so dark, we hadn't a clue what he was burning. Everything was ala carte so we ordered sides to go with our dishes which were good. If you go, make sure you have a flashlight or at least the one on your phone because you won't be able to see anything. About half way through the meal, the live sax began playing on the loft upstairs. Unfortunately it's so loud it kinda killed the vibe for us so much that we tried to hurry up the meal so we could leave quickly. The food was good but we honestly didn't feel welcomed or comfortable and trust me, we eat out a lot. The atmosphere felt slightly oppressive actually. Our normal go to is Hy's where the guests far outnumber the 15 spaces at Gaslamp yet everyone takes the time to greet, check in on you and make you feel at home. It was good to try something else and again, the food was nice but if you're paying $250* for the meal I had hoped it would come with a bit more than feeling like we were an inconvenience. Additionally and this is why I decided to post because I normally don't like to post negative reviews lately (we just don't return).. when the bill came, there was a 6.9% tax added to it (not an additional charge) and when we asked our server why it was different than the HI state 4.712% tax we were told that they had a new "cash discount" and if you paid in cash, you paid $2 less per entree. While I kinda get the discount idea, there wasn't any obvious posting anywhere about this and I am curious whether you can change the HI state tax percentage on your own. In my opinion it could have been a separate line item added on (after your made that clear to your guests). So lesson learned. Everyone has their own experience and feedback. While I'm bummed that this was ours for our 1st Anniversary, at least I had a wonderful date looking across the table at me. read more

Our overall experience at Gaslamp was enjoyable, although we were quite disappointed by a couple things. The atmosphere gives a definite "speakeasy" vibe: dark, cramped and loud. In fact, it was so dark that we had difficulty reading the menu. The service was fine, except that our waiter was not as helpful as he could have been. After he rattled off the specials , we mistakenly ordered the steak special he described, not realizing it was "The French Laundry " listed on the menu and not an additional special of the day. We certainly didn't realize it was 28 ounces (!) let alone a cut of Wagyu Tomahawk steak, when we asked if we could share it, explaining that we we are very small eaters who can't finish a lot of food. It's at that a point I feel our waiter should have clarified how big the steak was and suggested a more suitably-sized entree. (In retrospect, the 8 oz. Filet Mignon would have been just right for the 2 of us.) I was quite surprised to see the gigantic cut of meat, presented with such marvelous fanfare that we had to film it. It was incredibly delicious and definitely a worthwhile choice for those who know exactly what they are getting. I was even more surprised when I got the check and saw that the steak was $195. While I would gladly order it on an occasion where I had one more person to share it with, this was not that occasion. It was my mistake to not ask for clarification about size and price, but I do regret that our waiter did not see fit to inform this was not an appropriate choice for two people who said they could not eat that much food. Our other disappointment was with the music. We were interested in this establishment primarily because they featured live jazz, and the food and drinks were only of secondary interest to us . We were told Gaslamp had live jazz, so we were very sad to find out that it would not start until half an hour before we were required to leave. I was even more disappointed that it was glorified jazz saxophone karaoke; the musician relied heavily on his backup tracks and played only sporadically during the short time we were able to listen to him. We did reach out privately to Gaslamp via email to share our thoughts, and in response, received a terse and completely unapologetic lecture about why the steak was such a good value and how expensive live entertainment is. It was made unequivocally clear to us that they had no trouble at all booking all their reservations, sounded quite proud of it, and clearly showed no desire to take any of our feedback into consideration. Do not believe the hype of this place. If you are looking for an outstanding steak dining experience from a locally owned business, try the Cutlery in Kaimuki. But if you want the Speakeasy experience and a sense of exclusivity, Gaslamp is a good choice. Just don't go for the music, and don't bother learning the secret passcode they text you beforehand, you won't even be asked for it. Ultimately, I do not believe we will ever be tempted to return to Gaslamp. We dine out frequently at fine restaurants and prefer those that are warm, welcoming, friendly, and have impeccable service to accompany their delicious food. And some of them even have live jazz. read more
