Update: the food is still as tasty as ever but I think they may have downsized their portions to half of what they were last time. Last time we went I was starving and still couldn't finish my food and I was just like kinda hungry tonight and we both finished off our food and are still hungry. I guess maybe next time we should order three orders of it but with the kind of shitty service we got I don't know if it's worth driving out to Waukee just to order double the food so I don't leave hungry. The hostesses were also like super awkward and weird. Lol This is disappointing because we were really rooting for this place. But I guess it is in Waukee so makes sense... The food at this place is very interesting. They have a deBurgo Poutine. The flavor is delicious. I would love for the deBurgo to be an option on everything because it was so delicious...the place mostly has tall bar tables but they do have a few short or low tables. You are not able to make a reservation unless you are a party of 10 or more which is not friendly if you want a short table. I however called and ask if there was anyway I could get a short table for 2 and they did hold it for me. I was glad they would accommodate. Great place to meet up with friends for a lunch. Our waiter Adrian (prob not spelled right) was awesome. He was a great waiter. Upon sitting water and silverware and menus were delivered. When the rest of my party joined me he quickly returned with our drinks. He "attempted" to take our order a few times but we were way too busy chatting. So when we finally looked at the menus (totally out fault for the delay) he came right over and took our orders. Food came out quickly-granted we were there after the lunch hour rush. My friend had the crab cakes and said they were amazing. I had the buttermilk chicken sandwich that comes with coleslaw on it. The fries with the garlic dipping sauce were awesome. The iced tea was so weak it was transparent and I waited a long time for a refill. The grilled chicken pita and truffle fries were delicious but $18 (which includes the tip) is WAY too expensive for a weekday lunch. Gastro is a fun restaurant. I've never had a waiter here that is bad. The inside is beautiful and the decor is nice. The food is delicious. I personally get the Chicken Pita. Pitas aren't usually my favorite but everything inside the Pita goes so well together. My favorite thing about Gastro is the Sweet Potato Fries. They are to die for!! So disappointed. I was really excited to try this place, especially because of the vegan and vegetarian options they have, but I can't remember the last time I was so disappointed in a restaurant. First, upon entering, nearly 10 minutes went by before we were even acknowledged, but they were busy so I was willing to let that slide. We were promptly seated and out waiter was by in good time to take our order--we ordered two mixed drinks, fried Brussels sprouts, pork chop with a side salad and a jackfruit sandwhich. Thirty minutes went by before our drinks arrived. Dinner arrived over half an hour after that (more than a one hour wait total). The side salad and appetizer never made an appearance until after we were nearly done with dinner, and only after we said to just forget it. Granted, they were comped--good thing, considering the Brussels sprouts were BLACK. My boyfriend liked his pork chop, I was disappointed in the jackfruit sandwhich--it had no real barbeque flavor and was totally overpowered by the slaw, which had an odd Asian flavor to it. Before coming, I was excited to try their "coffee and donuts" dessert, but there was no way I was going to wait another half hour or longer for that. It was such a bummer to spend $70 on a dinner only to be completely disappointed and dissatisfied. What a great new addition to Waukee!!! Very familiar with their food truck and the restaurant did not disappoint! We started with the steak deburgo poutine, which is an interesting and delicious take on two classic dishes in one. We also couldn't go without the fried Brussels sprouts - INCREDIBLE! For dinner, our table enjoyed the chicken pita, bacon jam burger, crispy fried chicken sandwich and the beet salad - all to rave reviews. Our server Julie was highly attentive and made sure we had drinks flowing all night. This place is new, and as such, a number of folks are trying to check it out, so expect some longer than normal wait times to be seated. We went this past Saturday night. They haven't been open very long and they were very busy with it being a weekend. The staff were very friendly and accommodating to us and our almost three year old. I ordered a drink from the bar ( coal miners daughter). It was very, VERY good. It had Templeton Rye, honey, lemon and lavender liquor. I would go back just for this drink! We then ordered the fried baby bell as an appetizer . It was beautifully presented and delicious as well. For the entree, I ordered the bacon Bourbon Burger. OMG!! Hands down the best burger I have had in years. Beats zombie and all of the other locals hands down. Quality, fresh ingredients, great tastes and friendly service. I'm so glad that they opened. I recently ordered the chicken pita sandwich. It was tons of sauce and no chicken. The worst part? When I lifted it up, there was a hair underneath. I didn't eat it. Luckily, I had ordered a side of macaroni (in a separate dish). It was good except, there was very little macaroni. Just all ham chunks. The bruschetta app came with 4 little mini toasts, small drop of cheese, and tons of salsa. The waitress offered to get us more mini toasts. Not impressed with the food. The truffle fries were just fries from a bag with some truffle oil. Nothing to write home about or waste my calories on. I ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos and they were frankly blah! Small piece of fish covered with a glob of mango salsa, avo crema, and cabbage but too much. Made them sloppy and gross. We have been to Gastro twice and have had amazing experiences both times. I would recommend the fried chicken sandwich, comes with amazing slaw on the sandwich and then add aioli on the side for the sandwich and fries. Date night and we decided to try a new place. We got there about 5:30 on a Saturday night. It was busy, but not a lot of people waiting. The hostess told us the wait would be about 35 minutes. I was hesitant since we had theater tickets for 7:30. The hostess said if we didn't mind we could sit at a little table by the bar and she would wait on us. She also warned that it was getting busy, and she still had her hostess functions. We were good with this and sat by the bar. She gave us a few minutes to peruse the menu, although my husband had been studying it for days. We ordered. My husband got the steak de burgo poutine and I got the Grub burger with truffle fries and garlic aioli. We ordered water and she brought us a big bottle and a couple of glasses. We drank our water and did some people watching. We got our food about twenty minutes after we ordered. The poutine was great. Good chunks of steak & cheese curds and a creamy, buttery sauce. The fries were still crisp despite being covered. The burger was great, and the truffle fries had a grated, tasty cheese we couldn't place. The garlic aioli was great! I wanted to lick the little ramekin but decided to keep my dignity. The hostess did a good job. She offered to bring the check right away so we could settle up as soon as we were done. We were doing great on time and said there was no rush now. Overall, the food was great, the service was good and we are thankful that they were so willing to take care of us. Definitely recommend a visit. It started filling up by the time we got our food, but they seemed to be seating people pretty quickly. Prices were good. We both ate for $25 before tip. We were planning on going to dinner with my parents this evening. So I thought about trying something new. Between the four of us, we can never decide. So there was our choice right there, I went with her suggestion. We showed up around 5:30 on a Friday night. From 3-6PM they have happy hour. We all ordered items off their happy hour menu. They aren't just appetizer items on the happy hour menu either. They have burgers on the happy hour menu. My parents ordered the poutine and a Grub Burger for their entrees. My husband and I ordered the Grub Burger and the Bacon Jam Burger plus an order of poutine to share. I ordered sweet potato fries as my size. The poutine was very good, nice big chunks of ooeey gooey cheese. The burgers were good. My sweet potato fries were very over cooked, very dark. I asked for a new order and had one shortly which were much better. I ordered an Ace Pineapple ale and my mom had a sprite. Our total bill was $48.00. Holy Cow!! The restaurant is clean. The bathrooms are ok, they were clean and had adequate supplies. Overall the restaurant is loud, we had a hard time talking. My parents are older and have a hard time hearing, that was and the fries were my only complaint about our visit. I will be suggesting the happy hour to my girl gang that does happy hour once a month. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the server's name. He did a great job. Visiting town and met up with friends on a Friday night. While we were ok with a more leisurely meal, the whole experience lasted 3 hours. Everything was delayed- drinks, appetizers, mains, and then we sat there and waited for the check for ages. The restaurant clearly could not handle seating the patio and the inside and the special event room. Rather than preemptively making us aware of how slow the service was going to be, our table was ignored and avoided. Even the owner came to the table with an insincere and halfhearted excuse that the party room was full. Bad business. Great place to go with friends for craft beer and great specialty food! Went on a Friday night at 7pm - reservations taken and recommended especially weekend evenings. It was busy, the place is not large but was full. There is a party room that can be reserved as well. The craft beer menu is impressive - not overly long, but definitely satisfying with a great variety. We enjoyed a few different selections and ordered the bone marrow with crustinis and the poutine with steak, fries, gravy and curds for starters. Both were very good and portions were good for sharing with our group of four. We ordered our entrees after the small plates arrived - steak frites (upgrade to truffle fries with pesto aioli): absolutely delicious! A perfect portion - the gravy with the streak was so good and the pesto aioli was my favorite with the truffle fries. The steak was grilled to perfection! Another had the pork chop with mashed garlic potatoes and grilled vegetables - asparagus. The chop was very good topped with an applesauce and served over the potatoes. Someone ordered the grub burger - so juicy and filling on the bun served with fries. And another person ordered the fried chicken sandwich topped with coleslaw (a little spicy) and dill pickles and served with fries. We all upgraded our fries to truffle fries and tried the garlic aioli and the pesto aioli. Our server was very attentive to our needs and friendly. The atmosphere is perfect for friends going out with TVs playing sports around the venue, a bar with seating, high top and regular tables. Disappointed with our experience this evening. Server was friendly enough, but we waited 40+ minutes for our food, and after continuing to wait, we had to ask our server to box it up for us and get it to go instead of eating in the restaurant. On top of this, several other tables who were sat after us got their food BEFORE us. Even their appetizers and dessert. To top it off, the server never acknowledged our wait or apologized. Really Good Food My wifemate and I were in Gastro for lunch today. We had the Grub Burger with fries and the Veggie Tacos with sweet potato fries. The food was really good. Great flavor. Went for the soft opening, and again for the grand opening. One thing is for sure- Gastro Grub and Pub is a WONDERFUL addition to Waukee! All of the food truck favorites are on the menu (mmm.... truffle fries), as well as a ton of new menu items. The salmon burger was to DIE for! Also, if you're looking for one of the best appetizers you have got to try the fried babybels.. so good! They also have a great variety of beers, wine, and cocktails. I also tried a bite of my cousins chicken flatbread, and my goodness.. so good. Definitely recommend!
