We've been to this place back in 2017 and it was the best Mediterranean food place we found in Fremont, we would come to eat in with our parents as the food was delicious and everyone loved it. My Bestie was fond of Shawarma (lamb wrap), it used to be something special! A couple days ago he went there to have a nice portion of enjoyment to mark Friday evening and it was a terrible experience - both service and the food quality was unexpectedly low. First, they would make a mess serving web-orders first and ignoring customers waiting in the room, then they would ask you to repeat your order several times, making you wait 15-20 minutes. The staff was trying to make a good impression, but the overall process was unorganized and chaotic. That's not all - at home, when we opened the food it was strange-looking and tasted and smelled terrible, meat tasted like being previously frozen, warmed up, but not grilled or heated up - we threw most part of it and we had to take the trash to the dumpster straightaway because the odor was terrible. My Bestie says he will never come there again. Which is sad, as that was a good place once. I'm putting one star because I cannot put zero. read more

WOW! Their food here is AMAZING! The service: The Service here was super fast! I came during lunch on a Monday, so around 12:30. They lady who took my order was very friendly and had a smile :), she offered me desert, drink, extra meat etc. I declined but a she's a great sales person! The last two times I went here staff stressed out, short staffed, a Persian lady yelling and running around like she's on drugs, talking about how stressed out she is. Food was slapped on a plate, the Greek salad was only lettuce not even tomatoes. Found this place on a drunk stooper in college. They have the freshest wraps and rice plates. All the meat is cut to order right in front of you and the taste is unbelievable. My personal favorite is the garlic chicken wrap. Ask for an extra hot sauce. I don't have a clue what mix that's in it but it's off the hook. The yogurt sauce with some naan is just perfect. Gaters is somewhat of a hole in the wall, a small shop sitting in between Barnes and Nobles and Petsmart. With a Hooters nearby among other restaurants and lunch choices, you can easily overlook this place. But my sister recommended the spicy gyro from this place and I decided to try it for the first time not so long ago. Mind you, this was my first time ever having gyros. Warm, moist pita bread stuffed with lamb, slap on lettuce, tomatoes and onions with yogurt sauce and you've got one tasty gyro. The yogurt sauce complements the entire wrap really well. You can still taste the marinated flavors of the meat despite the strength of the sauce. The sliced purple onions can be somewhat overwhelming but it gives the wrap a nice kick. Needless to say, I have been back several times now. The service has always been great for me. I have found the owner to hang out in front of the shop many times but he always make his way back in to get my order done. There is never any variation to the flavor of the spicy gyro, which is great. It's perfect for me every time. The one problem I ran into was when it came to order a gyro meal. It comes with fries (I've had better) and a drink. They forgot to give me my drink once when I ordered to-go. Didn't have this problem when I sat in once. But if you ever order a meal to-go, make sure you get your drink because they will not remind you about it. Of course, I have no way of knowing whether this is what gyros are supposed to taste like until I try another gyro place. I've seen plenty. It's just a matter of making my way there to try it out. Been here twice already and thought they were due for a review! I went last night with the family and ordered 4 "#3's"...which is basically a Mediterranean style chicken/rice dish, with salad on the side (their salad consists on finely chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions, I believe), hummus on the side, and pita bread. I also ordered three piece of baklava. In total, we paid just over $42.00. A good value for dinner for four adults. The gentleman who served us is very friendly and always has a good attitude, as does the rest of their staff. Additionally, we only waited less than 5 minutes for all of the food to be prepared and packaged, which was extremely efficient. I been hitting this place up since I was in high school. I've always got there chicken wrap spicy and it never let's me down. The chicken has so much flavor and is so moist then with the lettuce and onion and tomato it just tops it off! I got all my brothers to try it as well and they loved it. Happy to have found a Mediterranean food joint to satisfy my craving! Gater's Kabob Hut has been around for a while, but I've never stopped to try it. My first experience here was good - food came out fast and the service was friendly. My brother and I each ordered a platter, one gyro and one sliced steak. For $8.99 it comes with meat of your choice, basmati rice, hummus or yogurt sauce, and pita bread. You can choose to make it spicy, which I recommend to do if you like a kick to your food. The meat was a bit salty and over seasoned in my opinion, but went well with the salad, rice, and everything else. The yogurt sauce was great too! Will definitely be back to try their other items. Amazing mediterranean food! GREEK SALAD: Their Greek Salad was fresh! It comes with Tzatziki sauce but I thought it tasted great with the olive oil and lemon that they used! VEGGIE GYRO: Their gyro was hot fresh and it hit the spot! The falafel in their gyro wasn't too salty either (like it normally is at other places) it was perfect! HUMMUS: Their hummus is homemade and creamy! None of that sour processed stuff at the store! Customer Service: The owner is so friendly and sociable! She is very helpful and very accommodating! I live in Union City and love Mediterranean food. I've gone almost all the rated places on yelp and I must say that Gater's in my opinion has the best food. It's just a little more flavorful and maybe spicy. I was a little taken aback when I saw that Mr. Kebab or Zam Zam Grill was actually higher rated than Gaters. So I had to write a review for them. It seemed only fair cause they do have better tasting food. Maybe they get docked for the size of the place or the comfort of the dining area. But just on the food alone. I've been going to Gater's here and there for the last couple years. I really enjoy their food, and also the fact that I can determine my own level of spiciness, if you will. I have never particularly dined at the actual restaurant, however myself and my coworkers have many times gotten food to go. The food is always really delicious and never skips a beat in my enjoyment. Where I work, we have even had food catered from here, they were on time, helpful, and the food was very fresh! I love that they can cater to our vegetarians as well. I can't really see why anyone would complain about the food because every time I've had it, it's been amazing! This place is my "go-to" for many reasons. First...the HUMMUS is seriously finger licking good. Like no joke, I use my fingers to get the last bit from the container. My bff and I discuss the hummus each and every time we devour it, and constantly compare it to other brands and restaurants lol there is none as good. I've bought it a few times on its own just to snack, or for dinner parties. So...go there...if not just for the hummus! my roomies favorite dish there is the chicken plate. She is a rice queen and loves theirs. So that's saying a lot! My favorite is the steak wrap, extra spicy. Yummmmm. Fremont is full of places to go for gyros, wraps, hummus and so on and so forth, and I've honestly given the majority of them a try, since I'm a lifelong Fremont resident, but always, always I go back to Gaters. Finally got to use my Groupon. The first time I was there during Ramadan, and they did not accept it. Frustrated but went back later this month. Price wise, okay. Fair? Not expensive, not cheap. But of course, with Groupon it was a better deal. After reading all the reviews, I was a bit worried about the food I was going to get. But it turned out to be fine. Not as good as the five star review says, but nothing too bad that made me discard the food or give a review below 3 stars. I think this is average Middle Eastern food. Good portion with good amount of meat. Especially my Garlic Chicken Gyro. My combination salad had less meat than expected, but still okay. Meat was a bit dry. Gyro's flavor was much better. Ordered Falafel as well. Fresh fried (I watched him making the "balls"), and not in a round shape. Taste was okay, nothing impressive. So for the food I ordered, Garlic Chicken Gyro, 3.5 stars; combination salad, 3, falafel, 3 stars. In terms of service, well, there was kinda of chaos. They seemed to have some catering order to fulfill so the two people there were flying here and there to take orders and prepare food at the same time. Though at the moment there were not many customers. It took sometime for them to take my order then make it. Well, I noticed that there may be some chance they misplaced the order, so I double checked with them. True. They put another couple's order in my takeout bag. But he got the right order, just misplaced the two. A kind reminder may save your frustration of misplaced food. But their attitude was good. Been coming here for years and the food WAS great. Tonight that all changed. Everything in the chicken plate was disgusting. Nothing tasted like it used to. The chicken was dry and shredded with no flavor. It kind of had a bitter tinge. The rice was flavorless and flat. The hummus was runny and kind of sweet. First time I didn't finish my plate. Downhill...and going downer. On a positive note: the food's still decent, maybe even a notch above average, and the staff are always pleasant. However...the place has changed ownership/management so many times I can't keep track, and each time a little part of me dies as the taste or quality diminish. When I first ate here many years ago (not sure which iteration of ownership this would be, but they had the really good flatbread and those peppermint candies) it was hands-down absolutely the best falafel wrap I'd ever eaten anywhere, period. Bit by bit, recipes changed, ingredients were swapped out, the baklava was dropped from the falafel wrap combo...and with the proliferation of other Mediterranean eateries as of late, Gaters just doesn't have the allure it once did. No worse than others, certainly...but generally not a whole lot better these days either. It's still my preferred destination if I happen to be within a block or two around lunchtime, but I'm no longer driving three miles specifically for their falafel wraps. read more

OK, I scan the market for Shawermas (Gyros) ... I came across gaters and I have to say that compared to many other shawerma places, it is acceptable. It's an ok fix for the shawerma craving. I have to say that the owners of this place has changed like maybe 4 times in the past 7 years and the quality of the sandwich changes with each ownership. As another reviewer mentioned, yes they don't add tahini, which beats me. What is a shawerma without Tahini? The meat is often too spiced and a little too hard, but like I said it is a good fix for a shawerma craving. I fill up on good shawermas when I go back home :) read more

Overall, the gyros and french fries are pretty good. As for the gyros, they have one of the best that I've tasted so far. Customer service is good. For the most part, they are friendly. however, I am disappointed because the sign on the door says they close at 9:30p. But yet there has been two incidents that I've encountered a contradiction. Just today, I arrived at 8:50 and the guy told me they're closed already. WTH? If they want to close at 9, then please change the sign. So I have to take off some stars due to this issue. Either I chose an off day to try this place for the first time or the other reviewers don't know what good Mediterranean food should taste like. I ordered the chicken gyro and a side of dolma. Opened up the dolma first. Could tell right away it wasn't fresh. Probably from the day before. The rice inside was dry and the grape leaves didn't tear well when I bit in. Flavor of the spices was pretty good though Moving on to the chicken gyro I knew it was bad the second I opened it. The inside wrapper was dripping with grease/oil!! The chicken was spiced well but the texture was chewy and super dry. Can't tell if the tzathiki sauce didn't have good flavor or they just didn't put enough on the gyro. You can see it but not taste it. And to make it even worse the pita bread was terrible. Worst I've ever had. Dry and flavorless. To sum it up, this place is a hole in the wall in a very busy shopping center that serves up decently priced greasy, unfresh food. At least they are quick about it read more

I have only been here once after a long bike ride. Considering that I was starving, I thought the food hit the spot, but the flavors were between a 3-4 star rating. Since I have only been here one time, I would have to come back & try it again so that I can give it a more accurate & fair review in the future. We ordered the Greek salad, combination platter,steak gyro, hummus, & we bought 3 bottles of water...almost $40. We should have omitted the Greek salad as it was plain & had no flavor. It tasted like veggies with oil (either romaine or iceberg lettuce, can't remember), but the picture looked yummier than it actually was. The combination plate was better. I think it had chicken & steak with yellow rice (yum), small side of hummus & veggies. The steak gyro was the best which came with a small side of fries. Like everyone said on yelp, the hummus came with a small side of pita bread, & it was good and tasted fresh. My little complaint is that the chairs looked like they could be replaced. My other little complaint is that we asked them to split the gyro into 3 parts, but they wrapped it in foil and split it into only 2 sections. When I picked up the gyro, I noticed that the section where they cut the gyro had tiny pieces of foil in the food that I had to pick out. There were veggies & some kind of sauce the veggies, so I am sure I ate some of the small pieces of foil. read more

We were delighted with our experience! The woman at the cashier was helpful and answered any questions we had. We had a Groupon - caution: could only be redeemed via phone instead of printing it. Which is okay, considering we are a technologic world now-a-days! We had the gyro sandwich and gyro plate. The sandwich was good! Loved the flavor of the meat and the texture of the pita. Altough, there didn't seem to be enough tzatziki sauce in the sandwich... Paired it with fries--this order is enough for one person. The gyro plate was good too! Also, enough for one person. The salad and 1 pita for this wasn't anything special. The pita for this wasn't as large and was flat. But liked that enough sauce came on the side. Again, a huge fan of their gyro meat!
