I needed to let others know about my experience at Gaters on 5/9/17, so here comes my lengthy post. Let me start off by first stating that I was beyond excited to try Gaters for the first time based off of Yelp. I walked in at 8pm and there was a cashier and two cooks behind the counter. I was looking over the menu and the chicken salad sounded super appetizing. My friend ordered her gyro salad and some french fries. I told the cashier that I wanted the chicken salad and she says, "No chicken"... I'm pretty sure I had the stupidest look on my face when I asked her, "What do you mean no chicken?" and she said, "There's no chicken." While I'm looking over the menu again to see what else I can eat, I hear one of the cooks say, "I can cook some more chicken" to the cashier and the cashier doesn't say anything to me. So I just continued to look over the menu again and the cook repeated himself again, "It's the same chicken as the kabobs, I can just cook it for her if she wants it." Again, the cashier says NOTHING to me, so I started to get fed up and said that I would get the steak salad. Out of curiosity, I asked, "What kind of meat is gyro meat?" She said, "Lamb" and then I ordered some hummus. She repeated the order back to us: One gyro salad, one steak salad, fries, and hummus. Total came out to $28 with tip.
While sitting and waiting for our food to be made (The restaurant is small like a bedroom so the food prep/kitchen area is literally 5 feet away from the tables), my friend tells me, "Oh I wonder when they're making your food.. I just saw the cook slicing meat only from the only one rotating (which we assume is gyro meat w/ lamb)." Fast forward to when we get our food...
We open the salad boxes and they're exactly IDENTICAL. So we asked the cook, "Which one is lamb and which one is steak?" He goes, "Uhhh, THAT ONE!" I was genuinely confused by now, the boxes were unlabeled and the meats were IDENTICAL... I told him that I had a food allergy to lamb and that I can't consume it at all. My friend offers to take a bite of both meats and they were the same meats. Friend said, "Tastes like regular gyro meat - with lamb". At this point, I was asking why they would take the same meat and put it on a salad which is supposed to have two different meats. No one could answer me - I then asked the cashier, "Remember, you told me that gyro meat is lamb?" and she goes, "Oh no, I never said that." I was completely dumbfounded - by this time, I was furious. NO ONE KNEW WHAT WAS WHAT AND HOW IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SERVED. So enough arguing with people who had no idea what to do... I asked to speak to the manager and the cashier goes, "She'll be here tomorrow morning." I told her, "No thanks, I will speak to her TONIGHT so please give me her number."
I got a hold of the owner, Maha (I believe is her name). Thankfully she picked up and I had to tell her the experience I had at her restaurant. She tried to explain to me that they had 3 different types of gyro meat (beef, beef and lamb, and just lamb). I had to explain to her that if that's the case, why would the cook slice meat from only one meat stand... Better yet, where were the other meats he was supposed to switch out? We had two different orders - one steak and one lamb gyro. My friend clearly watched him slice meat from only ONE meat stand so either way - it's both steak or both lamb (not the right order we placed). Anyways, I told her that her cashier had no idea what she was doing and that I asked for a chicken salad first and they "ran out". By this time, the owner was completely confused and said that they shouldn't run out of chicken. (OOPS! Cashier was lying to me again). The owner apologized and while I was on the phone, my friend already got a refund from the COOK and not the cashier (cause once again, she had no idea what was right and what was wrong). Apparently the cashier is new, but still. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NOT DIFFICULT - you don't deny them food if you're not the one cooking it and the cook says it's ok that he can make more chicken. Also, customer says order may be wrong - double check it rather than arguing with me that, "That's not what I said - gyro is not lamb." (You clearly stated it was earlier when I asked you.) Owner also offered another meal on the house but I could not stand how unorganized the restaurant was. read more
