First time here and I'm impressed! Was greeted at the door then when I was browsing the menu I told the greeter it was my first time there. He enthusiastically told me about the menu and their best sellers. I opted for the "Cool Ranch Rider". It's delicious. I opted to not have the cool ranch Doritos on the sandwich. This is a fantastic little sub shop, just a couple miles from the beach! It's a little hidden in a small strip mall, but it's worth the hunt. The sandwiches are so good, and the staff is super friendly. There are a few spots to sit to eat in, but everything is great to go. I've must have called a dozen times in the last several months and not one time did they ever pick up to take an order. What a rip off. Ordered a beach sandwich. They thought one piece of turkey one slice of ham and one slice of roast beef for $10 sandwich. Absolutely ridiculous. I would never eat here again and would tell anybody you'll get more value at going to Jersey Mike's. I usually support local businesses but this one I feel like I was just ripped off at it would never eat here again. Basically you pay $10 for three slices of meat bread a couple of veggies and mayonnaise. Absolutely horrible. read more

This little sub shop has long been our go-to for sandwiches when en route to or from the beach, but in truth we sometimes go out of our way just to eat here. But let's back up a second--why make a point of visiting Gateway when there's a Publix in South Pasadena that makes perfectly serviceable sandwiches that can, furthermore, be ordered and paid for entirely online, thus obviating the need for any pesky conversations with any pesky fleshbag humans? And you can't even pick up a 20-pound tub of cat litter or an entire rotisserie chicken at Gateway, either! Pshaw! But the truth is that Gateway's sandwiches blow Publix sandwiches out of the water as if they were actual submarines rather than the figurative ones they're named for using well-honed torpedoes of flavor, all whilst dodging the Publix depth charges of mealy tomatoes and inexplicable cucumbers. I feel like this analogy isn't really working all that well and deeply want to back out of it now. The signature innovations here are two: firstly, instead of following the tried-and-true meat-cheese-veggies order of battle, Gateway piles meat, cheese, veggies, and then *another* layer of meat folded in at the very top that holds everything together. So your sandwich looks like some kind of expectant tot all tucked away with visions of sugarplums dancing in its head awaiting the arrival of Santa. But there is no Santa; there is only YOUR TEETH. The effect of this is that you can chomp down the whole sandwich without little bits of lettuce and tomato or whatever flying everywhere and making a damn mess. The second innovation is the addition of crushed potato chips to many of the signature sandwiches (you can also have them added to any sandwich you want, of course, you maniac), which means a salty, crunchy surprise to vary up the texture. The people here are also super nice and sometimes give my son a free cookie if he answers the cryptic riddles that they pose him. One final piece of advice: get the Brycer. Yeah, there are some good offerings elsewhere on the menu, and chances are you're going to like whatever you get, but there's really nothing quite like the Brycer. It's spicy and messy and sublime. I'd suggest getting it toasted without mayo (it really doesn't need mayo). It may cause you to ascend to another plane of existence in which people have evolved beyond the need for words and instead just communicate using sandwiches. read more
