The interior decor and menu design were deceiving. You'd think that you would receive high-quality dining food for the hefty price that the restaurant boasts.... yet, my tastebuds and experience here were honestly a bit underwhelming. This restaurant is not incredible but it also is not terrible. It was an okay American cuisine "looks like and feels like fine dining but not actually fine dining quality" restaurant. APPETIZER: 6/10 Campechana - I'm not a fan of spiciness, so I barely touched this dish. It was delicious though and the chips were the perfect salty combo. I do still recommend ordering this dish, since it was a delightful and shareable concoction. MAIN COURSE: 7/10 Prime Burger - The meat was cooked to absolute tenderness and every bite was juicy! The server and kitchen were attentive to my dairy allergies (which I expected nothing less in such fine dining). I rated only 7/10 because I felt like there was something missing to the taste... This burger probably tastes better with the sauce and everything on it. NOTE: Due to my dairy and nut allergies, this restaurant does not have a wide selection that cater to my dietary restrictions. A lot of items on the menu have either dairy or nuts and I was told that the items aren't modifiable. SERVICE: 10/10 Attentive and we were seated immediately on a Wednesday evening. Would I return? Probably, since I work nearby, and I want to try their happy hour menu. Would I recommend this restaurant to others? Honestly, this restaurant was just... okay. Not bad or terrible. Just okay to me. New spot in the area. I think it fills a slot of cuisine that we don't have out this way. It definitely has potential and I'm excited to see where it goes. Let's get into the specifics: Service was friendly. Kitchen was slow. I suspect this will improve in coming months. It has a throwback Bennigan's, rustic bar and grill type feel to the decor. There was very loud traditional country music playing, which I'm not a fan of and I don't think will be appreciated by most clientele. I would suggest changing the genre or at least turning it down. East coast oysters (4/5)- They were good, but there's only 4. I've never been to a place that didn't serve oysters by the half, dozen, or a la carte. So I'm not sure why 4 was chosen. The waiter even had to warn us before ordering so I suspect others have complained. I think they should at least put 6 even if it means upping the price a bit just to avoid confusion. Poblano soup with lump crab (5/5)- Delicious soup du jour! Flavorful had a good amount of crab. Almost had a gumbo like taste. I enjoyed it very much. Gatsby's Chicken- Great portion size. Two full breasts. The chicken is breaded and topped with tomato and a sauce. The mashed potatoes were good but could use a bit of salt. The broccolini was also tasty. Crab Cake Sandwich- Bread was nice and hot. Crispy on the edges yet moist. It was served open face so I decided to only eat half of the bun to reduce carbs. The crab cake had plenty of real crab, but could have been slightly crispier considering it's on a sandwich. Served with fries. I enjoyed and would order again. Overall it was a good night out. They have a few kinks to work through but I'm hopeful. There's reasonably priced items on the menu so I suspect this will become a go to spot for families. read more

Came by one evening during the week. Business was slow, but service is on top. Friendly host, friendly service, friendly establishment. Plenty of parking shared with other businesses. Patio is great to be out on. Really good service too. Deviled egg appetizer was on fire and we ate them up. Crab cake sandwich...ditch the chunk of iceberg and try arugula for flavor and aesthetically pleasing. A little more spice in the remoulade would be better, but crab was good and fresh. Husband had the regular cheeseburger and fries, again with the chunk of iceberg, some other type of greens should be used for this level of dining. Other than this, it was fantastic! I had been here before when it was Acadian Coast. It was a little disappointing that they seem to still have a fly infestitation along the window but that was my only disappointment. The service was excellent from the hostess to our server, John. I Came here Saturday night May 20th. I'm disappointed that I trusted Gastby's Grill to deliver a wonderful experience for my birthday! If you read the reviews below you will see the majority are not happy about the speed of service! It takes a long time to receive meals and appetizers! We set over 30 mins waiting for appetizers, than the waiter came and asked were we ready to order dinner, while we still did not receive appetizers! I sent back two meals that were not good! The second meal was cold I did not eat it and I explained to the waiter and she still charged me! We were a party of 8 so once we received the tab it was all together. We asked if we could have it split two ways we were told no and that's fine but it's how we were told. "NO SORRY WE DONT SPLIT TABS HERE" loudly and rude! Others in our party were missing drinks and sent back food as well. The drinks is probably the only thing that was good here plus my Deviled eggs! The restaurant is made so beautiful! My first time at this place. We went here for Valentine's Day and we had an alright time. The appetizer were the best part, the quest and puffy tortilla chip (reminiscent of a puffy taco shell taste) combination was AMAZING 8.75/10 The devil eggs with bacon jam and the shrimp was the start of the show. 10/10. I would go to happy hour just for this and the queso and chips. The lobster roll was not that good to me. I didn't finish it. I have eaten a lot of different lobster rolls and i make them myself and it just wasn't up to par in my opinion. I wouldn't get it again. I am ecstatic that Gatsby's is opened a grill restaurant in the neighborhood. The food has always been delicious and well worth every penny. I ordered the Cobb salad and the Gatsby's Prime Burger with French fries. Delicious, yummy. Love the atmosphere always. Happy that the patio will be opened. We went to try out this past weekend and the food and ambiance was great. They have a great outdoor patio with an outdoor, indoor bar. The menu ranges from steaks, pasta to burgers. Granted, this Gatsby's Grill is a little more reasonably priced, but it's still just fine for what you pay for. The service and ambiance here is A1. I had the shrimp taco and tried the angry chicken. The shrimp tacos were a 6/10 and fries 5/5 a bit soggy. The shrimp could have been blackened more and had more flavor. The angry chicken sandwich was overpowered with the buffalo sauce but the Ceasar salad was a winner. I also tried the Gatsby Margarita with peach. 7/10. I would definitely come back to have a few more of their drinks! Service was awesome! We just left here and I have mixed feelings about this place. Our waiter was very friendly and courteous but my goodness he was SLOW. The food is great but the kitchen is also extremely slow. Please keep in mind that this place was completely dead tonight. The lack of customers was the first thing I noticed upon arrival so I can't understand why the service was dragging. East coast oysters, fried Calamari & Shrimp Tacos was what I got during a nice outing with my Co workers. The food was overall great no complaints! Oysters were super fresh the cocktail sauce tasted great with a little hint of sweetness, fried calamari had some spice seasoning that enhanced the flavor & the shrimp were nice & tender as well as the cabbage slaw with it ! Gatsby's Grill is the new addition to the Gatsby's chain of restaurants located in the East End of downtown. They're more of a causal dining spot in comparison to its sister restaurants. My favorite dish was the deviled eggs. I really liked the flavor of the shrimp and bacon jam as it added an interesting spin to this dish. I thought the crab cake sandwich was pretty good as well. My least favorite dish was the calamari because it really lacked flavor. The two desserts were tasty and definitely shareable! read more

Deviled eggs with bacon jam: These are the best Deviled eggs I've had in a while.  The fried shrimp was glazed with a Thai Chili sauce. Chicken Fried Steak: The chicken fried steak itself was actually really good. The problem is they serve lemon butter on the steak instead of gravy....terrible idea. I didn't know or I would have asked for it to be omitted.  All entrees are served with brocolini and mashed potatoes. Both were good! It would have been very nice to have cream gravy. I asked for some and there was none in the establishment. I've never heard of anyone serving chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes without a gravy option. The negatives: My dining companion had a molded Strawberry in their drink. Yep, true story. Sent the drink back and they replaced it. The macaroni and cheese was terrible.  An undoctored box of kraft mac and cheese taste 10 times better than those dry noodles we were served. They serve lemon butter on top of everything. Terrible idea as lemon butter does not go over everything. Overall, this is one of those places that's a hit and miss. Some food was good and some a no thank you. They also need to add a brown or cream gravy to the chicken fried steak and have as an option for mashed potatoes. read more

I made a reservation for a small celebration. Confirmed the reservation and went to the restaurant to enjoy an event with family, only to arrive and the restaurant is closed. I tried to log onto the website which appears to no longer exist. I tried to call and the phone rang and finally disconnected me. To say I'm disappointed is putting it mildly. I understand unforeseen issues but to not let those with reservations know there is a problem is not professional. read more

I was really excited to try Gatsby's Grill because I've been to the sister location in Montrose and loved it. This experience didn't quite hit the mark. Our reservation was set for 7:30 pm and we arrived on time and were sat right by the front door. We started with the spinach artichoke dip, great dip but a little under flavored. Our server came back to take our order and we ordered a wedge salad and the delmonico with a side of Mac and cheese. Our main course didn't come out for an hour and it was not cooked correctly. I was disappointed in the service. I understand that it's Saturday night, peak time, and they have only been open for a few weeks but there's a lot of kinks to be worked out when it comes to service. There were tables who were sat after us that got their full meal before us. I feel that maybe our meal was not turned into the kitchen in appropriate amount of time. A manager did stop by to make it right and took off our entree. I hope this restaurant really tries to turn things around. I would like to give them another try in the future! read more

I'm not sure that I've ever had a worse service/management experience at any restaurant, anywhere, ever. Came in to get dinner and some drinks with two friends after a long day at work. We got there around 8. Focus was definitely meant to be a few drinks with sharing some dishes. We chatted a bit to catch up, talked about the menu a bit, then ordered a first round of drinks and some appetizers. Everything comes out without issue. The onion rings had WAY too much breading and the calamari was criminally over cooked, but we were there to catch up, so it was fine. The waitress pops up a few minutes later saying that the kitchen was going to close and asking for final food orders. It was before the restaurants closing time which seemed weird, but wasn't a big deal since we were ready to order anyway. She doesn't mention anything about drinks, the restaurant more broadly, etc....just that the kitchen is closing. Soon we're ready for a second round of drinks...we don't see her, but assume she'll be around soon with our food. A few minutes later, she drops our entrees at our table and we ask for our second round of drinks. This is when things really start to be problematic...she tells us that she can't get us any more drinks. I'm incredible confused and ask for an explanation...she says that the restaurant is closed. Huh? We literally just got handed our dinner. Keep in mind, it's like 9:05 on a Thursday night. Their closing time was apparently 9 and they literally do not serve anything, not even a beer, after that time. I ask her to check with the manager because I have never been to a single restaurant anywhere in the world where they would refuse to serve a beer at the same time as they were serving entrees. No idea what the manager actually said because he/she never came to our table. The waitress came back to tell us that the answer us still no. Then she suggested that the next time we come in (who would come back?!??) that we come in earlier. Lol. Thanks for the tip girl. I am still absolutely perplexed. A restaurant's closing time generally indicates the latest that they take reservations or the kitchens closing time...not the time that they stop serving customers and shoo everyone out the door. Also the fact that the waitress knew we hadn't even received our dinner yet and never thought to give a last call or mention this insane policy is terrible training for someone who apparently has zero experience being a server. It's not like we had a bunch of drinks and didn't need anymore or were trying to stay hours after closing...we literally were handed our dinners and then we're prohibited from having a drink to go with them. Gatsby's Grill is trying to be a "nice" American spot, but if I'm going to spend $20 on a mediocre sandwich I sure as heck better be able to at least have a beer with it. Absolute trainwreck of management and service with zero desire to fix it. What kind of manager doesn't explain a policy this bizarre himself/herself to the table? The total lack of service is even more amusing given there were only 3-4 tables filled the entire time we were there...which all makes sense now that I've been there. TLDR: if you absolutely must come here, I'd suggest going to at 5pm to avoid any risk of interrupting the servers and managers post-work plans. They're leaving at closing time whether or not you've eaten, so get in and out early. But there are SO many better places in houston, there is absolutely no reason to waste any time and money on Gatsbys mediocre food and horrendous service. I've been looking for a place like this for a long time and I've finally found it. With the closure of Del Frisco's Grille in Upper Kirby and Houston's on Westheimer, there has been a void in the city for an upscale American cuisine dining experience without having to spend big $$$ at a Prime steakhouse. The dining room is dark and stunningly beautiful especially for this part of town on the East End on Navigation Blvd where Tex-Mex reigns supreme with an El Tiempo Cantina and The Original Ninfa's directly across the street. There isn't too much change on the interior from the former restaurant The Acadian Coast who flopped after maybe 2 years in business. Apparently Gatsby's opened quietly on 12/29. My friend and I tried it for the 1st time on 1/7 at 7:30pm on a Saturday. Upon walking in, the dining room was about 33% occupied and there were 3 people sitting at the huge bar which is double-sided (one side located outside on the patio facing inwards and the other side of the bar vice versa). The hostess was polite upon entering but tried to slap us with a wait even though there were less than 20 people in the entire restaurant so we shook her like a lotion kiosk salesman at the Galleria and bolted straight for the bar. I'll never understand why people prefer to wait for a table vs just eating at the bar. Bar = bartender is almost always more experienced than a server, faster drinks and service and once you get to know them maybe an occasional heavy pour or a free drink. Regular Server = maybe extra lemons and napkins, if you're lucky. On to the food, we ordered charbroiled oysters, raw oysters and deviled eggs to start. My friend loved the charbroiled oysters and I loved the raw oysters. East Coast are they way to go as Gulf Coast osyters are trash. The Deviled Eggs were absolutely to die for. Best in the city. With bacon jam and spicy fried shrimp on top, your 1st impression is soft, delicious and sweet then the crunch and spiciness of the friend shrimp on top comes into play at the perfect moment for absolutely the best deviled egg experience in Houston. My previous favorites were at Pappas Bros Steakhouse but just so you realize my larger point here, at Pappas (yes they have lobster on top and 6 come to an order) they're $29.95 and at Gatsby's they're $15 (also x6 w/ fried shrimp). So you see you can get a similar (in this case better) appetizer as a fine dining steakhouse for 1/2 the price. For the entree, we split the 12oz NY strip. The NY Strip comes with mashed potatoes (not lumpy at all) and broccolini. We wanted to substitute but they wouldn't allow it. I guess the POS system would crash if you hit the Sub button but whatever they just opened. The steak came out perfectly cooked, had a perfect char on it with crossed grill marks and definitely looked bigger than 12oz which was great. We added 2 grilled shrimp on top for $8 which was a nice touch. Just to give you an idea, a 12oz prime NY Strip at a prime steakhouse runs $60 a la carte. Here you can easily split this entree with a date and it's plenty of food since it comes with sides. All in all, I'm giving five stars because of the tremendous sense of value your receive for your dollar here at Gatsby's Grill and the quality and deliciousness of the food. Plus the service is great too. The deviled eggs are to die for, reasonably-priced oysters and the steak at $50 w/ 2 sides was also a great value. This same meal at a prime steakhouse would easily have been $200 if not more. I can't wait until a 2nd location opens closer to the heart of the city which is West of Downtown. read more

It was French toast, a cinnamon roll, and an American breakfast which has eggs, bacon, sausage and hash browns....and there was absolutely no crowd. Discovered this gem today, and oh boy, what a gem. The decor was fabulous. I liked having the option to dine in or eat in the outdoor seating area. I chose to sit at the bar in front of the wide windows that opened to the outdoors. The bar seating area was a generous size, and the staff were super nice. My food came out hot and I could tell it had been *made to order.* I had the crab meat sandwich, which came with home fries, a poached egg, with a super soft, toasted bun. I hosted a large event here for a group of ~100, and I cannot overstate how outstanding the entire experience was for us. The space they set up for our group was amazing. We made use of the indoor bar which opens up to the outdoor patio space. The feeling of connectedness in this layout made for a great networking event and set the tone with a vibe that "just felt right". The outdoor patio is covered with fans/AC blowing from the bar, so it felt great outside despite it being an otherwise warm evening. Also, they actually have parking... The food we ordered tasted fantastic. They also made sure to bring the food out in waves, so there was always a warm fresh dish for guests to enjoy. Highlights were the Meatballs, Wings, and Artichoke Dip. I didn't get an opportunity to try the deviled eggs, but heard great things. The servers were all very attentive and made sure that everyone in the group was taken care of. Overall this was a 10/10 experience and I recommend Gatsby's to anyone looking to host an event or want a nice evening out. My organization will be back for future events, and I am looking forward to an evening with just the family.
