Came here after doing a brief search to find a quick bite before an Astros game. Located inside the Sam Houston Hotel. We had some trouble finding it at first. Then a nice gentleman Edwardo took us to the new location. The restaurant is located near the entrance of the hotel with a seperate entrance street level. But the restaurant is under construction, so they have made a mini version of the restaurant on the 2nd floor. So you need to take the side entrance to enter the hotel then take the elevator or stairs to the 2nd floor and go down a hallway to see what looks like a covered courtyard patio. The hotel is also under construction, looks like a major reno going on. When we walked in we were offered a complimentary welcome drink. It was a cucumber gin drink, very refreshing. There were a few folks doing the same thing catching drinks or food in there Astros gear. Service- was pretty good, our food and drinker server was Tatiana (sp). She recommends burger or wings so food could come out quick so we could roll out. And she was right, food came out in a reasonable time. Food- we decided on splitting the 6 wings, but comes in a dozen as well. For sauce we got the hot honey. The wings were tasty, great flavor, not too hot. Our server said it's a scratch kitchen, and I belive it. This is a great place to catch a snack or quick meal and walk to the Ice Box for the game. read more

I only tried the bar so I can't give any advice on the restaurant. The bartender was nice and checked back several times to make sure we were taken care of and she was attentive. The area is a nice quiet out of the way place to have a quick drink or a quiet meeting. I gave 4 stars only because I ordered an old fashioned and they clearly have not made them before. I had the pleasure of coming here last night for a friend's birthday dinner. The set up was very nice for 16 people. The restaurant is located inside of the hotel. Parking was easy, I just did valet for $15. I ordered the penne pasta an added shrimp. I must have been hungry because I ate most of the plate. Lol. The shrimp added to my order were very large. The prices were very reasonable, nice little atmosphere, and our wait staff was pleasant. My friend was staying at the hotel, and she said that she was enjoying her weekend. Au GratinWe had a great dinner and breakfast service while having a staycation here. Dinner service the amazing bartender was by himself holding down the fort but he was wonderful to talk to! He made me a delicious sour drop type drink and made my fiance a few drinks. My ordered the burger and it was delicious. I forgot what my fiancé ordered as this was over the summer but he enjoyed it as well. The next day we had breakfast on the other side (there are two sides to this restaurant). Again there was only one server but we came near the tail end of breakfast service so we had the place to ourself. Breakfast was quick and amazing! There is a very off putting bathroom smell immediately upon entering. I came in at 6:30 for the happy hour the website says runs till 7. They informed me no happy hour. I got the nachos for $18. Nachos are my favorite food but these left a lot to be desired. The Pearl wasn't busy, no people in the restaurant and 5 drinking at the bar. The nachos came out cold. Spent the weekend in Houston with my girlfriend and stayed at "The Sam" hotel. The Pearl is a great little restaurant and bar located in the lobby. The menu is pretty limited but the Bartender David was great. This was a great bar to end the night after drinking on Main Street. I appreciate the calm vibe. The service was good and the happy hour menu (4pm-7pm) is decent. They have a few good signature cocktails as well. I recommend the Sam's Battle Cry cocktail. read more

We came in on a Sunday and had not realized that there was a limited menu but even the limited menu was sufficient and there were good things available. I had a burger and fries and a glass of Pinot and it was delicious. For dessert we had the bananas foster cake in a cast iron mini skillet and it was amazing. The first night at the hotel, we came back early to have a drink at the hotel only to find out they closed early. The second night we called ahead to be sure they were still open. They were but .. we had drinks and ordered the TX nachos, declined a protein because the nachos were advertised as with cheese, pico, guac, beans, and poblanos. They came out with zero beans. They were fine, but definitely not as advertised. Service was okay, but it was quite cold. Thermostat was set at 62. The bartender was complaining about the cold but there was no changing of the temp. Thankfully they had the chiefs game on. Wouldn't recommend. Came here Sat for an early dinner, 5 pm, before theater performance of Riverdance, at the Hobby Center. The restaurant stayed pretty dead, there was maybe only 2 other tables serviced, from 5-7 so service was relaxed and unhurried. I got to catch up with my friend since her birthday was last month. The food and drinks were good. The decor and the maintenance of a historic building was very nice in the restaurant. The waiter was very welcoming with recommendation and didn't steer us wrong with the strawberry basil smash. For dessert he recommended the banana foster bread pudding. We couldn't decide because bread pudding isn't my favorite dessert. I would have gotten Creme brûlée cheesecake. My favorite 2 desserts together. But I always listen to staff since they know what is the chef speciality and dishes that are well executed. My friend's favorite is carrot cake so we got that. Can't go wrong with cream cheese frosting. There was a private party in the next open area and it seemed lively but short. There were 2 brides and they were beautiful. The renovation style was nicely done with the curated boutique style of bespoke. I'm sure lots of brides come to get the unique wedding style. My friend was impressed with the renovation;she has been to 17 the prior restaurant. She was thinking of coming back in April for a staycation when she sees Hamilton. We found this via Yelp as it showed it was a Hot new place close to where we were staying in downtown Houston. It is close to the ball field as well so we found others on their way to the baseball game grabbing a drink in this quiet little bar. We sat at the bar and enjoyed some of their happy hour drinks...my husband's favorite was the hot and cold drink. I wasn't a big fan as I don't care for Jalapenos or Tequila and it's base was Jalapeno Tequila :-) My husband had their shrimp and grits and the shrimp was fantastic. I had their scallops and pasta and it had great flavor as well. I think I would order the same dish but with the shrimp vs the scallops next time as the shrimp were large and very tasty!! I loved the Pearl!!! We went there for drinks and apps before dinner. It's located inside the Sam Houston Hotel, so you get to enjoy the historic feel of the building with bricks on the ceiling! The staff is super friendly and prompt with their service. The drinks were well-poured and the food was amazing!! We had the beef tartare and lobster fondue. Beef tartare was a little horseradishy, so be careful if you don't like that flavor. The lobster fondue was one of my favorite appetizers I've ever had! Taken by surprise! We had a reservation here for Valentines, and didn't know what to expect, as most don't immediately go for a restaurant in a hotel. However, it was DELICIOUS. The ambience was nice and romantic, and there was a bar across the hall, so it can be suitable for anything! The food was expertly detailed and crafted. The service was nice, too. The chef himself came around to ensure enjoyment and quality of the food. We are now convinced fine dining at a hotel has been slept on! Will, definitely be back! Business hours in all social media indicates that it is open all day. We arrived at 11 and there was no one at the front desk nor was there a sign to indicate the restaurant was closed. We waited for a few minutes and no one came. We heard people talking in the back so I went back there to ask. I was finally told it wasn't open. My friend wanted to go to some bar called pearl but out gps brought us here and I was just like I'm too tired to drive to the right place so we're eating here! Yay for serendipity! Anyway, you have to park on the street. If this restaurant wants to survive it better get its own separate valet parking different from the hotel. Valet parking for $30?! Downtown?! No one will come! That's a lot. You have to give complimentary valet if you're going to have fine dining in the middle of downtown. Anyway, we parked on the street and came into the restaurant. We were asked if we had reservations we said no and were seated anyway(I think as this restaurant gets more publicity it's going to be a very reservation driven place). We got the pickled shrimp and pork belly and egg to start with. I loved the shrimp but the pork belly was a tad too salty. For the main course I got the snapper and my friend got the grouper and we got a side of roasted brussel sprouts. Everything tastes so good. So delicious. So flavourful! We were looking for something different on a recent trip to downtown Houston. We selected The Pearl because of its proximity to our hotel. It is restaurant week in Houston so I went with the prix fixe menu. The cornmeal fried oysters with housemade tartar sauce was a delicious beginning. The shrimp tacos that followed had crispy shrimp and a wonderful pickled vegetable medley that exploded with flavor. My mom had the crab and corn chowder that she raved about (wouldn't share with us, so I am making this recommendation based on her assessment) and my sister had the sous vide skirt steak which was very flavorful. The Pearl is the restaurant/bar in The Sam Houston (a Hilton property). The restaurant and bar are two different entrances each with a slightly different, but great vibe. The breakfast here at the restaurant was simply amazing. Two thumbs up. We also had mussels and cocktails on the bar side last night, and that was fantastic as well. I went on a Thursday with my work group for lunch. They had a private event in the main dining area but the bar was open and there was plenty of seating. There was a couple at one table and after they left it was just us. It was cold and our waitress said they were working on making it warmer but never gave us an update. We kept our coats on the entire time. Our food took a little while to arrive but it was tasty. Among our entrees were the Cobb salad, fish tacos, pork sandwich and shrimp tacos - we enjoyed it all. They offered us cheesecake for the delay and the cold (weird icy week in Houston with lows in the 20's). Not sure what was wrong with their heater although I do understand it's an old building. We opted for lattes around the table and a slice of cheesecake. They were nice but based on the reviews I expected more. Itts taken me two days to determine what I would post here so I hope that this post will actually help improve the dining experience for others. We went here on Friday the 15 of June prior to the 7 pm Eagles concert which was four blocks away at Minute Maid. We sat down ordered drinks and appetizers at 5;45 and waited and waited. We then noticed that there were 6 or 7 other sets of diners waiting at tables - some with no drinks - some with appetizers and almost everyone looking fidgety. There were no waiters in sight. Our waiter showed up and asked us if we would like our wine as the kitchen was backed up - this at 6:20. We noticed that the couple to our left in the booth were trying to get his attention - he talked to them and walked away. Our friend then went and talked to the manager and asked her to assign more staff as people were waiting. The couple who was visibly upset then just got up and left. This scene then repeated a few more times in some variation. We saw our waiter walk by with the wine and watched him struggle to open the wine bottle in the back. Clearly he was not trained to open and serve wines with corks. He eventually brought the wine opened and in a bucket with the sharp foil edges sticking out. At 6:40 we were delivered our long awaited appetizers- our beet salad (are picture) which was supposed to be shareable had probably 2 beets chopped up with some cucumber and 2 small pieces of lettuce on a large dinner plate that took up a small third of the plate. You would think that after an hour of waiting there would be ample salad for at least one person. Our dinner companion who had ordered mussels took a bite of her mussels and thought they tasted odd so she decided to cleanse her palate with some bread that was on the side of the mussels. As she picked up her toasted bread she sniffed at it and then noticed a green grey large spot on the crust-it was mold. At this point- all four of us had had enough - one of us got up and talked to the manager who started tearing up. The manager then rushed to the kitchen and brought out the chef Who listened to us. We showed him the bread and asked about the freshness of the mussels. Unclear if he was affected. The manager who probably had been yelled at by several diners already. She offered to come our drinks. Regardless, we finished our wine and left and made it to Minute Maid where we loved watching the Eagles. To the management of Pearl - you have an ideal location, so you were probably not staffed for the Eagles concert goers who filled your restaurant. Your inability to staff accordingly is pathetic. Worse you lack of quality control of simple things like moldy bread and bad mussels. Submit yourselves to Iron Chef to get back on track. read more

After some encouragement I tried The Pearl again. I had a rough experience last time, but I'm relieved to say that was just a bad night. The Pearl's staff gave me a world class experience that I highly recommend every one try. My friend and I started off with the pork belly fries (NO ONIONS) and they came out fresh and smothered in cheese and pork. This is on their happy hour menu, so I encourage you to make this your first option after the drinks (warning: they pour a very VERY heavy drink. Pace yourself). After the appetizer we ordered scallop carbonara and bouillbaisse. The servings were huge and both meals were delicious (the carbonara was my favorite).
