After living in my house for 32 years, I finally decided that it was now a necessity for central A/C. I did my preliminary research and found three companies who had great reviews. The third and final company that came out to provide estimates was GC Heating & Cooling, a local family owned company. Gustavo, the owner came to my house the same day I called. I knew within 30 minutes that I definitely would be having Gustavo's company be the ones' to do the job. Though Gustavo's long and impressive background prior to starting his own business, along with the numerous favorable reviews detailing his customers' experiences, were partially instrumental in my decision, there were even more important reasons for my doing so. Gustavo is a truly genuine and decent human being! He was eloquent and communicated in terms that I as a layman could understand. Of particular importance for me is the fact that we have a bonus room that was added on to the house by the first owner, and I was concerned about getting good airflow into that large area. Gustavo conveyed a plan that seemed even more thorough and sensible than the other two companies I spoke with. And to my surprise, his quote was a few thousand dollars less than the other family owned company that had also really impressed me! It is obvious to me that Gustavo has immense pride in his work, his company's reputation, and the ultimate satisfaction of his customers. In other words, I truly believe that Gustavo could make more money for his work. However his ethics, integrity, and morals, are more important to him than excess profits! He and his son Alex started the job early Monday morning and finished the work mid-afternoon Wednesday. They were always on time, upbeat, and very hard working. Gustavo took care of setting up the asbestos removal in the attic, the city work permit, and at the job's completion, the two inspections (efficiency inspection and city inspection). Lastly, we have some rescue animals, a dog and a few "house" cats. Gustavo and his son Alex were always on top of making sure that my pets were secure. As it turned out, Alex rescues cats and Gustavo is also a huge animal lover and rescue advocate. Personally, I have found that people who are lovers of animals usually are compassionate, decent, and genuine in other areas of their lives as well. I'm extremely happy with our new A/C and Heating System, and though we have not yet had to use it for extreme heat, I know that Gustavo will be there for me if I feel the need for assistance. I have used this company before and had great service. This is the reason I called them back to hire them again. What a mistake that was. I have wasted a day sitting here waiting for them. My window for service was 8 am to 12 pm. At 12, I called and talked to a man and told him I hadn't heard from anyone or seen anyone to do my service. He asked me the name of the advisor coming to do my service. I told him, and he said he would call me back. It is now an hour later, and still nothing. Gustavo replaced an older HVAC system for us a year ago. Thinking he did a good job at a reasonable price I gave him five stars for the job. About a month ago we needed to recharge another AC unit, so I called Gustavo, who said he would send somebody to do the job the following day. But, nobody showed up. After another day and another call, somebody came, after yet another day, and did the job at one third higher cost than the original quote without explaining the price difference. In a nutshell, our hot water heater died. GC came out but were perplexed by several issues they found. Their back-and-forth conversation centered around "I've never seen this before." My least favorite part of owning a home is paying for it. That's probably true for most people, but I find it very difficult to part with a dollar. For that reason, about 10 years ago, when my air conditioning died, I told my family we were going to live without it - I grew up without air conditioning and did just fine. About 2 years ago, the furnace started to give us a little trouble as well, and this year, before the winter started in earnest, it died too. Both systems dated to 1977 (I bought the house in 2005). As soon as the cold weather kicked in this past year, I knew I was going to have to have everything replaced. The extreme cold this year, plus the unreasonably hot summer in 2022...well, it was time to fix things. I got on Angie's list to find some contractors. I stuck with people with 5 stars (or as close as possible) and over 100 reviews, and had about 8 different outfits come by to look at the job and give me bids. It took a while, but when you are looking to have to spend 25-30,000 dollars, you want to make sure it doesn't go to waste. I found that, even with 5 stars, a company might not be too impressive when they come by to look at a job. One company tried to hard sell me with fancy brochures and pressure tactics. Another opened up our discussion by saying that he "refuses to pull permits - it saves us both money," and that he insisted on installing a furnace that did not comply with county emissions standards, because "it'll be nothing but problems if you follow the rules." Gustavo, from GC Heating and Cooling, struck me as a cut above the rest of the guys that showed up. First off, the first thing he wanted to do was see the current system himself, despite being the owner of the company and not a young man. He and I climbed into the attic - the fact that he invited me to check it out was cool - and after he saw everything, we sat down to talk. He was patient and kind - I felt like he was excited about doing the job, excited about how he could improve the situation of our house, and he wanted to communicate that excitement to me. I told him what we wanted to do, and he gave me several options to accomplish the goal - of course, as a professional with a college degree in mechanical engineering, he had an opinion about which was the best option for us, but (and this is a testament to his honesty) crucially, his "best" option was not the most expensive option. After we were done talking, he gave me a very fair price (I base my opinion on the other estimates I got), told me that no matter what happened on the job he would not increase the price, and told me to call him if I liked what he had to say. Let me make this long story a little bit longer - I chose Gustavo to get the job done, and I'm grateful to him and his crew for getting the job done in as excellent and efficient a manner as I could have hoped. His crew is clean and polite, and they work quietly and quickly, always cleaning up after themselves. Any time I pointed out a problem, they fixed it. Any time I had a question, they answered it. To be honest, these guys were so cool, it made me not want to go to work on the Friday they started the job so I could work with them and maybe learn something! They wrapped up a full HVAC job, removing all of the old equipment and installing the new, in a 2400 square foot house, in two and a half days. The whole time, Gustavo was running the show, keeping tabs on his guys, making sure things were running smoothly, and always answering all of my questions. On the final walk though for the job, when everything was done, he was still excited about the work, showing me all the different stuff he and his crew had done. Believe me, I was glad to shake the guy's hand and thank him and his team for a job well done. Gustavo's secret, if you ask me? He likes people, and he likes helping them out. The L.A. weather seems to get hotter and colder for longer periods each year, plus the ever increasing cost of natural gas, we have finally decided to replace our gas furnace with an energy efficient heat pump/AC for our home. WOW! A/C broken late morning on a Friday with forecast for 107 degree heat. I had my triplet grandkids over and house was already at 85 degrees. I called GC expecting no openings for a week or so. I explained my problem and they were able to schedule a repair man come by later that day around 5 pm to see if they could do anything. I get a call at 1230 from repair man saying he will be at my house in an hour. He arrives, diagnosed and explained problem. He actually showed me old part compared to new one. A/C working by 230 pm, outstanding!!!! And repair only cost $250, with $200 of that being parts. Just an unbelievable experience. This review is long overdue. In August 2017, our A/C stopped blowing cool air. It was HOT, and our house was sweltering. I searched Yelp and other review sites for a good HVAC service provider, and chose GC. At the time Jeff was due to arrive, I had to pick my kid up from school, so I was late for the appointment. I apologized profusely, and he took it in stride. He very easily could have told me to pound sand, but thankfully for us, he didn't. Jeff opened up our HVAC system, and immediately noticed the filter was in the wrong place (thanks, previous owners) and a metal cover to the air coils was missing (again, crazy previous owners). He was informative and showed me everything he was doing, and explained how the air was supposed to flow through the unit. When we saw the coils, we finally discovered why we occasionally got dog hair in our vents, and we don't have a dog...gross. He cleaned the coils, getting blankets of dog hair off, and getting air flowing through the coils again. It was a two-hour window for service, but he wasn't done. He drove down to the hardware store and bought some sheet metal. Then he made the metal cover at his truck and attached it to our air conditioner. Around this time, my husband arrived home, and he informed him of all the issues he told me about. This service was beyond a tune-up, and my husband and I started figuring out the potential cost of the repairs and we were a little scared (heck, Jeff was working on our A/C unit for almost four hours and it was nearly 7:00 p.m.). Boy, did we overestimate! When Jeff gave us the invoice, we were stunned. We were charged for the basic service, plus the parts for the coil cover, and he even provided us the proper sized filter for our unit. Jeff was incredibly informative, friendly, and helpful, and he recommended another service within eight or nine months, because our unit was neglected for so many years. Our A/C is now running great, and we will be using GC regularly. In fact, we have a service scheduled for later this week. read more

I called GC Heating & Cooling after another contractor mis-diagnosed my AC system and charged me $1,700 for parts I didn't need. Then he wanted another $1500 to fix the real problem. Juan from GC came out and found the real source of my problem and fixed it, saving me at least $500 over the other contractor. After one day, the AC stopped working again, so Juan came out again and did a lot of extra work under warranty and finally got my system working properly. During this process, Gustavo the owner even called to assure me that they would fix my system with minimal cost. From start to finish, between the 1st contractor and GC, it took 3 weeks to get my AC system back up and running. Of course, it was during the hottest 3 weeks of the year so far. But GC stood solidly behind their work and went the extra mile to fix my AC system for a very reasonable price. They really do care that their customers are satisfied. There needs to be a way to put zero stars. We hired this company for the entire package, heating and cooling. Once the work was complete, we were shown a test run and felt the air strong in our living room. During our initial walk-thru, we were told we would get new ducts and new vents, but all we got was new vents. We were also told we needed a 3-ton unit for the size of our house but it turns out we need a bigger size than that. Since the installation, the only room that you can feel the Ac in is the living room. There are 5 additional rooms in our home that are not cool at all.. In fact, they feel warmer when we have the ac on. We have contacted this company several times to come out and look into the issue and all we are told is that we need new ducts.. Ducts that we were told (during our initial walk thru) would be replaced. Because he didn't write that on the contract is why they are claiming we need to pay for additional work. Today I had a company come out to look at the set up and it turns out that the duct is completely smashed. Looks as though it was sat on. There is a mess in my attic and several leaks in the connections to the ducts. Now, not only did this company come in and take advantage of my retired and disabled veteran father, but it looks as though we now need an additional $1,500.00 worth of work. I hope this company sees this review and comes back to fix the damages that they have caused in my father's home. Buyers beware!!! Do not use this company. It sounds great when they are talking pricing, but they did more damage than good and my parents are still paying the price for this company's shotty work. We were referred to this company through our homeowners insurance for heating replacement and repairs. The initial appointment was fine. The technician was knowledgeable and explained what needed to be done. We were looking forward to getting the work done, but it never really started. GC Heating and Cooling was supposed to order a specific part and it took them 2 weeks to get back to me. This is after I left a few messages trying to find out what was going on. We made 2 appointments for follow up where they could take measurements and to discuss payment. The first appointment was canceled and rescheduled by them. The second appointment no one showed up. I was home all day waiting for them! They had the nerve to tell my insurance company that they came and no one was home. :/ read more

Our AC system died and we needed to replace it and we also wanted to take this opportunity to relocate the system to the attic for better air distribution in our 2 story 3,200 sqf home. Over a 3 week period, I received 9 bids from the top rated AC contractors. The bids were all over the place going up to $17k for roughly the same configuration. When I first met with Jeff (sales person for GC Heating & Cooling), I was impressed that he was able to quote me on the spot prices for any American Standard equipment or configuration I asked for: 2-stage cooling, 2-stage heating, air filter box, extra warranty, etc). Jeff made an interesting point that any good sales person should know prices (or approximate cost) of the top of their head if they been doing it long enough. What stood out with GC Heating & Cooling prices, is that their markup Is either minimal or at their cost. Let me give you 2 examples. One of the other bids I was considering said that the job would be done to city code but did not include a permit. When I asked how much it was to add the permit, I was quoted $800 dollars more. When I called the city of Orange asking how much the permit was since I was being charge $800, the clerk laughed saying it was $142 at most for such a permit. On another bid that I received, it included a 1-stage gas heating system. I asked how much it would be to upgrade to 2-stage heat, I was quoted $1,200 more. This is ridiculous because the actual difference is only $340 more when I checked on-line. I can purchase the same identical 2-stage heater on-line for $1,780, so $1,200 extra for an upgrade is just a horrendous markup from the contractor. Unfortunately we the consumers get taken for a ride and this type of markup is common practice with many HVAC contractors, so it was refreshing to find GC Heating & Cooling that offered me upgrades at either cost or at a small markup. No games, no wait, straight forward pricing on the spot - I really liked that. I got top of the line American Standard system (same as TRANE) which is rated #1 in Consumer Reports with all matching American Standard components: ECM Air handle; A-Coil; Condenser & Air filter ( 2-stage cooling, 2 stage heating). The price included new line set, new electrical disconnect, condenser pad, 13 new registers, new intake & outtake plenums, isolation pads, city permit, HERS rating, and the re-location from the garage to the attic. Aside from the great price, they were super clean. We have white carpet throughout our house which includes the stairs. Everything was covered daily during the 3 day install which was major work relocating everything from the garage to the attic. As with all major construction, there was an issue that occurred a couple of days after the system was installed. Gustavo returned my call the following day and they were out promptly and corrected the issue. I have nothing but good things to say about GC Heating & Cooling and of Jose, Emilio and Tio who did all the work. I highly recommend them. They were able to start the job soon after I signed the contract which was great with the summer upon us. What I appreciated the most however was the honestly in not abusing me with super high markup prices which is prevalent and ridiculous here in Orange County. Some contractors will say that "quality" costs. Well heck yeah but not a freaking $6k more! The quality of GC Heating & Cooling was great and they did everything to code and even did extra things I asked for which was not part of the contract. My condo association selected GC heating and air after interviewing more than 6 companies. We had 4 units ready to be replaced and these guys were competitively the best priced and provided great service by being on time, accommodating our schedule and having a professional manner while working inside the home. Gustavo is the owner and Michael, his nephew helped explain all the different options for us. They wondered to come back at different times in case we had more questions. Gustavo was very professional and personable... He came in, told me what was needed. I ended up with two split units. One for the living room. One for the bedroom. He made sure they had warranties incase something goes wrong. As well as making sure I got a good price. With in two days, his installers came and installed the units.
