Holy Cow, apparently I have super powers, and didn't even know it, until I visited Gel's Kitchen! I must be the Invisible Man!! At least, that's how I felt during my most recent - and final - visit to Gel's Kitchen last Sunday morning. I sat at the counter and waited a full 10 minutes, and didn't even get an acknowledgement, no less than service or a cup of coffee. Maybe I should have done jumping jacks in the middle of the restaurant, or stood up and flipped people off, just to confirm the effectiveness of my Invisible Man suit. The really funny part is that the owner was standing right in front of me, and it wasn't even that busy (it was before 8 a.m.). So their food is good and prices decent, but who cares, if the service sucks? It's not just me - a lot of recent Yelp reviews also complained of poor service and bad attitudes. This place is the BEST!!!! Whenever I am in Rhode Island on business, this is my "office!" I meet clients for breakfast and lunch, and sit in the corner with my laptop! The BEST Corned Beef Hash in New England!!! Homemade, not canned! With three eggs and rye toast, it's my go-to breakfast! The owner and her staff are wonderful people! Ok at Best A weird cast of character in this place. The food is ok at best. The decor is very strange and the menu has odd specials. My wife ordered a breakfast sandwich, it was terrible. This place is small but the food is good. I had the french toast with a side of bacon. I did ask for it extra crispy, but that's not how it came. The server was nice and I have no complaints. If you want a fancy breakfast, this isn't the place, but if you like good old diner food, then it's for you. read more

This is for sure to be a favorite that I visit as often as possible. It has a really cozy, home cooking diner vibe with plenty of specials and a great menu. I ordered the Eggs Benedict with home fries and a side of corned beef hash, and a coffee. Every bite and sip was simply comforting and made my morning. The eggs were poached well, the hollandaise is clearly homemade, and has amazing flavor. It was so rich that I didn't end up needing the extra side of hollandaise. My breakfast partner ordered a plate with 3 eggs, sausage, bacon, homefries, and toast with a side of the corned beef hash and coffee. He said his food tastes great, and from what I could tell it was all cooked perfectly. It was a plus that they serve their syrup warm. We both enjoyed a couple of cups of coffee which was quite good, and really hit the spot! Our waitress was attentive, and someone was always coming around to check out coffee cups. The portions here are nice, and I left full and satisfied with a bit of leftovers for later. This is a place to check out for sure! read more

The last time I went in there was the worst, no service waited and when I got my food very very disappointed. One of the many west warwick hidden gems..its not only a good hown town diner but a social careing establishment it goes beyond good food , reason for almost never an empty seat and local chatter is awesome..Gel's is a most visit diner..one of the last good RI diners with price and portion go hand and hand..bring some food nonparishbles they also help the community..the staff are just amazing. read more

This may be silly and somewhat irrelevant to most of you, but I sort of have a soft spot in my heart for these super local places that offer scratch off lottery tickets and have keno screens at the bar. Adding to the charm, is a rack of canned food just inside the door labeled with a sign offering the items to folks going through hard times. There's a first for me. Food wise, I had their 'Irish benedict' on corn bread. Homemade hash, homemade buttery cornbread drizzled with homemade hollandaise sauce. It was amazing and came quickly. Went to Gels in west Warwick and had the surprise of my life. The breakfast was one of the best and was prepared exactly as I asked. Poached eggs have to be cooked with soft centers. If not, they are not able to be eaten. The price was incredible, 3.60 for two eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. I will return for more visits and may try lunch someday. Went here for breakfast -- just saw the place driving by + was pleasantly surprised . The place is a little run down but the portions are on point. I had the Greek omelet + it was HUGE. They offer egg beaters + egg whites only too. The home fries were yummie spiced nice + with onions. The service + prices were reasonable + I think at one point the owner came around to every single table + asked how everyone was doing-- how nice! There is plenty of parking + they can take large groups. If you need a lil quickie breakie this is your kinda place. read more

I wanted to give an update to my review from 2013 as I have now had a chance to visit numerous times.. The place is packed on the weekends with lines out the door...dont let that turn you away. The servers move quickly to move the line along... but without making you feel rushed. Portions are enormous, easily shared with others. We also had a First Communion cake preordered recently and it was beautiful!! I feel a 5 star update is in order ! We tried this place out for breakfast due to the very high ratings we saw on Yelp.... The place was packed!!! The service was on the slower side, but I think only because they had one server in the entire place.After we sat down, there was not an empty table in the place. Their menu is pretty all inclusive, and their prices are very inexpensive, but their portions are on the smaller side.I had the crepes as part of a platter breakfast meal, and they would have been better, had they been filled with fruit of some sort! Great service and great breakfast. The three eggs I got were very large and cooked perfectly. Italian bread toast was awesome and buttered to perfection. The bacon was cooked to that exact point you want it to be. Also had sausages and corned beef hash which were both delicious. The hash is definitely homemade. I didn't try the coffee but my girlfriend said it was "really good". Another thing l I liked about this place was that they had keno going so I could play and eat at the same time. Some of the reviews here talk about the poor ambiance and poor service. I didn't think it was that bad, but perhaps I was prepared from reading all the reviews. This is a no frills local diner. You seat yourself, as the sign says. There's cheap good food (I've never seen lower breakfast prices before). When you need something, you can easily flag someone down. The diner looks like they didn't change their decor in the past thirty years, but many old local diners are like that..tacky decor. I thought it was actually cute that their decorations catered to the local community...lottery tickets for the senior citizens, miss RI picture, soccer team plaques, etc. They also offer crepes, which I rarely see in diners! i had breakfast here this morning it was absolutely delicious. i had the platter. which consisted of French toast, home fries, bacon, and eggs. the home fries were excellent. and they knew how to cook the bacon. this morning i was going to give them a four. but the bacon and the home fries added a point. they were really good. even my dad said the home fries were good. he had the seniors special. which consisted of eggs, toast, and home fries. we will be back. our waitress was excellent. and the prices were reasonable. read more

This was not a great experience for my family. We stopped in to get brunch on a Sunday afternoon, it was busy, but not crazy. We walked in at the same time as two other tables, one table ate and got their check before we got our food. The other table was not far behind them. At one point our waitress was sitting at a table with her friends. My husband was never asked for a refill on his coffee and my daughter didn't get a place setting until we asked. The food was fine. Come here if you want breakfast served with a side of attitude. I used to come here every so often with my then boyfriend and loved it. Nice little mom and pop diner with BANGIN home fries and very tasty corned beef hash. However, the past few times I ordered take out, I felt like I was inconveniencing the staff for doing so. Now mind you, I am a very polite and friendly person at baseline. I ordered food on the phone and the woman on the other line sounded very annoyed and short with me, even though I only ordered one thing (cheese blintzes, which were very tasty). When I went to pick up the food, I approached the waitress at the counter and it was almost as if I was invading their space or something for wanting to pick up the food I ordered. I was met with cold stares and the waitress didn't even bother to make eye contact with me. I have never felt more unwelcome at a place than here. I figure this was just an off day and the food was too good for me not to try again so I decided to order take out again another time. This time around when I went to pick up the food, I greeted the waitress that was at the counter, and she literally walked away after she made eye contact with me! I awkwardly stood there for a few more minutes until finally someone else came to complete my transaction.
