I recently started coming to Gelson's.. Not your ordinary supermarket that's for sure. I like that everything's in order, super clean, eatery, French bakery, & the fact they have a top deck to have some wine, grub, & just chill out with friends.. I still have yet to hang out & try their wines. FYI, milk Always tastes better in a glass bottle! Love that they have Broguiere's. Gelson's a bit expensive so keep that in mind. Very clean and pleasant experience. The staff is always very helpful here and willing to assist you without a long wait. I like the Deli and wine tasting setup as well. The only downer is that you may find yourself paying more for standard items you can find for cheaper at Pavillions or Ralphs. The upside is that they regularly send $5 off coupons to my house, and at times have certain items that 1. you can not find anywhere and 2. the sale items are at times very competitively priced. Gelson's has arrived in Long Beach. This is actually really cool, because I think they are an excellent grocery store. While here I managed to get a number of things which i was not able to find in either Whole Foods or Lazy Acres - such as vegetarian chicken broth stock. The guy who was at the cheese counter was really super nice, and even said he would look into a cheese which I have been looking for but haven't been able to find in stores in a long time called "Golden Bear". I also love their prepared food section, I think the food that they sell there is excellently priced and you definitely get what you pay for. I would probably go here and shop again. read more

I just had some delicious fresh sushi prepared here. Definitely better quality than whole foods and the price is the same :-) My one negative comment is: at these prices, I feel the servers should be smiling from ear to ear AND kissing my a$s... they weren't, and they didn't. read more

I really love this market. Why? Because I am a big fan of Basmati rice, and that's what they serve in the hot foods section. I like putting it on orange chicken and enchiladas. Also, it really annoys me when I have to buy Dr. Brown's black cherry soda in packs of six when I really just want one. God, if they started to predictably serve tandoori chicken or sell Dr. Brown's black cherry in six packs, I would literally DIE because of how inane that would be. Just makes my blood boil. I'd probably still end up going to Gelson's anyway because apparently there is no other store I can bother in Long Beach to get what I want. P.S. I also really get annoyed that Best Buy doesn't sell chinchilla food P.P.S. I occasionally accidentally make french toast with dark green leafy vegetables instead of bread because the two are so similar. As similar as two types of long grain rice. read more

If you're going to check out the new Gelson's in Long Beach, make sure you bring your winter coat, a hat and gloves! The temperature in the store is way too cold and does not lend itself to leisurely shopping. I wanted to explore what items and specialty brands they offer, and get familiar with the new store...but all I could do was get out as quickly as possible The pastries in the bakery look beautiful but $42-$44 for a fruit or chocolate tarte that serves 6? Mon dieu! One would think, for a brand-new store, that the staff would be extra friendly. I walked around to several counters and not one person smiled or said hello. Maybe they are all focused on learning their new jobs. I will wait a month, and go back to recheck the temperature. If this has been corrected I will update the post. read more

Sorry, I don't see what's so great about this market. Yes, it is very clean and the free samples were cool...and the salad bar and fresh options were too. But there are so many overpriced items here. Like at whole foods, sure I'm paying a little more but I know I'm getting quality organic products. You can find some of the same stuff you find at Ralph's and Vons here for double the price. So you're just paying for a clean environment where it's not too crowded....guess that might make it worth it for some people. Honestly the only reason I came here is because I was sent a coupon by email. This is the only place that the coupons need to be printed out... And I intentionally looked at the coupon before I came here and read all the fine print to make sure I could use it from my mobile app. But nope...well it worked..got me into the store bought some stuff I could have just picked up at whole foods without being able to use the coupon after all that. Have been a fan of this store since they opened, however was shocked at the crowd in the store. Despite state mandates, they are ignoring capacity requirements. When I spoke to the manager, her response was that they would start counting customers...the woman behind me admitted she was also concerned by the crowd and was going to shop elsewhere. When I left, I noticed parking lot was full and no one was monitoring the door...going back to Trader Joe's across the street even though they may have a line to enter. read more

DO NOT buy shopping bags from Gelson's. Mine lasted 2 weeks and a strap tore off. I went back few weeks later and talked to the asst Manager. She said I needed the receipt. Which I didn't keep. I just thought a little customer service would have helped. It was 8pm Friday night. 8/2. I told the checkout lady and she said "it figures ". I shop there all the time. Bad PR for $3 bag. I love the selection of quality produce, cheeses and the butcher shop. The deli area has a great assortment of salads, meats and everything your hungry little heart could desire. It's a foodie nirvana, except for the price. There are no deals to be had here, but if you're looking for something special, Gelson's is a great place to shop. read more

Wow! I am sitting on the upstairs balcony at Gelson's. I have a salad and the fresh Ahi poke...it is delicious. The Ahi poke is fantastic, the salad is incredible (make your own ), and the Oatmeal stout is very tasty. So Wow! Gelson's has the best place ti hangout and have a great bite to eat. Went on Thursday where they have $2 off hot food. Not a ton of selection and on any other day would be overpriced. Came about $10.50 for a step-above-fast-food quality meal of decent portion. Wouldn't spend anymore than that. As for the food itself: Orange And Lemongrass chicken is subpar to Panda, but well done on the grilled veggies and Moroccan chicken. A little known secret is to sit on the roof during sunset for a nice outdoor patio setting and heaters that overlook the alamitos bay. Probably can even sneak a bottle of wine up there too. read more

My good idea: tasty slab o prime rib for afternoon snack. Pre-workout man food. The Reality: awkwardness of cutting into a semi raw steak with plastic utensils while sitting at the market's counter. I eventually gave up and used my hands and teeth, to the amusement of the friendly and knowledgeable staff. The flavor was right, as was the au jus, horseradish, and grilled mushrooms, but next time I'm headed to Naples Rib Co for a sit-down, using real utensils. Gelson's is definitely a nice upgrade from the old Alby's; the gentrification obvious-- tho welcome. A substantial menu offering many tasty hot items, as well as made to order. read more

Over the last 3 years, I have gotten to know the staff and I always get that friendly greeting when I walk in! I especially love the coffee and pastries served at Renaud's!! Hello reader! I have been meaning to Yelp Gelsons for quite some time. Today, I am catching up on my reviews. We, my fiance and I, love stopping by there for coffee and/or lunch at their buffet when we come out to go fishing. Their Tandoori BBQ chicken is so yummy. And their buffet has a good selection. We like sitting next to their flower shop area at the coffee station to eat and/or sip on coffee. Nothing like the scent of fresh cut flowers! Their staff are always smiling. I think they truly like working there. Anyways, we will be stopping by again next time we go fishing. I hope the Tandoori BBQ chicken will be available when we do. read more

I was waiting for this place to open because I've heard so many good things about Gelson's. Sorry to say that I was not impressed. I expected a larger selection than whole foods with reasonable prices however I'm really not sure how this classifies as a market, it's just like other grocery stores with a little more selection by way of raw/veggie/etc. they are very brave opening their only long beach location right across the street from whole foods. while this location is OK and it is likely I will go again, whole foods still reins as the knowledgeable market type store in the area. read more

Another great grocery place in Long Beach--better than Whole Foods and Lazy Acres only because their upstairs deck to hang out and eat. It's actually quite relaxing hanging out on their upstairs' deck. Great view of the marina. Very comfortable, bunch of sofas and pillows, and other chairs with umbrellas. Now, they offer water, utensils and napkins upstairs, which is great! Five stars because their beef short ribs ($11/pound) are delicious! It was meaty and sweet, so flavorful! I also loved their macaroni cheese and cheese tortellini. There is also a great salad bar, sushi, bakery, wine, etc. Great for lunch. I used to absolutely love this place. This review has no bearing on the wine bar ( they still rock) if I could give this place zero stars for customer service at the deli I would. After standing there over 15 min to get a sandwich with no acknowledgement I'm good. Several people walked by me and my children without a word. A blond haired lady said "have you been helped "after standing there and I said no. She proceeded to tell me she's clocking out and can't help. This all before a man (whom I assume is one of the chefs) served her a small plate of food so she can stuff her face. Gelsons I will no long patronize your business. I like Gelson's and can find some decent pricing if I look closely. However, their hot food bar @8.99 per pound is way overpriced and judging from my last 2 attempts,eg; 1 enchilada was $7.00 and a turkey stew at $9.00 was tasteless. Gelson is my favorite market to shop at. I love the cheese bar and wine bar. The store is so beautiful and clean. And the ocean view from the deck, it's gorgeous! Two level deck is so unique, upper level and lower level! You must go see it, get some cheese and wine head up to the deck for sunset ocean view. The Staffs here are so helpful and friendly, especially Andy Tuong is awesome! Look for him to get a special cheese platter, special made, may not find at other stores! It's not just a market, it's got a minor food court with warm food, salad bar, sushi bar(is it call sushi bar), soup bar, pizza freshly cooked! Many food to choose from. Love it!! I stopped to buy a pear tart and and a strawberry cheesecake today , I enjoy this bakery .. I was taken back that she wanted to charge me 10 cents. For a bag to carry out my bakery goods after spending 50 dollars, I will be back because of the delicious pastries , however I think Gelson's could have given me a pap bag on the House. read more

All together this is a very clean and well managed however a few months ago while I was sitting in the parking lot around 7pm and I saw this really young worker with long brown hair and her name tag said krystal come walking out and get in to a car with some other girls there music was so loud it was blasting but what really got me was they were straight up drinking alcohol a little while later around 730 she got out of the car and was drunk she couldn't even walk straight maybe because I'm an old ladie but is this what the world has come to back when I was a young ladie we didn't drink at work they all looked super young as well I'm gonna have to guess there not barely 18 now this was my First and last time here as I'm not from California when I was there age you'd get fired on the spot for drinking at work is it just me or do parents not have any idea what there children are up to these days to me it is genuinely sad now I don't have children but it is sad to see some of the younger generations other than that gelsons was a very enjoyable store I don't think I'll ever be returning to California so I'm happy that I got a chance to visit while I was here read more

I've gone in to use this market on several occasions since they've finally come to Long Beach. I used to use Whole Foods exclusively and once I started using Gelson's, I realized just the quality of the service in the store was of excellence and it really comes down to ownership and management and how they care and then follows through to the people in the store. I will say with total clarity here that this is an awesome place to shop. They're very helpful. Very caring, and go out of their way for you. Even better, the quality of the products they carry and their willingness to get you what you need for your dietary needs or otherwise, they're always in tune with. Sunday 3/1/2020 at 4:45 pm I had walked in to Gelsons, wanting to get a slice of pizza. There was a lady who ethnicity was either Polynesian or African American I could quite catch her name. I had asked her kindly what restaurant was next door to Gelson. Her response was I dont know not professional, very rude, lots of attitude. The gentleman next to her looked at us as if we were stupid. I went ahead and order a slice of pepperoni pizza, out of an entire pizza she gives me the most burnt slice on there. I come and shop here at Gelsons all the time, and never once had an employee treat me like this. Almost every employee knows me by first name, she must be new. I am hoping Gelsons will take care of this very rude, unprofessional employee. read more

I usually don't write bad reviews, but I just have to this time. This is regarding their hot food counter. The lady who helped me was very nice, but food I got was just awful. I ordered bbq pork ribs to go. They are expensive because obviously they're pretty heavy. I got home to eat them and discovered that 50 precent of meat on them is just disgusting fat. It was all covered with bbq sauce so I couldn't tell until I started eating them. If I wasn't so tired I'd probably would got back to the store and demanded a refund, but I was, and didn't feel like making that trip. Instead I just threw them away read more

I'm a sucker for fancy grocery stores. My wallet hates them, though. I went in today to grab some scallops for home-cooked Valentine's Day dinner tomorrow, and it cost me $25. Yuck! But, I suppose it's a pricey ingredient. Their selection of meats and seafood are actually quite good, if expensive. I love all the options they have from non-mainstream sources. I also got dinner from the hot buffet ($2 off on Thursdays, yeah!!) and while it was $10 for rice and chicken tikka masala... it was actually pretty good. I think it's comparable to the indian food around, which I will admit isn't the best. But, this felt much less oily and less heavy, and given the taste wasn't significantly different, I'll take it.
