It saddens me to give a store like Gelson's a 1 star review. After the interaction I had here today, I will not be returning until at least 2021, nor will any of my family members. I was shopping here with a family member and while we were in line waiting to check out, the customer in front of us began yelling at us in a very barking like way. She carried on about how we were standing too close to her, yet we were an easy 6-7 feet away from her. We stood there in shock that this was even happening, questioning our safety. Meanwhile, not one Gelson's employee or security stepped in to assist us with this irate customer! After a few minutes, a Gelson's employee loudly announced that there were red pieces of tape on the ground in the checkout lines and to please wait at the red line to give all customers space and safety. Okay Gelson's, I've got news for you. The customer yelling at us in line wasn't standing at her designated red line on the floor, so why wasn't someone telling her to get on her red line? Why wasn't the "red line" being explained as customers approached the checkout? All cashiers could have easily asked each customer in line to please stand at the red lines on the floor and this whole incident could have been prevented. Gelson's claimed that the red lines spaced apart was for customer safety, yet when there was an irate customer yelling at us, where was our safety?! There was security personnel outside at the front of the store and at the toilet paper, yet where was security at the checkout lines where we needed security?! Gelson's, maybe you should stop and think about who could possibly be shopping in your store....not only am I a medical professional, but I am also a health educator. I could be an MD for all you know. I think I have enough common sense as to understand how close is too close to someone. Just wow! My question to Gelson's is, how is spacing people apart in line supposed to be for customer safety, yet you have crowded aisles with customers on top of each other, and better yet, the cashier is standing right across the counter when you are entering the checkout which is closer than the space between the pieces of tape on the floor! Gelson's, you claim that you care about customer safety, yet where was our safety while an irate customer was yelling at us, making us feel totally unsafe in YOUR store??? I have read the management responses here and yes, you have tarnished your reputation in the eyes of my family and I, and no, we will not be returning to your store any time soon due to the lack of safety and common sense we experienced at your store! read more

I picked up my turkey dinner for 12 on a Saturday for a Sunday early Thanksgiving. Well, the 18 lb. turkey was frozen solid and needed overnight to defrost. That is when I saw the blood and knew that the turkey was not completely "ready to eat" as the package said. I had to roast it two more hours to come up to cooked temperature. Quite disappointed in this lack of Gelson quality. All the side dishes were also frozen solid but could be reheated when needed. Not what I expected from this high end store. Not necessarily the store for the frugal, but matcha is hard to find. Therefore, with blinders on my shopper's eyes, I made my maiden voyage. Even though I'm sure a cartoon balloon appeared over my head "I'm a cheapskate" the staff was extremely helpful locating the tiny tin of matcha, also volunteering to call me with information about another hard-to-find item. Those blinders were necessary when passing the bakery. But I did sniff out some delicious, freshly made soup which was reduced in price! I'd go there for something special but I wonder if this rich lady's haven doesn't have that wine bar to serve as an adult ball pit. First visit to Gelson's in Long Beach. My husband enjoys shopping there, so i went on his behalf yesterday. I was amazed at the exorbitant prices, even for none specialty items, which are carried by any supermarket. I indeed, like quality, but how do you justify a VERY small plastic container of pieces of two melons and Strawberries for $13.00? This is just a simple example, everything that I bought was super expensive. Yes, is clean, yes, it is a nice store, but so is Trader Joe's, which offer specialty items as well at a fraction of a price compared to Gelson's. As I was driving back, and wondering how do they manage to justify their ridiculous pricing. I could not help and wonder if they like to maintain a certain kind of status in order to only attract an affluent clientele in the VERY diverse city of Long Beach. Long Beach city prides itself of its diversity, but, I find the diversity is certainly segregated into different classes and establishment such as this one, in my opinion, contribute to this kind of segregation, by only allowing the wealthy to shop in their stores due to their skyrocketing prices. Hi All, I went to Gelson's today, and wow is this a beautiful store! I went for squaw bread because I can't find it anywhere else, and YES, they had it! I saw Brayan Aquino, the Store Manager, making his way around the store to each department. I really liked seeing that because it looked like he was checking in with everyone. He was also very friendly. The Produce Department looked great! The Floral Department was beautiful! They had a lot of unique flowers and decorations. My daughter and I ordered coffee and some desserts. The service at the coffee shop was superb! Thanks for the great experience! read more

This review is only for the deli staff and usually the butcher. Both areas have fine selections but the consistently poor customer service and lack of any welcoming attitude is mine boggling. I shop here 2 to 3 times a week and has been acknowledged as I stand at the deli case very rarely. There are usually people working but no one looks up and offers help. Across-the-board they are not a friendly group of people. The butchers are also very busy in the back talking and doing their jobWithout acknowledging waiting customers. Once they do, they are usually fine. On a good note, the cashiers and their assistance are always very nice, pleasant and helpful. read more

Love this place. Great coffee bar & fresh bakery items from Renaud's. Certain pastries are buy one get one free after 5pm. Love their pizza! Decent salad & hot food bar ($8.99/lb and $6.99/lb on Tuesdays!) There's also a nice 2nd floor patio with an outside fireplace with lots of seating. Can't say that I buy groceries here though, just too expensive when Ralphs is right around the corner. Hoping they don't get swallowed up by the new giant Whole Foods across the street. I had an order for Hatch Chili's that has a glitch, but the manager Julio fixed it by getting freshly roasted ones on Saturday and then delivering them to my home. That is great customer service! I stop here several times a week for my salad fix in between jobsite visits and the quality and selections are top notch. The employees are always kind and helpful as well. The grocery, produce and deli selections are plentiful but the only thing keeping this from 5 stars is for some inexplicable reason, the soap dispenser in the men's room is often empty when I stop in. I'm not very ecstatic about this [Grocery Store], and yet I'm not unhappy about my experience here either. Prices here range for the affluent and then prices here are for the frugal; coupons sent repeatedly in the mail with discounts for certain amounts of purchases are helpful, and what I see in Gelson's Market's ads are not so much what I need and not so much want. This new trend of gourmet grocery stores or supermarkets is going to take some getting used to for me (not a Bristol Farm's or the like), yet at the same time, the fairest thing to say in my review is that Gelson's Market's sits somewhere in between Whole Foods, Trader Joe's & Sprout's; Gelson's Market too, has components that are similar to Von's The Market, Ralph's & others of that genre. If I needed a specialty item, was in the area & close by, (like the one on 2nd Street & PCH), I'd stop in again. Otherwise, I'd make a trip to the local market where items of the same brand & quality are offered up. Am I impressed by Gelson's Market, is the store clean & organized, is the staff pleasant, helpful and, are the other ethnic food offerings either trendy offerings by names of chains like Wolfgang Pucks Express etc., or just hot food items & sandwiches etc. appealing? This store is really as good as it gets. Bright, clean, well lit, and upper crusty. The produce section is impeccable. Everything is super fresh. I can never walk past their guacamole, mango salsa, and regular salsa without them jumping into the cart. The real reason I go here is for the fish counter. I have never gotten a fresher piece of fish ever. Simply the best! They have a sushi bar, a Wolfgang Puck pizza and panini counter, a carvery offering turkey, ham, and roast beef, tons of cold salads, and sandwiches. 2 50' buffets, one salad bar, one hot items, like meatloaf, stuffed cabbage, chicken entrees, etc. several soups, and chiles available each day as well. All of the items on the buffets are paid by the lb. So it would be easy to get carried away there. My Daughter and I love the beer and wine bar, and frequent it at each visit. I met my wife and kids for a lunch today at gel sons . They loved the decor inside and the lovely deck upstairs to eat at.it was exciting for them. But the food in the hot salad bar was not to good today The basmati rice had no flavor and the curry was cold and not as good as usual. The pumpkin soup was always good which I always get. My kids each got a slice of pizza 2.99 a slice !!!! They didn't rave about it. It was 100 ° upstairs and again no water upstairs. I called last week 8-20-14 and spoke to corporate office of gelsons and said hey we love that there was fresh water with lemons or mint in it upstairs and now you don't. Its what sets gelsons apart from vons or Ralph's, The rep called me back and said they would definitely bring water upstairs during lunch hours 11-1 but that was last week. I'm here today no water and not all umbrellas were put up. We had to eat in the sun. I felt like I was at food for less. Out total bill was over 40$ including some pastrys. But my wife said she would rather meet at roots cafe across the street spend half the money and have better food. And get grocerys s at trader joes. Ouch I said. But she did say she would get the prepared salads in the case if she was in a pinch putting a party together. So not all is lost. But I meet coworkers and shop a little here every week. So I spend about 60-80$ a week. X 47 weeks in a year I work. I may not visit gelsons as much as I normally do. Because nothing is drawing me in to shop or do lunch. The hot bar NEVER changes. Giving them 5 stars purely for their A-Mazing salad bar. Pretty much anything you can think of, they have it. Different greens from spinach to organic mixed greens to romaine.... to toppings like caprese, olives, nuts/seeds, veggies, eggs (with and without yolks!), tuna, chicken... it's literally endless! Whenever I'm too lazy to cook and want a healthy dinner, I head here to get a salad made to go. They also have pre-made salads like 5 grain rice salad, quinoa, edamame, etc. My favorite would be their Curry tofu salad - it's got some great seasoning to it. A bit of a downside is that it can be a bit expensive, in the $8/lb range. However, they offer $2/lb off on Tuesdays for their salad bar. And on Thursdays, it's $2/lb off their hot items like soups and things. No reason not to eat well and save a bit of cash at the same time! read more

I love Gelsons! They have the best hot food, sushi, deli and soup section ever! Even better than Whole Foods. The customer service is excellent and everyone is so nice and accommodating. They walk you to the product you are looking for. No bad attitudes here... unlike Vons where they have horrible customer service and terrible food quality. Yes, Gelsons is pricey so I certainly don't shop here for everything. But their fruit and vegetables are of high quality and i might treat myself to $4.99/lb Fuji apples (Yes! Outrageous but delicious.) I have to give a special acknowledgment to Barbara the cashier because she is so upbeat, jolly and friendly. She really makes my experience wonderful and she told me about a great $8 off coupon. The store is never crowded like TJs or Vons and is pristine. It's a very clean and upscale market .. Service was excellent .. Very kind and helpful employees in staff . However this market was on the smaller side .. And their bakery dept was small and pretty but had bvery limited baked treats ! It was July the fourth ...I was looking for an apple pie to bring to a friends bbq and they didn't even have any Apple Pie !!! In fact they had zero pies !! I'm so excited that Gelson's Market has opened up in Long Beach! It's like Whole Foods and Ralphs had a baby: you can buy fancy-pants chocolate, and then a box of Kellogg's Pop Tarts in the same store. But as other reviewers have mentioned, things are pricey here. Not by much; a certain brand of yogurt sold here was only ~25 cents more than Ralphs... so I guess it depends on 1, what you buy; and 2, what you consider "expensive." Some of the same brands of olive oil were actually cheaper than those same brands sold at Ralphs. Again, it depends on the product. *shrugs* Just shop smart :) The new store is beautiful, bright and clean, and overall has a great layout. Everyone who works there has been really friendly. I've been to another Gelson's, but this one is far beyond that. The store was packed when I went on a Saturday afternoon. When you first walk in, there's a small, closed off wine bar and then a HUGE deli section and hot bar. It gives the Whole Foods down the road a run for its money. With that said, the rest of the store is just a typical grocery store with a few fancier options. I know a few people compared this to Lazy Acres... I'm still a bigger fan of Lazy Acres though. I love going Gelson's they always have great products and it's pretty close to me (naples) and all the staff here are alway very helpful and prompt, i gave it a 3 stars because every time i come here and i get Debbie as the cashier I always get an attitude from her, not sure if it's only towards me or she's like this to everyone. I love Gelson's! In their first week, the sales are amazing. Get in and stock up while you can! I'm not a well-off lady who would consider doing all of my grocery shopping here, but the fact that Bristol Farms closed down recently reduced my ability to purchase specialty items. Whole Foods, down the road, has great organics, but lacks in much of the specialty department. Their mushroom section is incredible. They have tons of unusual produce and foods: Ask to try a taste of anything in the produce section and they'll be happy to accommodate. Their food bar is amazing, large, and offers a variety of ready-to-eat meals: Pizza, pasta, sandwiches, salads, hot meals, sushi, and there is a wine bar. Yes, you read that right: There is a bar at which you can sit and drink wine. I'm told this is the first in a Gelson's. Right now, two HUGE pieces of pizza fresh out of the oven for $3. Their cheese selection is decent too, though perhaps not quite as extensive at Whole Foods. Also, the employees in this section seemed to be enraptured in something behind the counter and didn't offer assistance, but I'd love to see more tastings, and not just Tillamook, which you can buy anywhere... They are really pushing Tate's cookies. Apparently from New York, some ladies and I discussed the brand while looking over our options. They have these cookies all over the store- you cannot miss them. There was a woman who said the Barefoot Contessa used them in a pie crust. Anyway, I bought the gluten free ones for a friend and wasn't impressed. The chocolate chip cookies that are GF from Trader Joes are much better (FYI). The top floor is a bakery with a sitting area. I didn't go up, but it was packed! While they lack in the organic/non-GMO area, which I must admit will keep most of my business at Whole Foods, I will certainly return to Gelson's and often. I love buying expensive cheese there like actual Parmigiano Romano. Yes it is expensive, but also delicious and perfect for pasta. $20/lbs for cheese is a lot, but well worth it. They have so many more gourmet grocery items it's unbelievable. Definitely stop by if you're up for spending a good amount of money and eating delicious. read more

Gelsons is one of my favorite grocers because of its convenience, layout, quality, bakery. The young man at the front door is very welcoming, The bagger was very polite and helpful, but unfortunately the checker was very cold and rude and I felt like I was infringing upon her space. She clearly did not want to help me. I was dressed appropriately I wear deodorant I am friendly, and I offended her by wanting to pay money to her establishment. It's a shame that I left feeling annoyed. This happens about 50% of the time there, and I always leave saying to myself I'm not shopping here anymore. But I try to remind myself that everyone is not friendly, and I have my own things to do, I don't let it ruin my day, and I keep coming back. I also have been trying to be more patient in general because of Covid, everyone is on edge, people are going through a lot, but in this case it was an early morning visit, no lines, the checkers were standing around talking, so I wouldn't attribute her behavior to Covid stressors. I would have given Gelsons four or five stars if it wasn't for this checker. read more
