This is a hidden gem in west side of Long Beach. Although it is a bake shop and their baked goods (especially their Spanish bread), their hot food is a must try. If there is one thing that is strongly recommended, it would definitely have to be their Mechado! Go check it out! read more

I was in the area and decided to check them out after the rave I see with these IG Reel reviews. I tried the Longanisa Pandesal...this was good and got the 1 star. Next was the chicken empanada, not my fave, it was a flaky dough but the filling I just did not understand. There were chunks of dark meat chicken then some random pieces of potatoes, carrots, and peas. There was no flavor with the empanada. Lastly, I tried their Brazo de Mercedes, it was not what I expected at all. The egg whites were too firm and the yolk filling was grainy. This also needed a bit more flavor. As a lover of Filipino food, the 2 stars is for the longanisa pandesal and cleanliness of the bakery. Service was lackluster and the lady at the register looked a bit annoyed at their customers, not sure if she wanted to be there today or maybe she was having a bad day. I am not giving up on this bakery, going to come back for their egg rolls. read more

Got to Gemma Bake Shop 30 mins before closing. Everything was wiped out. Goes to show you how good the place is. There were a few little things here and there that I was able to get. The owner was very kind and apologetic for the emptiness. I inquired about the lumpia and she stated it's made to order. Even though they were almost closing. So I was able to order some lumpia freshly cooked. And they were delicious. After a long busy day the place was still nice and clean and everyone was still very nice and gracious. Will be coming back for more. I will come earlier next time. read more

This is usually one of my favorite places to buy my sweet ube breads, halo halo, cassava cake and ube halaya which is a must each trip but this time they didn't have any so i asked if they were going to make some soon the lady said yes after 3 it will be ready i was so happy since its my favorite item in their store but i really do feel super upset since my ube halaya had pieces of hard stuff that hurt my teeth when i bit on it and theres a lot in my halaya after i started to check it for more scared i would chip a tooth not sure what it is but felt like tiny rocks my tooth hurts and I'm also very upset that i even went back to purchase the ube halaya i guess i will have to look elsewhere for it not worth a dentist visit read more

This is usually my go to for Filipino baked goods, empanadas and food but what's happening in the kitchen y'all?! They expanded their business but have gotten a little stingy on basics. Purchased half dozen Siapao which were all basically dough sprinkled with a tablespoon of meat...both chicken & pork. Also had to ask the cashier to warm up the siapao for me twice...ummm, what's a girl to do with a room temp siapao. This was my first time trying out Filipino food and the place looked tiny but they offered a variety of bread flavors and sweet bread flavors. I went with a group of friends and we decided on getting the Filipino egg rolls called, Lumpia. You could only order 25 of them and nothing less which I found weird but we all decided to share it among us 5 and ordered white rice on the side. The lumpia was good and I got full with only 4 and rice, which was surprising for me because I usually eat a lot. The bathroom was extremely clean and looks remodeled. The only thing I did not like was that my friend got charged $1 for a small container of sweet sauce to go, which I think it was ridiculous. So if you want sweet sauce I would recommend taking your own. read more

This will be my updated review after trying more things here. I recently got a 2 dish combo along with my friend and we were highly disappointed. I dont know the names of the dishes. But we both got 2 different menu items. And for me everything was just ok or eh. Pretty sad since I couldve went to tasty goody for a better option especially considering the price. Great service with amazing food. I tried their chicken empanadas because I saw the high reviews on yelp. Now I personally don't think that their empanadas are their strong suit. Their beef adobo and their hot plates are phenomenal. They also have a pork bun that taste very similarly to chicken char siu buns. Which is pretty yummy perhaps even better than the char siu buns. Pork adobo buns are definitely my recommendations. There are a bunch of other speciality foods that they have here. It was my first time trying Filipino food, period. So I was very very impressed by the quality of the food. Lunch is their peak hour as their line moves fast but there are a lot of people in there. STOP BY FOR FILIPINO BREAKFAST!!! This is a small hole-in-the-wall Filipino bakery and food corner. How did I find out about this place, you ask? One of my co-workers brought in a hot bag of pan de sal (sweet bread rolls) with some butter. The bread rolls smelled sooo good!! I took one bite and was SOLD!! I didn't even need the butter! I had to check this place out on my own to try some of their other goodies. Yes, this place gets four stars from me!! Now let me warn you, they have a tiny tiny parking lot shared by other establishments. There's street parking on the side but still, it can be frustrating finding a spot in the morning. There's a few small tables for dining in but it looks like most people take food to-go. Lots of Filipino baked goodies. Here are a few goodies I've tried and liked in the past: Puto (steamed rice cake), Sapin sapin (sweet layered glutinous rice and coconut milk dessert w/toasted coconut flakes), and Bibingka (sweet textured rice flour with coconut milk). They're all delicious here but just make sure you look at when it was made, especially during the summer months (It is a small hole-in-the-wall place that doesn't seem to receive much foot traffic after the morning rush hour). I haven't tried any of their cakes from here so I can't say vouch for them. Now, the MAIN reason I keep coming back to this place is for their Filipino breakfast combo! There isn't very many places, surprisingly in the South Bay, I like to go to for Filipino breakfast. Garlic rice, two eggs cooked in oil (yummy!!), and longanisa (sweet Filipino breakfast sausages). I've tried their tocino (sweet pork belly) but I love their longanisa much better! I take it to-go and have them at home with a freshly brewed cup of coffee!! Other Filipino dishes I've tried in the past for lunch includes chicken adobo and pancit but those were just okay. This place opens at 630am until 630pm Monday through Saturday and 630am to 530pm on Sunday. I would say the price range here is reasonable. Quick service here. They accept credit cards. read more

Okay, so I have been hesitant to write a review about Gemmae because I do have mixed feelings about it. The filipino food is aiiight, it's like any other filipino food turo turo restaurant, they got their kare kare, the sinigang, the pancit malabon, the garlic fried rice, etc... I've even gotten catering trays to go from here, like the pancit bihon and the lumpia shanghai and they accept orders as late as a day before pick-up which is so awesome when you're in a jam because you forgot about the potluck at the office the next day. =) The service is usually really good, what I mean about usually good is when there isn't a line, they cater to you really well. But, try to go there during their rush hour (like morning and lunch during weekends) and they call people out of order, I've gotten passed over many times because some older pushy Filipino lady is behind me wants to be next. But anyway, the whole point to this review is that I LOVE absolutely LOVE their cupcake cakes. My sister turned me on to not getting the usual mocha-chocolate sheet cake and when I met the owner/resident cake artist, Precy, I was convinced! I uploaded pics of the different cup cake cakes that we ordered from there and they were the talk of each party. I stopped by here with a coworker prior to eating down the street at Hungry Horse. I am not a big fan of filipino fast food, but they have it here. What they have that I do like are ensaymadas! I ordered 4 Cheddar Cheese Ensaymadas that were right out of the oven and wrapped. Unfortunately, I had forgotten about them until this morning. Warmed one up in the microwave and it was oozing with yummy cheese! I have had all kinds of ensaymadas but never one with cheddar cheese in the inside. Ensaymadas are filipino breads covered with cheese and sugar. Some have yummies in the inside like cream cheese, ube or macapuno (coconut). This was the first I had with cheddar cheese. The people were friendly and the shop was clean. I am giving the restaurant a 3 star because I only ordered the ensaymada and it was to go. I am specifically giving the cheddar cheese ensaymada a five star. It was perhaps the best ensaymada I have had..even a day later! They have all the typical filipino bakery items including pandesals and pandesals with ube. Enjoy!!! read more

A good place to get your halo halo if you crave for it, so far the best that I've tried, I've recommended it to some family and friends , I love it!. But, I used to order their lumpia shanghai by the tray, but noticed lately that it got thinner, hardly there's no meat on it, which was different taste from before. I can only feel or taste the lumpia wrapper. I wish they won't change the quality of their food. Love the new renovation of the bake shop. But, unfortunately the customer service hasn't improved. Every time I come here for breakfast I'm served by the same young Filipina and her personality sucks. She never smiles, she doesn't ask "May I help you" or "How can I serve you today" I'm sure she understands and speaks English clearly because as she was ringing up my items I could barely hear what my total was so I had to ask again and she replied rudely "$17.20" I wish I knew what her name is - may I suggest name badges for the employees working the counter. Because the other employees that help me are wonderful. If you're not a people person or if you're only willing to serve customers that speak Tagalog, then customer service shouldn't be your occupation in the US. read more

But, go at the crack of dawn. A lot of nurses come here, before they start their shifts so all the good stuff goes quick. Try the fresh bake bread.
