Solid choice for turo-turo food in Long Beach, Edna's Filipino Cuisine serves up a large variety of Filipino dishes, 7 days a week during lunch hours (10:00 - 15:00). My wife, her mom, and I stopped in for lunch and we really enjoyed it. My wife and I had stopped into Edna's a long time ago when we first moved to Long Beach, so it was time for a refresher. My wife and her mom shop at the nearby Tambuli for Asian groceries, so knew the parking wouldn't be too difficult in this part of town. The steam tables were jam packed with food, freshly prepared that morning, and there were some things I had not tried before. Thus, was nice to come with other folks. It took me a while to decide. The first steam table had 9 entrees: - Mom wanted Pinakbet which she later stated was good. - large strips of Lechon were chopped for you when ordered, and was a good addition to share. - other dishes included Kambing (available everyday), Pinapaitan, and Kaldereta (made with goat so we skipped it). The second steam table had 10 entrees: - Adobong Pusit - baby squid with adobo and squid ink sauce. I've come to realize that most Filipino restaurants don't have the time to remove the innards (guts and cartilage, which I've found to be inedible) while keeping the ink sacs, as they cook it. So I did it manually while eating, making this a finger food dish (very messy). Went great with the white rice, though. Mom made a good point that some folks consider it edible, similar to the shell of shrimps. - also chose the sinigang with pompano, since bangus was only available deep fried. Every entree with come with a cup of the soup, but if ordered as a choice, will come with a choice of fish piece (head, middle, or tail). The soup was good, very sour (which is how I like it) and not oily. -- final choice was Chicharon Bulaklak, deep fried pork intestines using the fatty mesentery tissues, to produce a flowery looking finger food. It came in a paper bag. It was the first time I tried it, and I liked it, though too greasy to have more than one piece. -- other choices were deep fried bangus, deep fried smelt, boiled peanuts, and a decent selection of sweet rice flour desserts. The ladies manning the steam tables were very friendly, and were receptive when I asked for a sample of the fried smelt dish. Servings were generous, and often came in separate soup containers to make eating easier. There is a large dining room with simple seating, and self bussing. It's a tried-and-true set-up that works well at other point-point places (so many in the area). Ended up getting two 2-combo plates ($14 each), served with white rice. Added 1/3 pound of Lechon Kawali for $6.48, which we all shared. In general the food was good, in large quantities, and presented with pride. Canned refrigerated sodas are only $1, so got cans of Sprite, Sunkist, and Squirt (maybe my favorite mass produced soda of all time). read more

Went in to grab food for lunch today. It wasn't busy. Super friendly lady working. Very attentive. Food was just ok. Did not like their rice there at all, so I ended up mixing it in with the ulam. The texture was just not good. The chicharon bulaklak didn't look old, but it didn't taste fresh. The bopis and the pinapaitan were good. I was just thrown off how green the pinapaitan was. This cozy joint serving Filipino food is one of my go-to when craving Filipino home-cooked food. I don't usually eat Filipino food unless it's made by my family, however, this joint is pretty close. The 2 side combo plate with lechon kawali - crispy pork belly, and dinuguan, a savory stew with pig ear and meat simmered in a rich, spicy dark gravy of pig blood, garlic, chili, and vinegar over white rice is as close to authentic like how my family makes it. Jen behind the counter was really nice about answering all of our questions. When you walk in, this place is "Turo-turo" style. Which basically translates to point point: meaning you point at what you want. The issue is that most dishes are not labeled so you don't really know what dish you're getting and what it's primarily made of. There are a bunch of tables to sit and dine after ordering. Although I was impressed by the selection, the food looked like it's been sitting there for a bit. We did try the goat and the beef mechado. The meat was not as tender as it should. Probably needed to simmer for a bit longer to soften it up. Prices are very affordable. Only thing is, the open at 10am and close at 3pm. So it's late to pick something up if you're on the way to work early, or they close too early to pick something up for dinner. Would prob try it again if ever in this side of town. read more

I specifically go there for my ube, turon, and all of their other sweets. Although bad for my health, they're amazingly delicious! I seldom buy their savory food but know they're authentic Filipino food. It's a small mom and pop store which is lacking ambiance. I rate a 5 because I love their dessert. read more

3.5 stars. Really cheap prices. Good selection served in a turo-turo (cafeteria) style. Given the location and the semi-shady facade, it's no surprise only Filipinos seem to frequent this place. That said, if you come early in the day, the food is fresh and a great value for your buck! This is for the TURON. 50 crispy, flaky perfectly fried sugar crusted rolls filled with banana and jackfruit for $30. It filled my car with a lovely funnel cake aroma and was a hit at my friend's birthday BBQ. Much love to the Edna team for taking the order with no advanced notice. It was so fresh and delicious! Not too sweet and the fruit was nice and tender but not overcooked. The way they wrapped the rolls resulted in a satisfying crunch along with some nice croissant like layers when you bite into one. There is nothing like authentic tasting Filipino food and no, not all Filipino food are created equal. I had their egg roll and kare kare with a side of white rice taken to-go. It was delicious and so filling. I couldn't put down the egg rolls and the vinegar that came with it, hands down, one of the best i've tasted. The rice was cooked perfect, it wasn't mushy and there was still a bit to it. The veggies in the kare kare soaked up so much flavor. The prices are affordable and parking was easy! The restaurant: It's a hole in the wall place. It seemed ok so we wanted to give this place a try. The food: The food is sitting under heat lamps, just sadly sitting there waiting to be scooped up on to a plate. A lot of the food looked not fresh and not so appealing but I still wanted to give it a chance. The only food that seemed freshly made was the steamed rice but everything else looked old. My brother said it looked like recycled food! The food wasn't even hot. It was lukewarm at best. I had a soup which tasted old kind of fermented, the beef steak was salty, the kare-kare flavor was good but the food was not hot at all. I don't know if that is how Filipino food supposed to be eaten lukewarm? Because I really didn't like it at that temperature. The noodles were cold I wish they were hot. The staff: They were very friendly and kind. Conclusion: Unfortunately I cannot recommend this place. The staff were very nice though. It's just the food did not sit right in our bellies. Edna's Filipino Cuisine is a small hole in the wall in Long Beach offering a Filipino food for some great prices. Their combo 1 is $5 and combo 2 $7. You can pay 50 cents extra for lechon and all noodles. Filipino food can be quite pricey at times and so I was pleasantly surprised with their good deals. It's always nice to see affordable Filipino food. On my trip here they had a variety of well known Filipino dishes such as fresh lechon kawali, bbq pork sticks, menudo, pancit, tinola and menudo. I chose to get bbq pork stick and lechon kawali. Their combo 1 comes with one bbq pork stick. The bbq pork stick was actually my favorite. It was very lean and good in flavor. The lechon kawali was also not bad. I could tell they just fried it that day and it was quite crisp. Very decent lunch for a decent price, I was a fan. For dessert, I got their turon. The banana egg rolls were also not a bad deal for 50 cents each. Just like the lechon kawali it was freshly fried and nice and crispy. I guess when it comes to restaurants like this - it's a hit or miss with the quality or the timing of the freshness of what's offered or being served. The first time I cam here, it wasn't a pleasant experience. Today's lunch though, was definitely an improvement. Walking in, I could see that most of the serviing dishes looked to be fresh and it was. I had a one item combo ($4.50). Rice and Pork Adobo. The Adobo was tender, juicy and not too little, or too much vinegar. I would have loved to see more fatty pieces but I was happy with what I got. And I got a lot for less than $5 - take a look at the photo. No Air in the dining room - it gets warm so either dine and dash or wear comfortable, cool attire. As for parking, it shouldn't be an issue in the strip mall lot or the lot next to the Tambuli Market. Street parking too but it's on Santa Fe - a lot of fast moving traffic. read more

Let me start off by saying the food was great, abundant, well displayed, very tasty,well prepared, and kept me wanting more. Until today or this event. I had really not tried Filipino food. Since it was a private event and The restaurant was closed. At the time Kristine will still bringing out food. The restaurant already smelled delicious. And a table look very presentable. But I didn't know that she was not done bringing out all the food. In the next 20 minutes. The food has doubled. Luckily I had gone there hungry. But I knew I cannot eat that much. Now thought some may argue about that. But the food coming out. Sausage, shrimp, fish, eggrolls at least I think that's what they are, a crispy Pata, There was mushrooms, eggplant, tomatoes, broccoli, small meat egg rolls, skewers, Fried pork, there was desert, even ice cream, I know there is more stuff but I can't recall at this moment. Since all of us were yelpers. We had our phones out taking pictures taking videos. Finally all the food was out. And we all sat down. And the phone went away. I had mine out still. I didn't know that you eat with your hands. I learned very fast. Put my phone away. And I commenced to eating. I kept a good pace, I believe I put a good dent. I even left my leave clean. Later I tried the orange one. After tasting it. I grab two. It was a melon drink as in like a cantaloupe. It was so good. Had pieces or strands of melon in it. A new found love. So by now you would think we will be stuff. And we are but there's more stuff coming out. Like dessert. Now they have banana Frita. Which means fried banana which is super Yum. That is where names for them other stuff there also Yum. By this time might have a food coma.but I think I'm just getting delusional. I was holding back but Kristine had to pull out the ice cream. She went after my weakness. Now I love ice cream but I don't like all flavors. I'm basic I like my vanilla mix with different things. Like fruits and nuts and stuff like that. But the ice cream she brought out I never had and it was good. I had the melon is a green melon that was really good and then this one, it was a jackfruit flavor. And I don't know what a jackfruit is. She told me had nuts in it. So I tried it. It was good I still don't know what jackfruit is. But I know if he's good. There was a purple yam also and that was good also. But later I have a little bit of coco Rico. A coconut flavor ice cream. She put on my make up and told me I had to try it with a banana frita. And I did. It was super yummy. By now I'm overly stuffed. But the apple of my mouth and put me on the roaster. I am beyond done. Food wise I had reached my limit twice. Now this event was not just about food. It was about friendships. Most people knew each other. I I knew only three. And 2 were newer than the first one. I made new friends. And I guess that's as great as a great meal. Before leaving we all took a picture together. It was the selfie. And if you notice. We are all stuffed but we all have big smiles on our faces.
