(Can't go wrong treating for coffee and breakfast sandwiches..hint hint). Excellent service by counter staff who will listen to personal preferences to customize your order offering coffee, hot chocolate, tea, fresh bagels, and sandwiches. My best friend brought me here while I was visiting Jersey. This place is so cute! Bagel shops aren't a big thing where I'm from but this place is better than any sandwich shop near me. Great prices, and absolutely darling staff with big hearts! Called in for a pickup order and had to run on foot before the store closed because of car troubles. Parking on the weekends can be tough but obviously expected, even with all of the spots and street parking, they're just that good! Weekdays can always get a spot. Try to avoid. I was on my way to work and stopped in to grab a bagel. Saw that there were only 3 people on line ahead of me and that the line would move. Fifteen minutes later, I had two people ahead of me and was not even acknowledged. Only two people were working in the store. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and asked if someone called out and was told rudely no, so I walked out. Who doesn't like bagels? Especially if you're from Jersey. While I have certainly found wider selections of bagels, Gem's delivers consistent, quality bagels and sandwiches across their locations. If you are headed to Sandy Hook, passing by the area, or just looking for a good breakfast - make sure Gem's is the first place you go. They might also be the only place you end up visiting for breakfast. Nothing beats their classic pork roll egg and cheese on a bagel, toasted of course. I've been at places that make you wait forever too but they seem to have the art of breakfast sandwiches down to a science which is why they have been so successful across Monmouth County. If you get a chance on your second visit, go back for one of their specialty sandwiches. I personally enjoyed their Raritan Rocket from the Hazlet location - named for their local High School. This particular Gem's which is less than a block away from my house is very disappointing. We just moved here. We were very excited to try it out. The first time we went we LOVED it!! We went back the next day and I ordered what is titled on there bagel window inside as something of 'Cheese Eggable' I said 'Cheese Egg Bagel' because I am not local and the day before I wasn't corrected or anything. So the worker who was different that day said "it's just a cheese bagel, it's not made with egg" and she wasn't nice about it either. So I tried to point out what it says on the title because it says 'egg' and that's confusing and she said "it's just cheese" and was very rude about it and didn't even want to hear me point out how its titled there, she argued with me and I admit I fumbled with my words because I'm trying to pronounce the weird title of 'cheese eggable' and explain why I ordered it that way. She wasn't even willing to listen or respond to that or show any professionalism. So this particular bagel is actually the Asiago Bagel. First off, you really need to title it as that. Because if you order online it is not 'cheese bagel or 'cheese eggable' it's that; so once again it validates my point of someone who is working there who is extremely rude and correcting a customer and says the wrong name again. Just because Asiago is cheese; if you're going to be that particular with people ordering from you, that are not familiar with your names, then call it the exact name always. For a customer who is not local or familiar with Gem's, it's really unfair and bad service. Shame on you! I did learn from this experience I like Gem's a lot but it's very unfortunate I would NEVER go back into the one by my house for being embarrassed and mistreated by the service. You should never correct your customers in a harsh way, let them explain and if there is a misunderstanding, be willing to correct it even if it includes a bagel that has multiple names. And truthfully, the nature to an item that has multiple names then it's going to be known by more than one, all the more reason not to correct but be willing to communicate and explain the item professionally. read more

Terrible customer service with outrageous prices. Won't let customers use bathroom "due to Covid." There is no state mandate to close off bathrooms (especially in a restaurant) because of Covid. Was told by employee "I don't make the rules." There was a better way to address that. To add insult to my injury, my toasted bagel with butter cost $5.75 because is was a "special" bagel. They were extremely busy, but service was extremely fast. I got a plain bagel with cream cheese, can't go wrong, right? Dead wrong. The bagel was like one you'd get at a grocery store. I had originally tried Gem's Bagel in Hazlet and thought it was pretty good. So I was happy when a Gem's Bagel was opening closer to where I live. However, after trying it a few times and having a hard time finding the business on google and yelp, I quickly realized that it might not be the same chain. The first two times I tried this place, the bagels were just ok. Seemed a bit stale but I figured maybe I went at an off time or got an old batch. So 3rd time's supposed to be a charm right? Nope, this last time I went, again the bagels were hard and stale (at 9am) and this time as I was having my microwaved bagel (since it was the only way to salvage it), I found a long blond strand of hair that was baked into the bagel. Neither my husband or I have blond hair nor is it a hair that just landed on it. It's full on baked into it. Needless to say, i'll be driving out to Red Bank to my original favorite bagel spot (Atlantic bagel) and avoid this place. read more

Gems is truly a gem. My wife and I order from them every Sunday and recently they forgot to include something in our order. We Called to let them know and the owner (i think) came himself to drop off the missed item. This is really not about the food-which was OK --egg sandwiches and drinks. What was not good was the lack of cleanliness in the place-the bathroom was disgusting! That bathroom had not been clean in awhile-floor and toilet disgusting-mirror so dirty you couldn't see yourself. If I had looked around before eating I would never have eaten here.
