I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was unacceptable. The service was extremely poor from start to finish. Our server never checked on our table, and every time we needed something, I had to ask other servers to track him down. Even something as simple as getting a bucket of ice required multiple requests before we finally received it. What was most concerning, however, was that my 16-year-old daughter was served an alcoholic drink. This is a serious mistake that never should have happened and could have had serious consequences. Good service starts with attentiveness, and basic food and alcohol safety should never be overlooked. Between the lack of service and the dangerous oversight of serving alcohol to a minor, this was a very disappointing experience. I came here with my aunts, mom, sibling, and cousin for a evening outing. My aunt had such a great time at this restaurant with her coworkers and had high raves. However, the night we came, our waiter, Ethan was awful. He forgot to bring out our sides. He only brought out salad, the meats for the rest of my party, side vegetables, a small amount of sauces, and some rice. Since I'm vegan, I ordered a side order of rice sticks and japchae. I wasn't able to eat any of the soup since they are not vegan, the broth is made from beef despite having tofu in it. The japchae was disgusting and tasted like it was cooked in old grease. The primary flavor was old grease and nothing else. It was terrible. The restaurant does not have any soy sauce which is strange. Rice sticks were okay, but nothing spectacular. It tasted store-bought doused in brown sauce. The sauces that Ethan brought out were in a tiny tray and it was not easy to pour out without the sauces mixing into each other. The green tea salt was basically green-colored salt. There was a small amount of sesame seed oil too. I let my aunts, mum, sibling, and cousin cook their meat on the grill first before I cooked the side vegetables to avoid cross contamination. Ethan brought out a clean grill so I could cook my vegetables. I equally enjoyed myself with the family, but it would have been better if Ethan had brought out all of our food. I don't think it was worth $31 pp for dinner. Ethan forgot to bring out my sibling's dessert. He told us that he was going to bring it out in a takeout box, and within 30 seconds, he was bringing the dessert to the table when we were paying for our meal. Considering that we've been to this location and the Houston location multiple times in the past, it was very different and unexpected to receive the tofu soup like that. Always have to load up on the galbi (thinly sliced ribeye) , spicy pork bulgogi, thinly sliced brisket, etc. Also love their bonchon and sides like jap chae noodles, soondubu soup, and dumplings. Ethan is the far worst waiter here! We came in as an party of 6 women. The host tried to sit all 6 of us in a small booth so we can be cramped so we asked to be sat at a table. When we got to our table we waited for 10 minutes before a waiter came over and took our order. Ethan, a young Asian guy who is tall with short hair came over and began to take our order. He took each order from each side of the table (3 to 3). He explained the dinner price and concept to all of us. He told us, we each cannot order 6 different items however only 3 each & noted that it's unlimited all you can eat. For the appetizers we ordered the: deep fried mandu, katsu fish, KFC, jap chen, rice sticks, hotteok. I noticed we received our meats but the KFC never came out and we had to keep repeating and reminding Ethan about bringing it out. He finally tells us in the middle of our meal that the kitchen ran out of KFC at a Korean restaurant. The fish katsu had an aftertaste as if it was fried in old oil. The jap chen didn't come as pictured with vegetables on top and it didn't taste freshly made to order. The rice cakes were okay, nothing spectacular. Ethan took our order once and never came back to our table. We had to keep flagging him down as he momentarily passed our table. I kept thinking to myself how is it AYCE, if the waiter refuses to wait on us???! Ethan is very forgetful and unknowledgeable, my sister is vegan and she wanted to have the tofu soup. As she asked Ethan what was the broth of both soups, Ethan proceeds to inform us he doesn't know. He asks the kitchen and both soups are made with a beef broth! What an oxymoron! Why have tofu in a meat broth? That beats the purpose of tofu! So my sister ends up having practically nothing to eat. Ethan never brought out of dinner menu sides such as the whipped potato, kimchi, and pickle. It was only when we noticed the table next to us had it and by the time we noticed Ethan had given us our checks. Aside from our crappy waiter, I enjoyed the beef belly honey soy, the pineapple chicken, & pork riblet. Ethan will make your experience unforgettably sour, annoyed, & unpleasant. For the price of the dinner menu you shouldn't have to deal with an incompetent waiter who refuses to wait on a party of 6, customers shouldn't have to flag down, keep reminding and repeating their needs to a waiter, and sit for several minutes waiting for a no show waiter just to eat. At the end of the dinner, I ordered the hotteok dessert and one last order of mandu. None of it came out in an appropriate amount of time. We sat waiting, waiting, and waiting.. we tired of being ignored. Ethan takes no time bringing over our checks. We tell him again where's the dumplings and dessert. He reminds us that he's going to check and get it sent out in a to-go box. We hand him over our cards and there's still no to-go box. He comes over to bring us pens and we remind him again. It's the more reminding him and his forgetful mind that sends us over. It is definitely not worth $31 per person if we never get what we're supposed to get on the AYCE. The first time I ever came to this location, I was blown away by the service, absolutely stunned, I was with my girlfriend at the time and we were celebrating our anniversary. The food was amazing and we enjoyed our experience. I would give this place 5 stars, except ever since our first experience, I have never had worse experience at this location in my life, the servers after our very first one have never been attentive, they take forever to ever check back in on us and they are suppose to offer to replace your grill but they never do anymore. I wanted to introduce a friend of mine to Korean bbq, and since her birthday had just passed, I offered to treat her to a meal here. I had dined at the midtown location several times, but it had been awhile, so I was excited to revisit Gen. Lunch was fairly dead. Upon entry, there was no host, and we had to wait a bit to be greeted, which I was wary of at first. But the rest of the experience for the meal was pretty good. For $20, the all you can eat lunch option is a steal with plenty of variety despite the less options. The free appetizers here are rather weak. The mandu dumplings came out room temperature, the fried chicken came over cooked and burned. The japchae is the only one I really enjoyed. The banchan selection is rather limited, but the cabbage kimchi is tasty as well as the cold corn mashed potatoes. Yum! They weren't able to provide whole lettuce leaves when I requested it, which was a bit strange as that is a kbbq staple. Instead they have a chopped up leaf salad with dressing instead to use. I did request some without the dressing at least. The meat portions are small, but hey, it's AYCE so no biggie with just the two of us. We tried a variety of beef and pork items and marinaded and non marinated options. I loved the brisket and beef belly, and my friend absolute enjoyed the pork belly. By the end of the meal, she was cooking and cutting up meat on her own like a pro! Our waitress was fairly attentive and took care of my various special requests. She even let us order a few equivalent items off the dinner menu because my friend had an allergy that prevented her from ordering a few lunch items. I've been to many Korean BBQ places and unfortunately this place was mediocre in comparison. The waitress was nice but one of the staff spilled soy sauce on my husband and did not even acknowledge it or apologize. The raw BBQ meats themselves were okay, but i felt there was a lack of service when it came to not oiling the pan, swapping out new grill trays, assisting with cooking, etc. The cooked side dishes were just okay, but the Korean fried chicken was just basically frozen popcorn chicken with sauce on it so it was not true Korean fried chicken and the ttekboki rice cake was undercooked so the food quality felt inconsistent. You don't realize how happy I was when I found out they opened a korean bbq restaurant on the southeast side of Houston! There's virtually zero other places to get that kind of food in the area so it was definitely a much needed addition. I've been here about 4 times now since they opened with friends and family, and to the other Gen korean bbq in midtown a countless number of times so I'm pretty familiar with the menu. Overall I can say that this location is just as good as the midtown location, and maybe even a tad better just because of the convenience in location. Must try items: Beef belly Beef brisket Signature beef galbi Beef bulgogi Hangjungsal (Pork cheek/jowl) Gen Premium steak Calamari steak Hotteok (Korean sweet filled mini pancake w/ cinnamon apple filling and powdered sugar on top for dessert) Beef tongue (the Webster location doesn't serve this unfortunately, but get it if they ever start serving it) Things to note: All the food is AYCE so come HUNGRY to get your money's worth Ask for their sliced jalapenos and garlic to cook with your meat for more flavor Try their korean fermented chili paste to dip in besides their usual 3 sauces that you get automatically (sesame oil, green tea salt, sweet soy) Use the radish paper to make little wraps w/ the meat, garlic, jalapeno, and sauce All the banchan are good, but don't eat too much of them and get yourself full off of those If you're really hungry, start off with the thinly sliced quick cooking meats, they are usually done in less than a minute Cook the non-marinated meats before the marinated meats, the sauce from the marinade tends to burn quickly, and requires more frequent grill changes Lunch is cheaper than dinner prices So far the service has been solid on every visit I've come here. Khoa was our server this past visit, and I believe he was training this new girl who also did a great job. They never let our water go empty, always bringing extra napkins as needed, took out all of the empty meat plates quickly, and changed our grill frequently. 10/10 would recommend Gen Korean Bbq Webster! Worst Korean BBQ we've ever experienced. I would not recommend this location. We only had an hour to eat, which is usually plenty at other chains (they have a 2 hour limit anyways). It took them 25 minutes to even bring out the first round (and only like half of it, we had to ask for some meat that was missing). The beef tongue was cut unevenly which actually made it taste bad. I LOVE beef tongue - it's my favorite cut and I've literally never had disappointing beef tongue until I came here. I should have taken a picture of the wagyu we were given: it was literally just strips of fat with a thin strip of cartilage and some select-grade meat at the end (that had zero marbling). It was 90% fat and was basically poorly cut select beef belly masquerading as "wagyu". We sent it back because it was literally not edible. We only received one round of food in the hour we were there. We had ordered a second round, but we had a hard cutoff for our time limit so we had to cancel it and leave after it hadn't shown up after 20 minutes since we wouldn't have had enough time to cook it. Mind you, we had ordered shin ramen as part of the second round and even that didn't show up. So basically, we spent over $50/person to eat a little bit of poor quality meat. We left hungry and disappointed. I would not come here at all but definitely don't come if you're in a bit of a time crunch. read more

My husband and I just moved from CA to TX and decided on a date night to GEN. We have been to many GEN Korean BBQ's in LA and Las Vegas so we know what to expect when it comes to both the food and the overall dining experience. We recently visited this GEN restaurant and unfortunately, our experience didn't meet expectations. First, the food took much longer than expected to be served. We ordered a pitcher of mixed Soju and lemonade but when it arrived, the pitcher was dirty, and there was black stuff floating in the drink. It was pretty off-putting. So we exchanged it to a pitcher of beer instead. We also had to wait around 30 minutes for a pitcher of beer, which was frustrating considering the restaurant was fully staffed. To top it off, our table was not properly cleaned when we were seated, which gave a less-than-pleasant first impression. I understand that restaurants can get busy, but it would've been nice to see more attention to cleanliness and better service. The overall experience left a lot to be desired. We have been to so many Gen BBQ restaurants so we hope the restaurant takes this feedback into account to improve both the service and cleanliness. read more

The suits behind Gen did a solid for those of us in the NASA and Galveston realms when they opened a Clear Lake branch. My first time there back in May was truly amazing to the point I dared not return constantly to preserve the eatery's delicious allure. Zoom to six months later. I tried Gen once again last weekend after all the grand opening kinks and jitters. Must I say that there's no such thing as a sophomore jinx. Purist foodies would scoff at the idea of doing KBBQ solo, but I loved having been able to order all the meats that my heart, mouth, and stomach desired without even the slightest opposition from friends, family, and a significant other. *Plays comedic drum beat* I'm kicking myself for not getting my waitress's name, but she was really stellar at making sure I was well accommodated during my second go-around. The grill kept going out which led to the raw meat having to sit on the grill for over 10 minutes to cook. Tried ordering something already cooked and was told that they are out of it.....? Price on food wasn't so bad. $30 per person- all you can eat. However the drinks are very expensive. $20 for 1 basic cocktail drink. That drink was not worth $20. I've never had such a disappointing Korean bbq experience as bad as I've had at this location. Upon entering I was quickly hit with a "you need to scan the barcode to join waitlist". Not even a greeting. When we finally got seated we got out bonchon fast at least. Sad I can't say anything else that night came quick. It took about an hour to get our soju and idk why but we were a table of 3 big dudes and when we ordered the short rib they only brought 2 small pieces. I asked the waiter if that was it and he laughed and nodded. Safe to say we ate it in less than 5 minutes and it took another 20' for our next round to come out. Once again I asked for It multiple order of the short rib and they yet again only brought out two pieces. Meat quality was also questionable. The best cuts we had were the galbi short rib and the beef belly. The brisket looked so sad. We only got one order the whole night I had to pull someone to the side and ask them to please bring multiple orders because it was a busy night and we wanted eat and go so other people can sit. I will say that the downtown location is a bit better when it comes to the actual cooking, instead of having to wait and change out the burner every now and then they just provide you with an onion to get rid of the gunk.
