I went to Shik Do Rak a couple weeks ago for the first time in many years. I live right by Koreatown now and hadn't been back since my parents moved out of the Valley. Having grown up there, though, I appreciate how good this place is, especially by suburban standards. Just high quality Korean food, whether or not you're in the mood for barbecue. The restaurant is spacious, plain, and inviting, the kind of no frills joint you might find in a strip mall in any vaguely Korean neighborhood. Service is good, fast and polite, and the food is delicious. I remembered Shik Do Rak as a Korean barbecue place, but my mom and I went for lunch and had bibmbap, naengmyun, and chicken, all of it was great. Loved the yeolmu bibimbap, a barley rice bowl with young radish and daenjang and a whole lot of vegetables to mix in, plus the various banchan--fish cake, cabbage and cucumber kimchi, bean sprout and radish namul, a warming beef broth. The naengmyun and dak bulgogi came as a lunch set, and both were super satisfying. Chewy noodles in cold broth, tender grilled chicken with plenty of flavor from the sweet and salty marinade. I don't make it out to Northridge that often, but I'm sure I'll be back to Shik Do Rak. It's low-key a Valley Korean institution, and I look forward to my next visit, even if it's years away. read more

A no-frills KBBQ spot in Northridge for reasonably priced and delicious KBBQ. I shared the non-marinated brisket and pork belly, which was perfectly filling for 2 and quite satisfying. The banchan selection was pretty standard, and service was very efficient and they would regularly help us cook our meats too. At times, they were so efficient that we almost felt a bit rushed, but it was also a busy Saturday dinner. Of note, they do add an automatic 18% gratuity for parties of 4 or more. I came here by myself a couple weeks ago because I'd been dying to try this place and finally made it in. Everything was honestly delicious and lived up to the hype. The prices are a bit high for one person, but the quality and flavors definitely make it worth it. My server was amazing and went above and beyond with service and recommendations, a little more attentive than I even expected, but still really appreciated. I did accidentally burn myself on the soup, so just be careful because it comes out really hot, but it was still so good I kept eating it anyway lol. We come here about once a month and have a great experience every time. Portions are enormous - the 2 person combo feeds 3 of us with plenty of leftovers! I always ask for ssamjang and between that and the other sauces, there are so many combinations of flavors you can create, using the dukbossam to make delicious little bites out of the meat and banchan. Service is always friendly - the staff is clearly busy as the restaurant is almost always full, but they seem to recognize us and are always kind and accommodating with everything we ask for. It does get a bit loud inside especially when big parties are around, so don't expect a quiet meal. But we've come to prefer this place over a lot of the AYCE Korean BBQ options, as the food seems higher quality and you get so much of it that it's more than we can eat anyway. Sikdorak isn't the best Korean restaurant out there, but when I don't have time to drive all the way to LA, it's one of the few spots in the Valley I go to when craving Korean food. The meat prices are reasonable for what you get. Today, we had a simple lunch set -- my companion ordered the Galbi + Doenjang-jjigae combo, and I had the Hot Stone Bibimbap. The galbi was tasty, the soybean stew a bit salty, and the bibimbap portion was generous enough to share. The lady working there was rather blunt and unpolished. Overall, I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 -- not quite at the level of LA's top Korean restaurants, but still one of the better Korean options in the Valley when you want something comforting and nearby. read more

It's unfair to add a tip without informing the customer, especially when I was charged for something I didn't agree to. The bill was originally $80 and unexpectedly increased to $94, which is unacceptable. This experience was very upsetting. After checking reviews, I realized this has happened to other customers as well, so it clearly wasn't an isolated incident. That's really disappointing. I used to love this restaurant, and my family and I would dine here often. However, after this experience--and bringing it to their attention--I no longer feel comfortable returning. It's been awhile since I've dined here. Took my cousin & her husband here for dinner and quality of the meats here are better compared to the other Korean BBQ joints I've had in the valley. We usually order the pork belly to cook on the grill at out table and the Galbi or Bulgogi we ask to cook in the kitchen. It's cooked evenly when cooked in the kitchen. Unprofessional and poorly managed!! We dined in as a party of 5, Ordered 3 entrees, which was sufficient for our table. When asked the waitress for banchan refill, she refused....explicitly stating that it was because we "didn't order enough food." This was not communicated as a policy beforehand and was delivered with unnecessary attitude. That is not standard practice nor acceptable customer service. An 18% gratuity was added automatically without clear disclosure or verbal notice. Auto-gratuity may be common for larger parties, but transparency is basic courtesy--especially when service is lacking. Management should take responsibility for how policies are communicated and enforced. Either staff are not properly trained, or this behavior is condoned. Neither reflects well on the restaurant. Quietly adding gratuity while limiting service creates the impression that customers are being penalized rather than welcomed. There are many Korean restaurants that handle portion policies and gratuity with clarity and professionalism. This restaurant is definitely not one of them!! read more

We just had another amazing dinner last night. I can't stop thinking about it! Everything was fantastic from start to finish. The meats were incredibly fresh and flavorful -- the marinated short rib and pork belly grilled up perfectly at the table, with that perfect char and juicy tenderness. The banchan side dishes were generous and full of variety -- I especially loved the kimchi and the spicy cucumber salad. Even the rice and lettuce wraps were spot-on. What really made the experience special was the outstanding service. The owner, John, was fantastic! He came by our table multiple times to make sure everything was perfect, shared some great grilling tips, and even brought out some extra sides on the house. Food: I always wonder how much lbs they usually dor for each Duk Bosam Combination, we usually order combo B2 and I feel like it had less meat this time compared from the last time.
