What I miss most about working at the office downtown, is ordering from Chinatown. I've now found my fix for authentic hand pulled noodles in the suburbs. Tried several different dishes as my eyes are bigger than my stomach and I can never decide. Glad I did! Everything was delicious and had wonderful flavors. The hand pulled noodles have the prefect texture. The hot sour dumpling soup was wonderfully flavorful and dumplings juicy. The pork sandwich was a delight and was even better dipped in to dumpling soup. The lamb skewers were nicely seasoned, not overly spicy but right amount of heat, and grilled to perfection. If your looking for authentic Xi'an style Chinese food, I highly recommend giving Gene's Chinese Flatbread Cafe a try. For those looking for typical American Chinese style food (think Kowloon), these flavors and dishes may be out of your comfort zone. Though I encourage you to experiment and expand your palate. To begin with, ORDER THE NUMBER 4. Catch that? Get the number 4. OK onto the review. I had to pick one restaurant to take my mom to when she was visiting and thought picking my favorite restaurant in the Boston area would be hard. So many great options to choose from! Then I remembered Gene's and my choice was easy. Gene's is in a league of its own. There's great food, then there's authentic perfectly done hand-pulled noodles smothered in spicy garlic sauce. The texture is flawless, the flavor is explosive, oh and did I mention Gene is almost always actually there overseeing the production of these amazing noodles? I've never had anything like them. I always crave them. Raining, sunny, blizzarding, I always crave Gene's. By the way it's worth restating that everything on the menu is good, but if you've never been here before, ORDER THE NUMBER 4. I've gone with groups before and everyone orders whatever looks best and as soon as they taste #4 they go "OH I should have ordered that!" The lamb skewers are really tasty too (not on the menu that I can see). Pretty spicy though. I just can't rave about this place enough. It's a must try in the area. WOW WOW WOW... I can't believe how amazing this place is. I love old tools and food so anytime I have to take a road trip to pick up a tool off of Craigslist I always look for something delicious to try and as luck would have it this was about 5 minutes out of my way. After reading everyone's reviews I knew I had to try the #4 hand pulled noodles... let me tell you they did not disappoint. How could something with oil,chili powder, and cilantro be so delicious I have no idea but it is truly a flavor mosh pit in your mouth. I also got a pork slider, simple yet tasty. To go I got their sweet and sour dumpling soup. Fantastic flavor, mayhaps a bit too vinegary,but more highs than lows. I'm already planning a half baked adventure that will put me close enough to this place to justify a return trip. I don't normally give 5 stars to a place after my first trip, but Gene's was everything I wanted and more. I walk in and Gene is at the counter smiling and ready to take my order. Being a chef myself I asked some questions about the food and how they do their noodles and all that, and when you hear this man talk about his food you know that it's been made with love. This is not your average Americanized Chinese place with sweet and sour chicken and general tso's either. Eating here transported me right into Xi'an, China. The chefs hand pull your noodles to order just like they do over there, and they are amazing! Probably the best noodle dish I've ever had. Also only $6. The hot and sour dumpling soup is really good as well, and I may be mistaken, but it seems it was made with a dashi which gave one of my favorite soups an awesome umami taste twist. The lamb kabobs at $1.50 a piece were also amazing. All their ingredients are top notch, fresh, and everything there is made in house daily (including their amazing chili oil). And the prices are more than fair for the quality you get (Tip: cash only). The tea eggs and pork stomach are also very tasty and perfectly done. I will coming back to this place quite a bit, and if you haven't yet you should as well. read more

But if you have been used to the American Chinese food and get something similar, you should go to panda express instead. The spicy noodles are really tasty, also like the pickled eggs. I really like North West Chinese awesome hand pulled noodles and spicy cumin lamb! So I thought this place may be it! Came in and ordered #16! The guy quickly gave a couple of pulls to an already prepared small ball of dough! But REALLY THICK CUT. The final dish "lamb cumin spicy noodles" came in: covered with large amount with pickled sprouts then very very little lamb and bit of oily sauce! This is a great, unassuming restaurant. I've had almost everything on their relatively short menu, but nothing disappoints. Sure, I have my favorites (#5 baby!), but everything on their menu seems to be great. If you've walked passed this and just ignored it, do yourself a favor and stop in for lunch. Especially on cooler/cold days, you can't beat this for lunch. This particular location has a few dishes unavailable at the main location that I go to (Boston). These additional dishes are great, but one warning is that they can be overly-spicy, though not hot. It's a bit hard to describe if you don't know what I mean. Think extra spiced, but not with hot spices and you may get a picture. Only negative is that you shouldn't wear white/light colored shirts since it tends to be a bit messy. We went to try this place this past weekend, and it was a nice experience, but I couldn't give it 5/5 stars. It's between a 3 and 4 stars for me. Here's the summary: Pros: -delicious tasy food -excellent customer service (front desk guy, i think owner, is very friendly and nice, and helpful). -good value.. not expensive and filling -food gets prepared fast -offers lamb dishes (lamb is hard to find at chinese places) Cons: -some dishes were too salty to my liking. overall, i don't feel healthy eating this food. it's VERY VERY oily. -not much ambiance. it's a fast food place that you order at the counter and pick up the food once they are finished cooking. there are tables for sit down. -no parking besides street parking at this Woburn place. Other comments: -food taste is different.. so you need to get used to this style to like it. i don't think everyone will like it first time around.. but it is good to me. -i tried #4, what everyone raved about, the hand pulled noodles.. and it was tasty and good.. although I find it very tough to chew. I would have liked it much softer. After half way in, my jaws were just so tired from chewing and I want to stop eating, even though my stomach doesn't feel satisfied yet. This dish in my opinion was a tad on the salty side as well. very flavorful, but maybe a little too much.. and very oily. -pork bun (#1) was very salty and not much to romanticize about. oil dripped down on the bun. I wouldn't really recommend this dish. -#9, the lamb with pulled noodles was tasty and perhaps a bit better than the #4 just because it wasn't as salty, and had bean sprouts, and other veggies in there. the #4 was just noodles and no meat. I liked this dish but hesitate going back to order it because i feel so unhealthy after eating this dish. at the beginning, you can't see the oil, but half way in, you can see half the bowl is filled with oil. i feel pretty disgusted, actually.. -we took what we couldn't finish to go, and ate it 2 days after. surprisingly, the hand pulled noodles tasted much better being left overs. the noodles were softer and the taste was still delicious. -in conclusion, i think it's very tasty, and i would come back to try other dishes and their soups, and i would go for it if i ever had a craving for this kind of flavor because i think it is one of a kind. However, i like to eat healthy/clean food, and this restaurant is NOT for the health conscious eaters. I do wish the restaurant a lot of luck though, because the owner was very nice, and it does deserve to stay in business because it serves one of a kind cuisine. read more

We love Gene's! I wish we lived closer. It's to hard find food like this in the Boston area. My Personal favorite is the cumin lamb with the hot and sour soup being a close second. The prices are low and food never takes more than 10 minutes. The menu is quite small but does have a couple more options them the Boston location menu. The Woburn location is generally much less busy than the Boston location, and I think a little less busy than the Westford location as well. read more

I tried the beef and noodle soup, the dumpling sound, and the pork flat bread sanwich. The food soup is AMAZINGLY fresh tasting, but if you have high blood pressure you may not want to eat the restaurant as you will need to dilute it with water. The sandwich also tasted fresh, but must be eaten right away as it hardens quickly. I gave it 3 stars because for the 3 items it came up to over $30. You also have to buy drinks out of the fridge like a takeout joint. Another con is the ambiance of the restaurant, it's not the most comfortable environment to dine at even though it's presented as one on here. The customer service was not great either. I'd definitely only go back for takeout, that way I can add a bit of water to the soup and eat in the comfort of my own home. All in all it is the best tasting soup I've had in a long time, as the noodles are super fresh! read more

I was working in Woburn for a few days and my co-workers were telling me of all the great places to eat, and they couldn't stop raving about this place. So naturally, I went. I got the house noodle soup and my heavens it was amazing. The soup was just the right amount of spicy and packed with flavor. To top it off these noodles were freshly made, and they tasted amazing (and much lighter than packaged noodles). You can't beat these prices either, the noodle soup was $6.50 and the rest of the menu items have a great price as well. I can't wait to be back and try more of their menu items! read more

We visited this place the other day because I remembered to check whether this place was open after they moved from their Chelmsford location. The food at the Chelmsford place had always been good and that remains the case here. The environment of the restaurant has definitely been upgraded compared to the original location. Can't not give this place 5 stars. The amazing hand pulled noodles (incredibly inexpensive) are out-of-this world delicious. Popular with both me and my kids. Not fancy, but the incredibly nice staff make up for any perceived failings. The Center is a mess with places to get food, good food, unless you are seeking much more upscale. This place is amazing. Completely under the radar as the name really doesn't do it a justice. Most people I tell to come here are expecting flatbread pizza. The hand pulled noodles and broths are incredible and the perfect thing to eat after a nice long day especially in the winder. Their pork sandwiches are a nice appetizer as well.
