HOLY SMOKES, their subs here are HUGE! Big enough for you to split it into 2 meals, or you can share with someone! Service is great, the staff is very friendly here! I tried Gene's Grinders in Monrovia for the first time on 07/24/2024 for pick-up at Lunchtime. I ordered one of the Pastrami Dip's (Small) and one of the Meatball Special's (Small). I actually at the Pastrami Dip. It was absolutely delicious. Full of flavor, full of meat and toppings. The price is competitive with other sandwich shops and probably actually better, because they actually put a lot into each sandwich. The bread is super fresh as well. Been visiting Gene's for years now - definitely our fave local sandwich spot! They have a solid menu and daily specials - and their fried chicken sandwich is one of the best around - even better than all the fast food ones we've tried (it's their Tuesday/Wednesday special). I think their fried chicken sandwich is prob my fave - very soft chicken with just the right amount of deliciously seasoned breading, lettuce, tomato, cheese and mayo - it's delightful! My hubby's latest go-to is their tuna salad sandwich which is always very good and comes with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Their meatball sandwich is wonderful! I try to remember to ask for extra sauce - only bc I like a higher sauce-to-meatball ratio. It comes with cheese as well. The meatballs are made from very decent beef and are absolutely massive! I have to cut them in half bc they're so generously proportioned lol! Excellent choice! All their portions are huge - we always get smalls and Jane leftovers most of the time. I tried their fries for the first time today and yummm!! They're flawless and the portion is HUGE considering it's only $2.75!! I was very impressed - Highly recommend! It's in a small shopping center at the end of Old Town Monrovia with plenty of parking (street and in the lot) with a lovely outside seating area in the shade - very comfortable and relaxed. Wow! I've finally tried this place after knowing about it for more than a decade. I tried the large pastrami and it was delicious. Loaded with meat , and not too salty. Gene's Grinders has been around for a very, very long time. I remember my dad taking me here when I was in junior high and even then, Gene's Grinders was here for a long time before that. Gene's Grinders is located on the corner, across the street from A Snail's Pace. You can either park on the street or in their parking lot. There is covered outdoor seating available that is dog friendly. Haven't had Gene's Grinders in a while, I decided to make an order of the following online: Small Turkey, $11 prior to tax- Don't let the size "small" fool you. The small size is pretty big and made for 2 separate meals for me (my small size automatically came cut in half, which I appreciated). I customized my sandwich to omit vinegar, onions and red chili flakes. I had written in the comment section to go light on both the mayonnaise and mustard. I was very please to see that my sandwich was not heavy handed on the condiments and everything was just perfect with the turkey, cheese, pickles, lettuce and tomatoes. Capacola, $17.75 prior to tax as a meal- The meal comes with a drink and chips. If you want to order this by itself, it's $13.25 prior to tax. I picked barbecue chips and lemonade, which the employee had told me they make in house every day. I ordered the large size for my husband, which also came cut in half. Each side was big enough for 2 meals (my husband had half and my mother had the other half). My husband had his made with no vinegar and no mustard but I had forgotten to request for there to be a light spread of mayonnaise. So the sandwich was quite heavy handed on the mayonnaise. But overall, both my mother and my husband both liked their sandwich halves. My husband liked the lemonade and had said that he could tell it was made in house since it didn't have that artificial taste. ----------------------------------- (Total= $31.70 after tax) Although a bit pricey (but inflation is a real thing), it provided 6 meals which is not bad. The service was great. My sandwich was made pretty quickly and the gentleman who took my order was personable and thorough. This is more of a "Take Out", type place, then a, "sit down inside", type spot. Now for the so-so part. That was my sandwich. For a place dubbed, "The Best Sandwiches In Town", my socks weren't knocked off. The sandwich was dry. I' couldn't even tell you if they use mayo and mustard on it or not. I'm going to say that they don't, but I couldn't testify that they do, because it was super dry. NOTE TO MANAGEMENT: Some of us like mayo and mustard. Is this even an option? Because I wasn't asked. The economy has made our ever-favorite Pastrami Grinder fairly pricey so we rarely go anymore as money is tight for everyone these days. THIS REVIEW IS ABOUT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN YELP AND GENE'S WEBSITE. It is cloned/highjacked and re-routed through Grubhub. Thought I'd place an order for pickup. Imagine my shock that a large sandwich was now $21.25 each! Was going to forgo Genes in favor of Tops strictly due to price, but wanted to support a local small business, especially since it seemed a while back they were not doing well. NOW, Imagine my shock as I arrive to the restaurant to find out a large is actually $16 and some change. GrubHub charges restaurants 30% so they charge more for orders placed through the app. Here's the deal, I had no idea I was on the app because I connected to their "website" via yelp. (See pix) As I left Genes, I felt the guy at the window blamed me for not getting it right. Not sure who the shady ones are: Genes, GrubHub, Yelp, or all 3, but, I'm full-on upset with all 3. We already know Yelp is a scam in that it essentially blackmails business owners into paying for sponsored ads in return for Yelp not burying or hiding favorable reviews or, on the flipside, hiding unflattering reviews.
