I went there today at 2 PM. I was having my truck worked on a couple blocks away. They told me the food was good at George's. I walked several blocks and went inside after noticing the sign "Breakfast Anytime". Upon entering the establishment, several voices chimed out "WE ARE CLOSED!". Old style family restaurant with all the usuals. Our food was solid but it was just eggs and hash browns. They did have some interesting choices from Huevos Rancheros to Chicken Fried Steak. They make a Mickey Mouse pancake for the kids and my grandson had some fun Corn Dog nuggets that were tasty. The carpet on the way to the restrooms smelled musky though. I will forever give this place 5 stars. Always has the best breakfast. I've been coming to this place since 2015 and while I only order a few things, it's been consistently good. The service is always good, even on their busiest days you aren't ever forgotten, the foods always correct and hot, and the wait staff are pleasant. We don't get to Springfield often. Every time we go we like to try a new restaurant. Been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, just never got there early enough. There are a lot of restaurants in Springfield to choose from. Sorry that we chose this one. I just want good service and good food at decent prices. Got none of these at George's. I like to go to a place where I will spend most of the time eating. At George's we spent most of our time waiting and waiting and waiting. Specifics below. Parking spaces are too narrow. The interior of this place is very dated and dark. There's all kinds of lottery or gambling signs and monitors around the room. It was 11:00 and there were plenty of empty booths to pick from. Guess we chose the wrong booth in the wrong section because we sat there and waited a long time to get waited on. As if we were invisible. A couple gentlemen came in after us and sat in the front section and they had service before us. We were down to our last two minutes when we said if we didn't get service we would leave. Finally a waitress came by, but she took our drink order wrong. We asked for ice water. She brought us iced tea and menus. The place has an extensive menu. After that we waited and waited and finally a man came and got our order. Paul ordered the buffet so he got to eat right away. He said it was awful. Has no idea what was in the meatballs. He said the only thing tasty was the mashed potatoes. He looked at the desserts and passed. Wife ordered a breakfast skillet that she waited and waited and waited for. Paul was already done eating by the time the wife's breakfast skillet came out. It was served with a really bad-tasting salsa. The American fries in the skillet were potato slices. There was supposed to be bacon in the skillet, but you couldn't see it or really taste it. Maybe it was chopped up and mixed in with the potatoes, cheese, etc. The whole thing seemed greasy, and wife only ate a third of it. She did like the taste of the B&G, but was disappointed that despite its description on the menu, it lacked sausage. On our way home from Springfield, we stopped at Cooky's in Golden City. As usual at Cooky's, we were waited on immediately. We each ordered a brisket sandwich. We told our waitress that we wish we could eat a full meal, but we were too full from the bad meal we had had earlier in the day. We also told the waitress that compared to that place, it was a pleasure to eat good food and get great service. And the ambiance at Cooky's is like no other, and not uncomfortable like the other place. That, among other reasons, is why we return to Cooky's. But we will not return to George's. read more

Do not eat here! I was charged $52.01 for a $43.34 check. Food was cold. Server was terrible. She never checked on our COLD food, undercooked hashbrowns, never brought a chocolate milk- and charged me for it. Called management to get situation remedied, was told it was my bank. Verified it was not on the bank and was charged a 22.5% tip via the customer terminal in which the cashier selected without knowledge. They are crooks and have no shame. Food is cold and undercooked. Find a better place. Do better George's. Do better. Or gracefully bow out and close your doors. read more

We walked in and were told to sit anywhere. People were friendly and it seemed there were a number of regulars in for breakfast. It was a bit darker than a lot of restaurants, but not uncomfortably so. The workers have loud conversations that you expect in a diner. We had the steak and eggs, which also came with potatoes, and biscuit and gravy. Another had the avocado on sourdough bread. It came with a good side of mixed fresh fruit. Both were good. No complaints about the steak and eggs. The biscuits and gravy is what you want with a good country breakfast! The prices were higher than I would expect for breakfast. For the two of us the bill was $34 before tip. But to be fair, maybe that is just our current crazy economy. The only thing I would not recommend is the cappuccino. Our daughter has lived in Springfield a little over a year, and she says her goal is to try a new restaurant every time we visit. Today it was George's. NOT a disappointment! My wife and I split a Country Fried Steak, two eggs, Georgie-style hash browns, and a biscuit with gravy. Plenty of food for two people. Our daughter had chocolate chip pancakes and a side of bacon. I'm 65 and haven't been here since my 4th grade birthday party and it was known as George Lyndsey's, ya know "Goober" on the Andy Griffith show?! They had a nice crowd and everything was awesome today. My husband and I both had the recession proof breakfast combo. You have some choices here and we had biscuits & gravy (perfect!), he had over med. eggs (cooked perfect as well) sausage patty for me hash browns & 1 coffee. Drive by this place every day since i recently moved here and wanted to check it out. Upon entering there is no sign to wait to be seated or to seat yourself so I just stood there for a while until a customer at a nearby table told me to sit anywhere which I did. Not long afterwards I was greeted and handed a menu. I chose a super sampler with scrambled eggs, Georgie hash browns and sourdough toast. I was shocked how quickly it arrived, I'd barely received my coffee when the meal was delivered. Upon first glance I was impressed. Bacon was crispy and yummy, sausage patty was tasty but that was all that was good. Scrambled eggs were not light or fluffy, kinda burnt on one side and chewy, toast was barely buttered, it was difficult to tell which side was actually buttered. The pork had issues, nice char lines on it but it was barely warm so I decided to just eat the edges but left most of it. The George hash brown which is loaded and cost $1.99 extra was revolting, it was swimming in oil, I tried to drain it off but there was so much. Server should have noticed the almost untouched pork and hash browns and inquired if everything was ok, especially when I denied a to go box. She did notice the big pool of oil when she took my plates away, she even showed it to another worker but still delivered the check without saying anything. Ye ol Hor Hey's... Well that's what we called it growing up here. Some things have definitely changed, and some haven't. No more fighting the Goth kids for late night tables as they smoke, and drink their bottomless coffee. Those day are over, but what hasn't changed is the dependability of good old George's. It's not the best, and it's not the cheapest "anymore." But you can bet that everyone in your group will find something; possibly even a hair in their food. I come here so often so I'm not sure why I haven't left a review yet. My friends and I have basically made this restaurant our go-to spot for early morning study sessions since they open super early. The waitresses that are there when they open basically know what we always get and our drink order because we come here that often haha! The service is incredible especially for a small ma and pa breakfast spot like this. I love coming here for their endless coffee, their recession breakfast which is $4 for everything you would want for breakfast, and the ambience. The tables are always nice and clean, bathrooms are clean, service is always good, and food is never disappointing. There's nothing negative I can contribute to this review. Finally got the chance to try this place out on Sunday and it was a bust. We got seated, 5 minutes after arriving, at a booth with terrible lighting and a view of what was going on behind the bar. We uploaded the menu on our phone, per scan QR code on the table, and looked at the menu while we waited for our server. Our server was pleasant and got us our water as we continued looking. While we waited for our food there were bad signs left and right. First off our table light fixture was out (hello darkness), a customers order had been returned because it was not cooked correctly, they microwave their biscuits and then we saw one of the cooks walk out. We waited over 40 minutes for our food and never got an ETA. I get they were busy, short staffed but where's the service? We got a hold of our server and we asked what was going on and she says the kitchen is at a stand still. I asked if our order had even been started and she said no. We cancelled our order and left. Me and my husband agreed completely that it's crazy we had never tried George's until now. We both got the daily special, hamburger steak (HUGE portion perfectly cooked to order), a side and salad bar. Affordable and delicious food. Great friendly service and a more clean and up to date dining room than we expected judging by George's older exterior. It's very, very old-fashioned and "down home" here - but nice nonetheless. George's gets 3 stars if you are looking for fine dining. Because that is not what it is. And it may have "steak house" in the title, but really it's just a neighborhood Mom and Pop type of place. George's gets FIVE STARS if you like local restaurants with ordinary people who wear jeans and t-shirts. Think "local flavor" in a literary sort of sense. Ernest Hemingway would have eaten at George's (and Caspers) if he had ever passed through Springfield -- because of the people. The servings are big! The employees keep your coffee filled. You want to study the menu because some of the best items are also the cheaper ones. If you pay $8 or $9 for something, just plan on asking for a to-go container. You probably won't be able to finish all of it. That's how big the servings of food are. And at George's, nobody looks at you like you are a cheap-skate when you request a to-go box. read more
