Came in for the first time this past Saturday night after having this place on my "to try" list for a while. It's owned by the same people who created Blue Box and Frances Bogside and there's definitely an air of familiarity between the three. This is definitely a trendy place nestled in the heart of the Elian area. The place was crazy packed but somehow my friend and I managed to snag two seats at the bar in the back (there's two bar areas when you walk inside). The cocktail menu is packed full of specialty over the top craft cocktails. Being a bourbon girl I ordered the Mixed Berry Smash for my first round. There were four bartenders behind the bar but between the sheer amount of people there and the time it takes to concoct each artisan drink I agree with other reviewers the wait time for a drink can be REALLY LONG. Not because the bartenders were slacking at their job but just the sheer amount of drink orders in and the time it takes to make the craft cocktails seemed to lead to a stacked up drink order. With that being said the cocktail was delicious once it arrived-so much so I stuck with the Mixed Berry Smash and had two more before the night was over. Same story though-long wait time for each round of cocktails. If the inside gets too claustrophobic and loud for you they have an outdoor patio overlooking the Elian complex that's more chill and relaxed with couches and several tables to hang out at. Horrible experience on my night out. I had a friend from out out of town and the night started to get great but what happened after an hour or two, that's when things started getting out of hand. I don't know when this place started to get a bouncer but when I went here before COVID, there was no bouncer and you literally just walk in with no issues. Maybe they had some troubles in the past with other customers but the way how the matter was handled was unprofessional and uncalled for. My friend was going to use the restroom and out of nowhere he was dragged out by the bouncer because he supposedly destroyed property aka used his leg to open the bathroom door. This was outrageous! I tried having a civilized conversation with the so called manager but I was told that I had to leave the premises as well. We didn't do anything wrong and I felt we were discriminated against. Never again will I come to this establishment again. What once was a place I recommend to come has now become a place I avoid like the plague. read more

First time visiting the La Cantera area. Dipped my nose into this place for a quick drink and it was hopping! Great atmosphere and music. The have a great outdoor seating that overlooks the fountain and would be a great spot to sit out in the sun. The beer was tasty! It's great to see a place serving beer in a nice glass as opposed to those old school pint glasses. Cocktails were delicious too. Extremely cold outside when we visited, but looking forward to coming again when the weather heats up. read more

I took a friend to this establishment because I like the area. It tends to be classy if a bit pricey. I anticipated a nifty experience and quality entertainment on nice big screens. Regrettably, everything about GK yells "dive bar". It was dark, smelled a bit and the staff looked uncomfortable that we walked in. There was only one TV that I could see and it was off. We sat down, looked at the beer selection (which was regrettably nonexistent and junk) and moved on to The Rim across the highway. I came to this quaint bar off a recommendation and I was not disappointed! The atmosphere was intimate and the drinks were . I ordered a northwest side and I cannot recommend this drink enough. I don't know what alcohol was in it, but maybe ask before completely going off my recommendation just to make sure it's up your alley. Regardless of what you choose, you are bound to enjoy it. I came to this Bar with coworkers to just wind down after a rough week of classes. Just like the previous reviews state it is a dark, classy and a trendy place to get a good cocktail. During the week they do have drink specials which are the drinks my coworkers and myself ordered. The drink specials are Northwest Side, Fitzgerald, Tequila Honeysuckle, Gold Rush and Old Fashioned. These drink specials cost $5.50, all day Sunday and Monday and 5-8 pm every other day! Selected Wines are $5.50, Well Spirits are $5, Dos Equis XX $4 and House Shots $3.50. I ordered the Northwest Side and Tequila HoneySuckle, both really good and on point. My coworkers ordered the Old Fashioned stated they truly loved the cocktail. You can not beat the prices and good cocktails they have at George's Keep. I truly recommend giving this place a try. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is they have no food. If you are in La Cantera/UTSA area looking for a good cocktail, nice atmosphere and well-dressed people... this is your spot! This area of the city is full of touristy restaurants and bars with your usual beer and margaritas happy hour. But if instead you are looking for something more classy with really good hand-crafted cocktail, George's Keep is the place for you. I don't think any other bar in town can beat their Sunday-Monday HH menu, which I totally recommend! On Sundays they have an all-day happy hour in which 6 drinks of their menu are half off; which includes the one and only, Old Fashioned. It usually gets pretty busy around 8-9pm on Sundays so I would recommend getting here a little early. I've had two of their HH cocktails, but my fave is the classic Old Fashioned. read more

Went to GK recently, hadn't been in a while. It was packed, my fault for going on a wknd night. Maybe I'm just getting old, but music was hella loud. The drinks were messy af. I know that the bartenders are in CHINGA, but the mixing was totally unhygienic. The bartender who made my drinks was sweating profusely, running his fingers through his hair and making drinks simultaneously. It was really gross. He looked sick. Just sweaty sick fingers touching everything. I jokingly told my partner, " we're so getting Covid tonight". Lo and behold, my partner just tested positive. I dunno, I don't think I'll be returning. This place is the bomb.com. If you ever find yourself wanting to take somebody out and impress them then you should come here. The bourbon options are ridiculously nice and they have quality juice(s) ...i.e bourbon. The happy hour is reasonably priced and they offer exceptional service. The ambiance is nice, private, and just right. I like how they dim the lights at the bar as it sets a mood. You have to see it to understand. Mike is an awesome bartender and is incredibly attentive. Miguel is another gentleman behind the bar who is equally attentive. Mike knows exactly what to get for those that don't indulge in the world of cocktails. If you ever visit ask for him or Miguel. I have been here a few times and really like the vibe. They were one of the first craft cocktail bars this side of town and reminded me of a speakeasy or basement feel bar. Went here from the hotel to enjoy a drink after a long day in San Antonio not knowing much to expect. Online showing that there was food however none to be available; as well as the "less expensive" opinion based on maps. However the biggest shock was the bill; over $100 for 4 drinks! Be prepared to spend more than expected they grab top shelf every time so be very specific. The service was fine if you can get their attention however you have to stand over someones shoulder as there is not a good walk up location to the bar which simply made other patrons tense. I'm not really sure how a place like George's Keep stays in business. I am all for supporting local business, but this establishment doesn't deserve to stay open. I was there for HH, and the drinks were good. When I went to go to the bathroom, I used my foot to keep the door ajar because of Covid-19. From out of the blue, a man runs up to me, puts me in a headlock, and starts dragging me out from across the bar. When I asked who the hell are you since he never identified himself? He said he was the bouncer, and then proceeded to throw me like a rag doll. The last time I checked that's assault and battery in any U.S. state. I have never been disrespected like this in my life ever at a bar. It pretty much ruined my night, and I don't recommend that you patronize this business for anything. read more

Georges Keep is a cool spot to chill. It is more of a mature crowd. I would say, 35 and up. You won't find a lot of drama here. It is a small bar and it gets crowded. So. Five stars for the drinks, but drinks can be had anywhere. Good drinks, strong drinks, creative drinks, these are all available at taverns and pubs and bars and dive bars. And at George's. The drinks were truly great. But my small group came to George's Keep because we had heard it's a *speakeasy.* Not merely a bar. There are tons of bars in SATX, and perhaps based on misinformation, this location was supposed to be different. Speakeasies, in my mind, are supposed to be a bit anachronistic, throwbacks to the 1920s when liquor was outlawed; people could not just go out and have a drink at a place. They went to secret locations that were glammed up like clubs. And I have been to some fantastic speakeasies around the US, most recently the Patterson House in Nashville, back before the pandemic. It is a great example of what I expected: low-key and pretty quiet (speakeasies used to be hidden in homes, basements, barns), with dim lighting, cool glassware, comfy booths, maybe a few snacks to nibble while the booze flows, and scene-setting music. But QUIETLY, a place to "speak easy," not blast out music advertising a watering hole for folks to get together and drink illegal hooch. While George's barkeep made us some great drinks on a Sunday afternoon on Easter weekend (snaps for even being open that day), the atmosphere was what we came for ... but it is also why we left after only a couple of drinks. Other than taking our order, the barkeep said nothing to us, not to welcome us, not to ask if we had an order. We were literally the only three customers in the bar. The music was excruciatingly loud and all over the place, obnoxiously loud. Even the music lover in our group said it was way too loud and not that good. Music is of course subjective, and there would no doubt be a dozen people who would say the music rocked. But it was TOO LOUD, like "loud enough to drown out the place at full tilt crowded," and it was a raucous selection, rock and rap almost entirely. Since I was expecting a speakeasy, with speakeasy music we could talk at length over ... background music, not a rock concert or DJ jam, it was impossible at that volume. Check Spotify for "speakeasy" and you will find a theme: it's mostly jazz and low-fi ambient. We considered going out to the outdoor seating, which we assumed was maybe open? Not that it was obvious to any of us that we could do that or that anyone would have tried to wait on us if we'd gone out there. (The bar is down a long hall and some short stairs from the door to the outside, so not really a great set-up for hoping-to-drink-a-bit patrons who might be less sure-footed once in their cups.) So if in fact George's is supposed to be speakeasy (and there was no signage outside, just like a speakeasy), then it's failing. Which is a shame because inside it looked the part. But it was acting very much like a bar. If it's trying to be a bar, then some more attention to typical bar details would be good, like snacks and some extroverted staff and some signage inside and out. Then they can play the rock and rap music however loud they want, like a bar often does. read more

I'm aware of covid and the restrictions during this time so I'm giving it a solid 3 stars. There were pros and cons about this place. My husband and two other couples came one Friday night and due to covid there was of course a line. We waited our turn which was fine but when we got to the guy to take our temp he asked how many . We told him 8 , he advised us 6 was the max in a party so we said that fine ( two ppl ended up not showing so that worked out.) we get seated and the drinks were great and they had a great ambiance. After we were settled in our corner... we noticed a larger group slowly adding to a table. Buy the end of the night that party had about maybe 12 ppl and they were loud and drunk so that was a downside but the other thing that wasn't the best was that they had outside speakers and they didn't have music, which would have been nice, it was out side and just a pointer to make sure the speakers worked . Our waiter was nice , he was knowledgeable about the styles of drinks and different liquors. The place seemed sanitary until.. a small group over by the back door some how ordered a bottle of champagne.. one guy looked young or just turned 21 and that poor guy/boy ended up throwing up all over his table... some employees cleaned it, the escorted him out, and one person in my party mentioned that "hey I don't think their waiter (different waiter from ours) sprayed that table with disinfectant.. all they did was wipe the table down. ( as other tables left they sprayed those down before sitting someone new. ) they didn't with that particular table. The gave that champagne bottle of course to that group of 12 , didn't clean that bottle, didn't clean the ice case either. Then they sat two ppl waiting in line there. So all in all, the drinks were good. They are expensive but it's an okay place. Wouldn't be my top 5 palaces. Your better off doing some downtown or somewhere else. read more

Yeah. Drinks have definitely changed. Besides the ever changing seasonal drink menu. I mean the quality. Appears rushed and not made as well as they used to be. The first bartender's round was really poorly made- definitely a bartender.. Subsequent drinks by a different mixologist improved but still failed to rise to a perfectly made drink. I will tell you if you are going to this place you will be going to a real bar with a mixologist. I was in the area of the Shops of La Cantera as I am attempting to try a new place every Wednesday to explore the area of San Antonio. It seems like places like that modeled after a speakeasy and serving old fashioned mix drinks are becoming the rage. So put on your flapper dresses and partake in the bar scene of George's Keep. If you just want the regular rum-n-coke or Long Island Ice teas then you can find that here. If you are the type where you are just use to places like TGIFridays or Chili's then this will be vastly different for you. Not that there is anything wrong with those places. For one thing it is a bar and they do not serve food. I would highly suggest that you hit up there happy hour to try a selection of their drinks. Plenty of other people had that idea as it looked like the after work crowd was coming in to partake on some work wind down. Trust me you will not make it through many as they are strong but it is the kind that sneaks up on you. I made up my mind after the first drink that I would only have one. Not that it was bad but it was so good that I knew it was one of those sneaky drinks that would hit me. Especially since I did not eat anything recently. My first drink was a Brown Derby. The main ingredient in it is bourbon but you could hardly taste it as it was mixed with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and I believe their honey syrup was made in house. Yes it takes a bit longer to make drinks but seeing how it is mixed and made from scratch is kind of a show for you. The next drink I had was a Tequila Honeysuckle. Don't let the name fool you. It is basically a margarita. Still it was good. Georges Keep is a nice relaxing spot and if you enjoy music from the late 90s to I say the mid 2000s then it is a good place to sip and chill. The place is actually located on the second floor of this portion of the Shops of La Cantera so keep that in mind when your GPS points you to a wall. read more

Hilariously bad service. Like, if every bartender wasn't experiencing their first night then they may want to consider whether or not they're cut out for bartending. Stood at the bar and watched this guy make one cocktail a minute, not look up at all between movements or drinks and went to the cooler 4 times to get a single ingredient each time for ONE drink and that happened several times while I waited. And the only reason I went back to the bar was because I realized they'd rand me up wrong and overcharged me. Guess the house won in this case because I got tired of waiting. In my way out I asked someone at the north bar who the manager on duty was so I could let them know what my experience had been. He muttered a name and said he wasn't in yet and went back to slicing fruit. ‍ cool cool cool thank you so much. We've been here many, many times and always had a great experience. We met some friends for drinks on Friday night. The place was packed, so we went to the back room where there were booths along with seating at the bar. There were no seats at the bar, so we sat in a booth and waited for someone to take our drink order. What we didn't know is that there's no table service and we had order drinks at the bar. It was a little tough to get a bartender' s attention, but then again, the bar was really busy, so that's understandable. I ordered an old-fashioned which was tasty, but really strong (which is not a bad thing). Overall, the lack of table service was the only downfall of the evening.
