On our first day in New York, after getting off a red eye flight from LA and before we could check in to our hotel, we stumbled upon George's for breakfast. It was good but not unforgettably great. Like everything else in New York, it was pricey. My favorite was probably the bagel. It was a little stuffy inside, and the service was a little slow. This place is the same as Denny's. There are so many better places to go for a great meal in New York! The service was also lacking as well, we had to ask several times for water refills, jelly and just little things so we could eat our food. mmmmm!! Their baked goods here are pretty damn good I must say. I am a huge fan of their oatmeal raisin cookies. They are soft and baked to perfection. I order from them all the time and pass by them on my way home daily and it's a regular spot for me. The photos I have posted are from various visits. I have to say they make some of the best chocolate cupcakes I have ever had, hands down. They are moist, fresh and the frosting is perfectly creamy. I go into a sugar coma each time and I love it! I am also a huge fan of their strawberry shortcake. It is absolutely fantastic. George's has been my refuge when I am having "women's issues", before and after. My sweet tooth becomes almost unbearable during this time, but George's always has the answer for me. Whether it's having some seasoned fries or a simple chicken wrap, they deliver fast and are reasonably priced. I have even indulged in their blueberry pancakes. In summation, George's is a fantastic diner and one of my favorite places to eat. I had to take off a star for the time I went and ordered a toasted onion bagel with scallion cream cheese and to my dismay, when I brought it home, I opened up a cinnamon raisin bagel, not toasted with cream cheese and tons of scallions chopped up on top of the cream cheese (not mixed in). GROSS! Obviously, this is inedible and the guy who gave this to me was on crack as he either could not tell the difference between onion bagels and cinnamon raisin bagels or he thought I wouldn't notice? But nevertheless, they are normally a pretty yummy diner and rare find in the FiDi area. read more

This is a completely average, dinerish place in the Financial district. They've been open since 1950, and their backstory in that they rebuilt after being demolished following the World Trade Center attacks is admirable. The space is cramped, and the waiters were definitely diner quality. My friend and I both order a Dr. Brown's soda--one black cherry, one diet black cherry, and the waiter had to come back twice to make sure he got the order right. The food is diner quality as well. The cream of mushroom soup wasn't horrible but was far from good. The chicken breast wrap I got was edible but not anything special. The chicken was fine, but the chunks of iceberg lettuce, inferior quality vegetables and chunks of feta cheese (not fresh) didn't help. Contrary to what George's website says, the portion was actually pretty small too. It was enough for lunch, but not worth the $10 it cost. If you're stuck eating here don't worry this place won't kill you, but it is nothing special like others are saying. I'm just not sure how they can stay open down here (hours? longevity?). I prefer Suspenders nearby based on the food, atmosphere, service...everything. read more

We decided to stop here for breakfast since it was around the corner from the hotel and we could again eat outside.......this place is nothing special and the food looks better than it actual taste. I had an egg white omelette with mushrooms, onions, tomato, and unlimited sangria's which tasted watery with kiwi and strawberry. I walk by George's all the time. Usually it is a convenient late night stop to pick up some cookies with my girlfriend. The cookies are pretty good here. Last night though, I decided to try them out for a Seamless Web delivery. Being a diner, it is strictly American fare, so I kept it simple and ordered a pastrami on rye with just mustard. Curiously enough, the online order form had a checkbox for lettuce on this sandwich -- really? The delivery was prompt, but the sandwich was only so-so. The quality suffered in part from the sandwich being wrapped in paper and enclosed in a tray with a plastic cover. The steam, with nowhere to escape, found a home in the rye bread making it especially soggy. Air vents can do wonders on delivery orders. The sandwich itself though was loaded with gorgeous looking pastrami. It looked like something from Katz's, but it did not taste that way. The pastrami was generally boring and not particularly buttery. A functional sandwich all around, but nothing special in this town known for delivering great pastrami on rye. The accompanying pickle was pretty good though, and the fries were decent. Overall, the place is fine but not extraordinary in any way. read more

Typical NYC diner, small and cramped but decent food and good service. Luckily, I was alone but there is no way I'd come here if I were with more than 2 people. The wait would be years because the place is so small. The eggs with cheese was great but the pancakes were average. The servers were attentive and welcoming. I ate here two days in a row, so that says a lot because of I don't like a place I don't go back. All and all it was really good food and a 5 minute walk from the WTC memorial and right across the street from a subway stop. read more

We stopped here for breakfast prior to heading to Statue of Liberty and 9/11 Museum. One block from Rector subway station. We waited 15 minutes for a table of five; the hostess was really personable and very sweet. We ordered waffles and eggs with bacon and sausage and everything was really good. Kids had small chocolate milkshakes that tasted great. Service was efficient and food came out very quickly; it was all hot and very tasty! read more

I've been going there before 911, very convenient for me. He rebuilt it after 911, prices have gone up, but The Breakfast, and service is great! .. Breakfast is great, feels like a homemade meal, Lunch...... thank God I'm very near, Did not have to travel uptown for a Corn Beef on Rye.... I've walked by George's for year's and finally tried it. I think I should have kept walking. I had the misfortune of sitting next to an incredibly rowdy family, but hey that's not the restaurant's fault. It's a greasy spoon and goes with the territory. When I ordered a burger platter, the waitress had to go check that they still had french fries in stock! Uch, that should have been a sign... The burger was overdone, barely visible in the huge floppy bun. There were fries but clearly not fresh. Considering the paucity of good eats in the area, I'd be willing to try George's again but probably not for a really long time... read more

Went here for breakfast on 6/4/15. We were seated right away and ordered our food. The waiter was kinda rude when he took our order. We are here visiting from California so maybe it's the New York way, he didn't want to be there at work. In California we like pretentious people. Anyways our order did not arrive 45 minutes later. Granted there were 6 of us but we ordered breakfast not some fancy steak dinner. After we ate the bill came and it totalled $108. Did I mentioned this was breakfast? Holy mollie. Nothing else to say, hands down one of the best burgers in the downtown area. I order my usual, classic cheeseburger medium, fries, jack, pickles and a ice cold brewski. First comment out of the box - the SERVICE here was fantastic. First rate. I'd come back just for that. And the other reason is the menu - which gives a ton of options - and the four items that landed on our table were all well done - including an Eggs Guacamole - (SOTB) version of an Eggs Benedict. All around solid spot for Breakfast/brunch and - I suspect - lunch as well, judging from the menu. The OTHER reason for coming back was the price - really good value for money. This place is pretty damn good. It was clean and super packed. 2 things I always look for. I was seated upstairs and taken care of right away. I settled for a waffle with bacon. About 10 minutes later, my waffle was about to be devoured (it was devoured 4 minutes later.) My server Shannon(?) was what a waitress should be. She was on top on every table (not literally) in a dining area of at least 20 tables. She was really on point. Taking care of tables of mostly tourists and "Wall Street types" is hard to do, so I give her credit to be able to handle it the way she did. Cool lunch spot. read more

I just left, the only reason it's getting two stars is because of the sweet busser who grabbed our drinks and how short and nice the hostess was. The service was HORRIBLE! I'm a server and I get it, we are humans and have off day personally but in NO circumstances is it allowed to take it out on your tables, it's completely not acceptable. Also, we noticed that the milk for coffee if a table didn't use it would go back in the refrigerator once it hits a table it should be thrown out not used again for something else that's disgusting and unsanitary! Very disappointing first impression. The server needs an attitude adjustment, literally I'm pregnant and noticed that my egg Benedict was RAW!! I let him know that I would like it remade and the egg more well done and it was STILL RAW!!! So I changed it and before I could say what I wanted he walked away didn't get a chance to say I want my pancakes with strawberries and bananas and that I wanted to add ham and a scramble egg. Honestly, I will not tell people to go here when visiting. The fact that you as the owner just said that my request was accommodated when they weren't is ridiculous and the anger is coming from a place of your response. Why would I contact management when I would much rather leave and not come back because if this is how the owner replies, I guess I can see why the server attitude was that way which by the way he was unkind and rude to multiple tables! I've been in the industry since I was 18 almost 10 years and the way the response isn't the way to go. Pretty disappointing for a NY diner, service below par ingredients not fresh and prices not good...buuut in this part of Manhattan, you can't expect much better for a sit-down meal near tourist attractions. Rather than vividly recount my experience, I'll cut short to some advice: don't get "George's invention," none of the meats are fresh and salad old, sit upstairs for a quieter more pleasant experience and don't go for the hot dogs (no-name brand). Soup and chili is good, but most items not flavorful. Stick with safe items like hash browns, burgers, pancakes and club sandwiches. Anything more "advanced" than these categories will disappoint you. Finally, if you have mobility or time, go elsewhere. But if you're willing to compromise, George's isn't a total dud. Just not spectacular, or even average for NYC diner standards. read more

Cause when I ordered George's Creation Saturday afternoon after a long night out, it truly hit the spot. It was SO good. It's an opened faced turkey sandwich with fresh cooked spinach, cheddar, sliced warmed tomatoes and hollandaise. It was huge, I only ate half. So I stand corrected, now I like their sandwiches, maybe I'll just steer clear of anything in the egg variety? Service was great like last time. Pros.... the food was cooked. Cons....not very well. Ordered an omelet with spinach, tomatoes and onions with Swiss cheese , tomato and onion chunks were huge , the cheese in the omelet was slushy and unappetizing looked like thick snot . Bare with me ..... I've never said what I'm about to say..... the bacon was ... like a sentence for a crime, tough leathery back in the day probably would have given a great spanking. The people in the store were okay, quick to greet customers and take orders. Steady reliable old school diner. My Dad used to get his lunch here in the 90s when he was working and now I work in FiDi and come here for breakfast. Solid outdoor seating on Greenwich. Plenty of indoor tables and a separate take out counter. Gets busy at lunch but the staff is efficient and professional. They do refill your coffee reliably. They do being the check quickly when it is requested but they don't breathe down your neck if you are lingering over coffee chatting with your friends during a not too busy hour. This is plain and simple a real nice classic New York diner. Nothing fancy, nothing crazy. Dependable and pleasant for breakfast, lunch or dinner. read more
