Not a returning customer. Went yesterday with kids there for a lunch, pasta had awful marinara sauce so kids ended up eating fries, my greek pita looked as stolen from someone's plate with leftover food .. there were even some tomato seeds in it that did not belong to my order ... the meat had a stale taste so I ended up eating salad and fries... definitely not worth $50 ..or any $. Avoid unless you'd like to contract food poisoning. read more

Very popular diner. Now I know why. I couldn't help but get the corned beef hash with over easy. It was perfect. My rye toast was delivered hot! The butter was hard as a rock (not unusual) but it softened quickly. My wife had the Lumberjack. She loved it. A lot of food for the two of us but man was it tasty. Right outside the Rector Street Subway Terminal and within walking distance of the 9/11 Memorial, George's is a great meal. The food is delicious but the wait-staff sure leaves a lot to be desired. It's an old-classic New York breakfast and lunch location. You get that simply by all the celebrity signed photos hanging on the walls as you enter. It's quite obvious they cater a lot to regular costumers but in doing so they seem to unintentionally leave newcomers or tourists behind in terms of service. I saw two waiters chit-chat with regular customers that were already eating for 2-3 minutes as I was clearly standing by the main counter waiting to be seated. And this discrepancy of service from ordering to receiving the check was apparent. I get it. Their regular customers become like family but that doesn't mean you under-value your one-time customers that are coming through. read more

Couldn't find any place to eat on a Sunday morning between Battery Park and Freedom Tower but finally came upon George's. Two floors of packed tables with not much walking space. But it all works. Servers great and the customers all were aware of the boundaries and subdued their histrionics as suited for the layout. Delicious food, too. My family enjoyed a great breakfast at George's! As it was a Saturday morning around 11am, it felt a bit crowded and hectic, especially for the check in process where there was quite a large line forming inside. However, as soon as we were seated, we had a really delicious meal. The menu is extensive and the food is good. read more

The food can be a bit pricey, but it's definitely worth it. One thing I've learned is the portions are big so it's not necessary to order a lot. I do wish that they had more combinations so that you don't feel the need to order so much. The descriptions on their website and apps could be a little better but the food is great. I suggest trying the bread pudding even if you save it for later! read more

The food was adequate, but nothing special. The atmosphere was also adequate, but not memorable. However, the service was TERRIBLE. My group of 5 was there on Wed afternoon, Jul 31, 2019, about 1:30p. Most, but not all, of the tables were in use. We got seated immediately which was a great start. After a few minutes, our server came and took drink orders and dropped off menus, so far so good. After a reasonable amount of time, he came and took the orders. Again, doing fine. From then on, our server was invisible as a ghost. Our cups were empty before the food came, but there was no service for more. Someone from the kitchen dropped off of the food in a rush, of course with no clue (or care) of who had what, and they were gone immediately. Still, our cups were empty, but we ate. Again the food itself was adequate. Nobody ever checked on the table again. While we ate, I saw our server on the other side of the restaurant a few times, so I just assumed he was busy, but would get back to us. Bad assumption. By the time all of us were done eating, we still had nobody ever come by to clear plates, fill cups, or bring the bill. After about another about 20 min of being completely ignored, I flagged down another server from the other side of the restaurant, who said our server had left for the day, apparently without thinking to tell his tables, so the second server would get our bill for us. The second server brought the bill, along with an automatic standard gratuity on it. WHAT??? I understand restaurants need to protect their servers when large groups dine, but when did 5 people become subject to this policy? Nobody mentioned the auto-gratuity policy when we were seated, and it didn't say anything about it on the menu. I asked the second bill-only server about it, and he said that's how it is, nothing he could do. I asked him for his manager, and he said there was nobody and nothing he could do. I asked the seating people if there was a manager, and she shook her head no. So in the end, George's had by far the WORST service of anywhere I visited in New York, but the staff was rewarded with a generous tip, through their automatic gratuity system. I won't ever eat here again, and neither should you! I don't usually post negative reviews, but George's earned it! read more

Great breakfast. The line was long and we were hesitant with the wait on a Sunday morning but it moved quickly. Tight sitting spaces so aware if you have toddlers. Nice atmosphere and the food was real good. We will be returning next time we are visiting. You will not be disappointed!! read more

We went here for brunch and they were not staffed for the rush. It took a while for us to get seated, around 15 min. When we did get seated, service was slow. Food is your average diner fare, with some interesting pastry and dessert choices at the front. Since all we got is standard breakfast fare I can't comment on those. The crowd is a lot of tourists so expect to be around them, although most of the time they are not a real bother. Prices are higher than the quality of food and quality of service would suggest. Some people seemed to enthuse about this place so decided to try it out before the Statue of Liberty cruise. I ordered the "English" breakfast which was described as scrambled eggs with Canadian bacon on English muffin with a choice of melted cheese. What I got was an omelette with what looks like kind of salami with some orange processed cheese on top and hash potatoes on the side. I thought I had received the wrong order so called the waitress over and she swore that the omelette was scrambled eggs and the salami was bacon (Canadian). I was not asked which cheese I wanted but when I tried it, it stuck to my teeth and put me off the rest of the meal. I asked for the bill and although 90% of the food was still on the plate, no one questioned why I hadn't eaten it. I paid and left. I will not be back to this place or indeed recommend it to anyone else. Seems that either the staff haven't heard of customer service and would rather spend time trying to persuade you that an omelette is scrambled eggs, than get the order to your liking. Couldn't argue about the Canadian bacon as perhaps this is a kind of bacon that exists only in US restaurants. Perhaps someone will put me right on this. read more

Came here for breakfast, was seated within 10 minutes (it was busy! It's Sunday morning) and ordered. Food came out within 15 minutes steaming hot. The pancakes were nothing special but still delicious and the home fries were pretty good. Although I found a piece of ham in my home fries. I don't eat pork at so this was a little disappointing to me. The service was wonderful, everyone so nice and quick. Would definitely recommend this place. Prices are very reasonable read more

An overall mediocre experience. Disappointed with the lack of vegan options. That needs to change, especially in a big city and especially when the business of veganism is thriving. I asked if were any vegan options and the waiter just said, "No, look at the menu." Um, excuse me? Don't you think I've already done that? As a waiter, you should have plant-based options ready in your head. I even asked him if he can go check for me and he literally denied it. Double excuse me? I asked politely for you to just go to the chef and/or the manager and ask for vegan options, but you deny the request. Now that's just rude. This restaurant is a block from my cousin's house, so we ate here four times in a week. I thought it was his "go-to" but came to find out he was only eating here because I was visiting. It's a very tight space, so if you can, get a table upstairs. While you're waiting, there is a walk up bar where you can get coffee and a black and white (which were slightly subpar in my opinion). The food was ok. They have specials for a juice with a breakfast, but the juice was basically a shot. The coffee was decent. My cousin went the route of clown face type pancakes for every meal. One french toast dish looked good. I'm a more traditional egg person and they were fairly run of the mill eggs. I ate here a lot, so it's fine, but not somewhere I'd go out of my way to eat at. read more

I had been to a lot of places during my stay in New York but this is my first review of anywhere I have been because it will stick in my head for the WRONG REASONS! I was around the Financial District and checked my Yelp app to see what diner type places were around for some lunch. George's was the closet and 3 out of 5 I thought well it should be grand! As per the other reviews the staff were not overly friendly. To be honest I welcomed this, being from Dublin, Ireland I am not a fan of the American style customer service. It is disingenuous and obviously people are looking for tips. But the girl who served us did not look happy at all. If she is like that all the time I am sure she is not tipped too well! She took out order and we were waiting about 10 minutes and we still had not received our Coke's - not what we had come to expect from the service we had received in other places and there was no sign of her and we were thirsty!! We did notice some dirty cutlery on the floor under the table next to us and the floor did not look terribly clean. In fairness the rest of the place did look clean enough. The place was full with people - it was lunch time on a Friday, so to be expected. There were 2 girls dining at the table beside us and all of a sudden one of the girls screamed like she was being stabbed in the stomach by goblin and jumped out of her chair screaming and ran away from the table. Everyone looked mightily confused as did we. What the hell was this nutter screaming at??? OMG...... A cockroach! Climbing around her table. She said it fell on top of her and perhaps into her food. One of the kitchen staff came out and got rid of it. IE.. Picked it up with a napkin. Needless to say we got up and swiftly ran out of the place. If there are cockroach's in the dining area God knows what is in the bloody kitchen!!!!! This was the first and last cockroach I had seen during my week in the Big Apple...... Urgh.... Never got to taste the food but after that I didn't really want to!!! read more

Came to George's after my race yesterday for a post-run meal. Their brunch didn't start until 11am and we were starving so we opted just for the regular breakfast. It was pretty packed there but luckily we grabbed a seat. Inside is your average diner food and atmosphere. The tables were veryyy close together and I felt like I was on top of other couples sitting next to us. (We sat on the lower level.) After browsing the menu a bit we ordered a simple meal -- eggs over easy with whole wheat toast. Food was okay, nothing special. They gave us a pretty small amount of hash browns compared to the usual diner's portions. And they charged me $1.95 for coffee and my friend $2.95 for tea. All in all, it was meh. Meh. I went here for breakfast with my friend and his family. His mom raved about how great the food was. So I was expecting something fantastic. However, I was rather disappointed. I had an omelette with feta, spinach and tomatoes, with potatoes and toast. My food was lukewarm and not exactly visually appealing. The flavors were lacking and overall it looked like my order was slapped together. But will say the highlight of the meal was the vanilla cupcake my friend got for me from here. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious that was. I'm not sure if that's worth making the trip for though. I won't come here again. read more

Possibly the worst diner in New York. This place is truly disgusting. Even the worst restaurants can usually put together an edible club sandwich, but not George's. The turkey had the consistency of cotton and the bacon was bitter. Yes, bitter. Maybe it was just rancid, or maybe it was contaminated with grill degreaser. It doesn't bear thinking about. My boyfriend pronounced the onion rings the worst he's ever tasted. Fair point, but at least they were better than the sandwich. read more

George's is an excellent greasy spoon in my neighborhood. Family owned since the 50's. Original building had a split in it one day and they had to demo it. But a year later they rebuilt! HUGE menu!! Just like a dinner minus the cheesy diner feel. Staff are super quick and refill instead of asking!
