I made a mistake in draining the AT fluid rather than the oil due to unfamiliarity of this Mini(just bought it). So, I brought my daughter's 07' Mini to GAW due to the positive Yelp reviews. I thought that it would just be a refill of the AT fluid and that would be it(at first). I don't want to go through too much details but needless to say, I would've given maybe a 3.5 but after unbeknownst to Hans, I overheard him on the phone with someone calling me a "numb skull" and "liar". I was looking for a place on a Saturday to tow my car in because it would not start. I called around to many shops that work on Porsche ~ all of them wanted at least $250.00 just to lift the hood until I found Hans at German Autowerke. My long time go-to independent mechanic having semi-retired and left the country, I've been in the unenviable position of identifying a capable and trustworthy alternative. No simple task. I've called or visited numerous German car specialists. This shop was the only one in all of San Diego willing to save my high mileage e60 BMW (2005 525i) when the dreaded transmission fault instrument panel warning light revealed a failed solenoid. No other German shop was interested in even attempting the repair. Yes, it was major work (with accompanying cost, admittedly). But Hanz provided confidence it was not only repairable but worth undertaking. The ZF transmissions on these cars are intricate. Johnny knows them inside & out. These guys only use genuine parts, down to the type of transmission fluid. They provided me a estimate that ended up being the final cost. They told me it would be repaired in three days, and it was. They thoroughly road tested it to ensure there were no other issues before I picked it up. It ran great. I was stunned and additionally impressed when the following day that I picked up the car, a Saturday no less, I received a call from Johnny just to follow up to see how the car was performing. OK, so its me again. A rear brake light quit working on my 1999 SLK, so I visited my nearest parts store and bought the proper bulb. The untrained mechanic (me) that lives at my house installed the bulb but the brake light still didn't work So I went to German Autowerks for a repair and Hans told me the untrained mechanic (me) had replaced the wrong bulb. Needed some diagnostics on our old Audi and figured I will try Autowerke. Born and raised in Germany I prefer an auto mechanic with some German vocational training in car repair and lots of experience. Hans informed me he is from Prague when I greeted him in German. He seems to really know his stuff. Explained how he planned to diagnose the problem and called back fairly quickly. He fixed the problem in no time and to our full satisfaction. Very honest. I have owned numerous Mercedes for over the last 40 years and have worked with many mechanics, some better than others. I was looking for a new independent mechanic when my previous one moved from North County to Temecula. I have a friend who is a perfectionist and is super, super critical. He raved about Hans and how totally honest and helpful he is so I thought I would give him a try. Needless to say I have been thrilled to put it lightly. I currently own a 500 SL. Just this last week I took my Mother's Mercedes 300 Turbo Diesel to Hans with what I thought to be a transmission gone bad. It had all the classic symptoms. It was so bad I had to have it towed in. I was fearing the worst - a $6,000.00 plus repair. Hans was familiar with her car since he had started doing the servicing of it as well as mine. Previously she had been taking it to the Escondido Mercedes Benz dealership (they had done a good job but at a BIG price). Immediately Hans told me what he though the problem was to set my mind at ease (not a dropped transmission). After he had an opportunity to examine the problem thoroughly he called me back in to see exactly what it was - 3 separate but related issues causing the problem due to the car running in and over curbs, etc. over the years. Bottom line, all this issues were resolved and the car is as good as new. The total bill was $880.04. A less than honest mechanic could have sold us a new $6,000.00 transmission and we would have never known the difference. If you are looking for a mechanic that will treat you honestly and fairly, look no further. You have found him. As you can see, I cannot say enough good about this man. read more

I have never liked going to the dealership because, well, I am not rich! It is widely known that dealerships totally overcharge you. But it is tough to find a good independent shop that you can trust. Plus I wanted a shop that specializes in BMW since they can be tough to fix. I was lucky enough to find German Autorwerke. Hans and Joe are about as German as you can get in Oceanside. And that gave me piece of mind from the get go! I don't know about you but I would rather have a German guy named Hans working on my BMW than a guy named Jose. Their work was great and they were very honest about my situation since I have an earlier model 740il. The really new the car model inside and out. Their prices were fair too, alot cheaper than the dealership. I recommend giving them a try if you have a Mercedes or BMW. read more

ICH LIEBE HANS! (Translation: I love Hans) I've been coming to Hans year after year because he's honestly the only mechanic I trust! Not sure if it's because of his German accent and his honesty (all Germans are brutally honest) or his knowledge of Deutschen Autos. Probably all of the above! For anyone that's owned a luxury car especially a German car, there's so many things that can go wrong and since they're built on computers now days you can't just take them to anyone! When my mom got into an accident with her CL55, she took it to Hans and said that although this beast of a car is wonderful to drive in, it has many computer issues and you're going to constantly have problems with it. Truth be told, he was 100% correct, ergo if you buy a high maintenance car expect to go to the mechanic as often as you go to the doctor or even more! Since he has a thorough car knowledge, he's able to tell you the best year and model Mercedes or BMW to get, and he's not effing with you. Since his hands are constantly working with them from all different years, he's able to say you're better off getting a 2006 M Class than a 2009 because a '09 has more computer problems than a '06. Honestly what kind of mechanic actually tells you that?! Most of them want you to keep coming back because that's how they make money, but Hans possesses the integrity that many mechanics lack and finding a great mechanic is like searching for a needle in a haystack! Another time I was having car issues I couldn't go from Park to Drive, and I'm thinking not again! So I called AAA so I could take it to Hans. AAA wanted me to sign a waiver saying if my car gets damaged in the process of having to get it onto the tow truck because they have to drag on there since it won't go from Park to Drive that I can't sue them and they won't pay for the damages. In the middle of the chaos, I called Hans and he said DON'T YOU DARE SIGN IT and I'm on my way! Him and the other mechanic came to my house and said this is what you need to do when this problem happens! There's nothing mechanically wrong with your car just get a screw driver and put it through the hole. There's anti lock system in the car and when it's triggered it's so no one can steal your car. I'm thinking WHAT THE HELL is Mercedes doing, but the simple fact he came over to fix a problem in less than 5 mins, no charge when it could of easily escalated to bigger problem is simply the reason why Hans is my favorite! If you're like me and love German cars, why because we don't want to settle for anything less than German excellence and also live nearby, just take it to Hans! My car is almost kapput and when I get another car, I will definitely be dipping into his expertise and knowledge on what year and model to get. Also for those that complain about him checking out a car before you buy it to see if there's any mechanical issues and expecting it to be free, you're crazy! Of course he's going to charge you! He's performing a service and he's an expert just exactly like you would pay a co-pay when seeing the doctor or paying a lawyer for their legal advice! read more

So I've had my M3 for like 6 months and I was getting bored of it. I wanted a mafia car-a car that's big and comfortable, yet fast, but doesn't look fast so no one will suspect me. A late-model M5 is like my dream car, but I can't afford that :( So I test-drove this badass Merc S55 AMG blacked out and everything. I really liked it-it had good handling, good power, a nice interior-it was perfect. So everything was going well, I'd already negotiated an excellent price on it, and was right about to buy it. I then took it to Hans, a nearby independent mechanic, to get it checked out and compression tested. He checked it out and found some big problems with it-a major oil leak, a leak in the air-suspension, some other leak, and bad brakes. He's like do you still want the car? I'm like hmmm let me think about it... NO. So he ended up just charging me $90 for the basic inspection and didn't even charge me the full $250 for the full inspection/compression test that I'd already filled out the paper work for and had agreed to pay. WHAT A GUY.... And he told me that Mercedes and BMWs (the cars he services) are high-maintenance and to not get one if I don't want to pay big bucks for maintenance. GOOD TO KNOW.. When a guy denounces the car companies of the cars he works on, you know that's honesty. If I had bought that Merc, or any Merc, he knew he'd probably make a lot of money off me over the years if I take it to him to get it serviced. Here's some useful stuff he told me: Merc S-class brakes are $1200, Mercs electrical systems are crap and usually have to be completely replaced within 5-10 years, costing thousands. Merc's air-suspension often gets a leak, costing thousands to fix. Merc's motor-mounts are crap, costing hundreds to replace. He recommended getting an E320 and I'm like WTF"S THAT THAT SOUNDS OLD AND SLOW.. I'm like I don't NEED a Merc, I just liked the S55 before I knew about the maintenance. So to my girlfriend's relief, I didn't get the car. She didn't want me buying it because she was jealous I'd have a nicer Merc than her (she drives a C-class) and tried to convince me Mercs were for girls and threatened to break up with me if I got the S55. She wasn't too happy about it... Now thinking about it, there are a lot of girls driving Mercs-especially the C, E, G, and M classes. So thanks to Hans I dodged a lemon. Hans saved me a lot of money (much of which would probably be going to him to fix the car had he not warned me). So I looked at some more cars-these are some of the other cars I looked at/test drove and my impressions: Lexus LS430-very comfortable, most comfortable car I drove, none of that air-suspension crap, most reliable, lowest maintenance car of any car according to JD Power. Boring to drive-not enough torque, not aggressive enough handling, frustration ensued. Infinity G35 and G35x-good handling due to front-midship design, fun to drive, too small and cramped, unreliable transmission I learned from research. Supercharged Chrysler 300C-PERFECT-I wasn't cramped by some small bucket seat too skinny for my body, had a lot of arm-room just like the Lexus, and performance was similar to the Merc. Everything's nice and big-you can practically fit a small body in the center-compartment alone. I'm afraid to even put anything in there since it's so deep and big-I'm afraid it'll get lost in that dark abyss. And I saw the 300C in a few mafia movies now thinking about it. And I don't know if the child safety-lock setting's on or what, but you can only open the back doors from the outside-WHICH I LOVE. It's like a cop car-I can detain people, make citizen's arrests, be a vigilante part-time police-officer/bounty hunter if I want to. As you probably guessed, I bought the car, after getting it checked out and compression-tested of course. And it's an American car so I'm supporting America (and their auto-industry, which definitely needs it). Hans himself is pretty German. I felt like I was in Berlin or something when I was at his shop. Everything from his wardrobe to his accent to the props in the building, even the cars were all German brands. So if you're Jewish or Russian, you've been warned. From my experience though, Hans is a pretty honest guy who amazingly seems like he cares more about your wallet than his own. Independent mechanics are rarely trustworthy but Hans is probably the best one I've dealt with. If you live in the Oceanside area and drive a Merc or a bimmer than Hans is your guy. HANS YOU CAN THANK ME LATER FOR THIS FREE PROMOTION... YOU CAN GIVE MY BIMMER A FREE OIL CHANGE OR SOMETHING..... Unfortunately I'm probably selling my bimmer though, due to pressure from my gf and family. When you're a big boy you can only have one toy... But Hans gets 5-stars, easily. read more

Took our Mercedes to a place nearby and ended up pay lots of money for an unsolved problem. Took same car to German Autowerke and diagnosed issue immediately and fixed. Moral of the story, you have to take higher end vehicles to a specialty shop even though you may pay a bit more, you get what you pay for. My wife did the bidding since I was out of town and the techs explained very well and even educated her (and ultimately me) on some finer points of the issue we were experiencing (sensors on the wheels that send data to the onboard computer and transmission). I will continue to do business with German Autowerke. 4 out of 5 due to no weekend work hours - tough to do if you work long hours in your own job. read more

I was having a problem with the front suspension on my 2002 C32; Hans pulled my car into a lift bay and thoroughly inspected the entire suspension, spent a half hour and told me not to worry. I have own Mercedes and Bmw's for over 25 years. I have gone to a number of independent mechanics and shops in San Diego and here in North County. The typical problems seem to happen a lot. More money than initially told because they "found something" when repairing the problem I brought in in for or I didn't get the car back for up to a week after promised. I tried Hans at German Autowerkes in Oceanside and it restored my faith in independent mechanics. Not only is Hans a straight shooter, but the work is top flight and always at the price quoted or less than the quote. I needed my car back for a trip to Orange County and they worked me in extra quickly and got me my car back in time. These guys are what a small business should be!!! Highly recommended. Not really that good...better at protecting his own behind than taking care of mine. Went to Hans for a leaky water pump - I was in the middle of a big job and didn't have time to fix it myself. Ok, a water pump. Not a hugh deal...then he says the radiator is shot and all new hoses, and the special coolant for BMWs. Could he fix the oil leak and re-set the service light? - no problem. No Problem, 'cause it still leaks oil all over the driveway and the "service engine light" came back on in a couple of days....the water pump, yeah, it got fixed for $1000 and the BS about the oil leak..well, it must be coming from somewhere else 'cause what he "fixed" wasn't it. OK. These cars are great and I know how how expensive parts, etc can be, but I don't really need to replace absolutely everything in the cooling system when the pump fails....hiding behind the factory repair manual and shrugging off reasonable responsibility to the customer's budget gets a little old. Not fixing the oil leak and charging me $300 was just plain robbery....I do my own oil and filter changes - does that mean I'm not entitled to the "real" re-set of the "service" light? Must these guys have a strangle-hold on every little portion of auto maintenance? Why do I feel ripped off? This guy is not your friend. read more

We initially called to ask about the cost of replacing the front struts on our Mercedes GLK, thinking this must be the cause of a suspicious noise we have been hearing for a few months. Hans made it clear he did not think it was the struts, but asked us to bring in the car. He kept the car overnight (since we said the noise seemed to be worse when the car was cold). He was able to locate and fix the "noise" that the Mercedes dealership and another local auto repair shop were unable to find. And, he would not charge us. I have been looking for a weekend car, convertible, to enjoy the SoCal weather with my wife of 38 years.. not quite retired we wanted to splurge a bit. I had my eye on several options but always wanted a Mercedes SLK 32 AMG for a long time, but was petrified buy the stories concerning mountians of money for maintenance! So, I decided to just bit the bullet as I found a 02 SLK 32 AMG here locally.. Exactly what I decided I wanted, an,original owner bright Red with chrome five split spoke wheels plus records! So, I called and I kept calling and texting the sellar to let me see it first, you see, I found out I was the fourth in line.. it had only been up for 3 hours on craigs list... I wasnt really that surprised as I had missed out on 3 others over the last year... BUt.. I kept telling him.. I WILL BUY THIS CAR!!!, I told him of my years of searching and begged him to let me see her first! and fortunatly I succeeded and secured a first comer position! I drove like a bat out of hell to take my coveted position. As soon as I saw her I was in love! A real mint 2002 bright RED SLK 32 AMG with shiny chrome wheels was mine! Yeah, couldnt get the money out of my pocket fast enough! thank you Matt! Then it hit me, I needed to find a trust wothy, fair and experienced mechanic to help me care for my new baby! hummm... I discovered that's not as easy as it sounds. After scouring All of San Diego, I Luckly, I stumbled on to Han's, if you are looking for a Mercedes Mechanic the name Han's is a really good start!
