Another visit to our favorite German restaurant! Today, we opted to sit outside as we had our dog, Jack, with us. It was SO cold outside! Our server was very attentive and started the heaters up for us, which made a big difference! We start with the soup special, a delicious mushroom soup. With it, we ordered extra German bread. Yummm! I'm always on the lookout for outstanding German food close to home, so when I saw an ad for German Guys, I had to check it out. I had high hopes and boy did they deliver! I've actually been twice now and both times, the food was amazing! Those potato pancakes? So light and fluffy, I could put down an obscene amount on my own. My other favorite is the bigos--it's a new dish for me and so interesting and flavorful, bright and tomato-y. The fresh taps of frosty beer cut through the fried outside of schnitzel and chicken cordon bleu. (How do they get it so beautifully neat?! Mine never look that good!) The restaurant is always clean and tidy, the staff are friendly, the food fresh and it comes out so quick! I love this place. I love it! One word: ausgezeichnet! I'm so sorry we've driven past this excellent, authentic and tasty german restaurant in Waterloo: we won't make that mistake again. My curry-wurst and my wife's pair of schnitzel's were as good as anything we've had in Bavaria (without passports, a long jet flight and customs). The bier menu has everything you'd expect from a great german beer garden. What a fantastic experience, we went full out with the plate for 4 and got to try a bit of everything and let me tell you, absolutely worth the price. Customer service is amazing and they went above and beyond to make me feel educated about the beer and food selection. I throughly enjoyed each bit and sip and would definitely return. I saw they had a food tent at the Walnut Creek Oktoberfest, and I was super intrigued. I asked an employee what was the difference between the currywurst and bratwurst, and the employee was really nice and patient in explaining that the currywurst was more of a snack dish whereas the bratwurst was a whole meal. I settled on the currywurst since I had a couple of drinks and I wasn't feeling too hungry. The dish came with a spear pickle, which was nice to have. The sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking, but I can't complain. It was a solid pick-me-up after drinking, and other than German potato salad and schnitzel, I can't say I have a lot of experience with German food, so it was a good experience overall. Shout out to the staff for being able to explain and ring me up with all the noise from other attendees, events, and vendors. I'm not sure I'd drive all the way to Stockton for this, so hopefully I'll see them at more Oktoberfest and other German themed events in the future. read more

Such a cute restaurant! Very authentic. Service was great. The German beers were sooo good! I ordered the hunter schnitzel with potato croquettes and cucumber sides. My boyfriend ordered the smoked bratwurst with spatzle and sauerkraut. The hunter schnitzel was okay. I think it could have used more gravy. I did not really like the cucumber salad. It was lunch time so we got the lunch menu. You pick one meat and two sides. I was kinda bummed that the server didn't go over the appatizer options. But what ever. She did mentioned the pretzel. So we got that. We looked over the menu and ordered. We all got the schnitzel with different sides. My daughter got the lemon, that was the better one in my opinion. My son and I ordered the hunter. I am so disappointed . We've been here before and had excellent food and better service. This time, the food was horrible. The schnitzel was so tough, I needed a steak knife to cut it. But they didn't have any steak knives! The potato croquettes were frozen and room temperature. The cordon bleu are also frozen. Come on! Super easy to make. The cucumber salad was swimming in sour cream. Nothing was good. The owner came to apologize and instead of just saying sorry, we'll try to do better, he started defending the food! On a Sunday night for dinner, my husband, dad, and I came to German Guys. We made a reservation and I am glad we did because they were quite busy. Since it was our first time here, we decided to order a little bit of everything to sample as much of the menu as we could. For starters, we split the German bread time appetizer. Very tasty! For our entrées, we each ordered a different version of schnitzel and also split a mustard meatball plate. I ordered the chicken Hunter Schnitzel with a side of bigos and spatzle. My husband ordered the pork hollandaise schnitzel with a side of croquettes and sauerkraut. My dad ordered the chicken gypsy schnitzel with a side of sauerkraut and spatzle. The food was absolutely outstanding - fresh ingredients and absolutely made with thoughtfulness and that home-cooked feeling. Had never been there before, so when our son and daughter in law asked me and a friend to come and have good food on December 30th around 2 pm, as a birthday treat for me, I agreed. This place is BUSY. Am not a meat eater so my choices were limited, but the other three in our party were very, very happy with what they had. Got there at 6:30 on a Wednesday night and they close at 8 pm. I ordered the potato pancakes. They were very thin and very dark brown...seems like they had been cooked a couple of times and warmed up. Not freshly made. Made them more of a thick burned potato chip. Also they were very greasy. I ordered the Hunter Schnitzel (Jager). First bite was gristle. It did get better but smothering the gravy over all the top made it soggy. The sides I ordered were of course Spatzel and red cabbage. If you are a big eater like me make it a XXL Schnitzel. On Thursdays they have a cabbage roll special. It's a cabbage roll stuffed with ground beef and rice. It's covered with an amazing tomato sauce. Highly recommend! The deserts are unreal. Some items seem to rotate but the stand out dessert that is always on the menu is the strudel. So delicious I can't even put into words. Just trust me! The beers here are fantastic. Everything is imported and high quality. All the beers I had were so rich and flavorful. I would come back here just to drink some beers outside. I can't wait for better weather so I can enjoy the nice setting outside. As busy as this place gets the staff is incredibly friendly. Each time I've been there the owner has come by and chatted for a bit. I always have a great time talking to him and you can tell his positive energy runs off on his employees. Driving out into a small town for lunch was a pleasant surprise because the food here was legit delicious. I like German food and German beer but this is by far the best tasting German food I've ver had in this region of Northern California. I'll definitely return to try more of their food. It's high time I re-review this place and bump it up to the 5 stars it deserves! We finally got to "dine in" at their recently renovated Biergarten which is a cute patio with a canopy to provide shade. I'm hoping they'll get some heaters for the colder months so that they can continue to have table service in the event indoor dining rooms stay closed. Now for the good stuff-that would be the food and the service. I have tried several items and can now wholeheartedly say that I love German food, lol. The schnitzel, both chicken and pork are equally delicious. Lightly breaded and fried and served with a few different sauces of your choice (red pepper is my fave), they are cooked to perfection. Juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. My son LOVES the smoked bratwurst served with brown mustard and we both cannot get enough of their potato pancakes. I also really love a dish called Bigos which I can best describe as a stewed cabbage. It's very pungent with bits of bratwurst in a tomato based sauce. Probably an acquired taste but I absolutely love it. Finish your meal off with some delicious apple strudel. And for you beer lovers, they've got a really big selection of German beers. The owners are absolutely the sweetest and friendliest couple. So hospitable and you can tell they really want to make sure you enjoy your experience.
