My wife and I ate dinner at The Commisary in Germantown(Memphis, TN) . We had the rib dinner for two. The meal consists of baked beans, Cole slaw, a deviled egg for each and dinner rolls. We were seated immediately by a very friendly hostess and then greeted by our waitress. She is clearly someone's Grandma! She was extremely cordial and attentive....just like your Grandma would be if you sat down at her dinner table! The food was delicious and maybe the best ribs I've ever had! The meat was perfectly smoked, with a great Smokey flavor and a rich bark on the outside. I'm talking about sucking on the bones to get that last bit of BBQ taste. You MUST try the homemade banana pudding which reminded me of my Southern step-mom's recipe. The BBQ beef brisket salad using BBQ sauce as your dressing is scrumptious. It's big enough to split. I was raised on the Commissary starting in the 80s. I remember this building before they built the dining side on the left. I've had other Memphis BBQ but none of it compares to the commissary. I've brought a lot of out of town friends here declaring it's the best BBQ in Shelby County. Their potato salad is the best potato salad I've ever had and I love potato salad. It's a small location with a small parking lot but I did find parking pretty easily. I ordered the beef brisket dinner, and it came with bread, a deviled egg, baked beans and potato salad. I also ordered an additional egg and a tamale. Everything tasted good but nothing was overly exciting or well seasoned. An easily forgettable meal. The price wasn't bad but I know I won't remember this place in a week. The meat wasn't particularly tender for a smoked brisket, and the sauce tasted store bought. Got the 2 meat meal with brisket and ribs along with sides of bbq beans and Cole slaw which had a deviled egg on top of it. The ribs were dry and somewhat tough which I did not like and had to smother in bbq sauce. The brisket was dry but had a nice smoke ring. BBQ beans were good but only got a small container of them as was the same for the Cole slaw. Came with two small biscuits that were ok as well. Wife got the Lemon Icebox pie that was runny and didn't care for. Maybe was expecting too much from this place with all the hype from others. Got a ton of recommendations to eat here and the food did NOT disappoint! I ordered the brisket plate. My husband got the 2 meats plate (with brisket and ribs), fried okra, and onion rings. I ordered brisket, half slab of ribs, coleslaw, and fried okra. The star of the platter were the ribs, full of smoky flavor and feel right off the bone. Brisket had good flavor, could have been a little bit more tender. Coleslaw was average, bit on the creamy side. Fried okra was average as well, some had a good crisp, some were mushy. The restaurant is small, so there is limited amount of indoor seating. I observed that most people order takeout. Overall would come back just for the ribs! read more

I was only in Memphis for a day and a half but of course I had to have BBQ once. I was staying in Germantown so I decided on Germantown Commissary. I walked in just after 11 when they opened on a weekday. I decided on the BBQ Pork Salad (gotta eat something green) with Honey Mustard and a side order of the Beer Battered Onion Rings. I tried the regular and spicy BBQ sauces. They are both good but I would have liked some more heat in the spicy sauce. Loved the tender pork shoulder but the onion rings were the star of the show. The parking is awful. It took an hour and fifteen minutes to get our food. We ordered ribs and chopped pork. It's not like it was a special order. We asked our server twice about our order and she said it was coming our way both times. Waited...finally came and it was cold. We had to eat as quickly as we could and take most of it with us because we had a show at the Orpheum, across town, and had to leave. This is my third time eating here. The first two times were before the pandemic and times have changed. Inside is still the same rustic building it was years ago. Outside of the fly that was pestering me during my meal, the place is clean. Service was good. There appeared to be only one server for the side of the dinning room I was in but she was moving, and I and the other tables lacked for nothing. I ordered the two meat combo plate. Picked ribs and hot link for the proteins. Ribs were tough and lacked flavor to me. Definitely different than the last time. The hot link was good but you can't really go wrong with sausage. The sauce helped just a tad with the ribs but I ended up only eating half of it. The coleslaw was good. The baked beans had a ketchup taste to them so I didn't care for them too much. I got a piece of chocolate pie to eat later and it was just as good as I remembered from the last time. Randomly found this place while on a business trip in Memphis for a couple days. I knew I was in the right place as soon as I stepped in. They've been making great BBQ 45 years and the warm and quaint atmosphere is just what I needed after a busy day! Red checker claw tables, whimsical arts, and historical photos adorn the wood walls that look like they are from a reclaimed barn. The music they were playing was perfect, I was listening to songs. I haven't heard in years and when I walked in, more than a feeling was playing by Boston on the radio. The menu is expensive, but the portions are healthy. I ordered the Brisket plate with beans and coleslaw. Wow! Really fast service and the flavor and presentation were phenomenal. 10 out of 10! Next time I'm this way, I will stop in. The sides were excellent as were the ribs. Loved the deviled egg that came with the dinner! The brisket was a major let down--just really dry and not what I was expecting. I was somewhat disappointed by this visit to the commissary. The restaurant is a cozy bbq place that's great for families or small groups. The service was top notch with very attentive staff. I got a 2 meat platter. The ribs were very good but were overcooked somewhat. The sliced brisket was strange. It was in a paper boat. The top slice was fresh, tender, and juicy. The brisket, sausage, and turkey were good, Cole slaw was good, beans good, but ribs were meh. The sauce is where it's at though. They have two kinds and both were great. She said the wings were good, but the "hot link" was just hillshire farms-ish smoked sausage. I had the 3 meat plate with ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. The brisket was deceptively dry. I think it was dipped in tallow before service. The pulled pork was also dry. The ribs were ok. Good bite through, but for some reason the sauces did not mess well with the rub. Was better without sauce. The onion rings were almost gummy with batter The Mac and cheese was oddly one of the better Mac and cheeses we'd had in the area. After a sampling of our food, we did ask for boxes to pack up so we weren't there past the updated closing time. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The food was mediocre at best. I had a little bit of everything and I probably liked their sausage best. The chicken was a bit dry, but not terribly so. Their turkey was good and the tamale was pretty good, as well. The pulled pork was good, but the ribs were greasy and not as tender as I would have liked. Hubby is a BBQ guy and indicated that the back membrane of the ribs were not removed, which made it hard to eat. The biscuits were a tad dry but the slaw, beans and deviled egg were tasty, It was a very generous serving of BBQ and the two of us could have easily been satisfied on the three meat combo alone.
