I posted this negative review because when I ask for a coffee warm up I mentioned to the servicer twice then received COLD coffee which is unacceptable .Maybe the restaurant should not put the coffee in a small open glass container since that will not keep the coffee hot . Also asking for HOT coffee the servicer wanted to refill my cup Either bring a fresh hot refill out . I will never go back to Gertrude's nor recommend them ! Gertrudes just hosted a group of 40+ of us who had worked together over the years. It was a great reunion and we dined al fresco in the private pavilion with beautiful views of the Phoenix Botanical Garden. GM Michelle's team provided excellent and warm service, and the food was wonderful from an innovative menu. Everyone raved about the whole memorable experience. My 3rd dining experience and this time with a guest. We really enjoyed our shared appetizer, the Maryland crab dip which was served piping hot; a generous serving with plenty of crisp flatbread and slices of baguette. For entrees my guest chose the risotto which she raved about, and I opted for the house interpretation of jambalaya, which was balanced in seasoning and the portions of seafood. One thing a person dining here needs to keep in mind is that the emphasis at Gertrude's is on freshness and dishes being prepared to order. This is not going to be a jambalaya with a fine mince trinity that was melted into a caramel colored roux hours ago. The flavors and the colors of my jambalaya popped, and the shrimp were appropriately crisp not mushy. Conversely though, my guest's risotto was creamy and tasted doted over. I also appreciated the choice of tableware used to serve our entrees. It facilitated eating rice-based dishes without having to drag the supplied utensils awkwardly across a flat surface with difficulty. Despite being past satiated, I caved in to our server's presentation of the dessert menu and took a portion of the toasted banana goat cheese cake to go. Really I had been wanting to try it ever since first reading about it. It is an intriguing and innovative dessert that was perfectly replicated presentation-wise in the to-go container as it would have been on the plate. That was an absolute first for me, and I have taken desserts to go from internationally-renowned restaurants. We went to Gertrude's last night as part of our annual Luminarias Walk at the garden. Mussels as an appetizer could have been dinner for me-outstanding! My husband had the elk chops and true to the server's words, it was tender, moist and lean. I had the braised boar, tender, succulent and delicious. We had a bottle of Brew Cru Pinot Noir from South Africa. Couldn't have matched it better. Truly a gem of a restaurant. read more

Gertrude's is in such a pretty area, loved the table centerpiece, artwork, and live music. I'm glad we chose Gertrude's for our Christmas Eve brunch. All 7 of us enjoyed our food.. Well presented, as well as delicious. We had the french toast, American breakfast, Eggs Benedict with chorizo, and biscuits and gravy. The prickly pear mimosa was yummy as well as the prickly pear jam. Everything tasted super fresh and the eggs were perfectly done. I can't wait to return one evening for a date night dinner with my husband. I'm a huge fan of botanical gardens, so for me the area is lovely. We have wanted to try this place for quite awhile and we finally had the opportunity today. I have to start off that I was a little surprised by the rock/metal music playing in the kitchen and that it was loud enough to be heard in the dining area. Not the type of music I would expect but ok. We had reservations for 2:30 and they offered us a table next to the patio door and I was afraid of the door opening and closing and it getting too warm so I asked for another table that was a little further away in the corner. Upon being seated we were given the brunch menu and were told that this limited offering menu was the only thing offered on the weekends at this time. Are you kidding me? It is almost 3 o'clock in the afternoon and our only choices were these? Apparently they do not start serving their other menu (of course what we were looking forward to) until 4:00 or so. So we went ahead and made our choices and waited to cool down. We started out with the Carrot Hummus appetizer. It was OK but nothing to write home about. Of course it was still very warm and it seemed as if it was only getting warmer. I asked if the patio doors could be closed and I was told that they needed to remain open for them to carry their platters back and forth and I looked out and no one was even dining outside! Ok fine - whatever! The food arrived and I ordered the Salmon Salad and it was very good although it would have benefitted from having a little crunch in it. We had leftover tortilla chips from the hummus however so I was able to use them to satisfy the crunch factor it needed. Hubby really enjoyed his Huevos Rancheros although his eggs were over cooked and his potatoes were cold. But the flavor was there and he said the salsa was excellent. Our friend ordered the cheeseburger and asked for medium rare but what came out was clearly medium to medium well. But again, the flavor was good so it wasn't too bad. What was bad though is that it didn't even come with French fries! $18 for a burger and it comes with tortilla chips??! Way overpriced. How hard is it to put some French fries on the plate? Then things started to go downhill fast. As soon as they set our food down the flies started. At first it was just one or two but they very quickly multiplied. At one point there were easily 6 or 7 of them and we were all swatting at them and trying to cover our food while trying to eat at the same time. Very unpleasant experience. We called the waiter over and all he could say was that yes they were very sorry and they knew flies were a problem but they were unable to do anything about it because killing them would mess up the ecosystem of the botanical garden. Well here's an idea - keep the frigging door closed!! During our meal a couple walked out to sit out on the patio and after awhile the guy came in to see if someone was going to come out and give them menus. The staff was very rude to him (in my opinion) and told him,"Yes we will now but you had just said you wanted to check it out to see if you wanted to eat out there." I was shocked as I would assume that as a hostess you would have followed them out to see what they decided. By this time we were sweating and our entire meal was just ruined by trying to keep the flies off and it was not what I had envisioned this place to be at all. I was embarrassed as I had talked up this place to hubby and my friend and we were totally let down. The food was good but the atmosphere, coupled with the flies and the unprofessional attitude of the staff really turned me off and I doubt if we will ever return. Very sad. read more

Heard good things about Gertrude's and was excited to try it at the Botanical Garden. Came in and was immediately led to an umbrellaed table on the patio. Quail were walking around nearby, very cute. It was hot but there was a cool breeze. Our waited welcomed us and did water service. He was also training a new waitress. Ordered the cheese board to start. You get a variety of nibbles and smears with small pieces of cheeses. Pickled squash was everywhere. Not really a fan and yet that was the majority on the platter. Tried the prickly pear iced tea. It was ok. Probably won't order again. The drink was mostly ice. Ordered the house salad of mixed greens and salmon. Salad was delicious, so was the tiny 2"x2" piece of $8 salmon. We spent a few hours at the Desert Botanical Garden and around 3:30 we thought we would stop in Gertrudes for a light meal. The host asked if we had reservations, we said no. He said do you want to sit at the bar or I guess you could sit outside. I will add that there were about 10 guests at that time. We decided on the patio, which was empty. It really seemed like he disliked his job and us for bothering him. Zach was our waiter and seemed to truly enjoy his job, he was friendly and attentive. We order the bread service with delicious flavored whip butter and the Baked Brie and Chorizo with Corn & Nopales relish. It was delicious. When we left, the host didn't even acknowledge us, no thank you for coming, how was your meal or even a nod. The table service was wonderful as was the food however the host was not. My wife and I had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch at Gertrude's this afternoon, after visiting the Desert Botanical Garden. The bread was delicious, with vegan 'butter' as an option. Glad we chose it. The arugula salad was also excellent, and more than enough for both of us. The ambiance was very pleasant as well. We have been here twice and the first time I had the Gertie's Benedict which used to be delicious, but they've now replaced the chorizo with pulled pork and they're not as good now. The last visit I had the Huevos Rancheros which was alright. The ambiance is nice here and there was live music the entire time of our second trip that was very enjoyable. I'm rating Gertrude's food a 4, but let me tell you, our service last night was a 10 STAR!!! We were celebrating a special occasion, (our sons proposal.) They went above and beyond to ensure our party was taken care of, spoiled really! They certainly know how to accommodate a big party! Everyone seemed very happy with their dinner choices, I need to give a shout out for a couple menu items, while others struggled. Loved the corn fritters, DELICIOUS. Had dinner at Gertrude's a few years ago and was very impressed. Nice patio with lovely ambiance. Food was enjoyable. Took 2 friends there for lunch last week. What a big disappointment!! The menu consists of foods none of us knew. "Farm to table". I ordered salmon salad. The dressing tasted like pure vinegar, sour, bitter and overpowering. My friends split a hamburger. Neither of them ate more than a couple of bites and rated it unacceptable. As we left we noticed that other guests were not finishing their meals either. Don't go back! read more

Super cute eatery for after your stroll around the gardens! I was a bit worried I wouldn't have any options after looking over the menu (because of my dairy and egg allergies) but the waiter was happy to accommodate--despite them having just changed the menu the night before. I ended up having the smoked salmon salad which was topped with pork rinds! It was super original and tasty. The dressing was great too; they must make it in house. Will definitely be back on my next trip back to the gardens. One suggestion: I would love if they could add a "vegan" distinction to dishes along with the existing "vegetarian" one. Gertrudes is a special bonus to the Desert Botanical gardens. We went to the gardens on a Friday for the chihuly glass exhibit and the concert series. I had made a reservation for 2:45 but got stuck on I-10 because of an accident and was running late. I tried to call and let them know but they don't answer their phone (my only complaint about this restaurant). Instead they have a message from the general manager. Fortunately she gives her cell number so I texted our late arrival. She answered my text and offered to put us at 3:30. The restaurant doesn't seat from 2:45 to 3:30 to switch from lunch to dinner. I think it was Devine intervention because we were really happy with the dinner menu. We ordered the green chili cheeseburger and the tortellini with chicken and mushrooms. Both were excellent. The burger is a knife and fork burger. Impossible to pick up and fit in your mouth with wearing it (that's a positive explanation). They ask how you want it cooked and actually serve it that way. The restaurant is beautiful. We sat outside and I highly recommend it. If you are going to the garden, make plans to visit Gertrudes. read more

We enjoyed an afternoon to sunset walk through the garden & Chihuly art exhibit and it was topped off with a delicious dinner on the patio (with many heaters for cool January eve). Their wine list is extensive, including many local AZ award-winners, and the seasonal farm to table meals are fresh and delicious. We went on a last minute whim with our toddler & had a 7:00pm reservation, we had a great time. The missing star is for the price, our bill came to about $125 not including tip. Since we haven't had a date in probably a year or more, we splurged once we got there. We ordered: the nuts/dried fruit/cheese/mustard/salami appetizer small shaved root salad to split Beauregard Blueberry Sour Ale (can) Historic Brewing "Salt River Lime" Lager (draught) Duck enchiladas Green chili cheeseburger with bacon Nutty Manhattan Bacon Cheeseburger for the baby The kid's cheeseburger came with chips as did the appetizer, kind of an odd pairing but it was ok. The flavors in EVERYTHING we had was absolutely delicious, the only thing that was lacking anything was the cilantro rice -- it needed a touch of salt to really shine but I didn't have any on my table. The beers were super yummy, try them. I don't usually order duck because it's so gamey, but the way it was prepared here was perfect, I would order that again. It definitely tasted like duck but the flavors were all complimentary, delicious. My husband loved the burger and our toddler ate his too. The Nutty Manhattan was outrageously tasty!!! Both of us were wowed by it, had to order it because of the peanut butter whiskey -- that drink did not disappoint in any way. Our server was really nice too and he wasn't bothered by our chattiness about everything we ordered, he let us know that they make their own drinks there, told us about the local breweries that made our beers, and he liked those that we'd ordered too. Next time we'll be back early enough to enjoy the botanical garden, we didn't get to see it at all. We would love to come for a more simple, less splurgey lunch. First time at Gertrude's. We arrived at 11 on a Tuesday morning but it was 'free' day, so it was busy. I ordered ordered the Korean Chicken Thighs. The others ordered the Poke, a scoop of Chicken salad and the Gertie burger. It all came to $70 plus tip. The chicken (mine) came with a zesty, creamy aioli and braised Brussels sprouts. There were three crispy, boneless thighs and about six split sprouts. It was very good, having a higher than average spice level, good char on the sprouts and juicy, crispy, perfectly cooked chicken. The Poke was fresh, with about 10 1" cubes plus aioli. Too expensive for the value tho. The burger was well received, with compliments given to the aioli and the bun. The chicken salad was, well, chicken salad. Not the best value but there were definitely some well done components. read more

Decided to take my parents to Gertrude's for New Year's brunch (we'd had such a good brunch last time we were here). Well when we got seated we found out they were not doing brunch! It's NY's Day...who isn't doing brunch?? Gertrude's is treating NY day like it's a normal Monday...no brunch, no live entertainment, etc. We were totally disappointed but decided to try lunch. I hate to say this but it was a total bust. Duck enchiladas were flavorless, hamburger was cold, drinks were too sweet... Our waiter acted like he was so busy that we were kind of a pain. The last 2 times we were here on a weekend. Gertrude's was packed tonight! I am glad I had a reservation because I doubt we would have been able to be seated as a walk-in since so many people had attended the luminaria event this evening. We were seated promptly. The menu had all sorts of appetizing items with a wide range of proteins and a few vegetarian options. I had the venison and tried some of the Korean fried chicken. The venison was superb, full of flavor and I loved the slight kick of spiciness from the ancho chile rub. It was cooked perfectly at medium rare, and very tender. It was served with roasted potatoes, creamed greens, and a date puree. The roasted potatoes were perfect, and while I enjoyed the taste of the creamed greens they were served in a rectangular brick form so it made me think they had served me a frozen box of spinach on a plate. The date puree had good flavor but I didn't like the grainy texture of it. The presentation was unique. It reminded me a little of the mountains along Papago Peak. I also tried some of the Korean fried chicken which had a wonderfully crispy skin and tender meat. There were some pieces that were slightly over seasoned though and a bit too salty for my tastes though. Service was good and we were checked up on as needed. We finished our meal with a lovely panna cotta with berry sauce and diced dragonfruit. I loved the creamy panna cotta with the texture of the dragon fruit and tangy addition of berry sauce. The orange peel on top was a good way to make the presentation look better, but the actual taste of it was tough and leathery. If it had more of a candied flavor it would have perfected the dessert. Kimchi & Dairy. Hmmmm, Ok I rate this place for atmosphere, set-up, loudness, ambience, location at Botanical Gardens, the gift shop a 4 to 5 stars. The wait staff was excellent, polite and accommodating. However, my ratings are focused on food taste, quality, presentation, creativity, the standard fare. Lets start with cocktails, Figgy Manhattan a great tasting innovative and definitely different. The garden 'Rita was very good as well tasty and refreshing, Agave 75 another excellent cocktail - for the granddaughter she had the lemon basil lemonade, an innovative and great mixologist - I don't think you can go wrong here. Appetizers; we shared the Elote Fritters and Green Chile Hummus - both looked great and tasted excellent - we truly appreciated both the corn meal with a few whole corn kernels in the fritters were naturally sweet and delightful bites. The hummus was good - a little runny due to the roasted infused herbs veggies inside. But great flavor and innovative. Ok we should have stopped ordering food here and this would have been a four star review. But we wanted some entrees.... We ordered the Korean Fried Chicken Thighs, Shrimp Risotto, Seared Scallops, Wild Boar in Green Chile and Macaroni and Cheese for children dish. The Wild Boar was a very good meal, good value for quality and great taste. Would recommend again. The Mac and Cheese meal was great as well. The rest is why this is only getting the few stars - the Risotto had no taste - other than the color being a nice orange from something but no bite or flavor from the red chile, a basic Milanese saffron risotto has four times the flavor of this baby food. Maybe they toned it down to try and bring out the Huitlacoche which wasn't tasted at all. The rice was undercooked not just el dente, edible but not the creamy texture one would expect. The prawns were bland tasteless standard cheap farmed raised with no flavor, they were slightly overcooked but not enough to destroy the flavor. I usually toss prawns like this because it makes me think of eating a non food item. The pecorino cracker and the green beans, haricot verts were the best part of this dish. The scallops - a whopping $36 for three scallops, cooked fine, but the red beet mole and forbidden rice made this dish another near tasteless plate and at $12 per scallop or $6 per bite! Arghhh ok we are picky because we love good seafood. These were obviously frozen too long or soaked in fresh water for several days to ensure no sand or flavor was left in them. The "Korean Fried Chicken Thighs with Brussels Sprouts, Kimchi Vinaigrette, Yogurt, Sesame Seeds and Korean BBQ" (their description). My wife (Korean raised in Korea) ordered this. We all tasted. A complete and total failure of a dish that sounds great but gone way bad. First of all nothing is BBQ that was tasted or visible never the less Korean BBQ. The word Korean BBQ needs to be used with respect, kind of like calling a slow roasted chuck roast a Chateaubriand. The chicken we were told was twice fried, deep fried that is, with a breading - kind of like KFC fried chicken with this regurgitated (I'm being nice) kimchi, yogurt and maybe some gochujang in it sprinkled with sesame. The chef should be fired for this one. What a disgusting dish. Fermented Spicy cabbage aka kimchi does not easily mix with dairy. And the Brussel Sprouts were way underdone - frankly nearly raw! A total waste -- My wife and I have been developing and making Korean (and other Asian) and Western fusion cuisine for nearly 40 years and even some of our way out experiments never were this bad. It was disgusting. We see some chefs trying to add Korean flavors into their menus but this is NOT THE WAY TO DO IT and will turn anyone that understands true Korean flavors and cusine off.... Like I said analogous too ordering a Chateaubriand with the proper sauce in a French restaurant and then served a poorly done chuck roast or lesser quality diner meatloaf. I would never order an entrée at this place. read more

I ordered Jambalaya! It was good, as was my side salad. I must say however I felt mislead by the Jambalaya description of the menu item..... the word LOBSTER jumped out at me, and I was expecting nicely sliced medallions of lobster within the other seafood and sausage...... and it turned out to be itty bitty langoustine lobster tails (why bother!). When I brought it to the attention of the staff that I didn't see the "lobster", A young man with a scruffy unshaven face and greasy hair, gave me attitude and didn't handle my inquiry properly..... and as two other young waiters bumped into my chair neither one apologized, yet anybody who bumps into a chair knows (!) they've bumped into a chair, and they should apologize to the guest. Nope not at this restaurant. I also don't like restaurant staff member that donned a long hairy un-groomed beard. I don't want that anywhere near my food. Management should really address this. The bar-tender that waited on me was great. She was a professional. Gertrudes is a fine place and I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Our experience at Gertrude's exceeded our expectations. First, thank you to Michelle, the wait staff, and the kitchen for providing us with an exceptional experience. I reserved a table on the patio for a graduation celebration for a party of 10. They set up a nice table where we enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and the surrounding scenery. The botanical gardens were a beautiful environment for our family celebration. The menu had something for everyone, and the food was fresh, delicious, and uniquely prepared; a foodie's delight! The highlight of the luncheon was the hand-crafted cake made by the chef and decorated with love by Michelle. She also gave our two graduates handwritten cards that they really appreciated and was an unexpected gesture that made the kids feel so loved. Gertrude's Overall a "so-so" experience but right off the bat the prices are on the higher side and quality is mediocre. Of the 7 dishes we ordered 1 was flat out insipid (crab dip) had to return it. The other - vegan bowl had no particular flavor - just a hodgepodge. The dressing for the salad was very salty. The Three Sister soup was a bland soup and the portion was quite little while the bowl it was served in was huge. I think this restaurant needs a new menu and a chef who at least tastes his own food. The unusual food offerings include the seafood enchiladas which, though pricey, are generous and delicious. I'm a big fan of their Garden Rita but don't order that if you can't take the heat because it's definitely not for those who want a sweet, not spicy margarita. Others had the pulled pork sandwich and salads; berry/lemonade and beer ; which my friends said were good also. The outside garden setting is beautiful and unlike many eateries today it's NOT loud!!
