Note: This review is based on my experience of trying to get a reservation here. I left voice mails, emails, and absolutely no response. We visited there in person, hoping there would be any last minute cancellations. The 2nd time we visited there was an open table but she refused to seat us saying the last time they seat people was at 930pm. I told her we just wanted to try a few things out. She still refused to seat us. The place was a very small enclosed area, hot and wet like a steam room. Looking back now, I am glad we did not go there. We probably would have been super miserable in that environment and possibly even would have left as hosts of unexpected contingents due to the warm temperature, high moisture in an enclosed small area*. So I guess everything happens (or doesn't happen) for a reason! *For the Business Customer Service comments noted below: Not meant to be inflammatory at all. Be prepared to reserve your dinner months in advance. I'd say it's worth the wait. - we got both the Sashimi and nigiri plates which were both amazing. The fish is fresh and just melts in your mouth. I ordered a bowl of rice to go with my sashimi plate, which I actually preferred so that I could really just taste the flavor of the fish. - the Crab dip was a pleasant surprise, fresh, bright and served with crispy rice chips. - the mushroom and shrimp tempura Hand rolls were just as delicious - if you can, save room for dessert! We got a little order happy so we will full by dessert time but they were able to pack them for us to go. We got the raspberry opera cake and chocolate cake. Both were super flavorful and decadent. Have been at this spot last night. Food was amazing and it worth every penny! our server Regan is really the best! That's how it supposed to be! Honestly I don't remember last time I've been treated like that. Will got back first cos of her hospitality! I wish the hostess lady would be at least somewhow nice as she. OUTSTANDING I had one of the best sushi dinners here that I've had in a while. For cocktail I ordered the Gi-Jin blossom: gin, dry vermouth, apricot, coriander. I really liked this. I ordered wine the rest of the evening. To start, we split the onigiri and the dynamite crab: sushi rice, Marine crab, spicy mayo, masago, lemon, crispy tempura. The onigiri was the least memorable dish of the night. The dynamite crab was delicious - there was plenty of crab. For nigiri I started with aburi salmon belly, madai, toro, hamachi, and hotate. Everything was fantastic. The toro, hamachi, and hotate were my favorites, and the hamachi was my top pick. The toro was super buttery smooth. The hotate had a luxurious texture. The hamachi was some of, if not the, best I've had. It was melt-in-your-mouth with an amazing flavor. I ordered some more hamachi and toro nigiri to finish off my meal. I have been looking for a great sushi place in Pittsburgh. Sure I've tried Umami and the other recommendations, but nothing comes close to some of the really great sushi restaurants. When I first heard about Gi-Jin, I was really skeptical because of the name of the restaurant was incorrectly spelled. After being burned at Soba, I was very worried about trying another Japanese place with good reviews but was completely inauthentic (how can you nothave soba noodles at a restaurant called soba?). Fortunately, Gi-Jin was great! The entrance is a little hidden. I had to wait outside for another member of my party because she had walked by multiple times and couldn't see the entrance. Part of it is that the outdoor tents of the restaurant next door block the main entrance. Once you enter though, the ambience is amazing! There's a beautifully painted dragon on the chalkboard next to the tables, and there's all kinds of decorations from Japan that were a nice touch. There was a even a kakigori ice shaver, but unfortunately it was just for decoration! We got the sashimi plate with a couple of hand rolls to complete. Everything tasted great and was super fresh! When I looked at the menu and saw limited vegetarian options, I was sure that I would give this place nothing more than a 4 star. They had 2 appetisers and one hand roll (small plate) on the menu that was vegetarian. The server said she could ask the chef to create another veg option. None of the entrees were vegetarian. I was 90% sure that I would be returning home hungry. This place turned out to be one of my favorite spots in Pittsburgh for Sushi! I ordered salad and edamame for starters. Mushroom hand roll and Cucumber Avocado hand-roll for mains. I tried all the desserts in the menu! I ordered Cat's Pyjamas (their fall special cocktail) It was yumm! I enjoyed the presentation. What a cute spot with unique and fresh menu items! Gi-jin is the type of place you'll certainly want a reservation to visit. It's a pretty small place with some limited outdoor seating. We made a reservation on OpenTable and went with another couple for my husbands birthday. The decor is on theme with the sushi and gin themes of the restaurant. I had a delicious and unique gin cocktail followed by a handful of different menu items. I am gluten free and I was very impressed with how knowledgeable the staff was to accommodate certain dishes so I could still mainly share with friends. There were a few dishes that couldn't be adapted, and we all finished up with a few hand rolls. Everything was delicious and in small portions! Certainly left feeling a bit hungry for the amount of money that we paid for the food, but everything was absolutely delicious with meticulous attention to detail in food, service and décor. I had no idea that Gi-Jin gets booked well in advance, but lucky for me, 3 days prior to my arrival date, I was able to score a reservation for 1 at the counter. Although it was on a Tuesday at 5:00 and Gi-Jin had a lively crowd, there were a couple of seats left at the counter through 7:00. I suggest if you are unable to locate a reservation online, don't bother calling because they do not answer and the same goes for sending an email, because they do not reply, just go up there and talk to the hostess right when they open. It was great chatting with Ciana and I appreciated her helping me make the following choices: Hamachi crudo, toro, mushroom and shrimp tempura hand rolls followed by the silk chocolate torte. A must-visit Japanese and sushi restaurant! We had a delightful experience and the food was delicious. The interior décor is classy and beautiful, with little trinkets such as the adorable chopstick holders. The table gets served with a small bowl of white kimchi, picked ginger, and freshly grated wasabi. The wasabi was so sublime that we were even snacking tiny dips of it. ----- Blistered Shishito Peppers: soubise, xo sauce, crispy fried onion, lemon zest, nori powder ($10). The peppers were unexpectedly soft and not that spicy, only a subtle kick of heat. The sauce and toppings had a nice flavor that complimented the sweetness of the peppers. ----- Dynamite Crab: sushi rice, Marine crab, spicy mayo, masago, lemon, crispy tempura ($24). The warm plate was a rather minute portion, but had an adequate amount of fresh crab. Seasoning was on point and everything mixed well together. A good choice for those that do not eat raw food. ----- Tonkatsu Hand Roll: Berkshire pork belly, tonkatsu sauce, karashi cabbage slaw ($11). I was surprised that the pork belly was crusted and by the tenderness of the meat. The slaw on top was light with a slight crunch. ----- Matcha Misu: tiramisu cream, matcha-honey tea, ladyfinger cookies ($9). A tasty cold dessert that had fluffy sponge biscuits layered between matcha cream. I liked the contrast in texture introduced by the crunchy toppings. ----- Nigiri Plate: bluefin tuna, salmon, hamachi (yellowtail), shima aji (striped jack), hirame (fluke) ($29). My brother thought the nigiri was not amazing but was of good quality. He added the toro (fatty tuna) for $11 and complimented how delectable it was. ----- The server was friendly and timely, regularly returning to take any new orders. My tablemates loved the hand rolls and were sampling through all of them. Food is served as soon as they are ready, so sometimes the chefs will personally deliver. Be sure to reserve a table early in advance via OpenTable. Only times past 9 PM were available for a Friday a month prior to our visit. Prices are on the higher end but are worth the splurge. Today is the first time I'm trying this restaurant, I was initially quoted a non-reservation time of 40 minutes, but was seated in 20. Normally went trying a new sushi restaurant, I try my favorites first: Unagi and yellow tail. They char roasted the unagi slightly which tasted different and a very good different! The yellow tail came out a little spicy for me but was also very good! Next I tried their Habiscus hot tea and their dynamite crab dish! It was a little spicy for me but superbly delicious! I definitely have to make this for my friends at home! A great use of crab meat! It was kinda small and unfilling so ordered their bara chirashi next, a recommendation from my server. The assorted fish was amazing! I'm definitely ordering this again! I had cubed salmon, yellow tail, and tuna in it on rice. For dessert I tried their black sesame creme brulee. At that point, the service was very strong. We tried several dishes, including the salad, miso soup, sashimi plate, nigiri plate, and some hand rolls (mushroom, eel, scallop). Finally had the pleasure of dining here with a friend. We had 9:30 Thursday night reservations that we had to make quite a while in advance. The overall experience was a 5/5. The space is very small, which is part of why it's so hard to get a reservation, but is beautifully & thoughtfully designed to create a unique, warm ambiance. We enjoyed the Bara Chirashi bowl and Beef Tataki plate to start, followed by various hand rolls (structured like little tacos in a seaweed wrap), all of which were incredible. I made a reservation for Gi Jin back in May, and the first available date for 2 people was in August. I anxiously waited for our dinner! My cousin and I were greeted at the hostess stand after walking through a curtain into the restaurant. We were seated side by side at the bar which was really cool. I loved being able to watch them prepare the dishes and send them out to the tables. It was very hard to hear inside and with the waitress wearing a mask, we literally couldn't hear anything she said. We just smiled and nodded because it was so loud inside. I loved that we could order as we were eating so we didn't order too much or too little. We started with the hamachi crudo, which was one of my favorite parts of the meal. It melted in your mouth and was so fresh. My cousin ordered hot sake and I got the yuzu 75, we both enjoyed our drinks. On to the sashimi course! We got two orders of scallop sashimi and an order of fatty tuna. The scallops were huge! When I have ordered scallop sashimi at other restaurants, it is very expensive and usually is 1 scallop sliced into 3 bites. These bites were huge! I think it was three whole scallops. They are buttery and melted in your mouth. The fatty tuna....oh my gosh! This was my first time trying it. It literally fell apart when trying to pick it up. This was like no other sashimi I've ever had. I wish I could afford to have several orders of it next time! Lol We got 1 order of salmon sashimi and it was probably my least favorite. It was a little tough and not super flavorful. The waitress explained that the hand rolls were served open and were the size of the cigar. Instead of splitting one, we each ordered our own. It was awkward to eat it like a taco, because the seaweed doesn't really break off when you bite into it. However, it was so delicious I will definitely order it again. We both got a torched miso salmon roll. We watched the chef torch it right in front of us. It really had that delicious umami flavor that we were hoping for. After we finished eating, I ordered a glass of Barbera to go with our dessert. We shared the silk chocolate tart. This dessert was crunchy on the top and silky smooth in the middle. It tasted like salty, buttery toffee on top. The menu says it has almond cookie crunch on top. Whatever it was - it was incredible! I hope they keep it on the menu. It was a super memorable experience and I would love to go back for a special occasion. I also see that they now have a sashimi plate, and I'd love to try that next time! The restaurant is beautifully decorated with a earthy and bright wood energy feel from first entering the restaurant. You have all of the good including a beautiful view of the sushi masters wrapping your unique sushi roles with none of bad of not dealing with loud obnoxious kitchen noises in the background. Phenomenal dining experience at Gi-Jin. The beautiful interior featuring a drop down wooden ceiling feels like you're in a totally different location and not the bottom of a parking garage. The sushi bar and dining tables are spread out and private for a night of romance or time with friends. The menu is large with small plates (both hot and cold) and just about any kind of roll you can imagine. I started with the tuna pizza and dynamite crab and was immediately blown away. The pizza is great for sharing with six little slices, generous amounts of tuna over a pesto type sauce and the black truffles are a must. The crab is plentiful and served over a bed of rice with tasty little crispies. As a main course I tried both the Salmon Belly and Miso Torched Salmon open rolls. I've never tried an open roll before and it was a great experience. You ate it like a taco. There was plenty of salmon on each roll and the Salmon Belly was one of the best rolls I've had. Flavors were all noticeable and there was a perfect balance of the goat cheese, Smokey salmon, pickled cucumber and fried onion. I could eat a whole serving of that roll every day. Hot tip: get a reservation, since the place is small and people often come in trying to get a real time table Gi-Jin is different from most restaurants you would expect in Pittsburgh - modern, sleek, and fusion gone good. The staff was so nice and our waitress gave us mocktail recommendations. We had a party of 4 and ordered basically everything on the menu. Here are what I would order again: onigiri (we ordered 4 in total), nigiri tokubetsu, toro handroll, and silk chocolate torte. Came in for a 5pm reservation on a Saturday. Gi-Jin had just opened and so it was nice to be in there as the staff finished their last minute preparations and in the quietness of opening. Everyone was very professional and everything about the restaurant was orderly and clean. We were seated at the bar in an area where it was relatively easy to slot my young child's car seat so that we didn't disturb the flow of the staff. We were right in front of the hand roll counter and so that was fun to be close to and see how those are made. We purposefully came tonight without huge appetites as Gi-Jin is a bit of a treat for us. We started with the Bara Chirashi which I thought had excellent cuts of nagiri, perfectly cooked sushi rice, and nice umami flavor from the furikake. This was probably one of my favorite things we ate in fact! Next we moved on to the hand rolls and samples toro (fatty tuna), Spicy Scallop, Shrimp Tempura, Uni (Sea Urchin), and Unagi (eel). I liked the Tempura as I thought the flavor from the Chinese 5 Spice was nice, and I also liked the nicely marinated eel. To close out the evening, we ordered the chocolate torte which was creamy and had a firm yet soft custardy texture. That was a really nice way to close out the meal! Imo, the best sushi in Pittsburgh in order of price point is Whole Foods (made fresh), Sushi Kim 2 downtown, Penn Ave Fish Co. in the Strip, and then Gi-Jin. Top of the food chain sushi in Pittsburgh for sure, and you will pay for the privilege, but it's highly worth it! I'd consider the feel semi-casual, but you'll definitely want to dress smart-casual or better here. It's a beautiful date night spot because ambiance and small amount of covers. My wife and I got a last second reservation here at 5pm the other day. To start, getting seated, presumably if you're reservation is at 5pm, is very strange. We showed up at around 4:55 for our reservation and were told our table wasn't ready yet, and asked to sit outside (the restaurant was empty and opens at 5). For a high end restaurant, you'd think they'd just seat you. Not sure what happens when it rains or is freezing out? Anyways, at 5 we were told we could take out seats. However, we went in and we're again told it was now 4:59 and kid you not, were made to step outside again. Once seated, we started with some cocktails. The negroni was great but the Japanese old fashioned just doesn't work with Japanese whiskey. Tasted watered down. We got the tuna pizza (very good), hamachi crudo (excellent but very small portion), beef tartare open hand roll (okay, almost no beef on it), salmon open hand roll (good) and warm crab plate (tasted good in some spots but other spots tasted like lighter fluid due to the hand torching it gets). We were still quite hungry after the meal and having spent $160 after gratuity. The handrolls are not friendly for splitting and there's little guidance from the server. Wowwww I've waited so long for this day and it's finally here. I've been passing this restaurant front for years impatiently awaiting the opening. That day finally arrived and I was lucky enough to get a reservation on day 2. I cannot rave enough about my experience. The aesthetic of the restaurant is phenomenal, the staff phenomenal, and the food PHENOMENAL. I was nervous all the hype would leave me a little disappointed but it did not. My friends and I shared a handful of apps. The spicy tuna rice cake was the crowd favorite of the 3. We all questioned Parmesan on the tuna pizza but it surprisingly paired so well together. Lastly, the miso salmon which I absolutely loved. I thought the miso flavor was so good paired with the salmon. I personally also tried some nigiri and hand rolls. The nigiri was probably my favorite item of the night. The two stand outs of my 4 pieces of nigiri were the toro and sake. I'm typically prefer tuna over salmon but I was surprised by how much I loved the salmon over the bluefin tuna in this case. For the hand rolls I chose one open and 1 rolled. I don't think any of us were blown away by our rolled hand rolls. Nothing out of this world compared to other items and it was a little hard to eat. I was however surprised by how much I liked the open tempura shrimp roll. I didn't think I wanted a open roll but it was amazing. Both of my friends said the same for their mushroom open roll and they ordered a second. All in all everything was AMAZING! Well worth the wait!! Thrilled to get a last minute seat at the counter to try out what was one of our most anticipated new openings in years we had a truly great experience and memorable meal. The aesthetic of the restaurant is beautiful and full of energy. Thematically this restaurant is about Gin and Sushi and we were ready for both. We started with two fantastic cocktails - the yuzu and Gamera. We then handed the controls over to our waitress and said bring us your favorites. Every dish was fantastic. Highlights included the spicy tuna rice cake, all of the hand rolls open and traditional were exceptional and the nigiri was simply bomb. We ended with the chocolate tort and matcha tirimasu. Came here for my birthday dinner after wanting to try this place for so long! We started out with cocktails, there were plenty to choose from. The bartender made our drinks in front of us which is always fun. Our waitress helped us out a lot in pacing our food and ordering the right amount. We started out with the sashimi plate which was wonderful. The fish was so fresh, and there were some unique fish! We enjoyed trying each type of fish together and picking our favorite at the end. We then ordered hand rolls. We went with the California and the shrimp tempura. Both were really good but I think I liked the California a bit more, because the crab on it was so good. We also got the dynamite crab, and it definitely lives up to the hype. It's soft and crunchy and buttery and salty! We ended with the matcha tiramisu. We has such a great night out here last night. I made the reservation on a whim a couple months ago and we have been looking forward to it since then. We were in the bar seating and it was amazing to watch the chefs prepare for the evening. I loved trying the sake and my husband tried a couple gin drinks and really enjoyed them. Each bite was better than the one before. Everything was super fresh and beautifully presented. I don't think I could pick a favorite dish and we honestly considered making another reservation while we were driving home. The space was beautiful too, which is a bonus. The chocolate torte was an incredible end to the evening. Also, our server suggested using the shiso leaved from the sashimi plate to make little mini rolls with the fist and some of the pickled veg and that was A+.
