Their products are good, but beware: there's a guy (he looks like he might be the owner) who does not follow COVID guidelines. He wears his mask under his nose, he even folded it down which was hard to ignore. It's messed up. PRECAUTIONS IN PLACE BUT ARE NOT BEING ENFORCED/FOLLOWED. I'm a very frequent customer of this place as they have great breads and coffee. However, this review is for the LACK of enforcement of the amount of people entering at one given time, allowing at times people to enter without a mask and not making sure everyone is keeping apart from each other. After witnessing two men on two separate occasions inside without a mask I was livid. Especially since one was a chief of law enforcement. Like how ignorant and oblivious can you be. Given that Covid cases continue to rise..I don't understand how people can be so reckless and irresponsible. OWNER please ensure to *not allow anyone to enter without a mask and also address the other problems I mentioned. We are in a pandemic and this is unacceptable. read more

One of the best bakeries in Astoria. I like that it's a mom and pop bakery. They've been around for a while. Everything is fresh and tastes delish. The iced coffee is also my go to whenever I come here. The staff is friendly for the most part and they all work well in the fast paced environment they have. The wait is never really long. According to research it takes between 7 and 17 seconds for people to form an initial opinion.... and likely years for them to change it! I first came to Gian Piero in 2009, when it was ranked #1 on yelp. I tried a bunch of stuff then including the Napoleon, Cassata cake, rainbow cookies, Sfogliatelle, cheesecakes, and the cannoli. I did think then that there wasn't much to write about: the taste was somewhat muted, the sugar level tilting the scale a tad more than what I would prefer, and the texture softened beyond acceptable as a result of the refrigeration. In particular, the cannolo's proud personality had been bent out of shape, the external manifestations of which were apparent from the soggy shell... Fast forward a few years, and I happened to be in the neighborhood trying out Bosnian restaurants. Stopping by for dessert I was blown away by the cannoli: the citrusy, ricotta filling was one of the best I'd had in the city and the shell was crisp. I even liked the cannoli cream and marzipan dominated cassata, though I thought that the rainbow cookies were still overhyped in the reviews (nearby La Guli has perhaps the best version I've tried lately), and there was no point in even trying out a cupcake. The visit gave me food for thought: had I been too much of a contrarian the first time around? Had the intervening years restored the necessary balance in judgment? Could it be the result of Saturn traveling through Libra? But, the balance of guilt and justice was restored by a subsequent visit that found the cannolo shell much too pliable, and the rainbow cookie still mute... and the same was true on my fourth visit confirming that the one superlative experience remained the outlier. Still, Gian Piero remains a neighborhood institution. Plenty of people loaf outside the bakery on the benches and tables. The sweet old ladies that manage the shop still live up to their descriptor. And, I would agree that it towers above the likes of Martha's, Omonia, and Terrizi in the neighborhood. But, the scales of comparative experience can only find equilibrium at A-Ok. read more

One of the last of authentic Italian bakeries here in Astoria. Everything and I mean everything from here is delicious. Their rainbow cookies and napoleons are what I will be asking for on my deathbed. It's a no frills bakery so don't be coming in here asking for a fondant cake, it ain't happening! Proceeded to enter and was mesmerized by all the baked goods. Only went for the biscotti and it was amaaaazing. None of that prepackaged, hard stuff from Starbucks. I walk past this bakery every morning when dropping my daughter to school but never went in. There are people always sitting outside enjoying their goodies and coffee. Finally, my daughter and I decided to go there to pick up a treat for a dinner party we needed to attend in the evening. As soon as we walked in we were helped right away. Really nice staff. I ended up getting a custard pastry, a blue flowered cream puff, and pumpkin pie. We had the first two once we got home and the pumpkin pie at dinner. Everything was great. Everyone enjoyed the pie. Not my fav...things were good, but not great. All the pastries were a bit cold. When you bit into them the chocolate on the eclairs was super hard and the shell was too dense. The cannoli pastry was cold and soggy instead of having that crunch factor with creamy inside. Everything needed to be much more at room temp to truly enjoy. When in Italy you get really fresh pastries. These felt old and lackluster. Thankfully they had a bathroom for customers but honestly it's not worth your dessert calories. This was the first time, I was ordering cake that too for my baby shower where there would be 15-20 guests. We asked the generous lady if we can modify the cake a bit and she gave us many options. We changed the style of strawberries decorated and opted out banana from regular flavour. So it was chocolate sponge cake with whip cream and strawberry jelly in it. OMG.. every guest just loved it. By far the best Italian bakery/bakery in Astoria! Mike is one of the best business owners I have ever met. Consistency is key and they never let me down. My favorite thing here are the rainbow cookies. Perfectly made with care they are not to moist and not to dry, just enough sweetness and the chocolate top layer always has a nice cold semi crunch to it! 20 year's I have been going to Gian Pieros without a complaint once. This place is typically packed, but suspect that is purely out of convenience to locals as there are no other coffee shops close by. This place is packed on a Sunday morning and I'm convinced it's due to its location in a residential area and people are going out of convenience more than anything else. It is definitely why I go. It's just OK. Nothing special. Not extraordinary. Not even worth the calories. I go out of convenience. If I have a party to go to, or visiting my in laws for the day and want to bring a cake or some Italian cookies, I'll stop here. And I can see why people are enticed. It smells delicious outside. I love Gian Piero. I work from home so some days I'll drop by around 2pm for an espresso and a baked good of some sort and the ladies tease me for ordering one small sfogliatelle or a single biscotti. One of my favorite things about my neighborhood! Even though my end of 30th Avenue is far quieter than "West of Steinway", it is full of charm, and Gian Piero's is definitely a big part of that. From the fresh ciabatta and Italian loaves to the delicious cookies, there is no way to go wrong here. They have my favorite pignoli cookies (have a maximum of two at one sitting), delectable cream puffs and pastries I don't even know the name of (I just point to them) but love and their cakes are divine. If you need a dessert to take to a dinner party, this is your place. If you have a moody stepfather visiting and you know he is soothed by taking a walk to the bakery to get fresh bread, this is the spot to send him. I'm just saying. Coffee here is also great. Everybody in that place spoke italian (even the kids!). There were pastries and cookies in all colors of the rainbow as far as the eye could see. When most of New York was closed for Hurricane Irene, Gian Piero was open and served as a community hub for the neighborhood. It was the morning after the hurricane, and some people, including me, needed to walk around, survey the damage and see if there are neighbors who needed help. As we walked around the neighborhood, it was heartening to see that a lot of people were already at Gian Piero. The coffee chain and fast food stores were closed but our dependable neighborhood stores knew that it is precisely the moment that the neighborhood needs them. Sipping one's morning cappucino, while the nearby church bells were pealing was comforting. Although I'd drop by Gian Piero at least once a week, I never thought of writing a review but seeing how reliable they were made me realize it was almost unjust not to do so. The chocolate croissants are delightful, comes in the right size and are as crisp as lechon skin. :) The sugar free pignolis are golden and are in fact are priced like gold. I love the ciabattinas here as well as our household can never finish the regular sized ciabattas. Looking around at Gian Piero the day after the hurricane and knowing that it is the small neighborhood stores that we can rely on once again reminded me to always look out for the small guys. :) read more

I could tell you that I visit this place twice a day, every day, since I've been living in Astoria. This is true. But it doesn't paint the whole picture, no what I am saying? Espresso-based drinks are legit. (Ask for Maria or Michelle to make you a cappuccino. You can thank me in advance.) If I said you should get one thing from this bakery, I urge, no, I IMPLORE YOU, to get the prosciutto bread. Jesus Mary and Joseph is it good. You know what I love most about this bakery. The community. Everyone goes here. It's like the United Nations. It's a microcosm of the greatest borough in the city. What unites the people is their love of all things tasty and good conversation. Today I came here for the first time and my taste-buds thanked me at the end. Two small spongy cakes and one tart and one coffee = $6.50. Everything tasted home made- freshly made, tasty ( and I'm the type that doesn't eat cream or whip cream or anything that tends to be artificial and cheaply made) , and the service had a genuine sincerity welcoming feel. I'm getting my birthday cake from this place. No doubts about it. :) ~ The only reason I decided not to give 5 stars is because I want to experience the service a minimum of 5 times before giving a phenomenal rating of 5 stars.
